I'm in, AND I made a SPREADSHEET!!!

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1aBcGP8d7UD2oJif5IMSY9xmi8sIcRWKYRUswL1FE-ZM/edit?usp=sharing

I'm a nerd, and I love making spreadsheets. Please update your own info! For people who have already commented, I added you already. Please feel free to change your own info. Percentages will automatically count themselves. There's a few lines for people who want to add themselves.

Isaac, maybe add this link in the top post? :)

Ipep,

Nice spreadsheet!

Might I suggest that the total percent change be calculate by the change from last Monty's total instead of a sum of everyone's percent change. Just a suggestion. Still, job well done and thanks!

Aaand I was trying to figure out what to put there! I agree, it wasn't very useful before. Now it's the change in the monthly total, and the average underneath remains the average!

I'm getting excited for the end of the month, when I get to recalculate my net worth.  Been watching my index funds go insane each month this year, in line to make 20%.  Everything else is going fine, with my new diet our food budget has been lasting, and if we continue this pace we'll be spending less than $200 a month for 2 people.  Just another week then I can post my changes.

Same here! I'm looking forward to calculating my update, as well as seeing everyone else's progress! Although It's looking like my number will be lower than last month, due to a specific electric car company stock prices falling... :P

I'm in!  Started this year with:

5k in savings
5500 in IRA
1000 in SEP IRA
-10k  credit card debt (0%, will pay off by October)
11k (work truck).  Can't  call it a clown car, I'm a carpenter and need it.  Money maker.

Roughly 12500k net worth...

As of now:

16,000k in savings
-8500 credit car debt.
5500 IRA
1000 Sep IRA
11k (work truck)

Roughly 25k NW.

Putting 1500 away per month and not breaking a sweat.  Time to up it...

Really like this thread!

Haha no need to worry about winning the race, even though I am always a supporter of the good of competition, this is actually one race where we all win, and if you can get to $0.00 net worth by next year you will probably beat me to 100k haha darn military pay. Cheers everyone!

I will be worth nothing, and it will feel wonderful!!!
Indeed, I am very excited to be worth nothing, hopefully around the new year, give or take, depending on where my new job places me on the salary scale for fall (I just finished all my paperwork, so now waiting to hear).

In the mean time I'm going to be a little farther from $0 in the bad direction going into August, though not as far as I'd originally thought, thanks to some extra income this month. Y'all don't hate when I drag the collective % change down a little the next couple of months. I'll make up for it after that!

If you're in the negative, I feel ya. I was preceded by a minus sign just months ago. -$30k less than a year ago. Put this thread out of your mind by the 2nd of each month, and the time will fly by! We're all making great progress!

Thanks!

It messes up the average % calculation to have empty cells, so yeah - copy/paste is the way to go (If anyone knows how to change this... I'm not a master of spreadsheets, so let me know or feel free to change it!).

I'll keep an eye on things once the 31st hits, but I'm in Asia so might be sleeping while most of the action is happening :)

Tada. It's been updated. Now it will automagically populate the % change cell with a "" if there is no number in the adjacent cell to the left. Also, once you enter in a number, the % will appear correctly.

Thanks!

I'm thinking of adding a "ranks" column, so as the months go by we can have "previous rank" and "current rank" and see how the standings change... opinions?

My % savings rate has not been that high. A lot of what I do have was wisely socked away while working before grad school, awhile ago. But we'll see :)

I was thinking when you first said "ranks" that it would be on the size of our stash.  It would be interesting perhaps to suggest a few names on our way towards our first $100,000.

<$0 New pack of razors
$0 Putting down the razor
$1-$10,000 Peach Fuzz
$10,000-$25,000 5 o'clock shadow
$25,000-$50,000 Second day no shave
$50,000-$99,999 Pencil stash
$100,000+ Handle Bars

Or something like that.  I'm sure someone else could come up with better ranks.  Then we graduate to the race to $1 million thread :-D

Hah, yeah if that's too demoralizing, we can change it. Don't want to put anyone down! We're here for motivation and encouragement, not chastisement.

I wouldn't mind keeping an eye on things.

Spreadsheets are simply amazing things. Only reason I know how to do various things is by having a need/want for a spreadsheet, and then looking through the function list while using my imagination. If someone knows a better way of doing what I've done, please let me know. I'm all for learning more efficient way of spreadsheeting.

I've joined in, this challenge looks like a really good motivator. I don't think i'll be able to add more than $15K per year, but it'll be great watching it grow.

I just hope I haven't messed up the spreadsheet!

I know Mint uses Zillow to calculate home value, and I suspect it grossly overestimates, but for consistency sake, I just go with it.

My goal for 2014 for Net Worth was a whopping -$37K. My stretch goal was -$30K. I might make it!

My experience so far is that it underestimated, but this is my anecdotal evidence of 1 house purchase.  Our house was listed on Zillow at $216k, we paid $219k, but the appraisal came in at $225k.  It has now gone up to $223k.  YMMV

Updated my progress for July 31st. It was a pretty good month, and my increase was a whopping 49%. Helps to be starting pretty low, though! Broke through 5k, though so that's something!

My percent increase didn't calculate itself, I looked at the formula but couldn't figure out why…anyone else know why?

Also, bad end of the month for my stocks :/ At least they're on sale for my next purchases, right?

Yes! I would like to be in as well! I only included the money I have in investments, since pensions are very different here and I will use the cash I have for a deposit on a house soon. It's also depending a bit on the usd/euro currency, since I save in Euro's.

Wishing you all good luck!

I adjusted mine a little bit to report more accurately my Net Worth on the last day of the month rather than updating on the first of the month.  June is now $48,054.09, and July is $48,615.09.  There are two main reasons for such a paltry increase, 1) In-laws in Taiwan ordered around $800 of stuff so that is sitting as a debt, but I don't have an off-category for them, it will slowly fix itself overtime or the next time we visit. 2) Stocks went on sale the last two days of the month resulting in a small loss.

Stocks falling at the end of the month give me a bitter-sweet feeling, it hurts my net worth count, but it also means I can buy more shares on the 1st than I would have been able to!

I also forgot some shares I've got, which are worth roughly $3000 (they were a gift and not something I'd ever have invested in).  So my funds are going to take a slightly misleading jump again this month.  Yay for finding the spare change down the back of the couch though!

Is it too late to join in?

It looks like anyone with a mortgage is including the value of their home in the networth calculation? I don't typically do that (because the big negative numbers motivate me more), but for purposes of comparison I'll do that here with my numbers.

Also, it's my numbers joint with my husband because it's just easier to track for us.

Liabilities:
(Mortgage, remaining car loan): $215,289.72

Assets:
(Home value (estimated at about 20k less than what Zillow lists), IRAs, 401Ks, Index Funds, bank accounts): $264,334.2

Net Worth: $49,044.48

This doesn't feel like an accurate number to me, because I owe so much on my house still and I can't use retirement accounts to pay the mortgage payments. Does it throw off your numbers if i use my networth without including my home value? It seems more realistic to me.
(It would also make me last, with -150,000~)

Well, my NW also took a temporary hit due to the markets dropping just for the last day of the month. Annoying.

My IRA contribution increase goes into effect this month, so hopefully I'll start climbing faster.

Lord Cashmoney reporting with official tallies for August! Here were the new results compared side-by-side with July numbers which will be in this nice blue.

Official Beginning-of-August Number:   July
$-16,657.94   $-23,237.77

(Liabilities)
Student Loan Debts: $-34,190.76   $-34,623.03
Credit Cards: $-8,012.43   $-11,335.51

(Assets)
Cash: $6255.71   $7,791.68
Investments: $19,289.54    $11,929.09

A pretty good month, if I do say so myself! Credit card debt is down by $3,323.08, and student debt by $432.27. Markets were also down though, and I'm currently biased towards Amazon.com stock by virtue of employment. Market reaction to Amazon's financials report wasn't kind. I did gain a significant $7,128.63 boost by remembering to count a "forgotten" investment this month though! Next month should see an equally large drop in credit card debt. I would be shocked it I can't have it fully taken care of by October's end. Maybe a better idea would be to redirect some of the non-401(k) investment money towards obliterating it completely by September.

Keep up the good work everyone! This is a truly amazing race!

Saw My NW drop off about $500, but I finally paid off the last credit card.  I'm now debt free and can only go up.  Feels weird :/

Awesome. It'll be nice when I get to the point that I only have to use the + to calculate NW.

Just found out that my wife has $10k in some sort of investment in her home country which yields about 5% a year, this is going to boost my number up for next month.

I'm curious as to why your net worth would drop by paying off a credit card?  Credit cards are liabilities that should already be calculated into your net worth.  Paying off the credit card would just be a transfer of assets and wouldn't affect your net worth.  I generally run between $500-$2,000 on my credit cards through a month and those are all factored into my net worth, this way I'm not robbing Peter to pay Paul.
