I just got $40 from a class action settlement, for taking the time to send in a claim form. I don't always make a claim, but I've started a class action page in my notes to keep track of the notices and dates to check back. In this case, keeping track also helped me remember that this was something I signed up for.

I received this one as well.

I also submitted feedback with our phone provider (Fi) about a $14 charge that shouldn't have been there. They credited me back & ensured it wouldn't happen again this month.

Yesterday we got DH signed up for his commute benefits for his new job. (Basically, he can buy transit fare with pretax money.)

The system is ridiculous, and I'm pretty sure it's a case of the employer, not the end user, being the paying customer. Besides that the website is super clunky, they promise to fulfill an order made before April 10 by May 20. If you wait for April 11, it's June 20. He managed to do the stuff after 9pm yesterday. Turns out they're on the east coast, so he gets to wait for June. Maybe I should cross-post to Mustachian People Problems.

The good news is, he's in very comfortable biking distance of the new office, and it's conveniently on my way to work, so we can easily carpool if we need to. It may be a while before he needs to take transit much.

Our CPA retired and moved to Hawaii, leaving no successor. The other CPA I know IRL also retired, and I'd heard his successor's fees were astronomical, and all done remotely, which isn't our bag, at least for a first-time visit. I asked a trusted friend, and her person wasn't taking new clients. I told the tax preparer's assistant that we'd be fine filing an extension, as we were pretty sure we'd be getting a refund. Then my friend must have said something to the tax preparer, because a "last-minute" appointment opened up the first week of April. We took the appointment and pulled together all our crap.

Our old CPA normally sent out a packet that really helps with our prep. The new person doesn't use one for the first visit. I used the spreadsheet format that I always use and of we went. She was thrilled with the spreadsheets and our preparation. She got our return done in less than a week, so we were able to file on time. Best of all, we are getting $2k back, even after we paid her bill. Yippee!

On a related note, my walking partner and I took an extra long walk yesterday. We needed a restroom, but there was nothing nearby. Our friend, the newly retired CPA, (and his long-ago FIRE'd CPA wife) live only a few blocks away. We called, then stopped by their house. After taking care of business, we got to congratulate him on his first retired April 15th Tax Day.
