For context: I'm 31 in a HCOL city. I'm married, but these are my own numbers since we keep our finances separate. Includes cash, retirement, and credit cards, which are used for normal expenses and paid off in full every month.

3/18: $48,533.91 (found MMM and started tracking)
3/19: $83,762.93
8/19: $101,572.33 (graduated to this thread)
3/20: $118,287.76 (-6,129.86, -4.93%)
4/20: $109,838.67 (-8,449.09, -7.14%)
5/20: $124,495.18 (+14,656.51, +13.34%)
6/20: $132,228.82 (+7,733.64, +6.21%)
7/20: $136,568.75 (+4,339.93, +3.28%)
8/20: $151,084.80 (+14,516.06, +10.63%)
9/20: $161,536.16 (+10,451.36, +6.92%)

Keep chugging along

Well, well, well. Like everyone else on the thread, I'm scratching my head about the market. I'm definitely enjoying the growth, but waiting on the edge of my seat for a downturn.

This month, we made the decision not to send the kids back to day care until at least the New Year, possibly longer. It will be tough to coordinate watching them while we both work full time, but it'll boost our ability to save quite a bit.

August's growth bumped up my projected graduation date by 6 months! (For those of you who are interested in such things: I'm calculating it based on a running average of our monthly growth).

See y'all next month!

Date
Net Worth     Annual Gain
Dec 2018     $56,494
-
Dec 2019     $86,259
$27,765

Net Worth
Monthly Gain
Jan 2020     $93,140
$6,881
Feb 2020     $93,862

Mar 2020     $90,666
($3,196)
Apr 2020     $101,232
$10,566
May 2020     $108,998
$7,766
Jun 2020     $106,480
($2,518)
Jul 2020     $113,794
$7,314
Aug 2020     $123,505

Wow, the market kicked us over the $250k mark much earlier than I had expected. I'm kind of speechless right now. Net worth increased over $50k from May 1 - September 1.

Income is steady, and I'm actually working some overtime, which is very rare. I'm on pace for $40k of new contributions in 2020 and am aiming for ~16k of total spending.

Congrats to all the recent graduates!

I’m jumping in this thread with a few ideas and thoughts in mind. I don’t plan to add house equity or extras like that. I’m not even going to add the spouse’s 401k. I’ll be solely tracking
My 401k and my Roth IRA Numbers to go toward the goal of $250k. I may add the savings account numbers later, but most of that pays toward the last of my mortgage and a basement remodel right now.

My stats:

Jul2019 — $101953
Aug2019 — $106277
Sep2019 — $111050
Oct2019 — $114791
Nov2019 — $120215
Dec2019 — $122692
Jan2020 — $120521
Feb2020 — $123625
Mar2020 — $124248
Apr2020 — $133240
May2020 — $145475
Jun2020 — $143581
Jul2020 — $151652
Aug2020 — $155546

Numbers updated thru the last day of the month.  The increase seen here may vanish as some already was wiped away with last week’s decline. Just gotta remember this is a marathon, not a sprint.  I already reached my “temp check” of getting to $150k by the end of 2020.   So I’m happy about that

07/17/2020: $103,981.86 (+$0.00)
07/31/2020: $106,885.86 (+$2,904.00)
08/17/2020: $111,111.20 (+$4,225.34.00)

08/31/2020: $112,706.75 (+$1,595.55)

Took a mini-vacation and it was a really good time. Staying the course, looking at multi-unit homes to purchase, and developing my own book of business at work. I finally saw my IRA break $20K which is neat. 401(k) is climbing fairly steadily as well. Staying the course, auto-investing, and worrying about other things for now. :-)

09/11/2020: $114,004.80 (+$1,298.05)

Smaller gains this period, likely from some dips in the market. All good though, staying the course and continuing to max everything out. My IRA hit over $20K briefly which was exciting, too, but it's back down a bit for now.

Nov 20, 2019 -- $113,800
January 15, 2020 -- $120,900
February 15, 2020 -- $136,916
March 17, 2020 -- $65,556
April 15, 2020 -- $97,329
May 15, 2020 -- $106,497
June 15, 2020 -- $144,753
July 16, 2020 -- $168,424
August 15, 2020 -- $176,358
September 15, 2020 -- $212,832

Huge month. The market rose and took my heavily leveraged portfolio with it, the contract I've been working on all summer is starting to pay off, and my company finally paid back almost $20k in accrued expenses. I was quite surprised to see how close I appear to be to the end of this race. Some major financial moves lined up for the end of the year (house renovations, I live in a wreck with sagging floors) so I may yet fall a bit, but it will be temporary.

Dang, that is amazing progress for one month.

How exactly is your portfolio heavily levered?

I have some lines of credit and a margin account that are at a low interest rate (prime), so I was able to borrow from those and invest in dividend stocks. The dividends coming in outweigh the cost of interest, and I keep the difference. I also get an advantage if the stock market goes up, since the shares I bought with borrowed money also appreciate and again, I keep the difference. I had deleveraged last November since the interest rates were getting close to my return from dividends. But since interest rates are down again, I bought back in in early April. So I magnified my return as the stock market recovered, and it's showing now. It is higher risk, since if the market falls I magnify my losses, but I can live with that.

Ben Felix explains the concept I'm using far better than I could:

Hi everyone!  Longtime lurker, have found it inspiring to read these race threads.  Thought I would finally join in : )

This is my individual net worth.  The early numbers include a house and mortgage (Zillow insanity explains some of the movement) but I now rent (will be moving soon; re-buying did not make sense).  I'm a single mom (with no child support*) and my annual income is around 60K, so I feel good about the progress I've made, even though my numbers aren't as impressive as some!

2013:    $40,287  <- divorce: started off on my own (with debt from divorce)
2014:    $42,874
2015:    $65,235  <- found MMM (was always frugal, but amazed by FIRE!
2016:    $77,445
2017:  $121,655   <- paid off all the debt!
2018:  $158,647
2019:  $143,524   <- sold house for a profit, but goodbye Zillow inflation...
2020:  $191,464

My personal fiscal year ends Aug 31, so that's the date all these numbers are from.  Now I can start posting monthly (if I remember! :) ).  I'm guessing it will take a couple of years to reach 250k, but who knows: heavily depends on the market.  I'll do my part!

*Yes, I pursued all legal remedies.  Turns out fleeing the country with felony warrants out for your arrest does put you beyond the reach of CPS.  (Yes, both the divorce and disappearance were a blessing.)

First drop since starting on this thread! A combination of turbulence in the market, and the costs associated with closing on my first duplex which is set to take place on 10/15. Keeping at it, and still up for the month.

Still having some vet expenses, as well, but carrying on. :-)

Projected Graduation date: December 2022

The market has been kind to us:

March 2020: 78,000
April 2020: 91,000
May 2020: 106,000

Glad to join the race :)

June 2020: 115,000

July 2020: 125,000 halfway there!

September 2020: 145,000. Looks like nw is increasing ~10k every month since the market crash.

For context: I'm 31 in a HCOL city. I'm married, but these are my own numbers since we keep our finances separate. Includes cash, retirement, and credit cards, which are used for normal expenses and paid off in full every month.

3/18: $48,533.91 (found MMM and started tracking)
3/19: $83,762.93
8/19: $101,572.33 (graduated to this thread)
3/20: $118,287.76 (-6,129.86, -4.93%)
4/20: $109,838.67 (-8,449.09, -7.14%)
5/20: $124,495.18 (+14,656.51, +13.34%)
6/20: $132,228.82 (+7,733.64, +6.21%)
7/20: $136,568.75 (+4,339.93, +3.28%)
8/20: $151,084.80 (+14,516.06, +10.63%)
9/20: $161,536.16 (+10,451.36, +6.92%)
10/20: $151,832.73 (-9.703.43, -6.01%)

Easy come, easy go. The loss this month comes from a combination of paying for long-planned orthodontia up front (I had the cash and it got me a discount), along with market fluctuations.

Well I'm shocked. I was certain 10/1 would be red. Sadly, it's all contributions. In addition to my 401K and Roth contributions (which are automated to max over 12-months) I opened a taxable brokerage to toss "extra" cash into each month. It's weird to be in a position where I need to take the tax hit on my investments because I am investing so much - I honestly didn't expect that would happen for a few more years. COVID has been surprisingly good to me financially, even as it takes away everything else. On top of that, my stock options continue to vest a little more each month, which is a significant boost thanks to their current valuation. My company is going through a professional valuation update right now and I expect the value of my options to get a good bump once I hear the outcome of that. Not sure exactly when I'll get the update, but I expect sometime in Q1.

I am in a really, really good place financially. Even on a down month I've been able to end up green because of how much I am contributing to the market. In addition, most of my plays should see a nice bump in October as earnings are announced - a nice reprieve from bloody September.

I complain, but I am up $70,000 for the year - almost double what I was up for the entire year in 2019 - and there is no sign of thing slowing down, if anything I hope to be up $100K by the end of year. I have nothing to complain about.

Hi all! Finally joining this thread after spending a few years in the 10K to 100K thread. Here's my history from that thread:

9/29/17 - $11,511
6/30/18 - $36,000
1/31/19 - $53,028
6/30/2019 - $75,757
12/31/2019 - $96,225
1/31/2020 - $96,048
2/29/2020 - $94,556
3/31/2020 - $92,438
4/30/2020 - $101,897

This was previously just my personal net worth, however with the graduation I've decided to move to household net worth, so Mrs. Fiction gets to join the fun too. It makes too much sense at this point, given how intertwined our finances have become.

Background - I'm 35 and my wife is 31. DD is two and we have another on the way this summer. Looking to buy a house around this time next year.

Total joint net worth as of 4/30/2020 is $203,198. We are debt-free outside of whatever is on our credit cards, which always get paid each month.

With some market cooperation, some inspiration and some hard work (and some luck!) We just might be able to graduate this thread by the end of the year.

Looking forward to following along with everyone's progress!

New Joint Tracker

                  Solo NW      Joint NW
4/30/2020 - 101,897        203,198
5/31/2020 - 109,544        218,023
6/30/2020 - 114,288        227,585
7/31/2020 - 117,338        236,196
8/31/2020 - 128,213        251,254

Well now! That happened a little faster than anticipated. I'll probably hang around this thread a little while longer. My wife is officially on maternity leave after the birth of our second child this month and who know's what will happen with the markets, so I don't want to leave this thread to quickly only to have to come right back!

New Joint Tracker

                  Solo NW      Joint NW
4/30/2020 - 101,897        203,198
5/31/2020 - 109,544        218,023
6/30/2020 - 114,288        227,585
7/31/2020 - 117,338        236,196
8/31/2020 - 128,213        251,254
9/30/2020 - 125,543    246,779

Well my decision to stay in the thread turned out to be the right one. Market downturn coupled with reduced income due to my wife's maternity leave and increased expenses led to a significant NW drop. That's ok though. We'll keep pressing on.

Can't believe it. I guess this is the power of dollar cost averaging, especially when the market is going down (when COVID first hit). I did find a tweak i need to make in my calc - back when i was saving for a house down payment, extra money was going in Ally. Now the extra money is going in VTSAX, so i've been underestimating progress some by assuming lower returns! I'm going to stick around for 1 more month for good measure.
Survived (barely) at $250,469. Keep at it and see you all on the other side!

03-2020   $83,326.38

Bit of a sad turn of events but figured that would happen. Saving has been tough this month with a move and being unemployed. Starting month 4, but as companies are entering Q4 hopefully jobs start opening up again!

20 Dec 18 - 37,800
1 Sept 20 - 100,406
1 Oct 20 - 100,147

Well this was a difficult month but I feel confident enough to join this new race now! Took me about two years to get there, pretty happy about that. My objective is to graduate by mid 2023, ambitious version before 2023. I will have to stay disciplined and keep my job of course.

All amounts in AUD which gives me a slight advantage. I add up all assets, got no debt, don't own my house.

Looking forward to get to know everyone and race to the next magic number. Short term target - 110k in December, 140k in May 2021.

July 2018: AUD$51,000
October 2020: AUD$112,301
Goal: mid 2023 with my current low wage, but actively looking for something better at the moment so it will hopefully be sooner than that

I am using this challenge for my retirement savings.

--------------------
12/31/16     107k
12/31/17     137k
12/31/18     110k
12/31/19     204k
-------------------
03/31/20     170k
06/30/20     220k

09/01/20    252k

Was expecting to reach the milestone sometime next year. But when I checked today, I found my retirement accounts totaled $252k. I am not sure how long the markets will keep me graduated.
--------------------
10/01/20  247.7k
--------------------
Came down below 250k at the end of 3rd quarter
