Write a FI-inspired song in time for Halloween
« on: October 13, 2017, 04:17:37 AM »
Inspired by Financial Independence Week Europe, I wrote a few FI-related songs for singing around the campfire.  I believe the financial independence should have a song-writing and singing community, similar to the Filk community for science fiction and fantasy.  I want to capture the spirit of FI in music and lyrics, and be able to sing it together with others.

Here's the challenge:

  • Write a FI-inspired song.  Description below.
  • Post it here: text, YouTube video, SoundCloud, whatever
  • Scare all the trick-or-treaters with your FI-inspired parody of MC Hammer's "Can't Touch This", called "Don't Buy That!"

What type of song?  It should be about a Financial, FI, RE or related topic.  Write about what you'll do when you retire early, how to save money, what makes you happy now, what you're changing about your life, how to pay off a mortgage fast, ways to save on taxes, why minimalism is the best -ism ever, travel hacking, orphan goats that you'll adopt after FIRE, tec.  Re-use a melody from a known song or create  your own.  For inspiration, here's a song written about the Chautauqua conference.   At FIWE, we created songs about, e.g. "We all save all the money that we earn" (Yellow Submarine), "Chunk of Money" (Drunken Sailor), "One More Year To Work" (One More River To Cross), and "My Stock Price" (Edelweiss).

And a bonus question: what should these songs be called?  Suggestions so far:
  • CampFIRE songs
  • FIndie music
  • FIlk music
  • <your suggestion here>

Snowball
(tune: “Stewball”, Peter Paul and Mary; lyrics: Able was I ERE; guitar chords)

Snowball was a method
And I wish it were mine
He’ll help you to pay off
Your loans in no time

It’s worth more than silver
It’s worth more than gold
Cuz compounding interest
Is forceful and old

The malls they were crowded
And snowball was there
They got lots of presents
And lace underwear

Away-ay out yonder
Ahead of them all
Came a prancing and dancing
My noble snowball

Well I bought a new car
And warm holiday
If I’d bet on old snowball
I’d be a free man today

The hoot owl he hollers
And the turtledove moans
I’m a poor boy in trouble
Cuz I took out a loan

Snowball was a payment
And I wish he were mine
If only I’d used him
I could retire on time

I may have been found guilty for abusing a Christmas tune a couple of years ago...

https://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/welcome-to-the-forum/a-christmas-carol-(mmm-style)/

God rest ye merry 'stachians
who save up all their pay
The FIRE we desire
won’t come this Christmas day
Invest the lot to grow your pot
And hear us when we say
Oh tidings of compounded joy, compounded joy
Oh tidings of compounded joy

From Sydney to Vancouver
Landladies and Landlords
We pay our costs and interest
And hope the values soar
Before we sell and cash our chips
So we can cut the cord
Oh tidings of compounded joy, compounded joy
Oh tidings of compounded joy

In ETF’s our faith is placed
We’ve no one else to blame
The stockmarket is falling
Keep buying all the same
How that in New York City
Lies fortune and lies fame
Oh tidings of compounded joy, compounded joy
Oh tidings of compounded joy

Fear not then, said the Mustache Man
Let’s reach a greater height
This day’s the day you’ll go and set
Your savings rate alight
To free all those who trust one day
In FIRE’s own delight
Oh tidings of compounded joy, compounded joy
Oh tidings of compounded joy

The forumites a listening
Kept in the back of mind
Delaying Christmas purchases
For pay-back in kind
We smiled and waved at the excess
With healthy pockets lined
Oh tidings of compounded joy, compounded joy
Oh tidings of compounded joy

With Christmas cheer our bellies full
Of salmon, bream and cray
We’ve saved enough to pay the loans
And never went astray
So now we spend on what we like
And deal with come what may
Oh tidings of compounded joy, compounded joy
Oh tidings of compounded joy

We watch the flow of dividends
We all pick up the pace
We bank all of the rental cheques
And cruise to end of race
You cross the tape and raise your glass
And FIRE’s what you face
Oh tidings of compounded joy, compounded joy
Oh tidings of compounded joy

Awesome song!  Thanks for the link, there is more gold behind that linked thread...

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
