Mustachian Transportation 2020
« on: January 07, 2020, 09:03:08 AM »
Would you like to keep track of your transportation decisions from a Mustachian perspective in 2020? If so, please consider joining the Mustachian Transportation Challenge, version 2020! I propose the following rules:

If you ride a bike (or other muscle-powered transport mechanism) or take public transportation for your commute, that day counts as 100% M. Transportation. If you drive a car by yourself, that would be 0%. If you carpool, use one minus the percentage of the car your body takes up for the day (so a carpool with four members would count as 75% M. Transportation). Ride your bike halfway, then drive halfway? 50%.

Tally up your overall percentage for each month and post here to keep a running progress report. Also, feel free to set a target for your M. Transportation Percentage. I'm shooting for 75% M. Transportation, which is 5% higher than my percent from last year.

Good luck to all of the participants!

But as someone who drives an EV solo 4 miles to the bus station to take the bus to work 20 miles... I get  what percent?  ;)

Your call, my man! Perhaps you might want to bike to the bus stop some percentage of the time (as I do), and this could be your challenge? Or, if you feel you've optimized your commute given the options presented, this challenge wouldn't be too challenging for you.

To directly answer your question, you're at least 90% in my book (bonus if you have a renewable energy source for your EV).

January complete! In addition to my previously stated goal of 75% Mustachian Transportation, I'm going to add the goal of doing at least 20% of my (20+ mile) trips by bike (last year, though I didn't keep track, it was probably closer to 10%). Here's Jan's stats:

Month     Mustachian Travel Days       Trips By Bike
Jan         15/17 (88%)                      7/34 (21%)
TOTAL     15/17 (88%)                      7/34 (21%)

I'll play along. I usually have to drive to work 1 day a week so I can take my daughter to school on the way, but I can usually bike the other days.

Month     Mustachian Travel Days
Jan         10/23 (43%)
TOTAL     10/23 (43%)

Edit: I realized I read the rules wrong. Will provide updated stats when I have time to do a proper accounting.

Sweet! Let us know if you want to set a target goal. That way, you get to face the gauntlet of MMM face-punches should you fall short (and the Mustachian equivalent of a prize should you succeed, but I'm struggling to picture what that might be).

(J/K about the face-punches :)

It's time to update my February:

Month     Mustachian Travel Days       Trips By Bike
Jan         15/17 (88%)                      7/34 (21%)
Feb         16/17 (94%)                      6/34 (18%)
TOTAL     31/34 (91%)                      13/68 (19%)

This looks like a good place for me to post that I just gave up my car for lent. I will be regretting that on Sunday morning when the train isn't running early enough to get me to work for 7am and I have to cycle 10 miles there.

A worthy goal indeed.

Is this just a Sunday morning thing? If so, I think you'll quickly get used to that 10-mile ride, and begin to look forward to Sunday mornings before too long.

Sure, I'll shoot for 75%. This means another round of face punches when I post my Feb. results, but something to shoot for moving forward. I'll take all future Mustachian prizes in the form of saving money on gas and maintenance so I can quit working sooner, with a side of improved physical health, mental health, and the smugness that badassity brings.

Sure, why not.  Going to fudge a tad and just account for my solo transportation for commuting/errands/whatever.  Not any travel for work/vacation, or anytime I'm driving the whole family somewhere (generally just happens once or twice per weekend).

Month     Mustachian Travel Days       Percent of miles biked vs driven
Jan         25/25 (100%)                    351/351 (100%)
Feb         17/19 (89%)                      210/240 (88%)
TOTAL     42/44 (95%)                      561/591 (95%)

Took a long family vacation in February, so a lot of days were skipped.  No bike riding, but we drove instead of flying, so better from a carbon standpoint at least.  The two fails were (1) one trip to Sam's club that I couldn't quite pull off with my bike, and (2) one trip a far-away DMV while troubleshooting a problem with my wife's car.  The latter trip was doable by bike, but I was time-constrained and also wanted to make sure the car was ok after an earlier issue.

I've been tracking on my own calendar at home, but hadn't seen this thread until now. And I've fallen behind without the accountability! Plus, my partner has also started biking to work, which means our shared car is more often sitting at home, tempting me. Last year, biking was approximately my only option; now, it takes more willpower to bike to work since there's an alternative. Ultimately this is a great opportunity for both of us to use less gas, though!

The carpool rules may yet save me. I will have to estimate that for the two months so far. Will report later when I get home to my calendar.

I'm going to borrow the idea of tracking bike miles (for commuting to/from work). Each one-way bike trip for me is about 20 miles, and on days I ride the bus my bike trip to/from the bus stop is about a mile. So to update my work commute stats:

Month   Mustachian Travel Days     Trips By Bike    Approx. Commuting Bike Miles

At the end of 2019, I casually suggested an 80% goal for this year. Let's see if I can make it. As mentioned above, I'm estimating carpool days, counting them all for 50%.

February had a bunch of unusual days (drove to a conference or took time off), which are not counted.

Month   Bike days   Carpool days   Total
January13/20 (65%)   6/2016/20 (80%)
February   8/15 (53%)3/159.5/15 (63%)

Hi people.  I know many people are working from home or have had their work situations change.  Hope everyone is doing well.  I work in a hospital, so I've been actually working more, as I had to cancel all my leave days over the past 2 months.

I was active in the 2019 thread, but faded away due to the winter weather in Chicago.  I was embarrassed by how little I was able to bike this winter.
I think a healthier approach to my counting will be to excuse myself for the months December through February.  That way I don't get down on myself too much for skipping the bike on ice and storm days.

Anways, I rode in today in a snowstorm.  I think that qualifies me to get my Mustachian Transportation card back ;).

Month      Bike days      Total
March   9/22 (41%)      9/22   (41%)

I've still been tracking bike days, even though I'm not going anywhere. I get 100% every week. ;) I biked 9 days in March, only 3 days in April so far - but I have picked up more at-home exercise in the meantime.

@erutio, your biking and your hospital work both qualify as Extremely Badass. Thank you.

Ha!  Yes, I totally forgot about this thread with the world craziness and lack of commuting.  Similar to you, my biking is close to 100% these days...of a tiny, tiny number.  I miss biking.

I did take one car trip to Sam's Club in mid-March for a big haul when I saw the writing on the wall for coronavirus lockdowns, but that was my only car trip since February.  Man, was that trip miserable.  I biked the next time in with better results.  Now we're doing delivery.

I only biked 6 days in April, and 1 in May so far. However, tomorrow I go back to work! Aiming for 100% of good weather days (which should be most of them!)

Biked to work 13 days in June! That's a little more respectable. Percentage-wise I'm still at 100% - I haven't driven to work since March.

It was very sad - I only had to actually go in to work on one day in all of June...and I drove.  I had planned to bike, but as I was pulling the bike out onto the road, I realized that my headlight (integrated with the e-bike power system/battery) wasn't working, and it was 2 am.  I'm not about to ride an e-bike on Los Angeles streets in the middle of the night without a headlight.  I do have a backup, but it would've taken at least 10-15 minutes of rummaging around and waking up my wife again, and I didn't have the time then.

It did give me a chance to flex some Mustachian muscles with an inexpensive replacement via some soldering and jury-rigged bracket fixation.

Tracking my travels outside of commuting proved to be too complicated, plus almost all of my non-commuting trips are either me on my bike or I'm driving with family in the car. So I'm just going to track my trips to work and back, which is most of the miles I cover anyway.

Commutes    By bike    By car     Bike %
Jan      23                    9        14           39%

Better weather, and it's no longer busy season for me. I was working from home most days starting mid March through mid May, which meant most of the time when I went to the office I had too much stuff to carry on my bike. I also don't have to take any kids to school on the way to work right now because it's summer.

One of the biggest factors though is just being in the habit of biking.

I drove to work 3 days this month, for the first time since March, purely for time management reasons. I could have avoided at least 1 of those by planning ahead better. I biked to work 13 days and worked from home the others, which gives me an 81% bike rate.

Out of town for half the month.  Started biking to the grocery store again, though, after doing Instacart-only for several months.

There were some days this month where I was travelling for work and had to drive. I'm ignoring those days because there was nothing I could do to avoid driving. Hopefully I'll hit 100% soon.

This month was terrible, in terms of commuting. We had really bad wildfire smoke so I did a lot of driving, and I did some out of the office work that required me drive long distances. I realized how much I take are normally excellent air quality for granted.

I expected this month to be a lot worse, because I barely biked to work at all. When I looked at my Google Maps data though I realized a lot of days I was travelling to far away client offices and biking wasn't an option and I worked from home 2 days as well. So it turns out there were really only 3 days that I could have biked and chose to drive, so not so bad after all. No more work travel so my bike commute number should be up a lot for Nov.
