Monthly goals - February 2022
« on: January 30, 2022, 08:03:04 AM »
If anyone has started a February 2022 thread yet, let me know and I'll delete this.

February 2022:
1. Get up at 6 on weekdays, 7 on weekends
2. Get to the office by 8. Park at the nearest free parking space and walk 20 mins to the office (thanks, Amsterdam)
2. Study 2 hours a day on weekdays - first thing in the morning. 8-10 AM (I can study during work)
3. Read a chapter daily
4. Lumosity, Duolingo and sudoku daily
5. Exercise three times a week: gym twice and bike ride once
6. Clean 15 minutes a day
7. Groceries on Saturday
8. Budget and weekly planning on Sunday
9. Weigh on Sundays - lose 4kg.

I'm ready to roll:) into February with remaining and ongoing projects and a few new goals.

NEW GOALS - Health and Diet
PILATES - 3 to 5 days a week - 20 to 30 minutes each, before breakfast.
FOOD - go meatless minimum twice a week.
Serve raw veggies, fresh steamed veggies, and fresh organic fruit at least once a day - all month long.
Try one or several of the GRITS RECIPES I've had forever - or - get rid of them by the end of the month.
Start using the HP MONITOR at least once a day in January to get a better idea of my true average.
I'm getting a workout in the garden but I'd really like to add more walking -we'll see.

ONGOING

SPRING GARDENING

Finish seeding veggies and herbs and flowers - buy lettuce plantlings - working on it

Shed Area and Potting Area and Behind the Shed
More clean up and organizing - in progress

Weeding, mulching and composting - in progress

New - get garden help and professional tree service
Cut down Bougainvillea - professional
Lay two new garden paths - professional
Add a short connecting pathway from shade garden to tropical garden - DIY

New - mailbox fix and beautifying project - DIY and creative project
New - DIY - back entry project and landscaping

Three CREATIVE PROJECTS - (JAN) continued into February
Finish the Garden Gate and Garden Decor Project (25% done)
Finish the Rose Quartz Pendant and Chain - 90% done.
Egyptian Jewelry Set - Necklace and Earrings - no progress yet.

PAPER CLUTTER - FEB GOAL
Tackle four stacks of paper (Study)

DE-CLUTTER and general SPRING CLEANING
Do six drawers - spice, knife, bathroom, and three clothes drawers.
Spring clean and de-clutter Bedroom.
Spend one hour or so twice a week on organizing and de-cluttering any area of the house or shed or closets or bookcases.

It is hard to tell how long some of these projects will take both the spring gardening and spring cleaning will continue into March so my actual deadline for both is March 31. At that time I will prioritize and put every effort into completing them by April 15.

Paper Clutter Deadline is around Mar 5, so my goal is actually to have the entire study in tip top shape by the end of February, giving myself an extra five days in March.

Special Project this month is to buy and install three new light fixtures - hopefully, this will be done by mid-month.

Stay focused and don't forget to have fun - good luck with your Feb goals everyone:).

Thanks for starting the Feb thread!

1. Read 10 books
  a. 1 Philosophy (started)
  b. 1 History/Natural History (started)
  c. 4 from TBR
2. Do at least 15 sit-ups per day (average)
3. Meditation - Sit in chair and do 1 breath pattern - 14/28 days
4. Spend time outside at least 3 days/week

Creativity:
5. Repair an article of clothing
6. Bake something
7. Try a new recipe

Social:
8. Plan a gathering for friends
9. See family (art exhibit)
10. Celebrate Imbolc

Meditation was a hard one for me to start last month, I think because this type (didactic meditation) sounds more difficult.  So I'm breaking it down to the first step of sit and breathe.

I'm joining this one! Not many goals, really just 2, but I'm going to need accountability and a place to vent lol.

1. No spend. I spent A LOT in December and January due to being home abroad with my family, and I feel like I need a cleansing break now. So no frivolous spend in February - no new running clothes (ah!), no eating out (this one should be easy enough), no "stuff". Just my regularly scheduled monthly expenses.

2. Diet. Been doing it since mid-January. I lost about 1.5kgs, mostly water weight I think, but I know it always takes a few weeks before it starts working. So no number, beyond the fact that I need to lose about 8kgs total, but I'll keep at it. This means intentional grocery shopping, cooking ever meal from scratch, and no slow carbs for a few more weeks. Hopefully I can also do some meal prep for freezing. I'm actually enjoying this - I feel better. Should help keep my grocery bill within budget too.

Here’s my Feb goals:

1) Get the will FINALLY done. Will cost $$ for a lawyer but we know how much and I just need to pay and finish the paperwork.
2) Spend under $500 for groceries. I’ve got a pretty solid plan to get us through next week without needing to shop (except maybe for milk)
3) Get paid more at work. If they want me managing timelines and projects on top of what I’m already doing, I’m gonna need a raise. And benefits. Fortunately they love me, so I think this will not be difficult.
4) Call Drs about a bill that needs insurance adjustment (never went through insurance)
5) Don’t spend on eating out (only using GrubHib gift card remaining balance)
6) Get outside every day
7) Stretch goal: Declutter and bring Sh…shtuff to donate. Setting the bar low, if I even bring one little bag of stuff, that’s a win.

I have a weird and perverse mind that most often reacts to setting goals by immediately not doing anything to achieve them and/or actively sabotaging myself. I generally try to stick with very vague aims in an effort to "trick" myself. Nonetheless, I'm trying a few things out that I've been half-trying to incorporate into life for a couple of months now - February's focus is on bedtime routine.

1. Clear table every evening (I spent the best part of four hours over the past four days doing this - it was pretty bad and I really don't want to let it get like that again)
2. Switch on digital wellbeing bedtime mode on phone by half-eight at the latest
3. Do 5-10 minutes of yoga
4. Read physical book
5. Listen to sleep meditation after switching light off

I can relate to this.  I’m not sure why, but I have a natural desire to procrastinate as much as I can, and my brain has developed some pretty sneaky ways to talk me out of getting things accomplished.  It’s weird because I actually really enjoy working hard at something and finishing a job, but yeah I definitely do better when there some kind of outside pressure on me rather than just holding myself to account.

@Moonwaves @JAYSLOL you might be Obligers or Rebels based on Gretchen Rubin's categories.
https://quiz.gretchenrubin.com/

There are strategies on her website tailored to each of the tendencies. Maybe there is something that helps you there?

I'm an Obliger...great at meeting external expectations but not internal expectations. One thing that works for me sometimes for some things is to set an intention. Then just let it summer in the back of my mind. Revisit it in a month, 6 weeks, 6 months...whatever. Often, the intention will be fulfilled or in progress. Not always, but sometimes.

Feb goals:

Finish 1 book
Scan many photos and papers
Move house
ETA: sub goal: eat down the pantry

Check! WOOHOO! Substantial raise, 401k, and an HSA contribution. AND sick/pto leave!!!
4) Call Drs about a bill that needs insurance adjustment (never went through insurance)
Check. We may have hit our deductible so might no longer owe anything.
5) Don’t spend on eating out (only using GrubHib gift card remaining balance)
6) Get outside every day
Good so far!
7) Stretch goal: Declutter and bring Sh…shtuff to donate. Setting the bar low, if I even bring one little bag of stuff, that’s a win.

So no frivolous spend in February - no new running clothes (ah!), no eating out (this one should be easy enough), no "stuff". Just my regularly scheduled monthly expenses.

So far so good, I only bought lots of food to freeze so my grocrery budget took a hit and I'm not sure I can stay under the whole month, but it'll pay off in the future. Alos bought some vacuum sealer bags and rolls, but that's it. Been adding a few things to my Amazon cart and saving them "for later", which means I'll probably just forget about them - win.

That said, I have family coming over for the upcoming 3-days week-end and we'll do a couple day trips to ski. So yeah, that'll mean ski pass, gear rental and probably dining out 🙄.

2. Diet. Been doing it since mid-January. I lost about 1.5kgs, mostly water weight I think, but I know it always takes a few weeks before it starts working. Lost 1.8kgs so far this month and enjoying every minute of it. I'll start reintroducing carbs on the week after next (see ski week-end above lol).

This was interesting. I tested as rebel but there's a lot of obliger in there. I found it hard to answer the questions and found myself sometimes having to choose between what I have done in the past and what I now try to do having noticed problem areas.  It nearly felt like I was giving aspirational answers but the old habits answers aren't always true anymore either. Really interesting.

Glad it was interesting, at least. It reinforced for me that I need to have an accountability partner or something. That's one of the great things about the monthly goals threads. It feels like outside accountability and activates my internal drive to "oblige".

Enjoyed that quiz. I am an obliger. Which doesn’t surprise me in the least. I’ve always needed accountability even for things I want to do.

I'm getting a workout in the garden but I'd really like to add more walking -we'll see. - For now - I'm good with the garden workout. Decided to go to the beach for a walk - twice a week. Starting this Monday.

ONGOING

SPRING GARDENING

Finish seeding veggies and herbs and flowers - buy lettuce plantlings - working on it - still working on it - good progress!

Shed Area and Potting Area and Behind the Shed - made good progress this week!
More clean up and organizing - in progress

Weeding, mulching and composting - in progress - made good progress this week!

Three CREATIVE PROJECTS - (JAN) continued into February
Finish the Garden Gate and Garden Decor Project (25% done) - Getting there! Slow progress - but I am enjoying the process.
Finish the Rose Quartz Pendant and Chain - 90% done.
Egyptian Jewelry Set - Necklace and Earrings - no progress yet.

PAPER CLUTTER - FEB GOAL
Tackle four stacks of paper (Study) - No Progress yet - spring gardening is wiping me out - I'll catch up on rainy days:).

DE-CLUTTER and general SPRING CLEANING [/b] - No Progress yet -
Do six drawers - spice, knife, bathroom, and three clothes drawers.

- Working on it!

Stay focused and don't forget to have fun - good luck with your Feb goals everyone:).

Updates - see above.
Not quite as good as I'd hoped - but all in all - moving right along. I can see the end in sight of a few of the garden projects and even the creative projects.  I am becoming more determined to knock out several projects this month.
The garden is beginning to look like a fun, colorful spring garden, the veggies are doing well and I'm almost finished with planting and seeding flowers and herbs. I made quite a few changes, we cut back the passionfruit vine that was turning into a garden thug, harvested my first plantain, making my first plantain chips and sweet plantain, created a new seating area in the shade and trimmed the bananas and papayas.
I'm actually looking forward to the de-cluttering projects in the house - just waiting for a rainy day to rest my weary bones from the garden chores and schlepping around 25-pound stones.

One bright spot, I added new creative projects (well, yes - eye-roll:) which turned out oh so pretty which made me happy. It is what I always do. I find myself adding projects before even finishing the current projects. Anyway, I did a few really fun, cobalt blue glass bottles and windchime project(s) - that are 'almost' (95%) finished.
The trouble is I have more ideas than I have time and energy.
We'll see how far I get by the EOM.

Today was mostly a planting day and I set up a new "raised container" garden for the herbs and veggies that need more shade to survive our brutal summers. Cleaned a couple of outdoor cushions and fixed-up and re-organized a couple of other small garden corners.
I hope to finish planting tomorrow, seed a few flowers, herbs and lettuce and hope that Mr. R. will help by moving a large potted palm and laying a new border in the tropical garden, we also need to deal with the compost.
We'll see how it goes - it is a big garden...

1. Clear table every evening Cleared table every single evening. This one feels so, so good. I mean, it's not clear at the moment but that's because I finally blocked the jumpers I knit for my nephews and they're not dry yet. I've needed to do that for weeks and having a clear table definitely helped.

2. Switch on digital wellbeing bedtime mode on phone by half-eight at the latest Have remembered to do this on several evenings, but also forgotten it on several evenings. Not quite a habit yet. Even if it wasn't half eight, at least I did switch it on as soon as I remembered.

3. Do 5-10 minutes of yoga Managed to do this twice.

4. Read physical book Did this most nights but one or two I was so tired I had closed my eyes before I even picked up my book and then just ended up turning off the light. The book I'm reading at the moment is huge, though, and it takes effort to lift it up and hold it. By next week, I should be on a new book and I think this will be easier to do.

5. Listen to sleep meditation after switching light off I have listened to either a sleep meditation or a podcast most nights. Even with the podcasts I don't hear much more than the first ten or fifteen minutes so it's almost the same.

And adding another one that I had forgotten I wanted to start doing but only actually did once in January.
6. Read a story to myself out loud in German (I may add French and Irish to this at some point, but for now, I have a big book of fairytales in German and I'll go with that)

I'm ready to roll:) into February with remaining and ongoing projects and a few new goals.

NEW GOALS - Health and Diet
PILATES - 3 to 5 days a week - 20 to 30 minutes each, before breakfast. - Ugh - FAIL SO FAR
FOOD - go meatless minimum twice a week. - Easy - SUCCESS SO FAR
Serve raw veggies, fresh steamed veggies, and fresh organic fruit at least once a day - all month long. - OK - but needs improvement - more salads!
Try one or several of the GRITS RECIPES I've had forever - or - get rid of them by the end of the month. - Oops - forgot - but did try two other new dishes.
Start using the HP MONITOR at least once a day in January to get a better idea of my true average. - Doc said to track three times a week - SUCCESS!

New - get garden help and professional tree service - NO PROGRESS YET!

MORE SPRING GARDEN SUCCESS!
1. We tackled the compost area together - all done!
2. Mr. R. did a great job adding a new border and a small stacked stone wall! Looks exactly like I imagined - love it:).
3. It turned out to be a perfectly lovely potager, mixed garden bed of herbs, flowers and veggies.
I added a big pot of Rosemary in the center and placed a terracotta window box freshly planted with pink Geraniums on top of the new garden wall.
4. I've slowly cleaned up and cleared the potting area and planted a new herb border along the pathway to the shed.

TODAY
1. I finally cleared off the planting table for the first time in months - the table is currently soaking overnight to be scrubbed tomorrow. To be dried in the sun tomorrow, repair some damaged areas and paint it in hopes it will last another season or two.
2. Puttered about, making changes here and there, and planting flowers and herbs.
3. I finished The Container Herb Garden - both for the sun lovers and the shade lovers. YAY!

Now I am down to the last plantlings of four Leek and four Spearmint.
I hope to at least finish cleaning, repairing and painting the table tomorrow.

RE-CYCLE - UP-CYCLE Art projects - de-cluttering - organizing
Yesterday I sorted through my remaining stash of glass bottles lingering in the yard. I've slowly used them up for garden projects and I've shared a bunch with my neighbor for her windchime projects.
Tomorrow is re-cycle day so that is my deadline for what I will keep and what I will give away (most of it). My neighbor will be doing a show in March so she's happy to get about 35 bottles. I'll keep about 10 for future projects and recycle the ones that have lost their color.

HOPIUM:)
Maybe I can manage the table renovation:), the bottle clean-up, and wash-up job, and cutting back a Passionflower vine gone rogue between 8am and 2pm.
By then I'll be ready to sip a chilled glass of wine in the shade of our newly created seating area. I may appeal to my neighbor for moral, I mean w(h)ine support.
We have not moved the monster palm into the new area yet - I'm excited to see how it will all look in another month. I think I'll move some of the ferns into this area as well.

Part I of V of the spring gardening is nearing the end - we'll see how it goes.

1. Well, I can officially check off my February Spring Gardening - SWEET - that means - I can move onto my March Spring Gardening list, which is just as long. DONE - but I must continue since this is an ongoing project (s). Nevertheless, FEB goals have been met!
2. Creative projects are also DONE. Not exactly as I had in mind:) but that's OK. Projects got shuffled and while I actually did quite a bit more than I had planned, the original projects are still not finished. I'll play a little for the rest of the month and carry over the original projects which are in varying stages of completion to be finished in March.

I'll need to do an updated list for the remainder of the month before I totally lose sight of failures and accomplishments and then re-shuffle with new priorities. All in all, I'm more than happy with the results but in the future, I will set up my list in order of priority to me.

We dealt with two huge brush piles today, weeded yesterday and worked on general maintenance and upkeep. Today we composted two more beds and I finished with raised container planting. Sowed flowers and lettuce and planted mints, took cuttings from a Salvia (Golden Pineapple Sage).
Last night I had fun with more glass bottle garden art and today we had a meatless lunch (an item on my list of goals), potato pancakes and homemade apple compote.
Hopefully, the rest of the month will be just as productive. I am enjoying the creative projects, they make me smile.

It occurred to me this morning how meditative planting and relaxing my garden really is. I'm always envious of people talking about their meditation but I realized this morning while I was at my planting bench talking to the plants that my mind was in a different, restful state.
It is the same with some of my creative projects, I lose myself in them inducing a different state of mind.

Congrats @Rosy --seems like you've accomplished a lot this month!

(and I definitely agree about gardening and creative projects. Even though I also try to keep a steady meditation practice, those two activities rank high on my list of 'alternative ways to meditate'..:)

Here’s my Feb goals:

1) Get the will FINALLY done. Will cost $$ for a lawyer but we know how much and I just need to pay and finish the paperwork.
Got the money just need to make the payment!
2) Spend under $500 for groceries. I’ve got a pretty solid plan to get us through next week without needing to shop (except maybe for milk)
So far so good. But spent $150 this week between Costco and Aldi.
3) Get paid more at work. If they want me managing timelines and projects on top of what I’m already doing, I’m gonna need a raise. And benefits. Fortunately they love me, so I think this will not be difficult.
Check!
Well we spent on gyros. Our favorite place isn’t on GH, and DH made the decision while I worked late on Friday
6) Get outside every day
Still good so far!
7) Stretch goal: Declutter and bring Sh…shtuff to donate. Setting the bar low, if I even bring one little bag of stuff, that’s a win.
@Serendip that recipe sounds interesting!

@Rosy --it was way more luxurious than anything we would've sprung for! Bonus is that he will get paid for his contribution too.

@Britan --it was from the cookbook One Pot/Pan/Planet and it was very interesting (found the recipe online and will place below)
I will definitely make it again and change up the herbs used, it calls for large amounts of herbs which you can vary according to taste preference (I made preserved lemons basically just to try out this recipe..variety of flavours is hugely satisfying to my Taurean nature)

It will be good to make again when my herb garden is producing

1. No spend. I spent A LOT in December and January due to being home abroad with my family, and I feel like I need a cleansing break now. So no frivolous spend in February - no new running clothes (ah!), no eating out (this one should be easy enough), no "stuff". Just my regularly scheduled monthly expenses.

Lost 1.8kgs so far this month and enjoying every minute of it. I'll start reintroducing carbs on the week after next (see ski week-end above lol).

February is in.

1. No spend. Meh. I didn't buy anything *frivolous* but that last minute ski week-end cost me some money. Grocery budget kinda exploded (includes some non-ski-week-end staples that I hadn't noticed I was almost out of, but mostly, yeah - feeding 4 people, including 2 kids, for 4 days is a lot more expensive than just me, WHO KNEW? lol). Also had to buy tire chains, ski pants and of course pay for gas, gear rental and ski lifts.

At least I had a blast, I got to spend time doing fun stuff with my family and loved every minute of it. No regrets.

So I guess that's a near-miss? Starting over with a no-spend month in March to make up for it.

2. Diet. Lost 2.8kgs in February. Not as much as I would have liked, but it went well and slow and steady is good. I didn't really diet during the ski week-end (come on!), but I was still careful and kept my fasting window. Still enjoying the process.

Congrats to all of you who reached your goals this month! Onto March!

rugs placed, adjusted, moved to other rooms & re-placed

hardware store for sundries

I can (barly) cook, but only have 1 plastic bowl and one spoon to eat with. To be continued next month...

Final update: February Goals!

-daily yoga: yes--success! And I'm feeling stronger but also calmer
-daily meditation yes! And jazzed about it
-daily poetry reading..a partial success--way more poetry in my life this year compared to last but my daily reading is more of a 'sporadic, near-daily contemplation'

-10-15 no spend days: 10 days--success but could've been a bit more diligent as I bought some food out after work which was due to not being prepared
-save minimum $1000 into RRSP: $1400--success!

-one new recipe weekly : We made a pulled pork pizza with leftovers..tasty. Also I tried making a stuffed naan for the first time (filled with grated potato, bokchoi and mozzarella) and served with spicy dal. A bit messy to get the dough right but received rave reviews from my SO
-apply for at least one creative opportunity (art show or residency): nope
-three nice experiences or date nights with my SO (he’s had a tough time recently): yes, throughout the month we managed this
-clean espresso machine: done
-tidy/organize basement: nope
-grow sprouts/micro greens regularly: yes and eating them on everything. I love not dealign with greens from the grocery store..no clamshell plastic containers!
