2 HORRIBLE addictions.
« on: December 28, 2017, 10:54:08 AM »
So I've looked into the financial part of this a while ago, but just now reminded myself of it after looking into energy drink addictions. Evidently, it's a real thing and according to caffeineinformer.com I am addicted. This, coupled with my pack a day smoking habit, I am spending around $330/month. That's over $4,000 per year on ENERGY DRINKS and CIGARETTES!! HOLY F#@*ING SH&T!! I think that deserves more than a regular face punch. lol
I have decided that is GOING to change! From what I read, withdrawal symptoms last up to 2 months (lack of energy, headaches, mood swings, flu-like symptoms, and more). So these, along with the withdrawal symptoms of quitting smoking won't be easy! Maybe I should just be a wussy pants and conquer one at a time? Let's not plan on that!
So who else has these unhealthy, horrible, expensive addictions they want to kick with me?
LETS GO!

While I don't share your addictions, I did lose my dad to COPD almost 11 years ago, so I wanted to offer you encouragement on kicking the cigarette habit. Please, do it for yourself AND for the people who love you!

Several years ago my doctor asked me to stop caffeine for various reasons. I was only doing one cup of coffee at the time but it was still hard. Instead of cold turkey I opted to cut down to half a cup of caf and half a cup of decaf. The next TEN days or so were rough. I didn’t get tired of withdrawal headaches as I expected, but I was the world’s grumpiest bitch. I was so bad-tempered I surprised myself. Thankfully it went away. Later I cut out the other half cup but at that point I was suffering from major sleep-deprivation and possibly withdrawal from a prescription med, so I didn’t notice a thing. ;-)

Best of luck. It is the right thing to do but it won’t be easy.

It's going to be painful, might as well get it over with at one time.   Kind of like getting into a pool full of cold water.  It's better to just jump in rather than ease in.

I’m addicted to sugar so Jan 1, I’m going cold turkey.   I did it once before and the withdrawal was awful.   I’m not looking forward to it again

It's worse than that. You have to earn and pay tax on that $4,000 first. So pre-tax it costs you a fair bit more than that (sorry!)

I think I'm giving up alcohol and soda.  Alcohol is something I only drank on the weekend or on school breaks, but I think I want to go without for most of the year save for a couple special occasions.  Gonna limit myself to 6 drinking days per year, I think.  I want to give up soda completely.  Wish me luck!

Good luck to the others!!

Good for you for tackling these issues. I quit smoking a long time ago. It took me a year of trying before it stuck. So even if you mess up at some point just keep trying over and over again and it will stick.

Just posting to offer you encouragement TonyV.   The benefits go beyond the dollars.  I lost my mom at a young age to lung cancer.

You can do it!

I quit smoking 20 years ago and it was one of the hardest things and one of the best things I have done for myself.  You may not be looking for advice but once you stop, don’t let your addiction turn to food.  Or at least stock up on fruits and vegetables to have healthy things around.  I remember I literally could not stop eating and returned to smoking several times before sticking to it finally.

Right now my addictions are sugar and coffee.  While I won’t be eliminating them, I need to limit them in a mindful way.  I am not looking forward to the withdraws.

Good luck! I just finished reading The Power of Habit which has a lot of sage advice about how habits are formed and can be changed. It might be a helpful read.
