I only really track my 401k balance and only for the last couple years.

In my 20s I put something like 10% in and thought I was doing great (better than average), we also tackled 1 student loan, 2 car loans, credit card debt, and bought our 1st home (now a rental).  For the last several years I have only been putting 6% (plus a company match) into the 401k, while we saved for a wedding, down payment on a house, started a family, went to 1 steady income and 1 self employed income, and are continuing the last student loan.  We are still working on paying off my last student loan and building the self employed income but I am really hoping to hit $100k in the 401k sometime in 2018, if the self employed income starts taking off and we can contribute more to an IRA I will add that into the calculations too.

I did do a quick back of the envelope net worth calculation that included debt, primary and rental home value, and vehicle value and that put net worth around $150k, but since I don't regularly track that stuff I don't want to join the next group until the retirement accounts are above $100k.

                    401K          IRA          Total
Dec 2013:   $43,660     $0           $43,660
Dec 2014:   $52,943     $0           $52,943
Dec 2015:   $55,622     $0           $55,622
Dec 2016:   $68,870     $700       $69,570
 Feb 2017:   $74,784      $700       $75,484
   4/11/17:   $76,834     $1002      $77,836
 Apr 2017:   $78,946      $1026     $79,972
  5/24/17:    $80,007     $1040      $81,047
  6/05/17:    $82,048     $1057      $83,105
  7/21/17:    $84,508     $1075      $85,583
  8/02/17:    $85,737     $1075      $86,812
  9/01/17:    $86,830     $1079      $87,909
10/02/17:    $89,275     $1100      $90,375
11/03/17:    $91,994     $1124      $93,118

I had a goal of $90k in the 401k by the end of the year, I made it!!  There should be a pretty decent dividends increase in Dec, not sure if I will be able to hit $95k in the 401k alone before the end of the year but it seems pretty likely in the combination of the 401k and IRA.

It would be really cool to graduate from this before baby #2 comes in March!

October 2017: $55,138

November 2017: $57,080

Not a good month for me, just the minimums as all my spare cash and then some went to my dentist. Blah. Will be the same next month.

June '17 £3,841
July '17 £6,774 / $8,705
August '17 £8,916 / $11,597 !
September '17 £10,812
October '17 £14,169

In other news, we now have a lodger, only short term but will boost savings and provide company to Mrs T when I'm away with work.

Hi Everyone!

I just passed the 10k mark and I could use some motivation to keep going :)

About me: I'm 33 years old, have a stable but stressful job and discovered MMM this summer. By now I have reduced spending and increased savings, which was quite exciting. Now that I'm set up for the long wait, I'm looking around blinking in the bright mustachian light "...and now?". I'm not very patient ^^

No kids, no pets, and we're renting but we are looking to buy a house in the next year. So next year I will leave you guys for the x to 10K race I guess! Below my numbers, savings and investments only:

July 2017:            € 7.208 <--- Discovered MMM (and many other great bloggers!)
August 2017:        € 8.918
September 2017:  € 9.480
October 2017:     € 10.225
November 2017:  € 10.906/ $ 12.855

[edit: forgot to mention the currency and added conversion to dollars]

Wow, MEJG, congratulations on the huge leap forward!  Though it sounds like you had a death in your family, and I am sorry for your loss.  I've not gotten one, but these posthumous gifts from loved ones are huge.  They can push us forward years on the FIRE pathway, giving us the gift of time and peace of mind.

Thanks!
One death, and one very generous “pre-inheritance” structured in such a way as to wipe out all but $16,000 of my student loans.  It effectively frees up 800/month. And puts us squarely into the stache builing rather than debt paying territory.
It’s pretty amazing to look at the numbers! But also doesn’t change much day to day.  Five years ago my student loans being gone was so insurmountable and in creating a plan and following it now the steady climb was made inevitable (barring disaster of course). We’re deeply greatful for the gifts! It’s interesting how perspective has changed along this road.

Looking forward to MORE tax advantaged investments than debt repayment in 2019!

Hi everyone!  I'm so excited to be able to post in this thread after graduating from the race to $10k.  That said, I'm settling in here for the long haul because I know reaching $100k is going to take me a looonngggg time.  So I'll get a pot of coffee going and make myself at home.  Right now I'm still building up my emergency fund, while putting 10% into my 401k.  Hoping to have the e-fund done by the end of 2018, then start saving for a house while bumping up the 401k too.   I have a paid off car not included in my net worth (2012 Honda Civic that I hope to drive f-o-r-e-v-e-r), student loans are gone (paid in full in late 2016), and zero debt.  I'm 34 and feeling very behind at this adult thing, but I'm doing my best to catch up now.

My net worth finally crossed $100,000! Here's my progression according to Personal Capital:

January 1$45,372
March 1$65,063+$19,691(company bonus in February)
June 1$78,821+$13,758
August 1$76,010–$2,811(the end of an extremely spendy summer and some investment dips, I think)
October 1$92,860+$16,850(got a 20% raise in September)
December 1$104,856+$11,996

I saved $47,250 in total…so it looks like I might just be able to hit another gauntlet goal to save $50k in 2017.

I'm excited to move on to the next gauntlet thread!

April '17 £1,250
May '17 £2,515
June '17 £3,841
July '17 £6,774 / $8,705
August '17 £8,916 / $11,597 !
September '17 £10,812
October '17 £14,169
November '17 £16,320 / $21,449 !
I've decided to make some changes to my strategy after reading the 4 pot saving method http://the7circles.uk/savings-rate-four-pot-solution/
from 7 Circles (UK centric) which focuses on staggering your investments to fill gaps before you can access personal pension, company pension and state pension.

Now I'm putting much more into my pension and less into my ISA (accessible savings), this is much more tax efficient but also reduces my national insurance and student loan contributions. Salary sacrifice pension up by £1170 but take home pay only reduced by £600 :-)

This means I am now going to report my accessable (ISA) and pension pot (SIPP) here which will provide a boost to my numbers.

ISA £17,576 - $23,650
SIPP £29,162 -$39,242

Total £46,738 - $62,892

I'm in! I was waiting for the month end to get my numbers together. I'm in the UK so working towards £100k.

1 Dec 2017 - £16,900

Currently adding approximately £800 per month to the stash, I'm very jealous of everyone that can add thousands each month! My take home salary is quite low (~£20k/year), but I'm living rent free with family at the moment so living expenses are low too, meaning my savings rate is around 50% of my take home pay.

I'm not counting my pension in my networth as it is a superannuation scheme so too complicated to include, plus who knows what the UK retirement age will be for me, currently have to be 68 years old to claim!

No assets to include in that number (no house, car), so just cash/investments in index funds.

Ok I just depressed myself and worked out it will take about 8.5 years to get to 100k at my current rate of saving :(

mustache you a question

Interesting month...received an inheritance of a few thousand dollars that was put into savings and then our home value jumped another 5k according to the mortgage company.  Assets of 261,948 and liabilities of 178,163.

A question for all of you, how do you track your home value (if you include it in NW)?  The most accurate way I know how to is just to follow what the value is according to Quiken Loans, it's consistent but might not be the most accurate.  Does anyone have any advice there?

Don't feel too badly, I'm in about your same situation!  I can only save about $850/month too right now.  But your life (and my life!) won't be the same in 8.5 years.  I have hopes that we'll both be able to save more in the future!  100k will come sooner than we think.

I'm also in the lower end of the savings camp here! I'm creeping my savings up now but have had some super big medical bills lately so they've eaten in to the maxing of retirement funds I'd been doing. My goal is to just slowly inch up the % contribution from my paycheck to my 403b again until it hurts. Every % will help!

I'm categorizing my net worth differently than I was before, so I'm going to abandon what I posted before on this thread and now since joining, my numbers look thusly...

Oct 2017   $54,722.60
Nov 2017  $56,146.72 [+1424.12]
Dec 2017  $59,041.97 [+2895.25]

I keep reading that the first $100K is the hardest, the second goes faster. Here's hoping!

   Sep 1, 2017       $49,626.13
   Oct 1, 2017       $59,438.41
   Nov 1, 2017       $71,949.94
   Dec 1, 2017       $82,267.23     (+10,317)

A good month for gains, next month I will slide a ton of unpaid overtime into my account after I confirm business taxes so I should graduate on Dec 29 with a decent margin for lost gains.

Looks like I may be able to graduate next month! Fingers crossed!!

Yeah i agree, your average save per month is 3,338. I think you made it for new years. Congrats!

Thanks! I will be going on a vacation closer to new years. Hopefully it set me back too much.

I'm in! I was waiting for the month end to get my numbers together. I'm in the UK so working towards £100k.

1 Dec 2017 - £16,900

Currently adding approximately £800 per month to the stash, I'm very jealous of everyone that can add thousands each month!

Ok I just depressed myself and worked out it will take about 8.5 years to get to 100k at my current rate of saving :(

Don't feel too badly, I'm in about your same situation!  I can only save about $850/month too right now.  But your life (and my life!) won't be the same in 8.5 years.  I have hopes that we'll both be able to save more in the future!  100k will come sooner than we think.

I also can save about €850 in a good month, but I have to admit I'm pretty happy with that. Maybe because I'm a newbie :-)
More seriously though, since discovering MMM I have been trying to figure out what a typical Dutch family would save and how much in debt they are, just to get my bearings on where I stand. It's not easy to find the numbers but from what I read and hear from colleagues, we (SO and I) are doing extremely well. So yes, saving like crazy to obtain 100k includes a long wait but we are still So Much Better Off than most people. I truly feel privileged and I'm trying to figure out a way of giving some of my luck back to our community. If any of you has tips or ideas I would love to hear!

For all of the super-savers, but a bit more for the smaller-savers like us: You can do it! :-)

Good point, I know I am doing a lot better than my work colleagues that can barely make it payday to payday! I do feel lucky that I discovered MMM before I started earning big, because it will be easier to just avoid lifestyle inflation than it must be having to cut back if you have already had several years of spending all or most of a big salary.

I had a goal of $90k in the 401k by the end of the year, I made it!!  There should be a pretty decent dividends increase in Dec, not sure if I will be able to hit $95k in the 401k alone before the end of the year but it seems pretty likely in the combination of the 401k and IRA I might even hit $95k in the 401k alone before the end of year.  It would be really cool to graduate from this before baby #2 comes in March!

I was reading some of the other "Race from" threads and decided that although I don't count true NW it would be nice to look back and see it so I figured I would add it!  I am staying in this thread because the "Invested Total" is the column that I am tracking.

I'm crashing two threads and this will be my joint account. I like my personal one since it's easier to motivate myself then my wife, but it still nice seeing the change in combined NW/Investments which is what matters.

Low earnings and high spending (vacation) means I am way off my monthly target. But, it's just another bump along the road maan.

05/17 | £1020
06/17 | £470      (-£550 ~    -50%)
07/17 |  £1,590   (+£1120 ~ +340%)
08/17 |  £2,080   (+£490   ~ +30%)
09/17 |  £7,250   (+£5170 ~ +350%)
10/17 |£12,000   (+£4750 ~ +65%)
11/17 |£12,360 (+£360 ~ +3%)

Hello everyone! It is my first time posting in this thread, I just made by way over from the race to $10k thread which I just surpassed.

Here is a basic breakdown of the numbers as of the end of the day today:

Total Cash/Cash Equivalents: $31,642
Total Liabilities: $20,131

Net Worth: $11,511

Virtually all of my liabilities are student loans. I also have some minor balances on my credit cards, which I pay off monthly. I've been aggressively attacking the student loans (see my participation in the student loan challenge if curious) and have made steady progress.

As for asset composition,  20% are in checking accounts, 13% is in my HSA and 67% is in my 401k.

I'm looking forward to following everyone's progress. Good luck to us all!

Missed a month, but my net worth as of Nov 30th is $18,617.

Hi everyone!

I've been reading MMM and the forums for awhile, but have never posted. I've really enjoyed following everyone's progress on this thread and I'd like to join to keep me motivated and track my progress. I'll be tracking invested money, which for right now is in a 403b and Roth.
