I pace while on business calls.

I live and travel in a motor home, with a fully remote career. I'm on lots of business calls. I have an excellent wireless headphone, and I pace my motor home - back and forth, back and forth, 8 steps each way. It all adds up. Example - I just got off a 2-hour call today, and clocked almost 11k steps... 8 steps at a time.

That is a great way to combine the necessary with good excercise.

Did Windsor pilates today at @Metalcat's recommendation and the 40 min of yoga.
I really enjoyed the mindfulness of this workout. After 45 years of punishing workouts, running etc, my joints just won't tolerate high impact activities. Am having to shift my focus for this second half of my life because my goal isn't just fitness, but also avoidance of pain and injuries

Lol 🤣 - thanks. This makes me feel surprisingly better actually.

I did 1 hour today on the stationary bike at the gym. It was challenging but kind of enjoyable at the same time.

1 hour on stationary bike at gym today, 110 kettlebell goblet squats with the 53 pound kettlebell.

Eventually I'm going to get back to my upper body...tomorrow. Just like I said yesterday. 🤣

Trying a new thing. Start a day exercise regimen with circuits yesterday today I ended up running 45 minutes and doing 15 minutes ab work… feels pretty good to have a plan.

I like this thread, so much better than one where people are taking drugs to lose weight because they won’t…well, lots of things.

Our neighborhood has been under construction nonstop since we moved in. They recently completed a small connector trail/sidewalk that has made it way easier to get a four mile run in without having to backtrack numerous times. I can handle some laps and backtracks, but it does mentally beat me down a bit.

Got in a 4.5 mile run in between morning meetings in a wonderfully cool July day here in the Midwest.

I like reading about folks doing some weight work, I have tried to establish a habit of doing some sort of strength work, but fail at it. No excuse since I am on the phone in my home office for hours each day, and have a couple dumbbells down next to the treadmill. Step one is getting them to my desk.

I have added some stretching recently that has made my daily run a bit better.

Keep moving all!

I think you have a very odd perception of why people chose these drugs. I became obese when I couldn't exercise due to my back and I have a long history of emotional eating. I  personally couldn't take Ozempic because it made me so nauseous I was barely able to.consume a few hundred calories a day, but I did try it as a treatment for diabetes and the associated weight loss effects.

On a more positive note, have you considered body weight exercises instead of the dumbbells which clearly don't inspire you?

Lol 😂

Today: 37 miles on the gravel bike outside with some friends of mine.

14 mph average pace. I am still way out of shape compared to those guys, but riding 37 miles seemed easier than the 24 mile ride.

So - I assume I am making progress.

Still dead tired afterward, man...sooo exhausted right now.

Keep moving everyone!

ETA: I'm pretty sure @GuitarStv is an expert cyclist, which is why I view his post here as so funny.

ETA2: NM about this being easier. The recover period has been brutal and I have mostly just been lying in bed today with my wife periodically coming in and asking if I'm sure I want to go to the store with her and me going 'yes....just.....one...more...hour...of rest" then passing back out.

Probably feels like a good exhaustion.

Yeah, it's a good comment, thanks. The little bit of pure strength work I do is just some body weight stuff. I do have some limitations in leg work that is annoying. Squat type things, or even burpee type movements are a no-go for one knee (it's just about strain under flex, as opposed to unloaded flex (mostly) while running.)

Squat type things, or even burpee type movements are a no-go for one knee (it's just about strain under flex, as opposed to unloaded flex (mostly) while running.)

There are so many forms of resistance exercise that you could do though that aren't dumbells.

AFM, my femur bone has healed, but my hip and knee are still fucked, so I'm still extremely limited, but doing a lot more than I was.

We got a Bowflex knock off that I'm calling the FauxBow, which I love. Ever since my body building days in my late teens I've always loved cable machines. Even back then I had bad knee problems and never did any squats or burpees.

The go-to exercises aren't the only options. I had to get creative at times, there were some exercises where my trainer had tied weights to me, or used resistance bands to isolate certain muscles, but it wasn't hard to work around injuries.

And that's only if you are looking to work muscles in a certain way. If you just want to exercise for general fitness and health, you could try something like Pilates, which is amazing for core strength, balance, posture, and stability, which is lacking in a lot of people especially as they age.

Even a lot of active people suffer from weak core muscles like psoas, especially if they sit a lot when they aren't active, and this leads to all sorts of problems from being active with weak core muscles, which is also very common as people age.

Back to me though,

I also got an exercise bike, but it's just for rehab purposes. I do 5 minutes a day with low resistance just as a range of motion exercise for the knee, which is really struggling with its new orientation and could need its own major surgery if rehab fails.

On rehab days I do a lot of leg-weight PT exercises, mostly focusing on the hip, glutes, psoas, and knee stabilizers.

My psoas is snapping, so it's one of my main priorities right now because it's snapping over a recently repaired labrum and it could just re-shred it, so that sucks.

51 mile bike ride today.

I am completely and utterly exhausted. And also kind of sore and jittery...but mostly just exhausted.

Oddly enough - I feel less exhausted this time than the 37 mile bike ride. I still feel like I can walk around, albeit slowly. Maybe chugging Gatorades and eating granola bars during the ride helped this time...idk.

I still feel incredibly out of shape. But I'm also sort of comparing myself to my friends, who are in much better shape than I am.

It feels kind of wild that I even rode this far and long. I have never ridden a bike for 51 miles before in my entire life.

Camping/hiking recently broke me out of an exercise slump and I'm keeping up the momentum. Two yoga classes earlier this week and a kayaking session today. Best of luck to everyone on their respective fitness journeys.

Finally tried out the new yoga studio across the street. And I love both instructors that I have been to. I have been going every day, and I even went twice last Monday to try out the barre class. It was intense.

I pushed DH to join me for a bike ride this morning and he must have enjoyed it because he suggested we make that our Tuesday/Thursday morning exercise. The yoga starts later on those days and he doesn't feel like he gets much work done, so he is going to try to join me for bike rides before I go to yoga. We have a goal to bike to a town about 20 miles away, spend the night, then bike back. But for now, our butts just need more time in the saddle. Nothing like @TreeLeaf .

Haven't moved much more than necessary b/c 95F+ weather. Did mow the grass and then trimmed it over the weekend. Antique electric lawn tractor is so much better than my antique gas lawn tractor b/c no exhaust and engine heat. Less noise too.

We did move a 6x12 trailer load of furniture from my parents' place to our's. They are trying to downsize but don't have enough space for what they have. hey are having a hard time letting go of things they've owned for many decades but if it goes to my house then it is okay. We'll keep part of it and give away some of it. Had to pace myself moving the furniture so I didn't get too hot. Work, sit and hydrate in front of a box fan and visit. I don't cope with the heat as well as I did ~25 years ago.

Did spend some time on Google Maps working out a bicycle route. Friend told me where they ride and I worked out the possible routes in that part of the county. There are some awesome country roads that I had not considered that are low traffic, low speeds and that have long flat-ish sections as they run closely along creeks. These roads are often book-ended by massive steep hills out of the creek hollers so ebike. Pedal the flat portions on zero boost for exercise and then use boost to help with hills. The hills here are why many people discount bicycles as viable transportation or recreation beyond the parks paths.

When I get caught up on projects a bit and the weather starts to moderate, I will ride those roads.

In the meantime, trying to go kayaking. Can't find the time. We have great places to still water kayak around here. Not interested in white water paddling. I'll leave that up to the dare devils.

Right when I was getting a little more mobile and a little more active, I tore my fucking vastus medialus head of my quad muscle. Now I can't even stand and am back on full crutches until it heals

Dang, I hate it when your body seems to fight you on doing the right things!!

Be gentle with yourself. I did play with my Nintendo Switch last night to swing my arms around and.rest my legs. There are also some decent chair aerobics videos on YouTube.

But maybe you need more rest than that.

Yeah, I'm on day 3 of bed rest and just leaning into it. Just straightening my leg is brutal. Taking a shower was my big adventure today. I'm now working on getting up the energy to go get myself some water.

That's about the extent of my activity today.

Went on 41 mile bike ride yesterday.

The bike rides have gotten - significantly easier, and also more fun with less recovery time afterwards.

I have sort of been neglecting my strength training, partially because the recovery time for some of these bikes rides seemed so brutal. I will try and add strength training back to the routine.

I've been working diligently on improving my cardiovascular fitness since the beginning of the year.  It's been an uphill battle due to asthma that was literally out of control as in, I was using my rescue inhaler 7-8+ times/day to control my shortness of breath. This was in fact my motivation to strengthen my lungs.   Also, I spent 7 years adding 30-40 lbs of muscle mass with strength training with 100% anaerobic training methods.  I've done a bit of research and discovered that aerobic capacity/VO2max is based not only on lung capacity, but on the muscles ability to uptake oxygen.  Endurance athletes have physical changes in their muscle tissue that improves oxygen uptake.  I have NONE of that since all my muscle mass was built anaerobically.

So when starting my journey to improve cardio, not only could I not breathe well, but I was moving A LOT of body weight around with a bunch of muscle mass that literally sucks at anything longer than about 30-60 seconds of effort.

I started Cross Fit at the beginning of the year.  The workouts are scaled for men and women, with women's Rx using less weight, less reps, less calories, or some combination of all three.  So far for the year, I have only been able to do 3-4 workouts at women's Rx.  I just don't have the work capacity.  The weights are super light and easy for me, as are the mens weights for that matter.  But my work capacity is in general, still far below women's Rx on most workouts.  It's been improving but it's a slow process.

Today's highlights:
I completed my first ever mens Rx workout.  To be fair, it was *ideally* suited for my abilities with frequent brief rests due to being a partner workout.  But I'm still counting it!  I did my fair share i.e. all work was split equally between me and my two partners.

Also, we tested back squat Friday.  I'm still WAAAY off my life time PR, but my 1RM(1 rep max) is now 365 lbs and should go up steadily if I continue to train that lift weekly.  We were going for a 2RM.  I hit 355x2 pretty smooth but 365 almost pinned me.

Most importantly:
Just in recent weeks, I have gotten to the point where I am going for days at a time without the need for my rescue inhaler.

Resting heart rate is 57.

Joining for the first time. I've always worked out, but I've been pretty hit or miss with consistency, since having kids. COVID changed that for me, as I was WFH, and didn't have any international work travel. There was also no personal travel, so consistency was basically guaranteed. I've worked out 90% of the days in 2021, 2022, & on track for 2023.

My typical routine is 3-5 days of Orange Theory (a 60 minute workout class, which includes running, rowing & strength training), 2-3 days of running & my "rest" day is the elliptical. I also try to stretch every day.

I spent most of 2023 increasing my running miles, to train for Hood to Coast (a relay that happened two weeks ago). I did complete the relay, but unfortunately, I had COVID (didn't know, before I got into the van with my team mates), so my performance wasn't what I'd hoped. I want to redeem myself next year! I was totally inspired by the awesome relay experience, so I signed up for a half in March. I think it's been two years since I've done a half, so looking forward to training again.

I have a ton of traveling coming up, so consistency will be challenging for me.

For this week (recovering from COVID, so taking it pretty easy):
-elliptical on Monday
-Orange Theory Tuesday, Friday & Saturday
-Treadmill runs on Wednesday & Thursday
I'm planning to get up early tomorrow to run before my flight to Tokyo. It was a pretty low mileage week (15 miles)

Great job! The discipline is the key, for me.

I have been focusing on clean eating and regular exercise. that means 6 days a week of lifting and cardio, and 20 out of 21 meals on plan. I have had a few slips but generally this has been a very positive experience. I'm loving feeling stronger, and seeing all kinds of benefits in terms of lower resting heart rate, fitting into old clothes I held onto, more energy, etc.

@Weisass - I saw your question in the other thread (to another poster). My metabolism is pretty slow already, but I've been shocked by how little food my body realistically needs. I'm in no way starving myself, and I'd say I eat 1500 calories/day. But, it's a combination of better choices, and more consistency. If you'd have asked me a year ago, I'd also have said I ate 1500 calories/day. The challenge is that I'd realistically only do that a few days/week. The other days, I'm guessing were more like 2000-2500 (weekends, nights out with friends, stressful day at work means a giant cookie, etc). By trying to create the consistency of having more like 90% of the days actually be 1500 calorie days, that's where I've seen the bigger payoff. Less about getting those calories down, and more about realistically eating. I'm doing the No S diet (found on a journal here, really just common sense - https://www.nosdiet.com/) & love that it reduces decision making fatigue. It says you can have more flex on Saturday & Sunday, but most days I'm content to eat the same way all 7 days & save splurges for truly special occasions.

Hey @MaybeBabyMustache  I hear you. the no s diet is pretty interesting. I've tried to reduce decision fatigue in other ways, in my case by opting into a pretty low cost program (as long as you actually do it every day it is super cheap). I've had great results, and one of the things I've noticed is that it cycles between lower and higher carb weeks, which seems to help with avoiding metabolism issues. What you are describing sounds similar and not at all in a super unhealthy range. Happy it is working out for ya :)

It took a long time for my quad to heal, but it is finally fully healed.

I'm also healing well and able to walk a lot more. My leg can actually take more distance now than my arms/shoulders can with the cane/crutches. So once I'm healed enough to go without a walking aide, I should be able to significantly up my walking.

I'm alternating strengthening PT and upper body weights with my cable machine that I ordered this summer, along with some free weights. I'm also doing a few minutes of stationary bike most days, this isn't for cardio, it's for knee mobility. I get cardio from a "smart" hula hoop, which I do a few times a week.

All-in-all my activity has radically improved.

I am afraid to exercise because I borked  my knee somehow 2 months ago while digging in my garden. It still hurts a little bit going down stairs. I hope it isn't permanent !

Going to pickleball today just to say hello, maybe play one slow game, and ask people how they like their knee wraps, and why they wear them.

Trying to avoid going to doctor about it, but would, if I thought it would help.

Wow, digging in your garden is now a dangerous activity. Who knew ?

Going to pickleball today just to say hello, maybe play one slow game, and ask people how they like their knee wraps, and why they wear them.

Trying to avoid going to doctor about it, but would, if I thought it would help.

Wow, digging in your garden is now a dangerous activity. Who knew ?

Why not start with PT? Chances are that's what the doctor will recommend anyway.

Also, there are tons of forms of exercise that don't involve knees. My right knee is fuckered and I exercise every day.

I went to pickleball yesterday and was surprised to see half of them were wearing knee wraps.  Somebody lent me one, and it was less painful to go up and down stairs with it on.  I played one game, and made sure I didn't stress my right knee. Even went on the bicycle machine afterwards, on an easy setting.

I am doing my own home made PT from what I see on the internet, and saving myself a $30 copay per session.  Just started a few days ago. OK so far, at least not getting any worse. I see on this forum that some folks get their maladies made worse by going to a PT session. At least I won't have to pay for it, if I do that to myself, lol.   Don't worry, I am being very conservative and gentle.

You are right, the doc would probably recommend PT.  I once went to a surgeon about my frozen shoulder, and simply gave me a xeroxed set of instructions for shoulder exercises to do, and it fixed my shoulder with no actual physical therapist involved.

So basically, I am just grabbing my xeroxed set of knee exercises off the net and 'running with it',  lol.

I typically get amazing results from PT, but I'm picky about my providers and demand a lot from them.

I recently had no choice in the PT I used for surgical rehab and she was essentially useless. I would have just fired her and found someone better if I could.

Good PT is worth its weight in gold. I cannot understate this.

Just bought an inexpensive sleeve for my knee.  Have worn it for a few hours. No magic yet.

I suppose I am less self-conscious about the knee, with the sleeve on.  Feels OK.  Maybe a bit less pain when going up and down stairs.

Of course my ideal goal is to heal the knee, not just relieve pain (but that's OK too, lol).

Reviving this thread, because exercise is good for us.

I am a couch potato with no internal motivation. Gym failed. So, need to figure out another way to get myself to move around more. The new experiment: ballroom dancing.

Movement - check
Accountability - check
Affordable - group classes are.

The studio I found is about 4 miles from my house. They have a intro deal for 2 30 minute private lessons for $30. Had my first lesson last night, I enjoyed myself. Have my 2nd lesson on Monday. After that, I will either shift to the group classes ($10 a class), or do a few more private lessons until I get decent enough for the group lessons ($80 for 45 minutes). Will give this a try for a while.

My osteopath recommends cheap knee straps rather than the knee sleeves. Apaprently it helps knees way betetr than the sleeves..

I have used this and find this helped me betetr than the sleeves.. And have since gifted this to a couple people with bad knees as well.
