Not too much contribution from the market this month, but managed to do well with plain old SR. Goal remains 100k before 2020.

Since repman has graduated to the $100k-250k group, I thought I would take up the mantle of linking to the spreadsheet (and updating it when I can).

Thanks for doing this @DadJokes !

This includes all our retirement and personal accounts for assets. It includes our credit cards, student loan, and mortgage for liabilities. It DOES NOT include our home value.

April 2018 - $52,917.42
May 2018  - $58,400.19
June 2018 - $59,686.34
July 2018  - $65,798.53
Aug 2018 - $72,231.70
Sept 2018 - $76,755.71
Oct 2018 -  $64,348.89
Nov 2018 - $70,839.76
Dec 2018 - $58,351.73
Jan 2019 - $78,256.31
Feb 2019 - $87,795.97
Mar 2019 - $67,121.29

This was the big month that I knew was coming. We had to purchase another vehicle. Had to take out a loan for it since we are late to this FI party. Unlike some, I don't count the value of our home or our vehicles in our net worth. It makes our numbers look a little less rosy, but it's also more realistic since we can't use the value of our home or vehicle as a liquid asset.

Hello everyone! It is my first time posting in this thread, I just made by way over from the race to $10k thread which I just surpassed.

Here is a basic breakdown of the numbers as of the end of the day today:

Total Cash/Cash Equivalents: $31,642
Total Liabilities: $20,131

Net Worth: $11,511

Virtually all of my liabilities are student loans. I also have some minor balances on my credit cards, which I pay off monthly. I've been aggressively attacking the student loans (see my participation in the student loan challenge if curious) and have made steady progress.

As for asset composition,  20% are in checking accounts, 13% is in my HSA and 67% is in my 401k.

9/29/17 - $11,511 (First post in thread)
6/30/18 - $36,000
7/31/18 - $38,676
8/31/18 - $40,277
9/30/18 - $50,572
10/31/18 - $46,085
11/30/18 - $48,956
12/31/18 - $46,003
1/31/19 - $53,028
2/28/19 - $58,276
3/31/2019 - $67,340

March Notes

Big month - I received a bonus and we got our tax refund. Did have some large unusual expenses including an $800 car repair bill and $1,400 in medical bills for the DD, otherwise the month would have been extraordinary. I can't complain though, progress is progress and everyone is happy and healthy!

This was a very busy month for my family and I.
First I sold off my full sized truck. Had been holding onto it because of I just didn't want to let it go, but knew it was time to make a move on from it. I bought a little ford focus hatchback to replace it. Paid for it in full!

Have been getting everything ready for my family of 4 to become a family of 5 this Friday! My wife C-section is scheduled for Friday and it will be our first little girl. Very excited about it! Thankfully all of our premium has been meet already for this year so everything from here on out the insurance is covering, which will most likely include some NICU stay for the little one.

Other than that we have just been going along as smoothly as we currently can.
Keep up the good work everyone!

Hi everyone. I spent 24 months in the Race to Positive Net Worth thread and 2 months in Saving to $10K. Happy to join everyone here now! I'm really starting to feel the momentum as things have started to turn positive for me, and can't wait to graduate from this thread too.

You should pat yourself on the back -- you're doing great @peppermint!   You are covering this ground way faster than I did!

On target for 100k around June. Progress has slowed a bit due to some short term saving pots being filled for house renovations (including roof replacement) which are not being tracked as part of net worth.

First I sold off my full sized truck.

Have been getting everything ready for my family of 4 to become a family of 5 this Friday!

Congrats on getting rid of the truck! I am currently trying my best to convince my husband that he does not need to buy a 4-door pickup truck for his upcoming vehicle purchase. He does use a truck for work and would like to be able to cart our two kiddos around, but there's gotta be a better way!

And best wishes for an easy delivery for your wife on Friday!

I've been using Personal Capital to track our net work for a few months, this will be a fun place to keep track and more importantly keep ourselves on the saving path!  I've only used the site to factor investment/retirement accounts against mortgage and car loan balance, I have cash set aside for home improvements\emergency so I didn't want that money to show a inflated NW, also have not used homes value to factor into the calculation.

September 1, 2018 - $16,853
October 1, 2018 - $20,234
April 2, 2019 - $64,781 (forgot about updating this, but was pretty exciting to see!)

I hadn't checked the value of our rental property since we bought it in 2014, but I finally did and it is now worth about 18k more than we paid for it. This is the reason for the huge jump this month. Looks like hitting 100k by year's end is a slight possibility!

2019
Jan 2019: 49,400
Feb 2019: 52,900
Mar 2019: 55,500

Apr 2019: 59,500 (+4000)

March was an extra paycheck month for us - hooray! We would've had a bit more to stash but we had to pay some back taxes and invested in some supplies for our new veggie garden. I did stash a big chunk in Mr. Frass's IRA which felt very satisfying.

Some upcoming expenses that might put a damper in our saving momentum are looming - adding an extra day or two of daycare ($90 - $180/wk) and purchasing a new (used) vehicle which would increase our insurance/fuel/maintenance costs ($250/mo) and debt payments ($250/mo?).

Happy Spring and keep up the good work everyone!

I've debated when it is most appropriate to recalculate real estate value, with the four options being (1) a monthly estimate, (2) an annual estimate, (3) after an appraisal, or (4) when sold/never. And then should rentals be recalculated differently from your own residence?

Obviously it's all for internal record keeping and makes no difference in reality, as the only time any gains are realized is when the property is sold.

I've wondered about that sometimes too. We'll probably never sell the rental, or if we do it'll be when we're too old to mess with it anymore. On the other hand a huge part of many rich individual's NW is equity in their business or real estate, in which case gains also aren't realized until sold. If I were to buy investment real estate worth a significant sum I'd definitely want it help bump up my NW. Although I would also include a primary home's value in my calculations, I believe that's where the real NW inflation happens. It's easy to sell a rental tomorrow and cash out forever, not the same for a primary home. Of course if you choose to downsize your primary home upon the sale then that changes things a bit.

I think I'm going to stick with a monthly check of the Realtor.com estimate as my baseline in the future. While not perfect, those numbers are pretty close to what comparable properties in the area are selling for.

*I know this is controversial, but I choose to include our vehicle values in our NW as well. I figure I might as well include anything I can liquidate worth more than a couple grand.

Considering this includes my super (Australian 401k) compulsory increase and the market going up, it's quite bad. Will make more efforts this month.

3/15/18 - 20,267.70
5/17/18 - 19,930.00
8/31/18 - 25,908.00

1/31/19 - 34,776.00
3/13/19 - 36,967.00
4/5/19 - 39,465.00

Almost crossed that 40k threshold. I'll hover around that while I'm paying taxes, but things should pick up pretty quickly, especially now that I am contributing 20% to the 401k.

I broke over $10,000 on 9/9/2018. I'm up to $25k as of 2/17/2019.
I'm increasing my NW by about 2k a month based on those figures and would hit 100k in about 37 months putting it out to about March 2022. I believe with an upcoming raise, bonus, and other small windfalls that come and go, I'm looking at a goal of December 31st 2021 to hit 100k. Current salary is 49k.

3/20/19: $26,600. Lots of changes: Trip to Chicago complete. Bonus received. Salary bumped to over 50k!!!! We're moving to a townhouse from an apartment. This will affect my savings rate slightly, but we will remain resident property managers and continue to receive a discount on rent. Overall the changes are positive.

Now to await the final March paycheck and get back into the groove of things in the new place.

So I've paid rent for the first time at the new townhome. First utility bills are showing up. We bought a few more household items to round out each room's décor and furniture needs. After paying my car insurance (6 months worth) and a few other small outstanding bills, I should be at $26,500. So essentially this past paycheck went out the door and then some, but moving forward there are fewer expected expenses coming up at least in the near term. If all goes well i'll be at $30k by Mid May.

The market giveth! I did have a little setback, my bike was stolen. In retaliation I bought a white bike with black decoration on the side and a neon green crate on the front rack. Try getting away with that one, ya filthy thieves... It's recognizable AF. Anyway, only 210 euro (230 dollars?) and it rides a treat. Also love front crates... dump everything in & go!

Sooooo, close. Would be a few thousand over 100k but we have to get a new roof. Thank God for MMM and you guys. We would be struggling to pay for that if I didn't find this site. Our networth has doubled in roughly 6 or 7 months. Thanks guys. I am really grateful for the knowledge and encouragement.
Edit to add: We probably will hit a slower save amount in the next month or two because of less overtime being given out at my job, but I will strive to get it as much as I can to keep building our networth up.

Dec-2016: $32,870.70
Dec-2017: $58,271.55   (+ 25,400.85)
Dec-2018: $72,493.16   (+ 14,221.61)

Jan-2019:   $ 81,866.77  (+ 9,373.61)
Feb-2019:   $87,222.31  (+ 5,355.54)

Mar-2019:   $88,865.95 (+ 1,643.64)

Pretty boring month, contribution-wise.  I put over $1K into my 401k, about $230 into my HSA, the rest of it is growth.  I'm having issues with my medical payment plan: The Corporation screwed up it in January and is still being very unhelpful and increasingly passive aggressive when I call them to figure it out.  After cordially hanging up after a 33 minute phone call where *I* had to explain to the rep how $17.98 got overpaid to something not even in the agreed payment plan (she still seemed to think I'm just trying to get out of paying), I wrote a 3-page letter of the history of the issue starting in December, with my growing displeasure of dealing with them over the phone (no one seems to know what they are doing, and no one seems to know what they are talking about except me, and it's making the confusion even greater).  Big sigh.  I'm reluctant to pay it off in full because it's 0% interest, but I'm wondering if it's worth it.  (Yes, I could pay off the remaining $1,600 immediately without any issue whatsoever, but I chose the 0% plan to shove cash into investments instead.  I'd have to pull from cash reserves, no biggie.).

April is also looking boring, same ol' 401k and HSA contributions + assumed growth.  If I pay the above off, I might just come out even.  That...doesn't sound too bad at this point.  I might just do that.  Save myself a few premature gray hairs. ;)

Hi everyone. I spent 24 months in the Race to Positive Net Worth thread and 2 months in Saving to $10K. Happy to join everyone here now! I'm really starting to feel the momentum as things have started to turn positive for me, and can't wait to graduate from this thread too.

Mar 2019 $14,000

Congrats on your previous progress and welcome to the thread @Optimiser !

Our March numbers are in here's the update for April:

2014 Jan: (129,703.05)
2015 Jan: (115,355.51)
2016 Jan: (82,545.00)
2017 Jan: 2,693.77
2018 Jan: 48,429.84

2019
January: 79,517.63
February: 87,532.51
March: 91,151.25
...
2019 Jul: 100,000 (GOAL)

In the homestretch!  Barring a big sell off in the market the arbitrary goal of July should be easily hit.  I also updated the spreadsheet.

Hi All! I just finished the race to $10K so I'm jumping in here :) I've been anxiously awaiting my time to join this thread.

Starting post
3/31/2017 (52,848.85) - Found MMM
3/31/2018 $(14,916.69) - 1 year in
3/31/20919 $9,917.20 - 2 years in
4/10/2019 $10,440.08

According to my current calculations I will spend about 2 years in this race, though I think it could be faster once momentum from all my little employees picks up. I'm already starting to see this.

Those are some remarkable jumps, are you in sales where a lot of your earnings are variable?

No, not in sales.

Those jumps reflect a huge change in thinking (finding MMM mostly) and a very large annual bonus.

I'm well paid monthly so I always had the money--I was just spending it.
My behavior changes really snowballed.  Cancelling all of my monthly subscriptions to Birchbox, stitch fix etc.  Sending venmo requests for dinner tabs instead of just ignoring the $100 each person owed.  Taking money when ppl offered to pay for gas & tolls.

I posted a case study here in Sept 2017 and it was immensely helpful.

Sold a house.

Good to see you, @haypug16 ! You smashed the 10k challenge and I'm sure you'll be rocketing through here as well :)

March 14, 2019: 91,383.01
March 22, 2019: 96,571.66

April 12, 2019: 99,627.63 !!!

OMG y'all, my bills are paid for April so my next paycheck should do it.

I won't stay in the six figures once I get the medical bills (I do have to argue about one of them, ugh, I hate sh*t like that) and final invoices for the wedding. BUT STILL.

October 7, 2018 = $600
October 18, 2018 = $2500
November 1, 2018 = $5,995
November 15, 2018 = $9,273
November 29, 2018 = $11,340
December 13, 2018 = $13,155
December 25, 2018 = $15,396
January 26, 2019 = $78,191 (Added our 401Ks into the mix)
February 9, 2019 = $80,723.72
February 14, 2019 = $81,500.07
February 22, 2019 = $84,426.22
March 8, 2019 = 91581.06
March 24, 2019 = 96640.33
April 6, 2019 = 99886.50
April 13, 2019 = 100,325.68

Is this even real? We went from $54,000 in our 401ks that we had been contributing for 15 plus years in October to almost doubling our savings/investments in roughly a 6 month period. Unreal! I would have never thought it would be possible. You guys are the best! Seriously, the advice all of you give is above the highest economists in the world's advice, and you give it all away for free! Thanks again, ya'll. See you in the next thread.

Mid-April Update
3/31/2017 - (52,848.85) - Found MMM
3/31/2018 - $(14,916.69) - 1 year in
3/31/20919 - $9,917.20 - 2 years in
4/10/2019 - $10,440.08 - Joined 10k-100k race
4/15/2019 - $19,105.19 - $9,187.99 increase from 3/31/19

Big increase mostly due to the $6k bonus I got today :) but even without that about $3k is just from saving/paying down debt. I'll be going on maternity leave any moment now so I imagine the next 3 months will be a little slower in the gains but should still have upward momentum.

April 19, 2019: 100,517.92

I'm not declaring myself a graduate because this won't last. I have about $4,500 to pay for the wedding and will still spend money on our honeymoon. Plus whatever down payment on a house.

Good news on the medical front, though! Unless some new charges pop up on my account (always a possibility with the US healthcare system...), I will only need to pay another ~$900 out of pocket for my medical procedure, not the like, $4,000 I was afraid of. The state retirement system is also down for maintenance, so I couldn't update all of my accounts--I usually do those about every month and a half and the market's been up, so I would probably be getting a boost from those.

So: a provisional Friday win!

And yeah, same here. My salary trajectory started out at $20k in 2010. I've been very privileged in a lot of ways (parents paid for college so no loans, ~$30k inheritance from grandmother's estate, grew up with frugality + financial literacy, have been state employee with good benefits for majority of my career). But I have also worked hard as hell and said no to a lot of things I'd have liked to say yes to.
