Tracking investments, emergency fund and additional pension investments (all to be used to retire together with SO!)
(not tracking company pension investments, house value and current accounts / special project savings)

15 May 2020: EUR 17,034 (started tracking)
15 December 2020: EUR 23,325

31 January 2021: EUR 24,040
28 February 2021: EUR 25,103
31 March 2021: EUR 26,263
30 April 2021: EUR 27,109
31 May 2021: EUR 30,039
30 June 2021: EUR 30,721
31 July 2021: EUR 31,784
(2021 goal: EUR 35K)

Nice and steady increase. Next month will be a challenge since we will go on a 2 week holiday. Although we will not leave the country, there will be extra spending.....

@Tass : you will get there. I'm with you in the slow camp and we CAN do it on smaller paychecks. It is really possible! As long as we see the numbers going up, there is a win.

Nothing special this month. Still going in the right direction. Did spend some extra money on fun things because it's summer and I want to enjoy life for a bit. But it's not like I bought a boat or something. My splurges include buying a new bikini (a nice fitted one, not one of those cheap tie string bikini's) a few books and a new pair of boots for winter.

You're still doing great! Slow but steady wins the race. Especially to those of us with "normal" wages, having this kind of money is life-changing. I mean, look at @Tass are you still a PhD student? How many PhD students have that kind of money? It will give you so many options even at the beginning of your career.

7/31/20- $33340

7/21/21- $93777.25
8/4/21- $97766

Had a few gigs, also got a bonus unexpectedly and a promotion.  I legit have never gotten either before in my life (most of the jobs I work it's not really possible).  Seriously considering to leave one of my jobs since I am in over my head with wedding stuff/music gigs/working 6 days a week.  Hard decisions to make but grateful I have the possibility to leave something and be financially still better than ever.  I guess I won't put in my notice until at least I graduate here...two weeks fingers crossed!!!

Also excited since one of my goals is having at least $50k stashed towards tax bomb for student loans in 2035 (based on current plan/legislation).  I realized that $22000 of my investments are for that so feeling better now about quitting one job.

11/1/2020: $53,942 (+1,189)
12/1/2020: $56,152 (+2,210)
1/8/2021: $63,512 (+7,360)
2/5/2021: $67,571 (+4,059)
3/3/2021: $70,618 (+3,047)

7/6/2021: $90,092 (+5,135)
8/5/2021: $96,511 (+6,419)

Second highest month to date, due to the child tax credit payment we received in July. Our dog had to have emergency surgery, bill hasnt come for that yet but I expect it to take a nice chunk out of our "emergency fund". Depending on the outcome of that we might be reaching 100k by September instead. :)

I am still a PhD student! I hope not for that much longer. I have heard a former student talked about with awe for graduating with $30k saved and I definitely smile quietly to myself when I hear that. (To be fair, that was also 15 years ago and he graduated much faster than I did.)

Aiming for FI (and having a partner on board) definitely makes me feel a lot of freedom in choosing what I want to do next. I know empirically that I don't need to make a huge paycheck, and I also know exactly how much freedom a big paycheck will buy me if I do make one.

I'd like to join in, but how are most people calculating?

Our cash savings plus investments I'm actively working on include:

EF cash: $3,500

Vanguard Roth IRA: $7,517.95

Robinhood: $94.48

= $11,112.43

There's also about $44,000 in the retirement account from my husband's old job, but I usually ignore that since we won't have access to those funds until well after I hope we can retire.

And we have 529 accounts and savings accounts we are using for saving up towards being able to help our kids with college/other launching into adulthood expenses.  Those add up to over $14,000, but we won't be using any of that for our retirement.

And we have a mortgage (our only debt) at $212,000.

So are we going by total net worth or retirement savings?

@la Condessa , it's really up to you :). Personally, I track our investments and savings on here, leaving out the most liquid cash.  I don't think you can go wrong tracking some aspect of your financial picture to grow to SIX FIGURES

Good luck.

I calculate retirement/investments/small cash savings but I leave out home equity as we plan on staying where we are and not cashing out that equity anytime soon.

Had possibly my best month ever I think.

My N/W grew by £2,846.97 to a new total of £54,453.44.  I've already surpassed the total increase in my N/W in 2020 which, considering it's August feels crazy (although I can blame COVID for last year).

I got married last month, which was amazing.  Now that's out the way I was hoping to boost my savings.  But we've been very lucky and should be expecting a baby next Spring - so I guess we have a new 'thing' to save towards.  Exciting times and even though my N/W is modest compared to the majority on this forum, it's given me the platform to increase my happiness and reduce stress.  I have no financial concerns whatsoever.

Congratulations @Manchester , that's great news! I think you've mentioned wanting to start a family asap after marriage, I'm so happy for both of you that it happened so quickly. And I'm glad to hear you're starting this exciting new part of your life without any kind of financial stress.

I think all of us Europeans make slower progress than the members from the other side of the Atlantic, but we have to keep in mind our societies are so different. Our wages are lower but we don't have to worry as much about catastrophic life events. I'm pretty sure you're doing fantastic compared to the median of your age category in the UK. And honestly, probably compared to your parents' age category too.

Thanks Imma!
When our original date was pushed back a year the thing we were most upset about was the delay to starting our family.  We just presumed it could take months/years of trying before it happened.

Yes, we definitely make slower progress this side of the pond!  But we have better welfare/health services/state pensions than our US counterparts, so it's swings and roundabouts I guess.

I don't think half of my school friends will get to a £50k N/W at any point in their lives.  They just don't have the right mentality.  Going off this link https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-48759591 My personal net worth is similar to an 'average family aged between 31-40'.  If I did mine and my wife's combined with house included it would be closer to families in their 50s!

So we're doing pretty well compared to average.  Let's revisit that in a year though when I find out how expensive babies are!  :D

I hope you're doing well?

Over 80k! (and also managed to pay off a small line of credit this month :) ) I will have to curb savings for the next few months in order to catch up on tax instalments but feels great to get to a new milestone.

I think all of us Europeans make slower progress than the members from the other side of the Atlantic
Even comparing on one side of the ocean allows for vast differences.

Yes, and there are even significant differences between us in North America since most Canadians don't have to worry as much about health-care costs (but likely have a different tax situation in orders to compensate for that)

Yes, I'm certainly doing well! A bit of pandemic fatigue like everyone else I suppose. The pandemic forced me to change careers, but I started a much better paid job with much better benefits about a year ago. It also turns out I have more a natural talent for this type of job than for my previous work, which was a pleasant surprise. I've been working non-stop since then and I could use a few weeks off right now.

With all the insecurities in the world, I'm glad I followed the "sensible" path and built up some net-worth early in life. We lived a sort-of boring life in our 20s, but we are pretty much "rich" in our 30s now. I have a degree but I took evening classes while working instead of the normal university experience. I borrowed some money to pay tuition and books but when I got my degree my student loan was €4500. We bought a former council home when I was 24. It wasn't fancy but we owned it. Our income has tripled since we bought it and the value has more than doubled and recently we've been able to save a lot. We're in the richest 25% in our age category and that's without inherited wealth or excessive salaries. 2021 will be the first year we're going to have an above-average income.

We didn't do any work on our home when we bought it, except for painting, but we are going to do it up next year. And we're going to loan money for it. Hold your facepunches until you've finished reading. It hasn't been upgraded since 1980 and stuff has stopped working and we're getting leaks etc. So it's necessary. And our bank is willing to loan us the money at 0,9%. So we're getting a nice new bathroom and kitchen and an extension, and we'll upgrade the insulation significantly so our energy use will go down by at least half. Bank was willing to give us about €300.000 based on income and LTV but we thought that was a bit excessive for a two-up two-down :) .

A few years ago I would never have taken on a debt to make my house more "fancy". But this debt is practically free, we're pretty terrible at DIY and we both work a LOT. So we could get a cheap Ikea kitchen and install it ourselves and it would cost almost nothing, but the result would also be terrible and wonky and "just good enough". We're still not planning on getting gold taps and marble floors but everything will be nice-looking, durable and professionally installed. And we'll probably end up richer afterwards because the value will go up more than our mortgage. Building wealth is not just about being sensible but also about being smart with money.

I hope everything is going well with the pregnancy! I'm sure financially you'll do fine even with a baby. From what I've heard from friends, the newborn stage isn't that expensive, although I suppose that does depend on cost of childcare. That would probably be the main expensive. I don't know how parental leave works there, in my country it can be quite expensive, but you've got enough money saved so that won't be an issue.

One more day left in August so numbers will be updated tomorrow.

Tracking investments, emergency fund and additional pension investments (all to be used to retire together with SO!)
(not tracking company pension investments, house value and current accounts / special project savings)

15 May 2020: EUR 17,034 (started tracking)
15 December 2020: EUR 23,325

31 January 2021: EUR 24,040
28 February 2021: EUR 25,103
31 March 2021: EUR 26,263
30 April 2021: EUR 27,109
31 May 2021: EUR 30,039
30 June 2021: EUR 30,721
31 July 2021: EUR 31,784
31 August 2021: EUR 31,331
(2021 goal: EUR 35K)

As expected, our holiday and the back to school expenses of the kids took a little bite out of the stash, but not as much as I was expecting (thanks to markets....). Still on track to my 2021 goal!

Now it is time to build my EF back up as allot of it was used on the updating of the new house.
Looking forward to keep this progress going. Good luck everyone and see you in the next thread!

I am back. I took a break this summer from reporting because we had some headaches/repairs to deal with on our FL house. All in all ended up spending just under $20k on needed repairs to the house, lawn and tree maintenance. We have pretty much replaced/fixed every large ticket item in the FL house as this point, so unless one of those trees falls on the house and takes out the roof, I am hopeful we will be in the clear for the rest of the year.

It is now the beginning of September so we are moving on and looking forward to putting money in savings/retirement accounts again. Thank God for rental house emergency funds or we would have been sunk. Now to fill it back up.

Wow this month has been really hard. Our dogs surgery came out to be way more than anticipated due to lingering infection. Back to school costs. Then our car died, cracked engine block. Juggling multiple quarantines since our kids went back to school three weeks ago. I am just glad I was in the positive this month.

Holy shiz I am graduating from this thread!  Less than 2 years, went from $0 to over $100k.  I started with ~$30k income (which was an outlier, I'd made $20k a year or less the rest of my life).  Last year I made $43k before taxes, this year should be closer to $50k I think.  Adulting so hard just as 40 comes up (I opened up my first IRA on my 38th birthday...this year hit $100k by it and also I will get married 5 days later)

Definitely doing all my "bank robberies" (various bank and credit card and rando bonuses) and following a good investment plan (lil controversial to some here, definitely not that VTI only shiz, but it works for me...I'm well diversified so I SWAN) got me here.

Oct 2019- $1000
Nov 2019- $2340
Dec 2019- $2779
Jan 2020- $5658
Feb 2020- $5539
Mar 2020- $5024
Apr 2020- $5444
May 2020- $8302  (wherein I finally got some of unemployment)
June 2020- $20864 (wherein I got more unemployment plus the EIDL)
mid July 2020- $31724 (got the rest of the backpay, woohoo!)
7/31/20- $33340
9/2/20- $36366
9/17/20 - $42978
10/2/20- $43800
10/31/20- $47854
11/11/20- $53709
12/23/20- $64158
1/8/21- $69542
3/23/21- $81890
4/10/21- $88405
5/2/21- $94414
7/21/21- $93777.25
8/4/21- $97766
9/7/21- $101,806

On to the next thread and maybe will start a new one here which is goal of $50k in taxable/savings accounts, to pay off my student loan tax bomb if that's ever due (based on current projections)

Slow progress! Bought the rest of the shares in my house and travelled. Unfortunately had to quarantine in a quarantine hotel on my return to the UK. Cost of quarantine £2,280. Progress feels really disappointing at the moment.

My N/W grew by £2,846.97 to a new total of £54,453.44.  I've already surpassed the total increase in my N/W in 2020 which, considering it's August feels crazy (although I can blame COVID for last year).

Another month in the right direction despite my investments not performing up to their recent high standards.

My N/W grew by £1,721.56 to a new total of £56,175.

3 more updates to go this year.  I should pass my target of £60k by 31/12/21.

First drop in a while but I paid a tax instalment of $1000, some investments went downhill, had an unexpected brake failure ($1000 fix) and bought a ski pass (an anticipated yearly event but still a good chunk of change)..so not too surprising.

Will aim to cut spending the last few months of 2021 so that I can continue paying my tax instalments in a timely manner and hopefully grow savings a bit too before year-end. Would love to end the year above $85,000.

Tracking investments, emergency fund and additional pension investments (all to be used to retire together with SO!)
(not tracking company pension investments, house value and current accounts / special project savings)

15 May 2020: EUR 17,034 (started tracking)
15 December 2020: EUR 23,325

31 January 2021: EUR 24,040
28 February 2021: EUR 25,103
31 March 2021: EUR 26,263
30 April 2021: EUR 27,109
31 May 2021: EUR 30,039
30 June 2021: EUR 30,721
31 July 2021: EUR 31,784
31 August 2021: EUR 31,331
30 September 2021: EUR 31,508
(2021 goal: EUR 35K)

Tiny.....tiny.....tiny...... but still an increase this month. Feels a bit disappointing, since I did my normal contributions and these are more than this increase. But hey, this is how markets work. Only 3 months to go for this year. Hopefully I can still make the goal!

01/10/2021: 55.405,64 € (-132,80 €)

Savings were roughly 850 €, the downturn happened due to stockmarket.

My basement was broken into and my two bikes were stolen. On top of that they (him/her?) also stole my biking shoes, lights, helmet and even the tire pump. My girlfriends bike, my skis and some other non-valuable stuff was left, so I guess it was just one person and he/her couldn't carry more than two bikes.

In true mustachian fashion I self insured, because I don't have many valuable possession. So sadly on that front I got unlucky and household insurance would have been the better option. Hindsight is 20/20 though. I got a pretty basic Fixie bike as a replacement to get around, but will eventually need to replace my gravel bike. This especially hurts as I got my old one on ebay for fairly cheap and prices on ebay have nearly doubled here recently. It is near impossible to buy new bikes, because all vendors are out of stock due to supply chain issues and way more people showing interest in biking due to the corona crisis. So I either swallow the pill and get an equal replacement for way more than I originally paid on ebay, get a cheaper but worse replacement on ebay, or just wait until prices come down again but don't get to ride in the meantime.

11/30/20 - SEP Balance $ 15524.45 + Roth $ 1770.76 - Student loan balance $ 6897.45 = $ 10,397.76
12/30/20 - SEP Balance $ 16106.09 + Roth $ 1813.94 - Student loan balance $ 6306.71 = $ 11,613.32
01/29/21 - SEP + Roth $ 20,139.02 - Student loan balance $ 5,316.32 = $ 14,822.70
02/28/21 - SEP + Roth $ 21,680.41 - Student loan balance $ 4,000.15 = $ 17,680.26
03/31/21 - SEP + Roth $ 22,823.38 - Student loan balance $ 2,994.55 = $ 19,828.83
04/27/21 - SEP + Roth $ 24,365.29 - Student loan balance $ 1,699.29 = $ 22,666.00
05/31/21 - SEP + Roth $ 25,063.59 - Student loan balance $ 0 = $ 25,063.59 - Student loan is paid off!!!
8/21/21 - SEP + Roth $ 27,113.71
9/30/21 - SEP + Roth $ 27,063.71

I added $1000 this month to my SEP, but due to market flux, I look like I have a loss. But I am in this for the long game, so I know this month I bought these funds on sale, just keep buying.
