January goals
« on: January 01, 2025, 08:36:35 AM »
New year, new month. New me but not just yet, I am having a lazy day today :-).
Here are my goals for January 2025.

  • Sleep more. At least seven hours at least four nights a week.
  • Drastically reduce time spent on screens. It takes too much time and lowers my energy.
  • Continue getting rid of stuff/sorting out the apartment. I need to finalize taking care of all the stuff from my bedroom to be. Handyman comes at the 14th. Need to finalize Monday 6th, which is a bank holiday, including dropping it all off at dump and charity shop.
  • Continue with my bedroom. Decide on flooring no later than Wednesday 8th. Discuss wall colour w/painter during second week of January. Go to IKEA to buy bed 5th or 6th of Jan. Handyman will start mid January. Painter friend will come by then as well, will discuss wall colour w/him then.
  • Eat better. Started January at 79.4 kilograms. End lower. Want to end at 78.4 or lower. Increase protein and veggies. Log food on MFP.
  • Go to the gym eight times.
  • Swim two times. Would like to try the pool on my way home from work.
  • Go for a walk for at least ten minutes every day.
  • Yoga & stretching at least three times a week, at least ten minutes every day.
  • Take the kids to the indoor pool twice.
  • Start thinking about growing/garden.

I track with colors:
Green: completed
Blue: progress/on track
Orange: at risk/behind
Red: did not complete

Just a few things for me this January. I find if I follow the first 2, other goals not even listed fall in to place. Good luck everyone!

1) No alcohol
2) No sugar (fruit is ok)
3) At least 10 minutes of yoga every day
4) Starting January off with a 72 hour or longer fast

Back after a (not-very-successful) digital detox last month, and ready to dive into the new year!

Ironically, I had a very productive December in spite of not really tracking, so I'm pulling forward some of my November list just for the satisfaction of crossing things off.

  b. 1 Sequel
2. Do yoga once a week
3. Listen to music every day

4. No unplanned personal spend
5. Keep "Consumables" under $700
6. Cooking
  a. Try a new recipe
  b. Cook for freezer/pantry

House Stuff:
7. Drywall repair
  a. Paint
A. Beadboard - Done!
8. Baseboard - Done main room, only laundry left
B. Hang Bathroom Cabinet - Done!
C. Fix Rattling Outlet - Done!
D. Install Baby-proof latches in kitchen - Done!
9. Put Away Holiday Decor
10. Caulk Baseboards
11. Re-caulk Kitchen Counter
12. Hang Basement Doors
  a. Laundry
  b. Utility Closet

Garden:
13. Plan Garden
  a. Schedule for tilling/ordering bushes
  b. What to plant in raised bed
     i) Use only existing seed supply

I'm in! I'll try to have less goals so that it's easier for me to achieve them all.

Wellness:
Less screens, read more: 4 books in January

Health & Fitness
-Mindful eating 24/31 days
-Workout at least 3x a week
-Yoga once a week

Let's try this...

Get major calendar items for the year copied/transcribed/imported into my digital calendar. If it doesn't beep, it doesn't exist.
Transition to the new phone I bought. There's a lot of backup/cleanup to do, so this is a project that kind of intimidates me.
Get some exercise each day.
Make a dent in the decluttering. This is a combination of getting items I've already culled listed on Buy Nothing and then off to their new homes and culling new items.
Finish at least the two books I am in the middle of.

Very impressive lists from everyone!

I’m going to continue walking 20k steps a day, but try to be a bit looser about it… basically achieve the average step count without being obsessed about getting the green bar on my app. This is turning into a habit. It’s also doing wonders for reducing my screen time!

Work on my projects most days — 5 days a week. Complete one project per week. This is the most important goal, so I’m trying not to overload myself with other goals that I will obsess over.

I already said this in the 2025 goals thread, but I'm going to keep it 100 this year:

For the full year:
- 100 times to the gym
- 100 hours of movement (walking/cycling)
- 100 books tried (this includes books I've tried for at least 20 pages and then quit)
- 100 hours of writing
- 100 hours of drawing

Per month, I'm shooting for 9 of each. This gives me enough leeway for holidays, flu season etc.

January goals:
- 9 times to the gym - currently 0
- 9 hours of movement (walking/cycling) - currently 1
- 9 books tried - currently 3 (had a few tiny books to start me off!)
- 9 hours of writing - currently  1
- 9 hours of drawing - currently 1

My goal for January is to focus heavily on PT.

Thanks to serious illness, surgery, and surgical complications, my PT got pretty neglected for several months and now I've lost quite a bit of function. I have even cut back my work hours by a third to free up more time and motivation to focus on this.

I started last week and am already feeling substantial benefits.

I'm also taking a white sugar break, which I do regularly. I develop intense sugar cravings if I eat sugar too often, so if I've developed a sweet tooth I'll take a 6-12 week sugar break, which very effectively makes sugar unappealing to me. The holidays always include a lot of sugar, so Jan is always a smart time for one of these breaks.

After a sugar break I have a strict rule of never having sugar two days in a row and never more than twice a week. As long as I maintain that pattern, the sweet tooth doesn't come back. But even just a week or two of breaking that pattern and I'll aggressively crave sugar every day.

I HATE having cravings, so a sugar break is always welcome after the holidays.

Three items out of the house, with another three or so lined up for tomorrow.
Polished off what was left of one book and made about 50 pages of progress in the second.
Backed up my offline photos from my old phone and ran a backup of my podcast app to save/move my progress.

I really like the number goals, @MaybeBabyMustache . I will try to track food 5 days in a row, 2 times. OR 10 days total, sequential not required.

I’ve walked 20k steps every day so far. I am going to get new walking shoes and/or insoles… don’t want all this walking to have negative consequences on my feet LOL. Good so far but my feet have been feeling a bit tired the past few days. Sidewalks are harder on the feet than trails.

Weirdly, my cardio is really good from all the walking over the past 37 days. I did a 6-mile run and felt very in-shape cardio-wise, but terribly sore in my quads during and after.

@Fru-Gal - I find that goals with actual numbers work really well for me. The second half of that is setting up trackers so it's easy for me to measure & track progress. I'm getting all of that rolling today as well. I understand & improve what I can track, so it's helpful for me.

Oh, no! Whatever that's about, I hope it works and you heal so you don't have to do it again/longer. Also that the books, movies, and whatever else you occupy yourself with while you get through this part, are excellent.

No healing, unfortunately. I'm 90% certain that I have adhesions from a recent surgery that are constructing my bowel. The liquid diet is essentially an elimination diet for the month of January, then I'll reintroduce foods slowly and see what consistencies I can tolerate, but I'll likely be on a soft diet indefinitely.

I'm probably never going to be able to eat legumes and raw vegetables ever again...guess what the majority of my diet consists of...lol

First check-in, I will try to check in on Sundays.
Exhausted from Ikea, so much people and screaming kids. I just wanted to go home, but managed to do all I needed. Then grocery shopping, which was better. So happy that I still seem to be on my way out of depressed state. I'm surprising myself w/having energy and getting things done (not huge things, but I probably couldn't have done them last year).

  • Sleep more. At least seven hours at least four nights a week. One night of five so far... and that w/time off. It's after midnight now so probably not this coming night either.
  • Drastically reduce time spent on screens. I have reduced it a bit but not enough.
  • Continue getting rid of stuff/sorting out the apartment. I need to finalize taking care of all the stuff from my bedroom to be. Handyman comes at the 14th. Need to finalize Monday 6th, which is a bank holiday, including dropping it all off at dump and charity shop. I filled up the car and went to the recycling/dump. Unfortunately the queue was so long that I didn't even went there, just turned around. Hope for better luck tomorrow, can't use car properly :-).
I went on a walk during lunch break Friday, to a store where I could look at flooring. Decided on the one I thought, but good to see it live to confirm. Also, went to Ikea today and bought the bed. Need to email carpenter to inform but can do tomorrow as it's a bank holiday.
  • Eat better. Started January at 79.4 kilograms. End lower. Want to end at 78.4 or lower. Increase protein and veggies. Log food on MFP. Doing good so far. Down one kilo. Tracking.
  • Go to the gym eight times. None so far. Hope for tomorrow.
  • Swim two times. Would like to try the pool on my way home from work. None so far.
  • Go for a walk for at least ten minutes every day. Really short ones as it's very cold. Will be at least not so cold tomorrow.
  • Yoga & stretching at least three times a week, at least ten minutes every day. Two times this week, as it's not a full seven day week.
  • Take the kids to the indoor pool twice. The did something else that was even better, so it will be counted as one of the two occacions.
  • Start thinking about growing/garden. Not so far but ok.

I track with colors:
Green: completed
Blue: progress/on track
Orange: at risk/behind
Red: did not complete

It wasn't the most intense exercise, but I did get outside today on my bike.
Read another 50 or so pages in the current book.
Got all the way into using my new phone. Still in the process of setting up settings and finding the files that moved over. I am very frustrated with the OS's apparent lack of support for some of the third-party apps I use to keep sane, and I may need to carry the old phone while I work through some of the stuff that's just going to be a manual process, but I am getting there.
Got another few items out of the house (new total of 6 this year) and listed the next few. I need to get going on removing some of the things that aren't claimed on Buy Nothing.

So far I've done PT every day except one when my pain was too extreme and movement made it unbearable. But otherwise I've stuck with PT every day for the past 2 weeks despite it consistently making my pain worse, so I'm pretty impressed with myself on that front.

I was able to crank my exercise bike up to level 3 for the first time in since I got it over a year ago. My knee can only do a few minutes on the bike, but progress is progress.

Day 1 of clear liquid diet is going well. Thankfully 3 years of intermittent fasting under my belt makes not eating a pretty manageable thing for me because my system is used to fasting.

I'll be sticking to broth and a greens and electrolytes powder for as long as I can tolerate, which should be at least another full day or two, then I'll introduce very thin protein shakes.

But so far, so good. Just had a "big lunch" of broth...yay

Jan goals: I've come down with a cold or something, which is a blessing in disguise.  I wanted more time & space entering the new year and now, I have it. Can sit on the couch with ginger tea and contemplate the upcoming year (and read!)

-4-5 no-spend days per week (marked in dayplanner)
-breathwork/meditation 3-4 days/week
-$800-1000 into savings
-research, save for (and later in year, buy) adventure vehicle (not *new* but new to me)
-take dog kick-sledding or ski-touring, 3-4 times
-try 1-2 new recipes/week

My January goals are:

- Dry January
- Getting back into my normal exercise routine of strength training/cardio M-F/5 days a week, after being sick for the last 6 weeks of 2024 took me out.

Thankfully, I actually *want* to do both of these things, so my likelihood of achieving both of these goals is high. So far so good on dry January, and I got back to the gym on Jan. 2. Go me!

Exercise, decluttering, and reading efforts are all continuing so far, although a bit slower during the work week.

Phone migration is also continuing, sort of, at least in the sense of continuing to open and initialize things on the new phone and move settings and stuff. There's one app I use fairly often, where I'm pretty stuck. I'll make another effort on the weekend, when I have a bit more time to argue with it and try different things. I really wish reading my files off my SD card weren't something they felt they needed to lock down for security reasons.

Ten days in, and I am still dry for January. Went back to the gym last Thursday (Jan. 2) and went every weekday this week, which was my goal. Feeling good! Though the number on the scale isn’t going down yet, probably because I am building muscle mass back up as I am in theory losing fat mass.

Way to go!

Yeah weight loss is very jumpy for me, which is why as much as I hate tracking it, it's helpful to see the number jump around but eventually drop (and also to nip gaining trends in the bud). I don't track it every single day, but enough to see the trends and record any high/low points.

On day 3 of food tracking, and day 43 of walking 20k steps a day.

I'm not tracking weight or steps. (I don't track steps because I also bike a lot.) I did walk a little more than three miles yesterday. So far, I've managed to exercise at least a little each day this year. I've read parts of the book I'm working on all but a couple of days (hoping to make up some time this weekend). I've gotten 15 things out of the house, and I don't entirely care about numbers or days, as long as the net continues to be getting rid of things.

The thing that was stuck about my phone migration is still stuck, but I've transferred and initialized a few more apps, and I've removed several things I didn't ask for that came pre-installed on my phone. (Facebook, LinkedIn, Amazon, and Temu, among others.)

There are some goals I'm trying to do that I'm less able to state quantitatively, namely sleep better and eat less sugar. So far, so good, on both fronts. The Costco bags of almonds and pistachios seem to help with cutting down on other junk and post-lunch energy crashes. I still seem to operate better with an afternoon nap, and time permitting, I'm helping myself to those.

Doing well on the whole not eating solid food front, but I've had to take a break from exercise because my body is exhausted.

@Metalcat - a liquid only diet is the absolute pits. No wonder you're exhausted. Here's hoping your energy will rebound as you adjust.

Thank you. I'm very proud of myself for how strict I've been. For the first few days, I was struggling with complying, but later in the week I was finally willing to eat tomato soup 3 meals a day.

Quick second check-in.

A good week except for lack of sleep. Exercise is a bit so-so but I have been eating well..

  • Sleep more. At least seven hours at least four nights a week. It's after midnight now, and I have to get up early tomorrow. But I did make it to at least seven hours for three nights this week. Better than usual.
  • Drastically reduce time spent on screens. Still not good enough. So much time wasted.
  • Continue getting rid of stuff/sorting out the apartment. I need to finalize taking care of all the stuff from my bedroom to be. Handyman comes at the 14th. Need to finalize Monday 6th, which is a bank holiday, including dropping it all off at dump and charity shop. So much progress! A lot of it is gone. I have also sorted out the cleaning cupboard and the pantry..
I think everything except wall colour is sorted.
  • Eat better. Started January at 79.4 kilograms. End lower. Want to end at 78.4 or lower. Increase protein and veggies. Log food on MFP. Decided to go hard core weeks w/o kids and easier when they are here (not logging those weeks). This morning I was at 77, but today has been a day of eating w/the kids.
  • Go to the gym eight times. Still no progress.
  • Swim two times. Would like to try the pool on my way home from work. Yesterday, swam 1 000 metres. A bit sore today.
  • Go for a walk for at least ten minutes every day. I missed yesterday but still ok. Today 10 000 steps, even thought it's really cold with snow and ice.
  • Yoga & stretching at least three times a week, at least ten minutes every day. Only twice, have to schedule so I don't forget. Tuesday, Friday, Saturday coming week.
  • Take the kids to the indoor pool twice. Went yesterday, the swam and had fun..
  • Start thinking about growing/garden. Planning in my head. Will not do anything until after bedrooms is finished..

I track with colors:
Green: completed
Blue: progress/on track
Orange: at risk/behind
Red: did not complete

We should be closing on our new home at the end of this month. My goal is to make a new budget (once the mortgage numbers have been finalized). Sounds like a simple goal but it is a very important one that I need to follow through on, so I present it here for accountability.

-4-5 no-spend days per week (marked in dayplanner): have managed 2-3 per week
-breathwork/meditation 3-4 days/week: only 1-2 per week, will add stretching/yoga as part of this self-care
-$800-1000 into savings : $850 so far
-research, save for (and later in year, buy) adventure vehicle (not *new* but new to me) : reading about SUV vs truck, hybrid, etc, etc. Not my forte
-take dog kick-sledding or ski-touring, 3-4 times : 2 wintery adventures! 1 snowshoe 1 kicksled
-try 1-2 new recipes/week : - curried adzuki beans
                                         - red lentil tortilla soup (pressure cooker used for both recipes)

I don't make New Year's Resolutions, but I always like to have goals.

1) Weigh myself every day. I find this keeps me honest without having to track every single calorie.
2) 100 pushups a day.
3) 10k steps a day.
4) Follow the financial goals I have set. Max my roth, max my HSA, max my 401k.
5) Do one fun thing this month. Already knocked this off by going skiing with a group of friends.

My January goals are:

Dry January (so far so good)

Prioritize sleep (stop binging Netflix at a decent hour)

Stay hydrated

Give heartfelt compliments

Show up (for work, life, whatever)

Write down my positive affirmations on a regular basis, either daily or weekly

Eat more legumes

C'moooon!  You're so close to the One Punch Man workout!  Add 2000 steps, 100 sit-ups, and 100 squats.  Do that for 3 years, have all your hair fall out, then join the hero association! :D

Actually, this isn't a bad idea. Adding some squats and sit ups would be very easy. I actually think that would be good for me :)
