Put the garden to bed properly for once
« on: November 13, 2018, 12:25:59 PM »
Every spring, I think with regret about the bulbs I should have planted, the garden beds I should have mulched, fertilized, whatever. This year I'm going try to do it properly.

I'm going to start with:
- dig up the peonies I know that I planted at the wrong depth, because the ground was too hard.  Redig and plant at precisely 2 inches.

- mulch round the apple trees

- plant a bunch of bulbs that have been sitting around indoors on a shelf

What else? Who's with me?

This is a month too late for me, we have an inch of snow and down to -9C tonight.  I did get most of my vegetable beds ready for spring, I got the garlic planted mid-October.  I got some of my fall plantings mulched.  The rest of the bags of mulch are sitting beside the plants they are to go on, I just  need a warm day (anything above free zing is warm these days) after a warmish night - there are a few days next week that might work if the forecast holds.

And the hoses, and the garden implements all need to go in the shed, I got most but not all.  They'll be fine under the snow, eh?

Just getting started on the fall/winter gardening after the heat devastated the garden. Lot's of work starting this week when it should cool down - about to plant lots of flowers and growing lettuce and celery and swiss chard.
There may be some sweet potatoes left to harvest.
Checking to see what survived the heat of the summer - hopefully the lemon verbena and some of the herbs. The rosemary looks great.

But first I have to tackle the weeds and use the power washer on the stones and cut back the blooming red passion flower.
Looking forward to sitting outside in the gazebo and listen to the freshly cleaned fountain - sipping a little something.

I just got about 80 cloves of garlic planted last Saturday, and I might put in a few more in the next few weeks. I love garlic because it's one of the few things I can easily do in the garden this time of year. And I don't have to worry about it until spring!

Sigh, yes, this never totally happens with me either.  Still sticking pots of bulbs in the ground at the last minute because didn't take the time to properly plant this summer, mostly because the lily beetles have arrived and decimated my lilies, so not sure if it's worth the effort.  I did get the patio furniture covered though and the strawberries mulched and barricaded from the dog trampling them in the winter.  Forgot about my little border fence in the front, and now it's frozen into the ground, and hopefully the snow clearing guy doesn't trash it with his bobcat.  It's always a balance between enjoying the last days of fall and not wanting to face winter with actually being prepared.  Somehow it never seems to tip in favour of being fully prepared!

Oh yeah... I'd better turn off the water and take all the hoses in! Thanks.

I may be jumping the gun a bit, but I am starting to look at next year's seed suppliers.  I jut read the history for William Dam seeds, so interesting. And all the seeds I have gotten from them have been good.
