Currently looking to build up a 3-6 month emergency fund and then kill the remaining debt.

You should be able to refinance that student loan debt in the meantime and save anywhere from 3-4%. When I did mine I searched around Earnest seemed like the best. If you decide to do it and go with them, I can provide a referral code for a free $200 for ya.

I'm jumping into this, because I was going to join the save to 10,000 thread, but then realized I actually already had $10,000 in my retirement.

I'm still not sure of everything, so there might be mistakes. I'm going to focus on building investments first, before paying off my debts, because they are all less than 5% over the treasury rate. After I get an emergency fund established, I intend to max out my DCP 547 plan, then max out my 403b plan, and then tackle my school loans (higher interest than the mortgage), then tackle my mortgage, then start investing in Vangaurd or something. That last part is a ways down the road, which is why it's vague.

Hello everyone! It is my first time posting in this thread, I just made by way over from the race to $10k thread which I just surpassed.

Here is a basic breakdown of the numbers as of the end of the day today:

Total Cash/Cash Equivalents: $31,642
Total Liabilities: $20,131

Net Worth: $11,511

Virtually all of my liabilities are student loans. I also have some minor balances on my credit cards, which I pay off monthly. I've been aggressively attacking the student loans (see my participation in the student loan challenge if curious) and have made steady progress.

As for asset composition,  20% are in checking accounts, 13% is in my HSA and 67% is in my 401k.

I'm looking forward to following everyone's progress. Good luck to us all!

I am in! The goal is to get to 100k net worth by the end of 2018. Currently at ~21k. I have been pretty good at my goals so far. Starting out after college in Dec. 2013, I believe I had about a negative net worth of 65k. My first financial goal was to get a net worth of zero by the time I received my tax refund this year and I hit it at the end of January. My second goal was to have my private student loan (6.6%) paid off by the end of July. I made it at the end of June. Next I am hoping to have the car paid off by the end of the year. Currently have a 10k balance left on that loan.

My soft goal for the end of 2017 is 35k in net worth, only because I think I'll need it to be close to that to meet the 100k goal at the end of 2018. I have not done any hard calcs at this point, but in the mean time, I should be getting annual raises of approx. 5k beginning 11/1 for 2017 and 2018. I will also be maxing out my 401k in 2018 and hopefully the ROTH IRA as well.

So I am currently at ~30,900 net worth. I've been averaging about a 2k increase per month and I've got an extra paycheck coming in for December as there will be 3 pay periods. I should be between 37-38k net worth by the end of the year. I've got a raise coming effective 11/1, but I have not been communicated the amount yet.

I've cut almost 3k in annual expenses in the past few months. Moved to a nicer, more convenient, and cheaper apartment (farther away from city center, which I don't need anymore) that will save me $87 a month. In moving there and an acquisition by my firm, I will be driving approximately 10 miles round trip a day rather than 60. Rough estimates have that at about $100 a month in gas savings. My firm is also adding a HDHP plan, which I do not know the exact details yet, but I'm guessing this will be about 1/2 the cost of the low deductible plan (estimated savings of 50/month).

I have not ran the hard numbers yet as exact figures aren't determined, but my goal of 100k NW by the end of 2018 is going to come really close. I'd guess I'm looking at being more towards 10-15k short without any gains/raise coming next year/potential promotion. Here is a question for my fellow cohorts - I have about a 5k vested pension at my previous employer. I'm going to check to see if there is any way I can roll that over into a 401k/IRA this coming week. Either way, would you include that in your net worth calc? I'm younger so pensions are not a familiar topic for me. I've read being vested means that its guaranteed to me no matter what, but I've heard of plenty of people losing their pensions (albeit not knowing specific circumstances).

I'm working hard towards a promotion that would go into effect 11/1/18, which would hopefully net me about another 1k before 2018 YE. I also have multiple ways to get bonuses at work, albeit normally in smaller increments. I believe I already have close to 1k gross coming my way. Let's get it!

Well, I joined this race 3.5 years ago, but I have finally made it.  My partner and I went from a net worth of ~-8k to our current six figure net worth. 

We've come a long way.  In 2014 we earned a combined $52.5k and we had almost $24k in debt (student loans).  We paid off the student loans completely in April 2016, and last year we earned $84k (our average income in the last 4 years is $66k). 

I know we've been very slow in this race compared to many, but I'm super proud of what we've accomplished on such low income.  I'm hopeful that I'll finally finish my advanced degree program in 2018 and begin to earn a real salary, which should accelerate our progress a lot. 

Right now almost half of our net worth is in a savings account for a down payment on a house.  I might wait until we have $100k in invested assets before I join the next challenge.  Best of luck to all of you!

I was reading some of the other "Race from" threads and decided that although I don't count true NW it would be nice to look back and see it so I figured I would add it!  I am staying in this thread because the "Invested Total" is the column that I am tracking.

I know I really shouldn't be looking at the balances this often but as of this morning (who knows if it will last) the 401k is just above $95k.  Once the Dec contribution and any dividends are added (assuming this growth doesn't take a nose dive before the end of the year) we should be really close to graduating this race. I think Jan I am going to be really tempted to add enough to the IRA to get us over that $100k mark, must remind myself that savings should be left alone until after baby arrives.

Went to check my balance today so that I could do an end of the year/Jan 2018 post and the stupid site says they are temporarily down, grrrr!

Also found out that since our company was purchased we are moving to a different 401K provider and they will be automatically transferring our balances to the new provider.  The new provider is a large generally decent company but the current provider is largely preferred and I am whiny about the change.  Hopefully we will have options with similarly low  expenses ratios to choose from.

Looks like the new company started the transfer of our 401K on 12/30 so all that money is currently not playing in the market which is disappointing.  I am tempted to take what is in savings (~$3000) for DH's potential self employment taxes and put it into his IRA as I don't think we should owe anything above what has been paid in for 2017.  This would move us on to the next race, I don't currently count that savings as it has a clearly defined purpose, or I could do the practical thing and wait to make sure we don't have any tax liability 1st.  Waiting is not an area that I excel at.

I was reading some of the other "Race from" threads and decided that although I don't count true NW it would be nice to look back and see it so I figured I would add it!  I am staying in this thread because the "Invested Total" is the column that I am tracking.

Looks like the new company started the transfer of our 401K on 12/30 so all that money is currently not playing in the market which is disappointing.  I am tempted to take what is in savings (~$3000) for DH's potential self employment taxes and put it into his IRA as I don't think we should owe anything above what has been paid in for 2017.  This would move us on to the next race, I don't currently count that savings as it has a clearly defined purpose, or I could do the practical thing and wait to make sure we don't have any tax liability 1st.  Waiting is not an area that I excel at.

The 401k transfer finalized and the 1st contribution was made so half way through with Jan 2018 and we hit $100k in invested total!!! Other good news I accepted a job offer on Friday that includes a 37% raise and an increase in potential bonus % (although I won't that part until 2019). 

In the not so good news category the expense fees on the new 401k vs the old 401k are not making me happy.  I wonder what my options will be with the new job although I will not be able to contribute until I have been here for 30 days and that will be very close to when I take maternity leave.  It looks like this number will depend almost solely on the market for the next several months.

student loan payments cleared and my year end bonuses and employer contribution hit my 401k finally.  Sorry, no black magic for huge jumps like that.
