Race from 10 to 100k!!

I checked my ISA this morning. 

When the markets dropped earlier in the year I was 23% down on what I'd paid in.  Today I'm up 20% overall.  They're only modest amounts compared to some people on this forum, but none the less it's been a crazy year.

Same here. I'm not sure what the lowest low was exactly, it was somewhere in late March when several members of my family had Covid. But I opened thid account 1 Jan 2016 and I'm at +35% overall now. That's a steady 7% a year. I remember the morning after the Brexit referendum. I had only been investing for a few months and I was massively in the red and now that blip is literally invisble in the graph. Even the Covid dip will look tiny in a few years.

It's especially impressive when you consider the impact Brexit has had.  If it were a smooth, sensible transition, I wouldn't have been surprised.  But considering our government are making a pigs ear out of leaving the EU, I'd have expected European/British stocks to struggle.  I guess it shows that you can't predict the stock market in any scenario!

Honestly I think the markets are still assuming everything will be worked out at the eleventh hour. If it isn't, we'll be in trouble and I can't imagine the stock markets not reacting if a deal becomes unlikely.

I know a bit about the customs part of Brexit due to my job and I am pretty much 100% certain that a no-deal situation would be a mess. On our side, I know an additional 1000 customs officers were hired and trained, and we think that should be enough, but I've heard UK Customs are behind on schedule and a lot of companies on both sides of the Channel aren't prepared either. And there are only weeks to go. It's in everyone's best interest to figure something out as sensible adults, but I guess they need to do it in a way that makes everyone feel like they've won.

Monthly Update

My N/W increased by £2,450.86 to a new total of £39,073.12.  This is the second biggest monthly increase since I started tracking my N/W over 3 years ago.

Everything went well for my net worth this month.  The markets have gone mad and I was paid at pre-covid levels for the first time since March.  I think my target of hitting £40k by the end of the year is easily doable, however, there are a few hurdles.  My pay will go back down as we've gone back into lockdown in the UK.  I also think the stock market could face a correction soon.  I know it's counter-productive to try and time the market, but I don't think it's a great time to invest at the moment.

Do you have any debts that make sense to pay off? My student loan is €4000 @ 0% and mortgage €65000 @2,25% (conservative estimate of LTV = 70%) so it makes little sense to pay those off faster than necessary.

If I were in your position I personally wouldn't pay down either of the loans.  I'd probably spend the next couple of months bolstering your emergency fund.

Best case scenario is that you have a solid E/F, with cash available and the markets stagnate or drop.  Worst case is that you have a solid E/F and you miss out on further gains in the market.  But the stronger your emergency fund, the better placed you are to make risky decisions that could benefit more long term.

My S/O recently persuaded her boss to give her a 15% pay rise.  She'd have never had the balls to ask previously, but between us we have very strong E/Fs and we knew if everything went wrong we'd be able to support one of us being out of work for a very, very long time.  So her strong E/F has earnt ourselves more than a gain in the stock market would have.

Started a new job, got a pay raise + some extra benefits. All in all that means that even though I "only" got a raise of about 10%, after tax I make about €1000 more than I used to. One reason is that my new employer pays 75% of my pension contribution, instead of 1/3 at my previous job. (I don't include my future pension in this thread because that would make the calculation way too complicated).

I filled up my pre-tax for this year and found something to do with my new found wealth: I spent it! Not all of it of course. But I decided to add a pair of boots to my impressive shoe collection (2 pairs of pumps for work, brogues, hiking shoes and snow boots) now the weather is getting colder. I can't believe I used to walk around in heels all day every day, even in winter. I've worn them less than 10 times since Covid. I also got a smartphone stand for video calls and I still need to buy a new laptop. Plus we got fancy take-away food twice this month. All in all I'm becoming a real spendypants ;-) . I always delay purchases as long as possible, but this raise was a good excuse to finally bite the bullet on a few of them.

Sadly only about 500 € of the increase were due to savings, the rest was market gains and a large gain on the small crypto position which now suddenly is more than 10 % of my net worth. I made a purchase that I had been delaying for months and this somehow lead to a whole spending spree. At least most of the christmas spending is done now. Decided to give myself a monthly allowance that I can save up seperate to the fire stash for any non-essential wants, so that I don't feel like I'm depriving myself and end up splurging.

What a crazy good month (or year really), although I can take basically no credit for it, at least not based on my actions in the last 30 days. My investment accounts were up about $9,000 and my home equity is up about $20,000 (I use the average of Zillow & Redfin). Normally I'd take the home equity increase with a big grain of salt, but my house is actually under contract right now for $12,000 more than what I'm using here. So I guess I'm on to the next thread. I can't believe that I was at $34,500 one year ago!

Total savings rate for 2020 at 31% up from 22% last year.
Portfolio return also well above 10% which I am very happy about all things considering.

Very happy about the results, but I know I can do better.
Some unfortunate expenses there (1k on camping gear which we didn't use because the camping site was submerged in water, causing us to spend another 1k on accommodation).
We've also spent about 2k on DIY renovating our condo which will hopefully reflect when we try to sell it in a few years. For 2021 we're planning to re-do the kitchen. Currently also looking at about 2k for that.

Goal for 2021 is to definitely get us up to $80,000, which hopefully will prove to be a conservative estimate.

Received a €5k windfall, not totally unexpected but still rather shocking to see this push me over the finish line! Since I've done nothing to deserve this kind of luck, I've started donating a little something to a charity of my choice per month. Currently, I'm feeling very strange: happy, grateful but also a little bit like I've been running a marathon and within 5k from the finish line, some guy tells me to stop because I've already won. Well, onward and upward- and should the market crash once more in the coming months, I'll be back in this warm nest in no-time.

When I joined this thread in mid-2019, fresh out of the 50k savings one, I honestly thought I'd never make it out of here.

Good progress for November, but that is most likely going to slow down as I've had to resign from my job earlier in the month.  Luckily my side gig provides enough to cover the bills, and I'll try to grow it but won't be able to put quite as much aside as before.  But that is why we save aggressively for times like these and I look forward to getting this back on track.

Most of the increase is market gains - I think I've contributed about $4000 since October 17 spread over 401k and brokerage. I try not to check these things too often. :-)

I spent more this month than any month that did not include international travel expenses. Most of this was expected spending, but my groceries have been creeping up for a while, which I'd like to address.

How are you doing with your groceries spending? I'm also curious what specifically you changed to reduce them.

Thank you! We had some cash tied up from when I was job hunting, so that certainly helped when I could dump some in the market. It was bizarre starting to invest more heavily right as the markets went skyward at the end of the year.

I do not include my savings to buy expensive "fun items" like new cellphone, electronics etc. as it is not very big. My checking account is also not included as it has money I will likely spend this month. Goal for 2020 is to make it to $75K.

I felt like all I did was spend money the past month, so pretty surprised there is any increase at all. I picked up a side job, so I'm excited to start making bigger saving progress every month!

I broke over $10,000 on 9/9/2018. I'm up to $25k as of 2/17/2019.

All said, I'm increasing my NW by about 2k a month based on those figures and would hit 100k in about 37 months putting it out to about March 2022. I believe with an upcoming raise, bonus, and other small windfalls that come and go, I'm looking at a goal of December 31st 2021 to hit 100k. Current salary is 49k.

This is a portion of my first post into this thread, and surprisingly my goal is still on track fairly accurately as of now. Lots of things have changed, but the NW is about 62,000 so doing good!

i noticed some EUR and GBP being thrown around. Are you guys racing to 100k in your local currency or converting to USD like i do?

I'm going for 100k in €. That's a bit more than 100k $ at this point, but if I would convert the amounts to $ every month, my progress would be linked to the exchange rate.
