What I'm doing to try and keep weight down in 2019:

  • Many meals throughout the day.
  • High protein meals where possible (more satiating).
  • Chewy, high-fibre food, so it takes longer to eat (more satiating).
  • Big breakfast to fill me up until lunch time (wholegrain baguette or porridge bowl).
  • Lots of coffee.
  • Zero-sugar soft drinks (Coke Zero, etc).
  • Sugar-free chewing gum.
  • Eating as slowly as possible.
  • Keeping mentally or physically occupied so I don't think about food.
  • Strength exercises to increase muscle mass. More muscles = more calories burned when at rest.
  • Get lots of sleep and do some mindfulness.
  • Use mobile calorie tracking app religiously.
  • Avoid having calorie-dense foods in the house.

My weight at the moment isn't too bad (65 kg weight, 173 cm height), but I'd prefer it to be headed down rather than up.

Over the past few years, my weight was slowly but steadily rising. In August 2018, I heard about Diet Bet and decided to give it a try. Since then, I’ve lost nearly 40 lbs. I have another 54 lbs to lose to be in a healthy BMI. I’d love to get there in 2019, although I know that it will be a stretch for me.

I’ve lost the weight so far by doing intermittent fasting on a 16:8 schedule (it’s my natural eating pattern so it works for me), tracking calories, and increasing my daily movement.

August 2018: 236.8
December 31: 198.8
January 31: 191.8 (I was hoping to be a bit further along, but my weight went up and plateaued for a while before I managed to drop weight this month. Then again, progress is progress and I’ll take what I can get.)
February 28th: 189.2
March 31st: 184 (I’ve now gotten solidly beyond my 50 lb goal! Very excited about that. I also learned that I’m an inch taller than I used to be so my next goal of getting down to an overweight BMI is even closer. Just 4 more lbs until I’m considered overweight!)

Goal for April: 176 (I know it’s a lofty goal given my recent slow down, but I would just love to hit the 60 lb mark)

March weigh-in:

11/26/2017     253.4
12/31/2017     242.6
01/31/2018     234.8
02/28/2018     224.8
03/31/2018     220.0
04/29/2018     214.4
05/31/2018     209.4
06/30/2018     206.2
07/28/2018     201.6      27.4% BF
08/31/2018     193.8      25.7% BF
09/29/2018     191.2      25.1% BF
10/31/2018     187.6      24.3% BF
11/30/2018     186.0      24.0% BF
12/31/2018     186.6      24.0% BF
01/31/2019     181.2      23.0% BF
02/28/2019     181.6.     23.1% BF
03/31/2019     183.0      23.4% BF

At the end of last month I decided to switch to maintenance for a while and it went generally okay this month, though it is probably a bit to soon to tell and definitely still a work in progress.

My goal for the end of the year is somewhere between maintaining my weight and losing 20-25(ish) lbs.  Google tells me the top end of a healthy weight for my height is 140 lbs, even when I was in the best shape of my life (played very competitive soccer and volleyball in high school, with weight lifting) I was pretty steadily in the 145 range.

Historical weights
7/2017: 200 lbs (6 weeks pregnant)
03/23/18: 215 lbs (40 weeks pregnant)
04/03/18: 192.8 lbs
05/06/18: 181.2 lbs
06/14/18: 172.8 lbs
08/06/18: 168.8 lbs
09/21/18: 165.4 lbs
10/07/18: 162.2 lbs
12/07/18: 157.? lbs

2019 log in
01/09/19: 161.6 lbs
01/28/19: 160.4 lbs

02/01/19: 160.0 lbs
02/28/19: 157.4 lbs

03/07/19: 157.3 lbs
03/13/19: 155.8 lbs
03/14/19: 159.4 lbs
03/21/19: 157.7 lbs
03/25/19: 154.4 lbs

04/01/19: 157.2 lbs

I had to go out of town for work all of last week.  I checked my weight before I left and was really excited to see that I had finally jumped under the 157 mark.  This morning I am back at 157, I feel like I am never going to get to and stay under 157.  Considering where I was at a year ago (and for many years before that) I am really happy with that weight but I was/am also really looking forward to the day that when some random medical professional decides to calculate my BMI and I fall in the "healthy" range.

Hopping back in this thread for a bit. I was down to 179.0 and bopped up to 181.8 after being out of town for work last week.

180ish is a pretty comfortable maintenance weight for me. I look fantastic a pound or two lower (can easily tell the difference in the mirror) however it’s just way harder to maintain any less than 180 as I stil around 7%-8% BF around there. Also, I’m fine to have a mild cheat meal on the weekend, a bowl of lower calorie ice cream at some point during the week, and maybe a few extra snacks here and there. I lift weights heavy twice a week and run about 20 miles a week, so that helps keep things in check.

All that being said, I signed up for my first 5K in about 5 weeks, and I want to do everything possible to get my best time. I’d REALLY like to get down to 175 lbs if possible. I’m not prepared to be entirely miserable to do it, but if I can just pick up the self control a few more notches I should be fine. My wife already prepares, measures, balances every single meal, so that part is all super easy.

@goinganon That is IMPRESSIVE! You have been making awesome progress!!

@Slow & Steady At my current weight of 141lbs, I am still in the overweight portion of the BMI chart. I would need to hit 127lbs to be a "normal weight". The lowest I have hit is 130lbs and I was definitely still pretty rounded although I felt it was a pretty acceptable weight for me.

Missed last week's update. Did great last week and then this past week was pretty flat- had friends in town over the weekend so I was a little less vigilant. This week is my first week back to work after a 6 week sabbatical... my job offers a lot of food and snacks at work so the temptation to snack all day is high. This means I have to be more disciplined compared to when I was at home, where we don't generally keep snack food on hand so any time I wanted to snack I had to go through the effort of making something.

That being said, I was working for the first half of the time I've been logging here and still dropped over 10 pounds so I think I'm good!

New low today and that on a Monday, amazing! :)

222.8lbs, 14.8 to go.
Hit 221.1 one day but promptly bumped back up. This morning was 222.6 so slowly but surely making progress.

I am traveling for work this week so it will be tough for me to keep it up but it can obviously be done. Running a 5k in the Florida heat on Thursday will help keep me on track.

Was 220.9 yesterday morning but didn't have the greatest day as far as eating so will probably bump back up. Still got my eye on that 208 target.

220.0 this morning! Got 12 more lbs to lose in the next 4 weeks so I might just miss that goal. I'm really hopeful to be 215 or below though which is my lowest weight in over 10 years.

This last month has been completely hectic around my house. We bought a "new to us" car and had our third child. she was in the hospital for the first week and half so that made things even harder.

I am ready to get back up on this horse now though. time to shed off another 10 lbs or more.

Congrats on everyone's progress up to this point!

I have finally entered the Overweight BMI category!! This is the lowest I’ve been in well over a decade. At my highest, I was in the Class 3 BMI range so this is a huge accomplishment for me. I still have a long way to go, but at least I’m heading in the right direction.

9/2018 - 240
Jan 31  - 220: Finally lost the other 20 pounds I set in September.
Feb 6   - 219
Apr 18  - 198: Under my 200 goal :)

I'm in. 6' 2" Male mid 30s. I weighed around 265 lbs in April - May 2018 but then got more serious in the fall. Met my previous goal of 220 in the last couple weeks. New Goal: 200 lbs by end of June (Accomplished). Next Goal: Get into a healthy BMI weight range of 194 and under and stay there :)

I've been elliptically almost every day now for 45-60 mins and restricting calories too. 16/8 seems to be my natural eating schedule too so that helps. Overall, I feel so much better and have lots more energy. I'm afraid I may be OCDing a bit since I have been doing multiple daily weighings and have been wanting to try not eating for a day or two but stay hydrated to make the weight come off faster. Very happy to be in the "Overweight" category instead of Obese.

I have finally entered the Overweight BMI category!! This is the lowest I’ve been in well over a decade. At my highest, I was in the Class 3 BMI range so this is a huge accomplishment for me. I still have a long way to go, but at least I’m heading in the right direction.
Congrats Goinganon,  that is fantastic progress!  You must feel so much better. I am trying to get there by the end of 2019.

1/11/18 - 96kg       211.5 lbs       BMI 38.5    Class II Obesity
1/12/18 - 94kg       207 lbs
1/01/19 - 92kg       203 lbs
1/02/19 - 90.1kg    198.5 lbs
1/03/19 - 89kg       196
7/4/19  -  88.5kg    195
1/5/19 -  87kg        192 lbs         BMI 34.9     Class I Obesity  :D

I added a few extra numbers in here for this month. I'm now only Class I Obese :). I didn't log a weight last month because I was on holidays...after 2 weeks of exercise and really good diet, I lost only 0.5kg. I hope it was because I put on muscle, my clothes were looser.

So in total I've lost 9kg, with 12.5 to go to get to 74.5kg whereupon I will no longer be obese.

219.5 this morning but I'm a little sceptical. We will see if it continues or if I bump back up.

218.4, found another nice stride. We fly to Europe next Thursday which was my goal date for my 208lb goal. Won't make that but i might get sub 215 which makes me ecstatic.

My goal for the end of the year is somewhere between maintaining my weight and losing 20-25(ish) lbs.  Google tells me the top end of a healthy weight for my height is 140 lbs, even when I was in the best shape of my life (played very competitive soccer and volleyball in high school, with weight lifting) I was pretty steadily in the 145 range.

Historical weights
7/2017: 200 lbs (6 weeks pregnant)
03/23/18: 215 lbs (40 weeks pregnant)
04/03/18: 192.8 lbs
05/06/18: 181.2 lbs
06/14/18: 172.8 lbs
08/06/18: 168.8 lbs
09/21/18: 165.4 lbs
10/07/18: 162.2 lbs
12/07/18: 157.? lbs

01/09/19: 161.6 lbs
02/01/19: 160.0 lbs
03/07/19: 157.3 lbs
04/01/19: 157.2 lbs
05/02/19: 157.4 lbs

I guess you could say that I a really killing it with my goal of maintaining!

I would love to get into the 140s but it doesn't seem like that is in the cards without changing my priorities and those 10-15 lbs are definitely not on the top of my priority list right now.

January 31: 191.8
February 28th: 189.2
March 31st: 184

My weight went a little crazy for a while. It dropped down to 176 for about a week then jumped up to 183. No clue why. Thankfully it seems to be on the downswing again.

Oooooo...this is EXCITING!!!

@happy It feels amazing to move down to the next range on the BMI charts.

A few years ago, looking at my BMI was finally what opened my eyes. I had gradually put on tiny amounts year after year and all of a sudden, I was officially OBESE.

I am only 5ft tall with small bones so it doesn't take a whole lot of pounds to fill up my frame. I have now dropped enough that I am "just" overweight. My goal is to get to 129 lbs. Which would be the lowest I have weighed in a long time.

I just did the math and I would still be "overweight".  I will have to get down to 127lbs to actually hit a " normal" weight. Yikes.

I won't blame the BMI charts though. I've been at 130 before and while it was hard enough to maintain that, I KNOW I wasn't slender at that weight. While I looked pretty good, I was definitely still well-padded so "overweight" was an apt definition. A few pounds less would have helped. 125lbs would be a nice weight for me. Not thin but only slightly padded. Given that I am turning 40, I guess I would call that a "matronly" figure haha!

9/2018  - 240
Jan 31   - 220: Finally lost the other 20 pounds I set in September.
Feb 06   - 219
Apr 18   - 198: Under my 200 goal :)
May 10  - 190: Hit two new goals: 190 and being in the Normal BMI category.

Next Goals
  • Stay in the Normal BMI range of 150 - 194 pounds.
  • Keep learning about fitness and specifically building muscle.
  • Build muscle through weight training. Despite losing 75 pounds, I think I've lost some strength and want to regain some.

Background

I've been ellipticaling almost every day now for 45-60 mins and restricting calories too. 16/8 seems to be my natural eating schedule too so that helps. Overall, I feel so much better and have lots more energy. I'm afraid I may be OCDing a bit since I have been doing multiple daily weighins and have been wanting to try not eating for a day or two but stay hydrated to make the weight come off faster. Very happy to be in the "Overweight" category instead of Obese.

I'll be joining this thread sometime in the spring. I'm currently 6 months pregnant but I do plan on working out and not gaining a ton of weight. So far I'm right within range. I'm hoping after delivery I'll only have 15 or so pounds to lose.

Ok I'm ready to jump in.

@sixup I find the very drastic weight drops tends to be just a fleeting tease. I weigh myself daily so am used to the fluctuations and find my true weight is usually a pound or so higher than my lowest recorded weight.

@haypug16 Welcome!!! Good for you for jumping on the bandwagon so quickly!

Hey elaine, yeah it seems like the May 4 drop was an anomaly but has reverted back on track at this point.

180 was my original goal so I'm pretty happy to get there but I might need to go to 170 to be actually lean. Sitting around 13% body fat via navy method.

@sixup congrats on hitting your 180 goal weight!!

@AK that is so great! I have the daily exercise thing down pat and I enjoy it. But I am still struggling a little with the eating healthy part. I do OK at my regular daily meals (low cals and lot of veggies) but have noticed whenever I indulge, I avoid the veggies. Today I was at a party with loads of fresh veggies and delicious looking healthy food. I ended up eating some of that. Than a lot more fried chicken wings and the other higher cal foods. And about 3 more cookies than I planned along with a couple of cups of watermelon...after I was stuffed. Frustrating. Social meals are rough for me.

I’m so glad I found this. I though 2017 was the year that I finally learned how to eat healthy and maintain my weight but in 2018 I gained 20 pounds. :(. I have decided to give up sugar and make sure I’m getting 64 ounces of water a day to get back to basics. My starting weight is 158.8 and my goal weight is 140. I am 5’3” so based off he BMI charts I could go even lower but this has always felt like a comfortable weight for me.

My weight loss has been slow but at least it’s going in the right direction. My weight today was 149.  I have been stuck at 149 for 3 weeks now which is frustrating to say the least. We leave on vacation in 6 days so I am going to try really hard not to gain too much on vacation considering how hard it has been to lose it.

Social outings are my downfall too. I love fried food and chicken wings too! I usually put on 5-7 pounds between lots of beer, soda, and food and then have to wait 3-5 days for it to come off. However, I tend to do this occasionally and not every week so it's in moderation and is fun. If I overeat one day, I'll undereat the next day or another to balance it out but it sure is hard.

I have sucked at this so far this year. I'm "only" up 2.6 pounds from my original post...but my goal is to lose 40. Work has been a huge source of busy-ness and stress so far this year, and I have gotten off track with my health. I'm running a half marathon in just under two weeks and I'm nowhere near where I planned to be. Oh well; I'll do my best and move on. Two big things just finished up at work last week so I should have a breather here to reset and refocus.

Ugh.  After the holidays and a vacation in January, I was at my highest weight ever.  I have really been trying since February, had some setbacks, but have actually lost ~6 lbs.  I haven't been really great at being consistent, but figure something is better than nothing.  Here's one of my problems though...  Does anyone else get really angry that you have to go exercise?  Like really angry, any amount of encouragement sets you off, angry?  Sometimes I feel like I have a 2 year old having a temper tantrum in my head!  I argue with toddler me, laying out all the logical reasons as to why I have to go do it, but toddler me still says, "But I don't wanna!"  Lol, sigh...  Sometimes I win, sometimes toddler me wins...  Anyone have any tips for getting over that???

May 12th - 135.6 lbs
May 22nd - 134 lbs

Breastfeeding helps a lot. I'll have my 6 week postpartum appointment in a couple weeks so I'm not really exercising much yet, just some walking here and there. Once I get the OK to workout I'll start back up with running, which I miss terribly.

I had tried exercising in the past and it was just boring. What helped me was pairing it with something enjoyable to make it fun. For me, I started listening to podcasts which helped me learn various things. Perhaps you could try doing it with someone too.

Bumped back up to 221.7 after an 11 day trip home, but back on our healthy eating and weighed in at 220 this morning which is up 2lbs from my lowest weight pre-trip. Initial goal remains 208 then I will reassess but likely it will be 199.
