Fit by 50
« on: March 24, 2017, 09:44:12 AM »
Inspired by jordanread, Jon_Snow and Exflyboy I'm going to make this happen by my 50th birthday in February 2018.

I understand that writing stuff down is supposed to help with staying on track with eating and exercise. So, I plan to list what I eat as well as what exercise and stretching I did each day. The good news: Two years ago I lost 40 pounds and got fit (so I know I have it in me to do this). The bad news: I got sidelined by a serious illness and an injury. Now I weigh 60 pounds heavier and am at zero fitness.

Where I'm starting:
- Female
- 5' tall
- 180 lbs

My goals:
1) Flexibility (easily complete an intermediate yoga class)
2) Core strength (easily do my former 50-minute core strength workout)
3) Cardio fitness (easily hike Mt. Rainier's Skyline trail)
4) Appropriate weight (fit back into my clothes, ~125 lbs)
5) Maintain the above

Your tips, caveats, and advice are warmly welcome!

My wife has found that more than ANYTHING it's her portion sizes that affect fitness.

With a bit of sarcasm, she will tell you that you could sit on your ass almost all day every day as long as you eat small portions. I think she eats between 1200 and 1500 callories a day and is a pretty fit lady.

Very true. I've found that if I'm active, my eating stays in check. However, if I'm not active then the comfort eating kicks in. I know from experience that the hardest part for me is the first month - getting started and enduring the discomfort of being out of shape. I wish I could find a one-month residential boot camp with work-outs, stretching, hiking, and healthy food prep. That'd help me surmount the initial inertia.

* Gratitude to GreenSheep who taught me how to fish (instead of giving me fish) with this list:

Exercise: None
Weather: Cold and rainy day

Food
- 1 c coffee with 3 TB whole milk
- 1 c oats + .25 c raisin + .25 cup kefir diluted w/water
- 6 c green tea
- 16 oz water
---
- Shake (4 TB Protein & Greens powder + 1 c greens + 2 c water)
- 4 c ginger tumeric tea
---
- 2 c mixed greens + 1 c garbanzos + 1 tsp & vinegar
- .5 baguette with butter (I know, I know)
- 1 navel orange

Oh, and I should mention the big serving of disappointment at having eaten the 1/2 baguette with butter as well as not exercising. But I know that old habits are hard to break. So, I remind myself that yesterday was a success and holding out until 7 p.m. today (and only eating half of the baguette - the rest is now in the compost) was a success as well. Onward!
