One Song Wonder: Week 5+
« on: August 15, 2018, 11:57:49 PM »
one song: one improvement [one week] The brain child of @joonifloofeefloo
Thread Aug 16 - Aug ??? (Can't promise to be as prompt as jooni shutting this one down, but plan to wrap no longer than the 31st)

After one week-ish, we lock the thread and start a new one so people aren't receiving notifications for the rest of their lives.

The idea: You know those tasks that are quick and really improve your day, but you avoid like the plague? This thread supports us to set press play on the song of our choice and move on that task for the duration of the song. Extra Challenge: Whenever we see this thread because someone has bumped it up with a new "go", whoever is on it stops what they're doing, and joins in.

Stuff one might improve, depending on personal circumstances:

*improve minimalism: scan stuff
*improve personal security: shred stuff
*improve environment: put dry dishes away
*improve mood: write a thank you note
*improve body: do pushups
*improve blood sugar: eat some protein
*improve ambience: put the thing back into the storage room
*improve foot happiness: vacuum one room
*improve stress load: wash one unmentionable
*improve floor smoothness: wash one section of floor

PTF!

It might be less work intensive to do monthly or longer versions... since people seem to like the concept and aren't begging to escape :-)

Good point, DS!

I'm allergic to eternal threads so wanted to assure people an end, but the 31st seems like a good go for this month and then whatever an OP decides beyond that?

I Got Men All Over This Town - Victoria Spivey

*made coffee
*washed and heat-dried cast iron pan
*put all the dishes that fit to soak
*moved dining table/chairs for more room/comfort while painting home

Thank goodness (a.k.a oneday) for this thread, or that pile was just going to drive me crazy!

Spotify moved to Cabaret: So What. So funny!!!

Tracks of My Tears: Smokey Robinson

-Picked up all the things piled on the stairs (a bad habit of mine!) and put them in their homes
-Got a laundry load ready

Copying Serendip in Tracks of My Tears: Smokey Robinson to:

*clean paint-cleaning bucket
*partially fill bucket with hot soapy water
*take roller and brush from fridge, rest in water

DONE! with near-perfect timing. I’d been pretty stressed/avoidant about that task. Was easy, of course :)

Listened to some unreleased live cuts of a Roy Nathanson quintet to finally get those damn dishes done. (I have terrible eczema on my hands and didn't have any gloves so had put that job off for unreasonable amounts of time... got some gloves and did a LOT of dishes.)

Not a song but I used the time it takes to brew a cup of tea to tackle OUR FILTHY FILTHY STOVE TOP. It is now shiny and clean.
Gosh, for people who cook as much as we do, we have a surprisingly high tolerance for groddy stoves. (And iron stomachs.)

mspym, I really need to clean my stove.  I cooked 3 hamburger patties over the last week, each time thinking that I would clean after the next hamburger!  Hasn't happened yet, but the meat is all gone, so a good time to do this.

I started the painting with Celebration, and let Spotify do its funky thang for the 2+ hours it took me to finish the job. I had just wrapped up and was sealing the lid back onto the paint bucket when the opening song came back on! The paint job was a perfect and complete Spotify cycle! And what a great theme to wrap up the work :)

Borrowed Serendip's Aretha list.

First song: convinced cat to get off my legs
Second song: out of bed & scrubbed the stovetop.

That's a good start to the day.

Awesome--that is one thing I am finding with this thread. If I say "only one song"..the momentum builds and off I go (sometimes I stick with one or two songs, but just getting things moving really helps)

I am in emergency preparedness mode,
(totatally unintentional but appropriate song starting it off)
Stay Alive: Jose Gonzalez

-started making up a bag for potential emergency situations, gathered passport, b.certificate,  cash
-water filter system, sleeping bag, small amount of dried food
-sentimental jewelery

I'm so so so glad others have found this system helpful! Everyone's participation is half of what makes it work for me!

Kenny Rogers: The Gambler
Put final things away for beauty

*put all clean, dried, folded laundry away in correct spots
*pulled out tall stack of loose papers: perused, filed, shredded
*washed garbage can, set to dry
*put runaway items in night spot
*merged paint supplies
*put roomba pieces in hiding, til I'm ready to face the truth
*properly filed/stored games, etc

Okay, after making my body freak out by online banking, I'm going to walk to my garden and water it -proprioception FTW!

But after, I need to start taking steps to invest some bounty. I've been fretting about businesses stealing money ($2000 + $400 + $200 by my perceptions). But honestly, I'm stealing far more from myself by not investing available savings. I'm allergic to the process of buying funds. But I'm putting this here so I'll one song each step, which are:

1. Open brokerage webpage Done!

2. Print each account Done!

3. Look at those Done!

4. Where I see more than $100 cash, enter the amount into reallocation spreadsheet Cheery Love - Happy Piano Collective

5. Buy one. "It's Only A Paper Moon" - Paul Whiteman

6. Review all accounts to ensure aligned with planning.

Oooo, Styx "Come Sail Away" just started.  I'll jump up & do something then report back.

Decided to deal with papers.  Organized all the papers for a program I just started.  Boy, there was a lot to be recycled and it's only week 2!  Also did the "homework" for that and gathered together all the program info in one spot.  Now I feel ready to handle whatever else happens in that program! This ended up taking 10 1/2 songs.

Tossed in a load of laundry.  That, washing a few dishes and the computer clean up from earlier was the sum total of what I did this evening.  I had grand plans, but feel so tired.  Bed early tonight, I guess.

Listening to a music-buddy DJing on WZBC to get myself up and in the kitchen to make a healthy high-fiber snack (...OK, popcorn) so I could take some meds on a non-empty stomach.

Didn't have a lot of healthy eating options today due to a water main break.  I just went grocery shopping yesterday and was all virtuous and only bought chicken and vegetables and spices. Didn't want to cook chicken without having clean water to wash up with, and didn't want to cook veg without being able to wash them, so was stuck with pantry items. Couldn't make pasta, rice, beans, etc. without water. Haven't been eating many carbs so I didn't have any bread, crackers, cereal, etc. Very limiting... :-/

I haven't been doing much One Song. I'd been feeling increasingly tired over the past few weeks -was still doing a lot but in silence. Last two nights I've gotten copious rest, so am ready again!

I have an evening to prep food and body for, and I'd like to return to a clear space despite my painting project, so will go with my old standby of Mutabor playlist, starting... NOW!

*onions chopped and simmering for potluck dish
*roomba and dock relocated back to painted room
*teeth coconut oiled
*moved bedroom and my toys upstairs, to clear space in prep for painting
*put remaining ingredients on to simmer
*picked up and processed neighbour's mail
*picked up and processed not-my mail
*collated, stapled, filed yesterday's business deposits
*stapler back to its house
*put away gym stuff
*gym snack onto shopping list
*put gifted magazines into bathroom cupboard for bubble baths :)
*backup charger into charger basket
*shredded shreddables
*pens + into pencil case
*outing stuff into outing bag
*shopping bags back into car
*lemongrass into diffuser and on
*chequebook back into its place
*recycling bin by door

YEAH!!!!

Now a rest before Phase 2.

meghan88, welcome x2!  I would say the only possible way to cheat is to post without making a small improvement (lie to the thread).  And who would know but you?  Unless I am just not devious enough to think of other ways to cheat.  Anyway, the point is to have fun but also pick up a little productivity.  Just a little!  There's no real wrong way.  Many of us find that once we get going, our momentum snowballs.  But at least for me, just as often I turn back into a couch potato when the song ends :)

LOL!! Oh no!!!

A little like my fiasco of last week, when I put on the song at 9pm to do the very last step to get my house sparkling...got caught up in the tune such that the sink overflowed terribly, resulting in me being up til the wee hours cleaning up the flood, then driving to another city the next day to do all the resulting laundry... Argh. But I got there! The house did eventually get back to normal.

Yep!   Smaller in scope, though..  I had been waiting for the water to dry up.  From experience, I know it's easier to clean up after drying.

And I had *almost* enough momentum to toss in a load of laundry.  Had to ask myself, "do you want to have to wear damp pants to work again?"  That did the trick.

Then opened up the curtains for some nice natural light.  I am letting myself off the hook for the rest of the day, productivity wise.

Bobby McFerrin: Don't Worry, Be Happy

Took measurements of scratch post; I have been putting this task off for a long time, so I hope this will spur me to finish recovering the post.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
