As far as travel styles go, though, I think that's personal preference. I like staying in hostels and getting to know people that I can go adventuring with. People that stay in hostels tend to be good at finding free/cheap adventures. It's also nice to have kitchen access so I don't have to rely on restaurants for every (or any) meal.
In Thailand, I stayed with family, so I was living like a local. I enjoyed it thoroughly.
In a couple weeks, I'm vacationing the way my husband likes to for our anniversary. It will be relaxing and extravagent, but that's generally not my style. To each his own.
