My N/W grew by £5,780.77 to a new total of £78,859.58.

September wasn't pretty....

My N/W shrank by £3,114.76 to a new total of £75,744.82.

My cash accounts are actually higher than the previous month, but my pension and other investments took a big hit.  This figure is from 22/09.

The new period of high inflation certainly seems to be marking the end of the golden years for investing (following the '08 crash) - fortunately, it should be a good couple of years for all of us in this thread who can buy stocks a little cheaper.

Yes, I think we've now entered a period of difficulty that will last a while with several factors that aren't helping to get us out of this position. Inflation was 17,1% here in September.

We are extremely lucky to have refinanced our mortgage @ 1,8% for a 20-year fixed term a couple of months ago. We'll partly pay for the renovation of our house with that new mortgage and we're hoping to become almost completely self-sufficient for energy. Our student loans (we don't have a lot left, a couple of months of income) are also fixed at 0% for the next couple of years. When our fixed rate expires, we hope to be able to pay off the remaining balance all at once. For now we'll just let inflation eat away at our debts.

I suppose with the current developments in the UK, buying another house / getting a new mortgage isn't a realistic thing for you, at least not in the short term. We were joking that maybe in a bit we could finally afford our dream holiday cottage in the Yorkshare Dales but obviously, the past couple of weeks must have been extremely tense for everyone in your country. I hope the economy will settle down a bit now with the latest developments.  I imagine the political uncertainty will be far from over. The political uncertainty is just about starting here, with our government still very reluctant to act while our inflation is extremely high. I live in a working class neighbourhood with lots of badly maintained council homes and neighbours with modest incomes. I'm not sure if our government is noticing how much lower the quality of living of those people already is compared to a few years ago. Our government ministers live in nice affluent neighbourhoods, I don't think they really understand how bad things are getting for the lower classes. I've never experienced any societal tensions like this and I worked in social services during the last recession. During the last recession, only those who lost their jobs got into trouble. As long as they kept their jobs, people didn't really see the recession happening in their bank account, but everyone feels inflation in their bank account.

Tracking cash savings and liquid investments (so excluding pensions and house value and my DH cash savings, since he has his own account which I'm not tracking)

December 2020: EUR 25,141
December 2021: EUR 40,501

January 2022: EUR 40,553
February 2022: EUR 38,767
March 2022: EUR 38,149
April 2022: EUR 40,606
May 2022: EUR 44,527
June 2022: EUR 43,915
July 2022: EUR 41,966
August 2022: EUR 45,309
September 2022: EUR 46,053

Goal for 2022: EUR 50K

Finally recovered my spreadsheet and did a recalculation using the new definitions for my total liquid funds.
We received a nice refund from the electricity and heating, since we started to save big on those by just changing some habits (and try to incorporate these habits onto our teens). I put these into savings to get through the winter, where we will have a higher bill.

Further, managed to put the same amount into stocks and still buying stocks on sale (hopefully). The dividend payments are still keeping a steady level, so it looks OK.

@Imma: I totally hear you on the refinancing. We also did one a little earlier and I'm now so happy that we did. 2.65% for another 20 years. This will definitely be eaten away by inflation in the next 20 years or so.
And I agree on the social tension. Although I live in a nice neighbourhood with a lot of relatively well-off people, I surely feel the tension in other neighbourhoods in our city on the energy prices and the inflation. Hopefully there will be some clarity in the near future.

You're very lucky that you can refinance, fixed, for 20 years.  The longest options in the UK tend to be 10 years.  My fixed rate (@ 1.49%) ends September '23, so I daren't think what our UK base rate will be by then.  I'm half tempted to pay the fine for refinancing early just to try and lock in at 4%!

I think we're going to hold off moving.  We wanted to upgrade our house, but I'm worried about the uncertainty.  The plan right now is to sit tight and wait for the perfect house to come on the market.  If we see one we love, we might still go for it, but we won't rush into anything.

There's a lot of political uncertainty here.  Strikes, riots, cost of living crisis, Ukraine etc.  The new government seems completely shambolic (already making u-turns on key decisions).  But we have had that uncertainty since Brexit, so nothing new - the UK has gone bat-shit crazy in the last decade.

I think the Queen's death has had a huge impact on the entire country.  Although we all knew it was going to happen eventually, it really does mark the end of an era.  She's been the constant pillar of our culture for six decades.  People hate change and even though it won't change our day-to-day, the UK feels like a very different place now that she's gone.  The only way I can describe it is as a national identity crisis.  It feels a bit like a grandparent dying (which is crazy when you think about it lol), but people are really sad about it (the day she died there were people crying in the streets where I live!)

Crazy times... just gotta keep investing lol.

Not as bad as last month, but not at all pretty.  The economic situation is very strange right now.  I obviously haven't witnessed a situation like this in my relatively short FIRE journey.

On the bright side, stocks are cheap.  Just keep swimming...

In the green again. We will move to a new place in the beginning of next year, which of course comes with a few expenses. So progress will likely be slower the next few months, but the new place is a really good deal and in the long run will save us a lot of money compared to similar apartments/houses, while also being a really nice place to live.

Tracking cash savings and liquid investments (so excluding pensions and house value and my DH cash savings, since he has his own account which I'm not tracking)

December 2020: EUR 25,141
December 2021: EUR 40,501

January 2022: EUR 40,553
February 2022: EUR 38,767
March 2022: EUR 38,149
April 2022: EUR 40,606
May 2022: EUR 44,527
June 2022: EUR 43,915
July 2022: EUR 41,966
August 2022: EUR 45,309
September 2022: EUR 46,053
October 2022: EUR 46,134

Goal for 2022: EUR 50K

We decided to do an extra payment on the mortgage, so increase is just small because of that. Net worth however increased!
Still hoping to reach my goal at the end of the year.

Well, last time I posted the stock market was in good shape :-D

Nevertheless, NW increased to 80k since June, that is +10k in 5 months.

The next few months will be choppy, since we are buying a piece of land and will have costs associated with that (taxes, paperwork...)
Once the house is build, the ride will smooth out again.

Well Well Well - It has been a while :-D

Very much has happened since that post. We did buy that piece of land, combined finances, and locked in a 15year fixed mortgage before the worst of the interest surges kicked in. The house is still under construction due to the everything shortage, but I am very happy nonetheless. Thanks to the right plays in the stock market, and even while paying the costs associated with house-buying, we increased our net worth to a combined

201k!

So both in terms of non-married or married finance situation, our family is graduating to the next thread. Thanks to you wonderful mustachian crowd and may you all succeed!

Hey everyone! So excited to make it to this thread finally. Here are my numbers as of this morning.

3/4/2022: $12,100 cash + $1,034 investments - $0 debt = $13,134 NW

7/12/2022: $14,300 cash + $2,450 investments - $0 debt = $16,750 NW

Finally graduated college at the ripe old age of 27 and landed a good job, so I'm looking forward to watching my stache grow at a faster rate!

I had hoped to be closer to $20K in net worth this time of year, but I spent a dumb amount of money furnishing my new apartment with brand new stuff.

I was walking through Goodwill yesterday and realized I would've been just as happy with the used furniture, dishes and appliances they were selling. I still have a lot to learn but I've been learning a lot by devouring every episode of the Mad Fientist podcast. Really interested in maxing my 401k and IRA somehow.

11/5/2022: $18,312 cash + $4,002 401k + $4,560 IRA = $26,874 NW

November update:

My N/W grew by £4,766.18 to a new total of £78,788.16.

I was expecting a horrific month.  I spent quite a bit on Christmas, Birthdays and booking a holiday for a stag do.  I'm paying all the household bills whilst my wife is on Mat Leave and I've had what feels like quite a spendy month away from those things too.  Yet it was a great month.  Stocks, lol.

Just shows how important it is to ignore all the background noise and continue following the instructions!   I really want to go above £80k by the end of December.

Still plugging away. Been a good year to bring down my average purchase price. Well done to everyone staying the course.

29/04/2020: €18.544
31/05/2020: €21.280,05

Goal 01/01/2021: €27.500 Excluding sinking funds for holidays and health insurance, including student loan at 0.01% interest.

Good increase due to holiday payment this month. Will see how things go from here, as I have quit my job.

01/08/2020: €22,701.09. From here on out my total will go down, as I am currently unemployed and have lived of the remaining payments. Let's see where we get.

I have been pretty AWOL from this forum and this thread, since I have had a few years with limited employment and life happening. I am glad to see that I am back where I started XD. Its a couple of days early, but these seem to be the numbers for now:

November 22: € 21,636.38 +€ 972.77.

This is a very good month and I have been very diligent with the budget. Also we have received a high energy prices subsidie from the governement, which helps a lot.

Third high-spend month in a row, and hopefully the last for a while. October was also the last full month of my grad student income - this month I will start making >$50k salary for the first time ever!

I was wrong on several counts last month. I had a fourth high-spending month (and a pitiful 8% savings rate - the NW increase is all from the market). And while I started my new job this month, my first paycheck from it won't arrive until this Friday, so THIS is my official End Of Grad School savings mark.

Tracking cash savings and liquid investments (so excluding pensions and house value and my DH cash savings, since he has his own account which I'm not tracking)

December 2020: EUR 25,141
December 2021: EUR 40,501

January 2022: EUR 40,553
February 2022: EUR 38,767
March 2022: EUR 38,149
April 2022: EUR 40,606
May 2022: EUR 44,527
June 2022: EUR 43,915
July 2022: EUR 41,966
August 2022: EUR 45,309
September 2022: EUR 46,053
October 2022: EUR 46,134
November 2022: EUR 46,770

Goal for 2022: EUR 50K

Savings are a lot harder with increasing prices for groceries and energy and my salary not keeping up with it (hopefully in January it will increase, we only have a yearly salary review). Still hoping for a nice bonus in December which will allow me to get to my 2022 goal. Time to closely review spending and cut out more unneccessary items......

@Tass : you're in great shape getting out of grad school with this net worth!
@triple7stash: almost there! 2022 will be your graduation year from this thread!

Look on the bright side - you're buying shares cheaply.  In the long run this period of time will benefit us all greatly.

It is very frustrating to see though.

Another red month and net worth is lower than 12 month ago for the 2nd month in a row, despite savings of roughly 14k between November last year and now.

Look on the bright side - you're buying shares cheaply.  In the long run this period of time will benefit us all greatly.

It is very frustrating to see though.

Oh I am viewing this as a positive in the long-run. I think it especially helps to train a steady hand while relatively "little" money is at stake early in the accumulation phase. For people that started investing 2009 after the financial crisis, have large stashes now and experienced mostly only upwards markets until recently this might be a lot more difficult to handle.

** had a dismal financial year. Or I should say, I made some VERY bad investment choices (listened to a friend about an 'investment opportunity' and of course, it flopped).  Had planned to have graduated out of this thread during '22.

However no need to fuss, I've self-flagellated enough. Shall move forward and make better choices in this upcoming year.

Tracking cash savings and liquid investments (so excluding pensions and house value and my DH cash savings, since he has his own account which I'm not tracking)

December 2020: EUR 25,141
December 2021: EUR 40,501
December 2022: EUR 50,344

Goal for 2023: EUR 60K

YES!!!!! I managed to get to my 2022 goal of EUR 50K (just barely, but did it!). This is the halfway mark......!
I spent some time doing my 2023 plans and EUR 60K is a stretch, but doable if we keep very strict to budgets. There will be some travel this year, a few large (expected) expenses, but I'm hoping we can keep stuffing money away to continue our road to 100K.
