A question about tracking and marriage: I am getting married this summer. My plan was to lump my fiance's NW into my own, as we will be sharing finances. That will cause a noticeable spike in 'my' NW, as reported on this thread.

Do those of you that are married report your NW as a couple or as individuals?

I guess it really doesn't matter one way or the other...and may just boil down to whether or not you and your SO have separate or combined accounts -- still wanted to ask!

NW as a couple.

NW as a couple.  When we got married, both of us had debt and just a handful of cash so no real NW bump.

You should track your progress however it makes the most sense for your situation. If you are married with combined finances it probably makes the most sense to track together.

Personally, I'm tracking individually. We track finances separately and are working towards different goals. I'm working towards FIRE and he's working towards a career change doing what he loves instead of what pays well. I invest in the stock market, he invests in his business.

Recently married and recently combined accounts to one bank account so there is no way for me to separate a part of it now. I just put a little comment in my spreadsheet to explain the $50k or so jump.

Married 31 years.  It's all combined, probably much to my wife's chagrin.

May 2016: $117,000
May 2017: $152,000

Had some oil stocks that brought me down a bit and cancelled out some other gains, but I'm keeping them around for fun.  Savings now is around $3k a month, trying to push it up this year after a raise and once our 401k match comes back.  Also taking advantage of discounted shares through our employee stock plan, cash out is every 6 months.

Mar 2016     $28,361
Apr 2016     $31,751
May 2016     $38,742
Jun 2016     $40,970
Jul 2016     $61,657 (added my HSA of about 9k into Mint)
Aug 2016     $64,120
Sep 2016     $66,961
Oct 2016     $70,179
Nov 2016     $73,125
Dec 2016     $80,499
Jan 2017     $87,257
Feb 2017     $93,080
Mar 2017     $99,766
Apr 2017     $97,334
May 2017    $100,755

So Mint has me at just over $100k, woohoo.  I expect it will take 4-5 years to reach $250k at my current pace. Hoping to accelerate that.  We shall see.  Still have a bit of low interest debt to pay off.  Making steady progress.

Are you including house equity in your numbers? Equity in my home has gone up conservatively in the last few years about $40k thanks to housing market in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area! I feel like I'm cheating myself by adding it to my numbers. What do you do?

I include all major assets such as house, cars, and investments and exclude all other household items like jewelry, furniture, clothing, etc. I subtract all debt such as the mortgage, student loans, and other debt from the assets to calculate net worth. I exclude household items because I like to be conservative and trying to figure out the price of all of them would be too tedious and time consuming.

Personal Capital is able to calculate my net worth using that criteria so that's how I do it at any given time. I also have a spreadsheet where I manually track this and other financials but Personal Capital is my first stop.

Welcome!!

Thanks! 10k-100k took 34 months (33 of which are recorded in my journal, surprisingly). Probably similar for 100k-250k, I'd imagine.

Jan 2016     $80,165.78
Feb 2016     $88,372.39
March 2016 $101,768.81
April 2016   $106,876.35
May 2016    $106,529.21
June 2016   $109,892.28
July 2016   $115,035.02
Aug 2016   $125,235.44
Sept 2016  $126,076.92
Oct 2016    $129,441.04
Nov 2016   $135,152.36
Dec 2016   $138,352.17
Jan 2017    $147,729.69
Feb 2017    $150,339.59
Mar 2017    $140,835.79
April 2017   $140,805.57
May 2017 $149,690.19

Killed it this month! Tossed a few grand in investments and whittled down about $2,000 in debt. We should easily sail past the $150K NW mark next month, even with a June vacation, because it's 75% paid for. A few more months like this one make $200K by year's end doable.

JOINING!
-----------Found MMM mid 2015 - read all the articles chronologically -
-----------Finished MMM articles mid 2016 - started in on all the links and found the forum  -
BUT:
Despite wishing there was a place to discuss, compare, watch the 'staches grow and egg each other on, didn't find the race threads until just yesterday - so I dutifully read through the 10k race thread last night and the posts for first few rounds of the 100kto250k, and thought today would be a good day to jump in as we just hit a round number and had no one (family/friends/coworkers) to tell (besides DW and I celebrating w some cheap bubbly w dinner at home), as Mustachians are few and far between here in NYC it seems......or in hiding....

A bit on us:
I'm just going to use the MINT investment number here for the journey. Not counting the car, which is old and paid off, but oddly has started accruing value according to MINT--  It's a '99  and is apparently worth $300 more than it was in January - anyone had this happen - has it become a sought after antique? Not counting the checking accounts as I  put pretty much everything directly into Vanguard.  Not deducting the couple thousand dollars of not-yet-vested 401K as that's too much work.  No property ownership yet, so that could change everything, as we are starting to look....in NYC.....hahaha......investments are spread across  Vanguard, Fidelity, and Betterment so Mint number is easiest.

If (knock on wood) employment stays steady, I think late Jan 2018 would be our graduation estimate as we got a good portion done before I found this thread.  Probably will update twice monthly due to pay schedule.

Okay, without further ado, hello to everyone already on this thread, and here goes the proverbial hat into the ring!!!!
5/01/2017:  $198,456
5/15/2017:  $200,404 - was able to put an extra $250 in that was leftover from last month's household budget!! Plus 401k plus a little market gain gets us started!!

@TryingtoFIREinNYC,

Welcome to the thread! I generally post my updates mid-month (it's just how I started so I've kept it going) so I'd love to see another mid-month poster. And yes this a great place to encourage others to get over the hump since we're all on the same team.

I didn't start tracking our NW until Feb this year:

2/17 - 189,044
3/17 - 200,743
4/17 - 207,074
5/17 - 229,425

Will be the first time maxing out 401k this year. My focus has been saving as much as possible to get to our target number this year. Good luck to everyone!

Minor decrease from closing costs buying a house, moving, and buying a new fridge, washer and dryer. Looking at a couple months on a single income while my wife is between jobs this summer.

I just graduated from the last thread. My starting amount for this one is:

$102,235

I only count my retirement accounts and my husband's Roth (I don't know off hand how to access his 401k balance, and he doesn't have much in there anyway; I don't entirely trust my pension will exist when I retire, so I'm not counting that, either).

This amount will just fluctuate with the market for the next three months as I don't get paid in the summer, so I'll probably see you all again in September. :)

Retirement only, does not include real estate or emergency savings:

January 2015: $98,619

January 2016: $101,235
December 2016: $140,779 (total NW $269,089)

January 2017: $151,307 (total NW $276,052)
February 2017: $156,620 (total NW $285,663)
March 2017: $161,585 (total NW $302,055) received a modest bonus in March and my condo value apparently went up around $10k.
April 2017: $166,111 (total NW $306,801)
May 2017: $169,686 (total NW $327,523)

I know the total NW is over $250k but I'm focused on retirement only for this challenge. A good chunk of the NW is real estate equity.

Welcome @merlin7676 @Mezzie and @Gardo (I was following you on the 100K race)!!

5/01/2017:  $198,456
5/15/2017:  $200,404 - was able to put an extra $250 in that was leftover from last month's household budget!! Plus 401k plus a little market gain gets us started!!
5/31/2017:  $207,044 - Market wasn't particularly helpful lately, but "Cheap-Ass May Throw Down the Gauntlet" put an extra $400 or so into the kitty.

2/1/2017: INV-$117,155.67     NW-$199,327.18

6/1/2017: INV-$171,173.97     NW-$248,728.12

I'm going to stay in this thread until our investments reach 250K since that is what we will apply the 4% rule to.  The rest of our NW is just equity and our emergency fund which aren't really part of our 'stash.

Another recent 100K graduate, here! The Personal Capital odometer just turned over yesterday, so I'm super excited to join you all here.

NW 5/31/17 - $100,200

That amount represents about $85K invested, the rest in cash. My next goal is to hit $100K invested before the end of the year. If I keep up what I'm doing and nothing weird happens, I figure I'm on track to hit $200K in 2.5 years from now.

Slow month for April--lots of medical bills from DW having a baby (woo hoo!), but good markets were able to overcome.

On that subject--pre-insurance, the bills from having a baby would have been about $25,000. Let's hear it for HSAs and maxing out your annual deductible!

May 31 2017: $132,481.64

Chugging right along...
