Are there prizes?

Thanks for tracking us; I'm not worried about "competing" against anyone other than myself.  Barn this morning, walked the dog 2 miles tonight.  8/8 winter wildebeest days complete!

While I was out walking tonight, I remembered that MMM wrote a blog post on this topic:  https://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2014/12/23/its-winter-get-out-and-enjoy-it/

@horsepoor, no prizes except cheering - but we should feel free to give them to ourselves! And thanks a million for sharing that MMM post, which captures exactly how I feel. I thought I'd read most of the blog but I guess I haven't been systematic - a fun project. (I think I remember a thread about reading from post #1 but can't find it now)

@LifeHappens, I added you to the "Weather Resistant" list, but if you want to be in the totals too, let me know

@Bumbles8 Hurray! So glad your leg is doing better!

As for me, 2.8 total walking so far today and more to do. Looking forward to running and/or hiking this weekend!

Jan 8 - 2 miles walking
Jan 9 - 1.35 miles jogging
Jan 10 - 1.35 miles jogging

If @HappyCheerE can run on 1/1 with icicles in the trees tinkling like wind chimes, I have no excuses in CA, even a bit of rain!  I hope to have more running days after next Wednesday.

Last night I walked the dog 2 miles in the dark in semi blustery weather.

Snowy Saturday morning could be an excuse to sleep in, but I peeled myself out of bed and got to the barn by 7.  Spent 3 hours with the horses before my fingers turned to icicles.  It sure makes me feel like I earned my luxurious weekend brunch of bacon, eggs and waffles!  This afternoon it looks like the sun will peek out and it will hit 40, so I'm waiting a bit to get my weekend run done.

11/11 winter wildebeest days done!

I'm forced to walk and jog a bit over a mile every morning because it would be so much trouble to notify all my neighbors that I won't be picking up their dogs. The neighbors have varying physical problems. I started by walking one neighbor's dog and it seems to have escalated. If only they paid me for it I'd be rich.

Sadly, I'm going to have to tap out of this challenge. My back just can't take daily running. Swimming, walking and a couple short runs per week are the best I can do right now.

Good luck with your back.  I can never do daily running, mostly my knees/ankles but lately shins/calves etc....maybe I'm just getting old :P

@LifeHappens healing and self care are better than some silly old challenge!

I'm concerned I might be in the same boat after the 15th, when I attempt to run every day...

Jan 12 - 1.35 miles
Jan 13 - 1.2 miles walking

The weather has been colder this week which is not my favorite. I work night shift, sleep all day, and sometimes miss the sun completely. So, some of these shorter runs were done in the dark in 19/20ish degree weather.

8- 12 mile run
9- 1.72 mile run
10- 1.76 mile run
11- 4.52 mile run
12- 1.53 mile walk
13- 1.57 mile walk
14- 5.0 mile run

I almost broke my streak today - didn't go to the barn in the morning due to my work schedule.  We got snow last night that was preceded by some frozen rain. Headed out for a run after work and realized that any sidewalks that had been shoveled and not sprinkled with de-icer were essentially skating rinks, so I turned around with my tail tucked between my legs.  Then I remembered this challenge, and noticed the sad little number of steps on my watch, so I put on warmer clothes and took the dog for a 2.3 mile walk, managing not to slip and fall on my ass even once.  When there's fresh snow on the ground, I just put on my screw shoes and go, but this mix of uncertain footing is super awkward for running.  Hopefully it will melt off by the end of the week.

Can't wait to get to the barn tomorrow morning when it will be 18F or so!

@oldladystache What a great routine to have fallen into - I bet your dog-neighbors adore you! Love the photo.

@LifeHappens Not running every day is really smart. Walking some totally fits this challenge so you're still in if you want to be! Sorry your back is acting up.

@Naomi  Good for you getting out in the dark. I enjoy it once I'm out, but crossing that threshold is so much easier once it gets light...

@horsepoor Be careful out there! When the footing is mixed I wear my screw shoes anyway. I figure sidewalks and pavement see worse. :*)

For me:
10th - 4 miles mostly walking
11th - 4 running and 2.5 walking
12th - 5.5 running and 3 walking (great weekend!)
13th - 1 mile walking and 7 15mn increments on the bike. I commuted to work for the first time in several months! Drizzly rain on the way home but it was so great to be on the bike path
14th - just a mile walking - first time below 2 :*(
Today so far: 2 miles walking.

Have jogged 2 miles everyday except for 3.  One of the three days I walked a couple miles outside.

Also threw a 5+ mile hike in there.  Pretty happy so far but I’ve dealt with amazing weather.  So not nearly as persistent as the rest of y’all.

I live in the southeast so I have felt like a cheat for most this challenge.  But it was ~25* this morning during my run.  On Saturday it was upper 30s and drizzling during run, so these two days have made it feel like a ‘winter’ challenge.

So far, I have jogged 2 miles everyday except for three days in January.  Two of the three days I didn’t jog I was outside most the day and walking around.

I would say I’m around 45 miles so far this month - this includes a 5 mile hike.

Just got home from almost 3 hours at the barn.  20/20 so far this month.  Wednesday might be a challenge because I won't be able to go to the barn and it's looking like we're in for a wet week.

@Bumbles8   I'm in CA and feel like I'm cheating too. It's been cold for our standards,  but never below freezing, and I've managed to avoid any precipitation.

Jan 20 - 1.35 miles running
Jan 21 - 1.15 miles running

@oneday I’m not the rules expert, but no precipitation may be just a little cheating.  Just kidding

I feel like a winter wildebeest now because this morning was my third consecutive run in sub-30 degree temperatures.  I will be expecting my imaginary shirt in the mail soon.

Oh, and this morning was way faster than usual.  PR for two miles.

@Bumbles8  Hopefully it will be a warm imaginary shirt!

No rain today after all, so I'm cheating too. 3.5 miles today between walking at lunch and just now with the dog.  10 day forecast has us above freezing, if not a little soggy, for the remainder of the month.

Yikes, week 3 already and I've gotten busy and behind in posting - will do the leaderboard tomorrow, so get your numbers in if you haven't yet (mine are all over the place but never less than 1). One of the things I like about monthly challenges is getting in the groove but then it's over before I think "why am I doing this again?" Great job all, and more tomorrow!

@nvmama Sorry about the sick kids - hope they are doing better!
@oneday Sounds like your knee is holding up? But taking at least one day (haha!) off a week is probably a good idea.
@Bumbles8 Imaginary shirt on its way! Or maybe it's already there - how would we know? :*)

My catchup:
15th - 2.5 walking
16th - 2 walking
17th - 1 walking
18th - 3.75 running, 2 walking (actually tromping through snow - visiting MIL in western NY where it snows literally every day)
19th - 1 walking
20th - 5.5 proper long run, 1.5 walking
21st - 2 walking
22nd - 2.5 walking, 2 "units" biking
23rd - .75 running, 1.25 walking
today - 1.5 walking, 2 units biking

@Bumbles8 I'm no longer cheating, as I spent time last Wed in snow weather!

@HappyCheerE the knee is doing OK, thanks for checking in.  I've been wearing the brace, but tried today without it and felt fine.  I am planning rest days for February...I want to be a Beest!

Jan 22 - 4.5 hours downhill skiing, likely about 1/3 of the time skiing, the other 2/3 of the time in chair lifts.
Jan 23 - 1.35 miles running
Jan 24 - 1.35 miles running
Jan 25 - 1.35 miles running
Jan 26 - 1.35 miles running
Jan 27 - 1.35 miles running
Jan 28 - 1.35 miles running
Jan 29 - 1.35 miles running
Jan 30 - 1.35 miles running

ETA: only 4 1 days to go!  I'm really going to enjoy my rest day Saturday.  I've also noticed how much stronger I feel...yesterday's run was in the 13 minute range; I started the month in the 15-17 minute range.  I didn't go into this expecting to improve, only to start establishing a habit.  So this is a nice bonus.

Jan 31 - 5.53 miles walking - got on a 2 hour phone call with my sister and perambulated outdoors the whole time.  It's not a run, but it took the time I had allotted for that (and more), so it'll have to count.

@HappyCheerE

I totally flaked on this challenge, my bad! But it was a fun start to the year and encouraged me to get a few runs/walks in so thanks.

All told I think I got outside for exercise (run/walk/bike/ski) somewhere around 15-20 days. And I work outside a lot for my construction job also.

Great job to those who completed!!!

How is it 02/2/20 already? Congrats to all of us, no matter how much outside time we got - we made it through January! Pop in any last numbers and I'll do the final results tomorrow.

My last set is:

Jan 26 - 2 walking, 4 running
Jan 27 - 2 walking, 2 units biking
Jan 28 - 1.25 walking
Jan 29 - 2.75 walking
Jan 30 - 1 walking
Jan 31 - 1.5 walking, 2 units biking

Checking back in a little late.  I am pretty sure I didn't miss any days in January; I either worked the horses, or walked/ran outside all 31 days.

February is coming in like a lion, but I'm 3/3 so far.

I let y’all down.  I ended up running 23 times in January for a combined 51 miles (Strava).

Two of my ‘off days’ I walked easily 2+ miles outside.  I also had two separate hikes for 5+ miles each (I jogged on one of those days too).

I would put my final January mileage at 65 miles on 26 days.

I took a couple days off for injury and then some near the end because I realized running everyday was probably not the best thing.  This challenge did push me to run in freezing weather and rain quite a few times - so that’s a plus.

Hoping to continue a very active 2020 and start mixing in some additional biking and longer runs.

Yay, @HappyCheerE it was fun! Are you planning on throwing down any more gauntlet?

There were a few days I would not have willingly gone outside if not for this challenge, so thanks for starting it.

I'm trying to convince myself to get for a few minutes today, but it's 7 degrees right now (feels like -4) and the high is only going to be 14.

Same!  Without a challenge to report in to, I have far less motivation.  Double thanks, HappyCheerE

@oneday, I did, thanks! I waited until it warmed up to 12 degrees and ran 2 miles.
I should have challenged myself to continue this in Feb bc I've already missed a couple of days bc it's been colder and snowing more.

@Naomi  I'm up for continuing this challenge!  No days missed so far in February for me.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
