Sept 30 update since mid-August...   from $103K to $108K.
End of Oct update:   107K (typical market fluctuation) despite adding $500 in cash.   November has some nice quarterly dividends coming due so fingers crossed the market behaves itself towards year end...
End of Nov update: 110K thanks to quarterly divys and $300 in cash saved.  Slow and steady...

Up to 109k thru October 31. It blows my mind that it is possible to improve net worth by $9k in 3 months.

Probably going to fall a bit this month, as there is an outstanding check for $6k. Bought a new car. The timing belt in my old car broke, and that did all the engine damage that can do. (Did you know that 2010 Hyundai Accents have timing belts? Well I didn't. Now I do.) It had 155k miles, and the repair would have been more than the car was worth. Sucks--that thing was a damn champ. I didn't put a dollar for repairs into that car, just maintenance. I was saving for a potential car purchase anyways, so I figured now was time--155k miles on a car that needs a repair more expensive than the car itself. I actually got another 2010 Accent, but this one only had $38k miles. $5900--and had enough in cash to just buy the thing outright. Emergency fund FTW!

Small drop, but not nearly as bad as it could have been. $107,889

It looks like I skipped this last month.  Whoops!  So, end of November against end of September

Assets
401(K): $100,785 $100,950 Maxed in June, so this is just (meh) returns.
Roth IRA: $25,070 $25,586 Maxed in January.
Taxable Brokerage: $62,354 $71,029 I am throwing money (4K/monthly) at this now that my 401K is funded and my savings is being replenished. I am also starting to invest a bit more in VGTSX to shift to a bit more international exposure.
Savings: $7,510 $8,661 This is being rebuilt, but not at 3K monthly like I hoped, because my HELOC jumped in rate and I think it makes sense to throw money there.  I'm due with our first child in four weeks, so this will probably get wiped...
Total = $195,719 $206,226

Liabilities

401(K) loan: ($13,439) ($10,400)  I'm guessing on this because my 11/30 payment isn't reflected yet.
HELOC: ($31,015) ($27,980)  Rate jumped in June from 3.49 to 5.49, so I am now throwing some more money at this.  It's probably ~4% with my tax rate.  I might do better in the market, but I'll take this small hedge, since it's a floating rate and it's secured by my residence.
Total = ($44,454) ($38,380)

Net worth = $151,265 $167,846  Up about 16K over the last two months, which is okay.  I am getting my bonus (and two more paychecks) this year, so I'm hoping I'll be at 210K by year's end.

October: $151,742.
November: $155,076

Haven't included any of hubby's numbers yet because I have been so busy. Plus I kind of like knowing how I am doing on the journey with just what I am saving. We won't hit our savings goals this year but I have to remind myself we paid off $8k in medical bills in about 12 months so that alone is an accomplishment. And this is the first year I have contributed the max to my 401k and IRA.

Dec 2016 - $101,670.70

Here's my official start. I'm up ~$1,300 in the week since I popped into this thread! That's from the $1k I used to open up my very first taxable investment account and the half of a 401k contribution that the market didn't eat.

You're killing it!

But you don't have to get "knocked down," at least on this thread, when you buy your new home. I, and many others, include all assets, including home equity, in their net worth calculation. Now I include a very low number for household goods, because if I was forced to liquidate, I'd probably get 10 cents or 20 cents on the dollar, but with a home, I think it is fair to include the equity at fair market value.

Was at about $185k start of the year (guesstimate because I wasn't tracking it back then!) and currently at $246,585.30(ish). Hoping to clear $250k before the end of the year.

Thanks Nick! I suppose I should probably count the assets for my consulting business and all as well as the cars and stuff,  but that's a whole 'nother spreadsheet of fun. Next update I'll consider including those. I was also debating whether to include invoices that have yet to be collected, but I'll wait on those until I can see the money in the account, it's easier than adjusting later if I have issues with a client.

Thanks!  It's weird, there's some psychological hump that hitting $200k has helped me over.  It was like "Meh, $150k not a big deal".  But $200k?  Big deal!  At least to me.  It's only $50k more, but damn it feels so freaking satisfying.

I think it's a big deal. And in another 50k, you get to say "quarter mil" - I have a feeling that's going to be very satisfying when we get there :-)

That might happen for us in the next couple of weeks - my wife is in the process of moving her defined-benefit pension from her former employer and rolling it to a traditional IRA, it's a $72k payout.  So $250k might come VERY quickly :)

You and I are pretty much in lock-step! I have a bit more cash than usual in my checking account at the moment (not included in my reported figures) that I'll front-load into my IRA early next year, but would be neat to see us both make a steady progress up to $250,000 together :).

I missed October (did not have a chance to number crunch), so adding the last 2 months:

September$207,022.02
October$229,254.61
November$253,036.10

I know my number for November will drop by about 10k(?) as we figure out year end and annual taxes, just have not been able to figure it out yet.

Looks like our current contract will now extend through January, although I think it will start slowing down. This is a good thing; it really helped us increase our net worth quickly, but we need a break. Should definitely be at $250K by end of the year.

I agree with @tyort1 and @tarheeldan ... very satisfying!

Very motivating to follow everyone else's progress, congratulations on the journey.

I've attached a graph again.

Hey all, I've graduated from this thread, but may be joining again soon.
I calculate net worth wonky (most would read: wrong) but I only use invested assets, and not equity.  I am purchasing a piece of cash flow investment real estate in the coming months and closing should be February.  This will incur a cash outlay of 110k.  So I'll see y'all soon.

I never participated in this thread before, but I have been following it and actively working to achieve this milestone since I first reached $100K in savings/investments back around January 2014, just prior to my 26th birthday.  Although I have been working and saving since I was 18 years old, I didn't start investing until 2013 at the age of 25, shortly after I began my new career in the private sector.

As of this week, my investment portfolio has finally exceeded $250,000 in value.  Attached is a screenshot of my investments since I began tracking them via Personal Capital in October 2014.  This figure does not include real estate, savings or property assets.  My net worth is currently about $280,000.  I will turn 29 at the end of next month.  Thanks to everyone here for the inspiration along the way!  Now the journey to $500K begins.

I'm a little confused about how and why people calculate net worth so differently in this thread. I know it's allowed, and I'm not talking about anyone in particular. I just thought the idea of this thread was to gather people in similar financial situations.

But obviously a person with $200,000 in true net worth (all assets minus all liabilities) is waaaaaay behind a person with $200,000 in investments, $25,000 in cash, and $125,000 in real estate equity.

I guess I'm just saying, that to me, such a huge spread chips away at any perceived solidarity or any kind of "we're all in the same place" vibe.

Yes I am nit-picking I suppose.

Well we don't segregate based on COL or family situation, either.  a 20-something DINK couple with 500K is doing much better than a 50-something couple with four kids with 500K, no?

I read a little bit of your journal, hilarious!  Nick miller is definitely my fav. char on New Girl.  I think you were referring to my post when you mentioned all the different ways to calc net worth.  In that case, I can only say: there's something really creepy about you, pal.  You wanna get weird, let's get weird.

Haha! That was the best possible response! I need to catch up on New Girl and definitely plan to do that over the holidays.

And you're both right - there's no way to control for exact situations. I just see some folks in this thread who are waaaaay ahead of me and I think "Damnit, I just want to go to my room and do weird stuff on my computer."

Jan 2016     $80,165.78
Feb 2016     $88,372.39
March 2016 $101,768.81
April 2016   $106,876.35
May 2016    $106,529.21
June 2016   $109,892.28
July 2016    $115,035.02
Aug 2016    $125,235.44
Sept 2016   $126,076.92
Oct 2016    $129,441.04
Nov 2016   $135,152.36
Dec 2016  $138,352.17

Up $58,186.39 for the year! I'll take that! If we can repeat that in 2017, we'd be in the $200,000 NW neighborhood. So my goal is to graduate from this thread in 2 years.  We are moving next year, and that will obviously cause some additional expenses, BUT we should be getting a decent-sized tax return in the spring (that we usually don't get) that might entirely fund one of our IRAs for the year, so that would jump start our savings, so maybe it will all balance out.

Aug 2016      $104,410.00
Sept 2016    $106,084.00
Oct 2016       $107,559.00
Nov 2016      $103,227.00
Dec 2016      $107,460.00

Posting now because my "last paycheck" of 2016 will actually hit my bank account in January so this will be my last bit of income this calendar year.  I miscalculated my TSP and HSA contributions and will be slightly under the IRS cap on both... That's annoying but in the grand scheme of things doesn't actually matter too much. This is also my last NW update before getting married in January, which will add some debt and assets to the mix :)

Posting my end-of-year update:

401K: 90,123.76
Roth: 46,794.42
E-fund: 9,508.77
Total: 146,426.95

I started posting in this thread in June, when my total was $124,660.90. So, my net worth has increased by $21,766.05 in 6 months. Holy crap!

For perspective, that increase amount is more than I used to bring home in an entire year, at my last job.

I don't know when we'll get to $250,000 because my husband just lost his job and wants to adjunct for a bit for the experience before applying to tenure track jobs but we just passed $100,000 so I want to join.  Slow but steady for me right now.

Retirement only, does not include real estate or cash savings. :

January 2015: $98,619

January 2016: $101,235
December 2016: $140,779

Total NW including real estate and cash savings: $269,089. I know the total NW is over $250k but I'm focused on retirement savings only for this challenge. Happy New Year!

I first I thought "you're rich!" and then I looked up the CHF and apparently it is not as strong as I had thought, so really you are more like me :-).
