December Cycling Challenge 2017
« on: December 01, 2017, 10:07:04 AM »
The cycling challenge for December 2017 is up and ready for you to start (or continue) riding!!
If you logged miles last month, and selected "Remember Me" on the form, you have been added to this month's sheet already.

If you didn't log miles last month, or are a new participant
Click here to fill out the form.
You can access the sheet directly at this link.
I can manually grab your historical data too, so if it's off, just let me know.  If they aren't there within a day, or you have any other issues with the sheet, hit me up via email, Google+ Hangouts, PM, or just comment on this thread.
You can also join the MMM Strava Group for additional metrics and motivation. Happy Biking.

Since this is the last month of the year, I'm planning on spending some time this month revamping the Challenge. While for the most part I'm just refactoring some code to do things a little bit more automated, I'd really like to hear what suggestions you have to make this challenge better. Post in here for now. Eventually, I might make another thread just for feedback, but not yet.

Hey, I think my digits helped with that little uptick in November.

Love it, and just happy it's here.  Each year I seem to forget how to find my tab and enter my data, since I only participate in what I consider to be badass months in Canada.  Cruising my measly 2.5 km into work from April to October is not badass - it's bliss.

THANK YOU, jordanread.  You rock.

Hi all, I signed up for the Dec. challenge because... this cooler weather is when things get interesting, so why not?  If I'm not entering things correctly, please give me a shout.  I'm looking forward to seeing how the month goes.  Happy riding!

It doesn't look like you are. However, I will jump on a computer and get that cleaned up for you. There will be a sheet entitled frompa (sheet names are across the bottom) with lines for every day. Enter your miles there, and they will get added to the summary page.
The summary page should never be edited directly.

I'll post here again once I fix it

Frompa, you are all set to go. I moved your 20 miles to yesterday's date on your sheet (since that's the only day that has happened so far, I figured it was a safe assumption). Add to that sheet, and you will be good to go! Glad to have you here.

Also, I will PM you a link that should go directly to your sheet. That should help you get a start finding where to enter the mileage.

If anyone else would like a link to their sheet directly, just look at the URL when you are on your sheet, and pay attention to the last part of the url. You will see something like /edit#gid=#########. That link is to your sheet directly. If you bookmark it, it will always take you right to your sheet for the rest of the month.

So obviously simple really. Thanks for that!

I'm really interested in the money saved by not driving aspect - it would be cool to have some kind of running total. The CO2 saved might be fun to see broken down on an individual level too.

Perhaps also a mechanism to track elevation gains? I bike in an area full of hills.

Thanks, Jordan!

On the car metrics section on my tab I've been editing the MPG and price of gas to match my personal numbers. If you really, really need something to do, it'd be awesome if you could offer options for mileage in L/100km (that's how my car reports it's mileage) and gas cost per litre.

Have you been using the little box on your sheet? That's definitely something I'd have to look at. The one problem I can foresee with the gas cost per litre is that it's pretty much the rest of the world, so now we'd be talking about localization. I can do it, but I'd need to find some sites that actually have that data. I like that idea though!!

That's a great idea, and one that I will definitely implement.

Also, I'm going to get rid of the Remember Me option. If you logged miles last month, you'll get added this month. With this many changes, I am probably going to have to redesign the form, and allow for that to overwrite the existing options without brain farting on trying to add a new sheet. Challenging, but fun!! Keep those suggestions coming!

Yes, I've just been futzing with the calculations on my own sheet. I don't want to mess up the summary page ;-)

I just did it because the price of gas is so much higher here. My bike commute saves me $3.80 CAD per day vs $1.80 using the default formula. It helps with motivation.

I was just curious if you were using the Car Metric box in columns TU. You are the only one I know who does that, so I'm glad I added it in.

My goal for December is to commute by bike at least once.  For some reason I have this huge mental block about commuting.  I used to do it regularly but as I've gotten older I seem to be more self conscious about showing up to work drenched in sweat.

I also have a problem with going at cruising speed.  I tend to accelerate up short hills or if I think a traffic light is about to change.  I just need to learn to take it easy.

But, doing this challenge for one month made me envious of all the people raking up miles on their commutes, plus then the miles not driven are legit.

I figure this month I'll do it at least once to see how it goes, then try to go for once a week next month, and go from there.

Now that I realize this is an option I will probably start doing the same. I was too nervous about breaking things at first.

We have been having the most fabulous December... Highs above freezing (well above some days), and lows around -6 to -10C (14-21F)... It's been lovely to be out on my bike as much as I have been.

Yesterday we completed our second annual Christmas tree by bike. Hubby managed (easily I might add) to bike with both kids (4.5 & 1.5) and the Christmas tree on the extracycle. It was 5k round trip, but there was a hill coming home. I estimate he had at least 100lbs of cargo, and he still beat me up the hill! Kids had a blast! And the oldest only commented once that she wished we brought the car instead (to buy a bigger Christmas tree).

That's awesome! I'd have loved to see a picture of your DH, two kids and a Christmas tree on a bike. Did the tree go on a trailer?

We have an edgerunner longtail with the hoop-tie attachments and one Yepp seat. The tree went along side the back tire in the amazingly expandable extracycle bags. It had a bungy holding up the tip so it wasn't dragging. My daughter sat side saddle leaning to balance the tree out, while the youngest was happily in the Yepp seat kicking his sister since there was no where to put his feet. :)

I forgot to take a picture from behind and unfortunately it was far too warm for balaclavas and everyone is so identifiable that I won't be posting a picture here. :(I will try to remember next year.
@modacitylife on twitter has a whole collection of photos of trees by bike and you'll see a few longtails carrying trees like we did :)

This is AWESOME. I was just about to complain that I won't be able to bike the rest of the month because I've traveled away from the lovely SoCal 50-70F weather... (Realistically, getting ahold of a bike here is at least as big a challenge.)

Sooo, snowfall warning in effect... we are expecting 4-12" of snow in the next 24 - 48 hours.  Lacking a fat bike, and the energy to bike through powder on the shoulders with crazy holiday drivers.. I will be taking the rest of the week off.  Hopefully next weekend we will get one more short bike to the store in for our annual 'there's no parking suka's you should have biked!', trip to get bread and milk before the stores are closed for one whole day...

Cheers everybody! See you in the new year!
