I only really track my 401k balance (at end of month) and only for the last couple years.

In my 20s I put something like 10% in and thought I was doing great (better than average), we also tackled 1 student loan, 2 car loans, credit card debt, and bought our 1st home (now a rental).  For the last several years I have only been putting 6% (plus a company match) into the 401k, while we saved for a wedding, down payment on a house, started a family, went to 1 steady income and 1 self employed income, and are continuing the last student loan.  We are still working on paying off my last student loan and building the self employed income but I am really hoping to hit $100k in the 401k sometime in 2018, if the self employed income starts taking off and we can contribute more to an IRA I will add that into the calculations too.

Dec 2013: $43,660
Dec 2014: $52,943
Dec 2015: $55,622
Dec 2016: $68,870
Feb 2017: $74,784

I did do a quick back of the envelope net worth calculation that included debt, primary and rental home value, and vehicle value and that put net worth around $150k, but since I don't regularly track that stuff I don't want to join the next group until the retirement accounts are above $100k.

Seeing some of these monthly increases is very eye opening.  Some of you add more to your net worth every month than our entire monthly income!

We are still focusing on debt pay-off and will probably not add to the IRA again until tax time next year.  I did want to get it to a $ amount that it can actually be invested so we bumped it up to $1000.

                  401K        IRA        Total
Dec 2013: $43,660   $0         $43,660
Dec 2014: $52,943   $0         $52,943
Dec 2015: $55,622   $0         $55,622
Dec 2016: $68,870   $700     $69,570
Feb 2017: $74,784    $700     $75,484
 4/11/17: $76,834    $1002   $77,836

Hi everyone, first time posting. Just found MMM in the last 2 months. To cut costs the company I work for reduced salaries by 20% from April - August last year. As you can tell, I did not adjust my spending and my savings in 2016 suffered. They will be doing that again this year and I'm hoping posting here will help motivate me to really cut my spending during these reduced salary months! I also have the benefit this year of having discovered Mustachianism, so hopefully I will make some nice progress.

Welcome Unlikelycrotchgardener!  That is quite a username.  Afraid to ask if there's a story there.

You've made some great progress since the beginning of '15.  Way to hang in there when the income took a hit.

Hi folks, I'm new to the boards, though I've been lurking for a month or so, and thought I'd jump into this thread (I'll go introduce myself in the welcome thread, too). Nice to meet y'all!

I've only started tracking my net worth this year, so:

January 2017:  $54,765.72
February 2017: $58,616.88
March 2017:     $62,304.54

I've been digging myself out of CC and other consumer debt for the past few years, and will be completely out from under the credit cards by the fall equinox - and then I anticipate seeing these numbers really take off.

April 2017: $63,589.66

Small progress, but progress nonetheless.

I'd like to jump in this.  Totals are for my wife and I.  Aggressively paying down student loan debt has helped...

Jan 2017 - 9,926
Feb 2017 - 15,869
March 2017 - 21,618
April 2017 - 22,738

I'm going to try to track my NW monthly this year to chart my progress. Starting 2016, I had a NW of $50,000. I'm hoping to grow it to over $75K.
Once I get to $100K, I think I will give myself permission to move into my own apartment, as I've spent the last 8 years living with the same roommate--saving a ton of money, but not getting as much privacy as I'd like.

Jan 2016 - $50,000
April 2016 -$57,000
May 2016 - $60,000
June 2016 - $63,000
July 2016 - $69,000 (profit sharing, plus market doing better - so glad I front loaded this year!)
Aug 2016 - $72,000
Sept 2016 - $74,000 (markets down, same deposits though)
Oct 2016 - $74,000 (uggghhh...)
Nov 2016 - $78,000 :D
Dec 2016 - $84,000 (Wooooo! Dale tu cuerpo a alregria, Macarena...!)

Jan 2017 - $87,000 (so far two paychecks front-loaded to 401K at 80%)

Crossed $90K just now, yay!

$95,500 as of today. Still hoping to graduate this level by June, with any luck.

January 2017: (10,116.43) - artificially low by about $5,000 due to missing Mint account
February 2017: 12,032.52 - bonus plus tax return (married in late 2016 but had been withholding as single for most of the year) plus adding some accounts to Mint
March 2017: 15,032.52
April 2017: 20,214.77

Let's go!

Thanks, Trifele...i think ;)

law school loans + wife's grad school (education) loans started us $195K ish behind the 8-ball in 2011.  A couple cross-country moves and job changes have forced us to pause above required debt payoff/retirement account funding at times, but we are settled now and ready to crush debt/stash hardcore.  We are shooting for debt principle payoff and stashing of at least $5,600 a month from here on (written down and published to the world for accountability).

I posted in the 100K to 250K race since I was almost 100K at the time.  That was end-March.

But I skidded down to 99K as of today and looks going dimmer by midnight's balance refresh.

So joining this race instead as the market sorts things out for awhile.

Current Balance : $99K

It was about the same for us -- one law school + one grad school = ~$140k in the hole to start.  Plus I started off in public interest law making almost nothing.   You will get there, faster than you think.

Hi Gardo.  Someone over in the 'Race to 10k' thread was asking about you, wondering how things were going.  And the answer is -- you are kicking ASS!!!   Guess you graduated and slipped out of there without much fanfare.  And here you are ready to move on.  Well done!

What numbers are you all posting in this thread? I've been thinking about joining one of these threads, but not sure which one...

My networth is $103k, so just over the limit.
But my retirement assets are only $72k, safely within the limits.
And I just reached my emergency fund goal of $10k. But not too long ago, it was below $10k, and I guess too low for this thread.

Anyway, what number are you all posting?

I am going off my total NW, which I'm sure most here are. I'm at about $80K invested, but over $95K total NW.

First post, I really like the concept of solidifying this and don't have much encouragement on the FI/RE side from the DW or friends yet.

Seeing as I'll almost be at 10K next friday I figured I'd avoid the single post in the sub 10K thread.

2016-10-01    $51,413
2016-11-01   -$25,621*

2017-03-01   -$21,759
2017-04-01   -$15,838 [Quit Job - Started Consulting Business]
2017-05-01    $7,477

*I foolishly bought a condo (at least it's walkable to work) before getting serious about FIRE and don't count it in my net worth calculation (as hard as that is to watch the 75K hit - it is real).

Student Debts are at 2.7% so min payments only, and my house is at 2.19% (Canada) so it's all Questrade ETF investing from here, budget alots for $2122 biweekly (to hold myself accountable).

Condo has value, so you should include it unless you're just doing invested assets. I'd say either include both (mortgage and condo value) no exclude both.

I was just doing invested amounts over debts, as that's my liquid net worth. Condo is worth 509K and the mortgage is at 403K, with other assets being debt free (motorcycle / truck) but also not included. Figured a case study is in order in due time to deal with all of that..

You've got some nice monthly progress going there Jeeebus.  You're in the phase where if you "set it and forget it", and then increase the savings where/when you can, you will be there before you know it!

edit- any plans to make sure you hit that 100 this month? As I get closer, I'm trying to figure out even more ways to speed it up.

We'll hit 100k next month unless the market completely craps out or some emergency happens. It's not a rush, though. 3 years ain't too shabby. You'll do it in about half that time.

I've decided to use a whole new metric. Instead of net worth, I'm just going to track what's in my retirement accounts (not my husband's and not my pension). Our mortgage is less per month than rent would be, and the money in our accounts is for specific things like car repair, home repair, and emergencies, so it is there to be eventually spent. It's the retirement accounts that we're going to have to live off of, so that's what matters. Also, in this political climate, I'm not sure my pension will make it to retirement with me.

That puts me at 81,000.
