Some of my favorite threads in this forum are the "networth race to" ones. So I decided to start one for anybody else interested in tracking passive income. I'm basically just tracking my dividend income, using my rolling 12 month total. I'll kick things off starting with my July rolling total.
Passive Income
Rolling 12 month total
July 2017. $472.21 $1815
July 2018 $605.44 $2848
I've increased my passive Income by over $1000 in the last year. I am aiming to complete this race in 3 years by July 2021, with a stretch goal of Dec 2020.
-
Fun challenge. I'm in!
12 month Passive income rolling total
July 2017 to 2018 = $1,852.44
Goal is to reach $10K by July 2023 stretch goal is July 2022

Welcome aboard @haypug16!!!
Do you have a strategy for increasing passive income? Or are you letting new investments build it over time?
The majority of my passive income is paid out quarterly, so that is where I expect my main increases to occur. My passive income streams are ESPP shares, registered investments (etfs enrolled in drip plans), "not so" HISA, and peer to peer lending.
I expect the main increases in my passive income to occur through new investments, increase in ESP div payout, enrolling in drip plans for all my investments, and eventually finding a better interest HISA.
-
Ooh... this should be fun. Right now I'm at about $1500/year, so I've got a ways to go!
-
We're at ~$8,700 now. So nearing the end of this race. I'm assuming we'll be there within a year.
-
Welcome @Mezzie and @RWD. Great to have people at different stages of the race.

Yes my plan is basically to have my new investments generate more and more passive income. Each month I've been setting aside more and more money to go into my 401K and then when I get to max out level (end of this year or Jan 2019) I'll be going to a Roth IRA, and then finding other investment options.

August update
Rolling 12 months
July 2017 - 1815
July 2018 - 2848
Aug 2018 - 2877 ($29 increase)
Small increase in passive income as expected. No major actions taken to increase passive income this month. Now that I am back to work, hoping to start making greater contributions which should help with a bigger increase when quarterly dividends roll in.
-
12 month rolling total
July 2017 to 2018 = $1,852.44
August 2017 to 2018 = $2,332.03 +479.59 increase
I was a little surprised to see such a jump from July to August but I'll take it. I have been actively increasing my contributions every month for the past year so it does make sense that it would have gone up I just wasn't expecting close to $500 more. :) Curious to see what next month looks like

Very nice increase, great job 👍

Maybe I'm stupid but how can I tell my dividends in 401k if I'm nearly 100% in Target fund type investments?
Also, why wouldn't we consider market gains on investments any less passive vs dividends?
-
I'm not here to rain on anyone's parade. But don't you think 10k/year in passive income really low? You can buy a few very affordable houses out of state, rent or owner finance them, and easily meet that goal - if not surpass it. My goal is to have 10k/month in passive income through real estate.

I would argue that real estate is not fully passive income, even with a manager... unless you are just a silent partner that gives money to another partner who chooses the properties.

Income from dividends/ interest appears automatically in your account.. many retirees try to create this for the bulk of their retirement income, only withdrawing capital gains as needed. So it is a pretty good stand alone target to practice on. Dividend income is also helpful for some tax situations but --I have found that trying to generate dividend income through investments is a bit more challenging, than just broad market ETFs. You should be able to get similar overall returns, but it is quite different when trying to build a portfolio that generates dividends.
Huh, I have not been focused on dividends except for my non-reg account that I started about 1 year ago... so this is the first time I calculated it... neat suggestion.

We have a race to positive net worth, no the bar is not low. It's likely just the first goal before a new goal.

I guess it all depends on where you are on your path to FI. For myself, and many other members of this forum, this goal is still a few years out. When I reach about 40k passive income I have reached financial independence. Hence, this is just a goal to hit along the FI journey.

If you don't have $10K/year in passive income then no it's not low. This is a goal for people to reach for not the end game. My end game would be closer to $25K but someone started a $10K race so here we are. Also, I'm not about to just go out and buy a few houses!

Anyone using MINT want to share how you would figure this out? I'm not seeing an easy way to capture it.
-
I don't use MINT but I just went to my 401K plan and ran a report for the past 12 months and it broke it down really nicely between contributions, dividends, and market change. I guess if you have a lot of different places for your investments it would be more difficult. Hope that helps :/

You nailed it, I have a lot of different accounts. :P I'll check out Fidelity and see what I can find there for the majority of it. THANKS!

I am using a target fund so I don't know that the dividends show up individually.

I'd like to join.
Currently at $939 rolling 12 months :-) so long way to go. Also, I don't see a lot of additional money for investing in shares at the moment, it will rather be moving from shares to other shares (with higher dividend ratio as this is part of my plan).
But I will be on the lookout ofr 'new money' for this as well.
Fun challenge nonetheless - appreciated!
-
What the heck I'll join. Though I am a little ahead of everyone, as I already track dividends at years end. So I'll just post the ending year + current months roll up.
2017-12-29 Dividends: 837.01 Other: 28.76 Total: 865.77
2018-09-12 Dividends: 878.36 Other: 4256.93* Total: 5135.29 (*1 time big check add that played catch up but source will be a continued source of income)
And now I am impressed, had a few other sources of passive income start to trickle in this year that I am only casually tracking, even if I were to exclude that 1 time check, I'd still be 4k extra so far this year. Neat.
As for tracking in Mint, it may or may not be possible to track dividends depending on the account(some of my accounts don't have anything other then totals), I see my dividends under "investment" and "Dividends and Cap". Just go to transactions for the account and it should be there. That being said, my transactions for investments are a mess so unless you've kept up, good luck.
-
@stimepy Yes, transactions were the only way I could get it to work in MINT. I had tried to do a tag so I could use the trends feature, but it would only work for income and not on my tax deferred accounts and that's where majority of my money is.
I decided it was something I wanted to calculate so I went through the effort to do it. Here are my numbers for 2017 and to date for 2018.
2017 $6193.02
2018 $5751.04
-
For those of you counting dividends in investment accounts do you count 401k and Roth dividends or just taxable accounts?
-

All accounts.
-
Merrill Edge has a screen just for dividends.
Does Betterment have a area that shows dividends?
Do you know if there are specific ETFs that invest in just dividend paying assets?
-

VIG (Vangaurd Dividend Appreciation)
SCHD (Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity)
I know there are hundreds of others out there but those are the two I have that focus on Dividends. Just make sure to do some due diligence as some of them (DNI for example) aren't worth your time.

Pre-Tax Post-Tax Total
Sep '17-'18 $122.36 $191.70 $314.06
I hope I'm not forgetting anything. It seems low, but that's without gains. That total seems pitiful..however I'm in the home stretch of paying off most debts and so my investments overall will start to have much larger monthly contributions. I anticipate these numbers rising on a much steeper slope once that ball gets rolling.
-
We're at ~$8,700 now.
$9,400 now
-
This is rad and made me look at our finances in a completely different way. Still waiting on some numbers to be able to document it, but following along.
-
Thanks for starting this thread and reminding us all that $10K passive income a year increased over time to $40K is the same as having 1 Mil in investments at a payout of 4% - right?:)
In the end - all roads lead to Rome:)
Not going to join since I'm only at a pitiful few hundred a year with no hope of reaching $10K, but it has served to remind me that it couldn't hurt to work on improving and working on a couple of neglected projects that could produce passive income - again.
Off to see if Mr. R. is anywhere near $10K - cool thread - it does open your mind, to see new possibilities:)
-
My passive income for 2018 so far has been $4041.83 so far this year, which isn't bad at all for this stage in my journey. It'll probably be a couple of years before I will reach $10000. Maybe a little less.

September update
Rolling 12 months
July 2017 - 1815
July 2018 - 2848
Aug 2018 - 2877
Sep 2018 - 2846
Moved backward this month as my quarterly dividends shifted from September to October. In saying that, I expect a decent increase in October.
-
12 month rolling total
July 2017 to 2018 = $1,852.44
August 2017 to 2018 = $2,332.03
September 2017 to 2018 = $1,909.53 - 422.50 Decrease
Looks like the Aug-Aug big increase was washed out in the Sept to Sept numbers. Still higher than Jul to Jul.
-
The great thing with this race is that despite the recent market turmoil, we should still see fairly steady progress. That is, as long as there is no dividend cuts, which I assume would take a much larger correction.
-
2017-12-29 Dividends: 837.01 Other: 28.76 Total: 865.77
2018-09-12 Dividends: 878.36 Other: 4256.93* Total: 5135.29 (*1 time big check add that played catch up ~1k )
2018-10-31 Dividends: 1377.42 Other 18477.32* Total: 19854.74 = Change of 14719.45 (*1 time big check add that played catch up ~1k)
Roll up is by month
Well, hmmm.... So got a rather large check from a source that is in on going. Not sure if it was a 1 time thing or not. But even so, kinda crazy to see that much passive income when only last year I was expecting to break the thousand dollar barrier this year.... Granted I expect to break that barrier by quite a bit, but not this much!
So I guess I am technically graduated? At least for now.
Good luck all!

October update

July 2018 - 2848
Aug 2018 - 2877
Sep 2018 - 2846
Oct 2018 - 2955 ($109 increase)
Happy with the increase this month. Still slow progress, but trending in the right direction. The next two months should be fairly flat, win the next good jump happening in December, when quarterly divs pay out. Added 10k to the market this month so optimistic for year end :).

A fun update; including what I recive in 4 days; I just went over $1 000 in rolling 12 months. I receive dividends almost only in SEK, but recalculate to $ with a (made up by me) fixed rate to be able to compare.

NOVEMBER UPDATE
Rolling 12 months
08/01/17 1815
08/01/18 2848
09/01/18 2877
10/01/18 2846
11/01/18 2955
12/01/18 2972 ($17 increase)
The progress has been slow, but the overall upward trend continues. I expect better increases in December and January as quarterly, semi annual, and annual divs roll in. Also, I have added lots of new money in the market the past 2 months, which should help as well.
Lately, I have been adjusting my portfolio so that the majority of my dividends get applied to drips. I am hoping that compounding begins to create tailwinds, as more shares are automatically bought each quarter.

Pre-Tax Post-Tax Total
Sep '17-'18 $122.36 $191.70 $314.06
Jan '18 - now $145.72 $179.13 $ 324.85
I lost where I saved my original chart so I'm just starting from January instead of November 2017. Despite leaving out Nov & Dec of 2017, I still have an increase from a few months ago..woohoo!
-
Love this idea. Also gives something positive to focus on in a volatile sideways market that is likely in the late innings of a bull:
Taxable accounts

2010: 160.93
2011: 179.86

i like your screen name hah, besides that i want to start investing in a taxable account using index funds from betterment or vanguard vtsmx. when does interest get added to the principle balance in the account? besides the earnings of dividends and such i can't figure out for the life of me how it compounds. if its added daily, monthly, yearly..
-
We're at ~$8,700 now.
$9,400 now
And 2018 comes in at $10,681!
-
Good challenge, but it will be a very long term goal for us. The only income we have that I count as truely passive is bank account interest, sales of stockphotos, and dividends from single stocks.
Total for 2018: $525.5

December saw a nice increase in my passive income (PI). The majority of this is from a fund that pays out an annual dividend every December. In 2018, my PI increased by slightly more then $1000. That's an extra $1000 my investments are gonna pay me every year for the rest of my life 😁.
Looking forward, in 2019 my goal is to increase my PI by $1500, for a yearly total of 5k. My main focus lately has been to not sit on too much cash and get my money in the market working as soon as possible. My quarterly dividends all ended up with a payout in January so hopefully I will see another nice increase this month.
We're at ~$8,700 now.
$9,400 now
And 2018 comes in at $10,681!
Congrats RWD, our first grad 🎓. If there is no other threads above this one then feel free to update us in the future.

Welcome gala,
Looks like you are at a great starting point to complete this race. As dividends start to re-invest, compounding will slowly start to help you along.
-
I’m in!!! $1737 in 2018. Would love to get to $10,000 in passive income one day :) I need about $48,000 per year to be FI. My current sources of passive income are my vanguard dividends and bank account interest.

We just broke the 20k ($21,723) level for 2018 passive income! Most of this is in standard vanguard funds but my company stock is now paying out about 6% dividend so that was a big boost.

Very happy with this increase. My emphasis on getting money invested, instead of waiting for the perfect buying opportunity, seems to be working. I expect February to be a low month. However, I have found a better savings account which should help with the lull months between quarterly dividends.
My other source of monthly PI, peer to peer lending (lending loop in Canada) is starting to have an unusual amount of late payments. Luckily, I only have $500 invested there, so will probably avoid further investments going forward.

Hi There
What an interesting thread! I am joining here on behalf of my daughter...
(my own passive income is $120K a year... )
My daughter is 19 and her passive income (annual) is at the moment $1198 ...
She earns 14K a year as a part time tutor while still in university ...throwing excess cash to shares , LICs regularly...
Here's hoping she will take over this thread by herself one day...:))
-
Great idea! This will take a looooong time for me. But will be fun to track!
2018 Passive Income was about $500.
Hard to know exactly b/c like others have noted, I haven't yet found where it's stated for the target date index fund in my 401(k). Others were easy to find.
Defining passive income basically as just stock dividends.
-
So my work changed 401K providers back in October and the new provider doesn't really make it easy to figure out my gains. I started tracking this myself manually. So I'll be updating by the month instead of a rolling total.
2019 Total

2019 Total

@Mainlander , what are you including as passive income?
Dividends only? Or 4% of your stock/bond stash?
NOI on rental property?

Dividends, interest earned from savings, and interest from peer to peer lending. Don’t think it works out to 4% of my stache, probably somewhere between 2% and 3%.

I'll join in and give an update quarterly in what I like to call "personal fiscal years" (my birthday is at the end of May, so using the start of June as the start of a new fiscal year is very conveniently similar to my actual-years-on-earth).
Passive income is from dividends and interest in multiple accounts.
PFY 2019: $1292.88
Plenty of room for growth. ;)

I can definitely see the effects of compounding on your passive income, nice work 👍

$10,000 in passive income is a major financial stability milestone!
It's enough to keep a roof over your head during a lengthy job loss.
It's enough to replace a car.
It's enough to replace a roof or an HVAC unit or some other major home repair expense.
It's enough to cover a serious (though not catastrophic) medical bill.
It's enough to provide food.
Congrats to all of you working so diligently at it!
Every $1000 of passive income you reach is that much closer to financial freedom, too!

Too hard to figure out. Fidelity only allows 90 days of viewing in a shot. And for some reason, it only shows one fund at a time. This is too much work....therefore not passive.
So as passive income....I'll say unknown.
If I were to figure it out, it....by definition....becomes non-passive.
Catch 22.
Or maybe Adam 12 or Car 54.

HI Mainlander
Amazing your passive income has more than doubled from when you first started 2 years ago:)
If you continue to double at this rate, the results would be amazing in the next few years! (curious to know your age too!)
Care to share how? Is it continually throwing in money into the stockmarket? Do you have a regular set amt?
Would love to hear:)..for my daughter's learning..tks!
PS: i look forward to tagging you ..as a motivating factor:)

I don't understand, if this is mostly dividends, shouldn't the numbers folks are reporting on this thread not be consistently increasing monthly? Shouldn't there be big jumps every March, June, September and especially December, then much smaller amounts for the other months?

Hey Ozlady
I’m 35 years old, and yes it is just basically just throwing money into the market. I have a variable income with overtime, so there is no set amount every month. I have a good idea of my monthly expenses so I just basically throw the extra I make into my investment accounts on payday, to avoid lifestyle inflation.
Looks like your daughter is off to a great start in life. I think most people here share the same sentiment, that we wish we would of started saving at a young age. She is going to be so grateful to you in her future. Nice work 👍.

Hey cloudsail,
My passive income is the mostly dividends, and that is generally how mine works. There might be some variation due to the dividend payout date being variable for my quarterly, semi- annual, and annual dividends.
For example, sometimes my semi annual divs pay out at the end of June, and sometimes the start of July. This has also occurred for my quarterly dividends. So depending on the payout dates, sometimes it will spread the gains over more months.

I think this is true for folks whose passive income is mostly dividends; like Mainlander, mine is pretty bunched up, with some variation depending on which month a quarterly dividend pays out. However, there are definitely going to be people with other passive income streams here.
I'd personally like to create another passive stream or two over time, but it'll take a bit.

Thanks for the link, very interesting! I've been a little interested in the real estate crowd funding thing because it's been in the news so much lately. We're more traditional real estate investors. We have two rental properties managed by property managers, so I do consider them very passive. We had two vacancies this year and I didn't even have a chance to touch base with the PM about the listings before the new renters already moved in.
I think last year between rental, dividends and interest, we netted around $40,000 in passive income. This isn't something I'm actively chasing though, as I tend to look more at total returns.

Another small increase this month. Normally I expect a nice bump in October. However, I’ve sold off some ESPP shares this summer, and with the high markets never got all the money reinvested. I’m sitting on about 20k cash in my registered accounts now, and plan to DCA it into index funds for the remainder of the year.

Next short term goal is 2700 which involves throwing in about 2400 into either VAS/LICs at average rate of 5.5% return. This should be completed by mid Nov.
Footnote: to earn that $2568 at the current bank's extremely low term deposit rate of about 1.7% (1 yr) would involve her putting in 151 058...ie another way of looking at things!

August 2019 : 2197
Sept 2019 : 2492
Oct 2019: 2568
Nov 2019 : 2700 (5% increase over Oct)
Net worth is now $37975 which equates to a 7.11% return (not bad!)
So DD has hit spot on her goal of $2700 in passive income this month:)...
I told her she has earned a free air ticket to Europe EVERY YEAR for the rest of her life OR another way of looking at it is she has earned herself the option of taking off 1 month FOR THE REST OF HER LIFE without really needing to work :)...
Now the next goal is to work towards the Second Month and so on and on...
Passive Income ROCKS!
Next goal is 3000 which is going to be more difficult ; this would require her to throw in $5000 in savings to buy either LICs/VAS at about 5% return...She leaves for Paris in early Dec so this is the last month she can earn her side hustle of giving tuition...
Footnote: to earn that $2700 at the current bank's extremely low term deposit rate of about 1.7% (1 yr) would involve her putting in 158 823...ie it is as if ther pseudo net worth is 158 823 instead of 37975....
Now extrapolate that to 17 000 anuual passive income and her pseudo net worth is $1 million !(Bingo!)

Smaller than normal increase for quarterly results. This is due to me selling a good portion (1/4) of my ESP shares (which pays about a 4-5% div) to put into index funds. To clarify, my primary focus is not to maximize my dividends, as my index funds average less than a 3% div payout. My main focus is to maintain a diversified portfolio of etfs, but in the meantime I enjoy tracking my passive income during my journey.
I am going to receive my checking account annual cash back bonus in November ($300). Not sure whether I will include this in my passive income. As it is being discontinued next month in exchange for a reward program

Happy New Years everybody. Cheers to another solid year of financial gains. On the passive income front, December was an average month. Missed my year end goal of 5k, but managed to move a good portion of my investments into index funds.
My goal for 2020 is to reach 6k in passive income. The past 2 years I have gained about 1k each, so here’s to hoping I will start to see some compounding help out in 2020.

May 2019 : 1369
June 2019 : 1769

Nov 2019 : 2700
Dec 2019: 2716
Jan 2020: 2809 (3.4% increase over Dec due mainly to investments in Vanguard Growth Fund)
Net worth is now $50074 which equates to a 5.6% return...
Footnote: The % return has dropped from previous mth due to sitting on nearly $8000 of cash (due to Christmas gifts and extra work) waiting to be deployed once the Coronavirus impact becomes a little clearer...
Still waiting to hit that target of 3K passive income:(...hopefully by 30 June 2020...

I just found this thread and I'm really excited about it. Every month I look forward to posting updates in the Race from 10k to 100k thread (https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/throw-down-the-gauntlet/race-from-10-to-100k!!/msg2636680/#msg2636680), and this seems like it will be really fun to track as well.

Covid has thrown a dampener on her savings rate :(
Footnote: so with a huff and a puff, DD just managed to scrape through the 3K mark ; mainly due to continued investing in the Vanguard Managed Fund (Diversified Growth).
Still sitting on a cash pile of about 11K which will be dripped in monthly ... this will help her towards her next soft goal of 3500 by June 2021.

07/01/2020: $6,074
While 2020 has been a rollercoaster ride, my passive income has steadily grown. Before the pandemic I was sitting on a large cash balance, which I finally invested in March for a nice discount.
Beside that, I recently doubled my EESP contributions, so expect to see nice increases for the remainder of the year.
-
Passive income (dividends, account interest) since June 1 is $448.91. Slow n steady.
We're now at $492. Very slow, very steady. ;)
Passive income (dividends, account interest) since June 1 is $2097.63. My 401k dividends this last month were just... massive. I know that year end dividends are a Thing, but I looked at this and was like "are you kidding me?!" What a jump.
1 June 2019--31 May 2020: total passive income (dividends, interest) was $2509.87. This is pretty much the double of the year before.
Passive interest since 1 June 2020 is $294.48. Somehow I don't think this one is gonna double so much what with the 'rona, but we'll see.

Q2 dividends were down a few hundred from last year. We'll see if that trend holds for the rest of 2020.

Please help me to understand as I have been paying off debt and not even concerned with passive income-I don't think I even know what it is in this context.
So my husband and I each have a 401k which we are contributing to each paycheck- so that goes up, but do I just count how much it goes up OVER the amount I put in?
I also have a small mutual fund account with TIAA, which I'm putting money in- do I just calculate how much I make above and beyond what I put in.
Then I have a small savings account that I'm not adding to right now- so that one's pretty easy.
-
@rachellynn99 I only count dividends and interest that my investments generate, not market gains/losses. Your 401k statement probably indicates how much dividends/interest your investments produced per the period - that's the number you want to look at. Your mutual fund account would also have some way that it tracks this information, though I'm not familiar with TIAA.

Same for me -- I don't track market gains here, just dividends and interest. (If I had royalties or other types of passive income, I'd track that too, but I don't.)
You should be able to see dividends/interest in your transactions history in most accounts.

Yes my mutual funds were pretty easy, I'll have to find out for our retirement accounts. Thank you, this is helpful.

What do people classify as passive income? I have a pension from a prior employer I can start anytime between now at age 46, and would get 12,000 a year, or as late as age 70, and would get about 40k a year. I could also start a SEPP right now at 33k, and that would slowly increase over time. No real estate cash flow or living purely off dividends though for me.

August sees a big jump from June ; mainly due to a local bank offering a 3% savings rate to anyone below 25 years old and mum helping to plonk 30K in on her behalf...i know it is "cheating" but i have the excess cash and i know she will repay this to me in time...it is also a good learning point to discuss ...
Footnote: DD still has $12714 in cash from which she is earning pittance interest atm ..she will drip into shares/managed funds ..i foresee a big drop in her earnings for the 2nd half of the year....

Before the pandemic of 2020, I had been getting a decent amount of monthly cash dividends in my cash brokerage account (EF) - which promptly fell to almost $0/month for the year. Otherwise I think I had a chance of over $575 in post-tax income and $950 overall for the year. Oh well. In 2020, I put in $6K to my Roth IRA for 2019, and over the year I put in another $6K for 2020, so I've been squealing at watching those growing dividends. I need to beef up my post-tax accounts a bit, though. I'm not pleased with where that passive income is at. Onward to 2021.

12 month Forward earnings in Investment acct only: $8564.50.
I was getting pretty close to 10K pre-covid until multiple dividend cuts (including a few blue-chip, 'recession-proof' companies that I had only recently invested in to diversify and as a safe harbor.)
I have dividends in other accounts, but this is the one that is funding the 'early' part of my early retirement, so that's what I'm counting.
Canadian banks have had to freeze dividends, so I hope to see a bit of a boost when the govt frees them from present restrictions.

DD is still static since the last time...too much online shopping and socialising means slight improvement ..but she is young and should be allowed to enjoy herself before starting work...

First update to this thread in a year. Passive income increased by 1400 in the past year, with me putting no focus towards it. I am going to put a renewed focus on increasing passive income this year, with a goal of graduating from here next July.

Need to stop focusing only on the total and need to focus on the future salary. Dividends only - Vanguard accounts

1 June 2019--31 May 2020: total passive income (dividends, interest) was $2509.87. This is pretty much the double of the year before.
Passive income since 1 June 2020 is $294.48. Somehow I don't think this one is gonna double so much what with the 'rona, but we'll see.
1 June -- 30 September passive income: $429.28
1 June -- 30 November passive income: 760.87
1 June 2020 - 31 May 2021 passive income: $2362.41.

So for passive income do you only mean dividends?
I sell tradelines (SO easy) and do various bank bonuses...they take a little work but not much. Also my various crypto gets a great amount of % per month for doing nothing, though hard to measure (most of it is in USDC though and that's currently getting about 9% APR, I'm paid weekly). Also have a bunch of savings accounts paying around 5-6% APR each, couple thousand there.
I'm not sure where the line is between side hustle and "passive". Thanks!
-
I think it probably varies for person. I only have dividends and interest, so that's what I include. I'm sure other folks have some more interesting stuff included.
I think the side hustle/passive income line is probably not very clean. For example, if you write as a side hustle and receive ongoing royalties, those royalties are usually considered passive income -- but they're coming out of a side hustle.
-
@dizzy - in my book crypto yield counts as passive income.
I was actually thinking about putting up a crypto challenge thread just for passive income. Maybe I will, just to see if there is interest.

If I wanted to get an accurate number including tradeline sales, dividends, interest, credit card sign on, manufactured spending, it would take some work, making it become non-passive, so I'm not going to do that. :D
-
: D Everyone chooses what to include for themselves here (just like in the net worth threads).
I stick to just dividends & interest, since they're deeply passive in that zero action is required on my part to continue receiving them in perpetuity.
My accounts are simple, so that's only 2 numbers to add : )
But I fully support your decision to keep work far away from your passive income ; )

This seems like a fun race to enter as I have always liked the passive income my investments bring. The end goal is to grow it to $36,000 to cover the Household bills so we have a ways to go. Plus this should match up well with the other races I'm participating in.

Hi Diehard
Not all investments are from dividends (we are in Australia btw)..some are in our superannuation, some in bank deposits (we have a special for under 25s at 3% and also these are historical yields not current yields (as in shares are bought some time ago..)

Wow, had not realized Dec would be this high. This is my first year with a large portfolio chunk rolled from TIAA into Vanguard, so am seeing the dividends for the first time. It won't be till March that my trailing 12-month total will fully include that change, so one more jump ahead, then should stabilize.

Did not track my month to month this past year, I will likely begin that in the next month or two!
2021: $1204 (All Dividens)
I am looking to increase my passive income from Dividens to $2000 this year, which is approximately 1 month of spending/living cost for me. Additionally, I plan to prepare my current house to become a rental throughout the year, and plan to rent it out in 2023! I'll try to update this monthly for 2022, everyone keep up the good work!

Today is 19 March 2022
It has been quite a while; and the major happening is Russia has invaded Ukraine:(
Time for an update on the kids' Net Worth and Passive Income.
My 3 children's passive income is as follows:
DS1 DD DS2
Age 25 22 20
Passive income 8304 5932 3961
(rolling annual)
Net worth 178033 76566 62411
Rate of return 4.6% 7.7% 6.3%
Remarks:
DS1: Fantastic surge of Net worth...still living at home , driving his used car and high savings rate...still on track to hit millionaire status by 30:)
Howver at this point in time, with 3 more months to go, i do not think he is going to hit his target of 10K Passive Income by June (unless he throws in 10K per month into equity investment). But he can always aim for it and try to hit at least 9K:)
His low equity and super investments (59% of net worth) and corresponding high cash position explains his low rate of return .
DD2: Penultimate year of Uni and has not much time (or inclination) to do much part time work...her savings are 93% invested though in equities and super and that accounts for her high rate of return compared to her brother.
DS2: He is plodding along with his part time tutor work ( 4 students atm)..income not high but living on the smell of an oily rag...lowish expenses too:)
He is 78% invested in equity and super and that is reflected in his rate of return .
ONWARDS AND FORWARDS!

This looks like a fun tracking thread. Currently 51 and started my dividend investing account last Novemeber. Decided that I need an additional stream of income in retirement (which is only 5-7 years away). So just looking to see what I can accomplish in that time frame.
Goal #1 get dividend to 100/quarter
Goal #2 get dividents to 100/month average
Goal #3 get dividends to 500/quarter
Goal #4 get dividends to 500/month (this might be a bit lofty based on my time frame but what the heck, lets see if I can get it there!)

Jan 2022 13.84
Feb 2022 57.36
Mar 2022 34.47 Q1 total 105.67

Today is 7 July 2022
It has been a long while since last update ..since then the stock market has been on a long slide down about 20%..and inflation is roaring around the world..
Meanwhile the kids are still plodding along..increasing their net worth..they have not been investing (except through their superannuation ) and waiting patiently to re-enter the market ...
My 3 children's passive income is as follows:
DS1 DD DS2
Age 25 22 20
Passive income 9083 5184 3408
(rolling annual)
Net worth 182415 76360 62749
Rate of return 4.9% 6.8% 5.4%
Remarks:
The children's net worth has not improved by much in spite of earnings due mainly to a slide of their equity portfolio and superannuation.
DS1 continues to hit a high savings rate and is sitting on a big pile of cash ($63839). He is still aiming to hit first milestone of $10K in passive income which is eluding him in this market:(
Still not bad for someone his age who graduated with a net worth of $300 ..and hardly worked but played hard all throughout uni! (so there's hope yet for all the parents reading this!)...he should still be on track to hit $1 mil by age 30...
DD 2's cash position continues to slide due to reduction in work hours and increase in social eating out and spending (Lol!)...she is leaving for London for an internship for 3 months and will spend it big touring Europe after...she has taken a loan ($7K) from the uni/govt which will be added to her HECS ..at this stage, quite unlikely to hit her $100K net worth on graduation ...
She has kinda convinced herself she needs to "front" spend/travel now as she will have low chances of doing that in future (young doctor)...(i keep my mouth zipped with her decisions !)
DS 2 continues to plod along; with high savings rate and part time work ; this is the child i foresee will hit a $100K net worth on graduation...he continues to surprise his Dad and I with his consistency.
Onwards and forwards!

Good news however is that DS1 has finally broken his annual passive income target of $10k :) ...that took quite a while but it was helped by the various banks increasing their transaction rates...by the time i finish typing this i half suspect he will break the $11k mark by shifting over to other banks who are offering higher rates...
Note: next target 12K by June 2023!
He is also due to break the $200K net worth mark very soon ...and has been told he will have a pay increase to a 6 figure mark come Jan 2023. So he is trending strongly and is one fifth finished on his journey to being a millionaire (by 30).
DD is not working too much as she is having year end exams and DS2 has completely stopped his part time work too (his students are all retreating to final exam prep) ..he is a private tutor ...
So i foresee they will not see much increase in Net worth or Passive income in the next 6 months...but that's okay as sometimes Life gets in the way...
I told the kids that Investing is not a Constant Journey and there is bound to be Ebbs and Flows...but when it is Flowing (like my DS1), one should grab the sails and enjoy the headwinds!

An update on the kids' progress to end this year...Good news ! My eldest son has finally broken his goal of passive income $12K a year...
DS1 DD DS2
Age 25 23 21

The RBA is expected to hike rates for 1 or 2 more times in the coming quarter...most analysts are expecting the equity market to slide in the first half amidst the coming recession...
My DS1 has finally broken the $12K passive income goal...due mainly to hikes in banks' savings rates and he has a large cash position ( i think his ING Orange Saver account is giving him 4.55% rate..fancy that!)
his next target will be $15K by next June or latest Sept. with a corresponding target net worth of $270K.
Happy New Year to all!

Never really looked/planned on dividends this way - but I like the idea and will join to do the same thing for 2023.
I will have to tally the 2022 figures first, though, to see where I stand - and will have a reinvest policy to put the dividends back into the distribution fonds (most of my funds are set up as accumulator). Unfortunately, it's all taxable...
So, I will start fresh in Jan!
-
It is difficult for me to track my monthly dividend as some of my accounts do not post the dividends received until the end of the year.
2021: $1,204 (Dividends/Interest)
2022: $2,536 (Dividends/Interest)
Solid progress on the year, despite the rough year in regards to the stock market. I purchased a significant number of stock shares during the last quarter of 2022, and expect my year dividend/interest total to increase to over $4000 next year (I will use $4,000 as my goal and $4,500 as my stretch goal for 2023).

Looking at your progress thus far, I suspect you will be nearing the $500 a month mark close to a year from now, nice job!

First update to this thread in a year. Passive income increased by 1400 in the past year, with me putting no focus towards it. I am going to put a renewed focus on increasing passive income this year, with a goal of graduating from here next July.

1 June 2019--31 May 2020: total passive income (dividends, interest): $2509.87. This is pretty much the double of the year before.
1 June 2020 - 31 May 2021 passive income: $2362.41. Not bad for a global pandemic.
Trying to toodle back onto the forums a bit and this is a thread I have been keeping up with in my heart (i.e. I've been tracking all this time!):

hey comicguy are there any particular dividend bearing stocks/funds that you like?
I have always toyed with the idea of having a massive position in a dividend growth fund that will act like a pension when I retire, but I am not sure where to park my cash

The only advice I can give is invest in companies/funds that you know/understand in order to be able to make appropriate choices!

I really like your metric, @comicguy.
I have adopted it for myself, as well - the first goals I have hit last year, I am now working on 500 quid/quarter (but not yet consistently there).
I reached goal #3 on average but not still not equally enough distributed across the months. So, will keep working on this by adding some more distro funds into this year's asset allocation.
-
It is difficult for me to track my monthly dividend as some of my accounts do not post the dividends received until the end of the year.
2021: $1,204 (Dividends/Interest)
2022: $2,536 (Dividends/Interest)
2023: $3,696 (Dividends/Interest)
Solid progress again this year. I am hoping to reach the 5k mark in 2024 with a stretch goal of 5.5k. As always, it is great to see everyone's progress here!
-
I started tracking Dividends in 2021 and I've made some pretty massive progress in that time. I don't plan to update regularly, but wouldn't mind updating this thread yearly to track my overall progress! Here's where I'm at over the last three years:
2021: $411.02
2022: $1,103.17
2023: $2,011.63
My overall goal with dividends is to get them to $5,400/year and a stretch of $6,700/year. If I can keep up the pattern of doubling dividend payouts every year...well that would be amazing (unlikely though, haha). A lot of my dividend paying stocks lowered their payouts this year, so hoping there is a bit of a bump as the economy picks up in 2024. But who knows!
