Travel for Fun rather than Broadening Horizons

Saw this today and it makes sense to me.

One can experience so much virtually these days online or with video/youtube that the physical experience may even pale in comparison.   We loved exploring Machu Picchu with a great guide, but couldn't help wondering what a decent Nat Geo special on the site would be like with 3D recreations, drone footage, and historical tidbits.  It also might have been more "fun" on the Belmond luxury train and hotel atop the mountain, but the cost is eye-watering.

Experiencing things first-hand like the locals is really not that much fun in a lot of situations simply because they locals may not live so well.  Travel is more fun when it is getting out of the frugality grind, living a little, eating well and being a bit spoiled.   Southeast Asia springs to mind, in particular.  We had full body massages every afternoon in Thailand and Bali ($10 for an hour).  Private guide, car and driver was $35/day.  Both worth every penny and more!

That link didn't work for me.

As far as travel styles go, though, I think that's personal preference. I like staying in hostels and getting to know people that I can go adventuring with. People that stay in hostels tend to be good at finding free/cheap adventures. It's also nice to have kitchen access so I don't have to rely on restaurants for every (or any) meal.

In Thailand, I stayed with family, so I was living like a local. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

In a couple weeks, I'm vacationing the way my husband likes to for our anniversary. It will be relaxing and extravagent, but that's generally not my style. To each his own.

Dicey

Right now, my MIL and her pal Al Z. live with us. What I wouldn't give for travel, any travel...

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
