Peach fuzz challenge to self: lift weights and bike somewhere
« on: October 19, 2016, 07:55:28 AM »
Posting here for public accountability.

This week I will lift weights (already got them downstairs in the den) and bike to work (I am a writer and self-employed, but I take my laptop to a coffee shop early in the morning before my family is up).

I'm feeling a bit too candypants lately. I bike regularly but for fun, not utility, and am tired of my own excuses regarding safety. It is ridiculous to fire up my 15-passenger van for a destination a mile away!

And I am at my ideal weight but need to firm up and need more energy. My workout/biking buddy is my 15 year old son, so I will be letting him down too if I fail.

Will come back tomorrow and update. :-)

Good news, bad news.

The bad news is, even though I rode my bike two days ago, when I went to get on it I discovered it had a very flat tire. My biking enthusiast son who keeps the bikes in good repair was happily sleeping (it was 5:45 AM). I don't know how to patch it or where he keeps the pump, so...

FAIL. Today he's going to fix my tire, so THIS WEEK I WILL bike to work! (Note to self: procure backpack for laptop)

WIN:
I lifted weights yesterday! I could only squat 75 pounds, mostly because I don't have anyone to spot me who can lift more than that, my husband wasn't home. My workout buddy was my teenage son, and we've agreed to lift Monday/Wednesday/Friday. I was a bit weak and shaky all day after my workout and am sore today, so I take that as evidence that I done good.

Will update once bike is fixed.

Get the bike enthusiast to show you how to change the bike tube and where the pump is kept!

I've biked for many years - never knew how to handle a flat. I work w/ a adaptive cycling program as a volunteer and recently the mechanic was more than happy to teach me to change a flat. I suck at it - and it would likely take me 45 minutes to manage it. But, I can do it and now I'm not going to be stranded and crying over my useless flat-tired bike ever.

Good for getting to the weights!

Well I did it! Yesterday I biked to WalMart to get a few groceries. Bonus points because it was COLD and windy and my teeth, ears and hands were throbbing when I got inside.

I also lifted weights 3 times last week. It hurts to walk and when a kid crawls in my lap, I wince, but ... pain is weakness leaving the body right?

The universe began testing me right away because this morning my bike had ANOTHER flat. Turns out there is some rust that's puncturing it. My old cruiser is a rustbucket and needs some work, but I refuse to upgrade my bike until biking to an actual destination a well-ingrained habit.

My 15 year old Mustachian was with me, so also accomplished mother-son bonding and quality time.

That's fantastic! Make sure you're hydrated and getting enough protein to help with recovery and avoid overtraining.

I've kept this up. Yes I have noticed an increase in appetite (sheesh, I already eat every 3 hours!). I am especially enjoying the bike riding. It's helped that hubby's car died and he's been taking mine to work :-)
