Dutch Comfort,

You have made a ton of progress over the past two years, and now you are buying shares at lower prices that will have a higher return in the long run, speeding your defeat of your net debt!

Just happy that there was no backwards move. My decrease in cash funds (holiday and school supplies) was offset against an increase in investments. So no worries right now and I'm hoping for more market recovery and will continue my regular mortgage repayments and investments for the remainder of the year.

@frugalecon: you are right...... the fact that my mortgage is now lower than my total net debt only 2 years ago makes me feel proud!

Added 1 (small) savings account to the stash. So this accounts for the nice progress this month.
Still investing as usual, so hoping it will go up. But with the markets now, I have doubts that it will happen this year.

Continuing to pay down debt regularly, but in danger of re-entering this race due to market declines.  Not in a hurry to pay off debt with investment interest rates now well in excess of debt interest rates.  Didn't check, but there may have been a point where I went negative again in early October.

@UltraStache , Perhaps the balances make you feel like you're late to the game, but the $30,000 in I-bonds just earned a 9.5% annualized rate over the last six months, while I doubt your interest rates are anything close to that, right?

Correct.

Mortgage is 4.375 30 year(ugg sucks compared to 2.75 but I closed in June and this was a GREAT rate for then, and even better compared to now)
EV is 0.99%
Student loans deferred and hopefully cancelled.
Cash is @ 2.65% with Citi, getting ready to move some around for bonuses and higher rates.  $10k going to Capital One Savings for $100 bonus and 3%, which nets 4% for a year if I keep it there.  Discover is offering $150 on $15k but I'll wait a few days(now that Fed officially increased rate) to see if they bring their rate up around 3.  They are currently only 2.35.  Upgrade gives 3.5% on savings but I don't feel 100% confident in them...possibly completely unfounded, but I feel that way regardless.

A yearend bonus might help as well......... waiting for the final number, so I can plan on saving that amount in December.......

STRETCH Goal for 2023: (EUR 210K)

Just missed my goal for 2022 by 1K (236 instead of 235), but I knew it was a stretch, so still happy with the result.
Now, looking forward for 2023, I try to get to 210. This is also a stretch (my budget gets me to 215, but I like a challenge....). We have some travel plans for this year and a few large expenses for the house, which I took in the budget, but we're still working towards stuffing away as much money as possible.

Happy 2023 everyone!

               DEC 2022 ($226,794)
               JAN 2023 ($222,557)

I nearly made my goal, one more paycheck this year and I would have been there! Very happy with this year's outcome, considering the markets worked against me for this short-term goal. My goal for 2023 is 190K with a stretch goal of 184K. My goal will require me to have increased savings this coming year, and hopefully a little help from the market. I look forward to tracking another year of progress with you all!

Mortgage (EUR 306K)
Personal pension investments and Liquid Assets (without house value & company pension) EUR 74K

Net debt
July 2020 (EUR 314K) - started tracking
December 2020 (EUR 293K)

January 2023 (EUR 232K)

STRETCH Goal for 2023: (EUR 210K)

January was a good month. Next month it will go backwards because of payments for planned travel (tickets, lodging etc), but if markets continue their upward movement, I might come out equal. Fingers crossed!

We were selling off some equity for a big purchase and just decided to be done with the 0%APR a month early.

No tax refund yet, but we (early) repaid part of the mortgage from our savings. This will free up some monthly cashflow sooner than later! Very eager to get that mortgage below EUR 300K..... we're almost there!

Our net debt was defeated four years ago but we're about to take on a bigger mortgage that will put us back under.

Edit: estimates updated with actual numbers and moved to new post.

STRETCH Goal for 2023: (EUR 210K)

Nice month! Tax refund hit our accounts and was immediately redirected to the mortgage. Holiday pay also came in and was directed to my pre-tax pension account (resulting in a tax refund next year). Now the "quiet" months begin and hoping for a steady decrease of the net debt (until hopefully a bonus hits in December).

Definitely my single best month for tracking my debts and taxable accounts! My non-tax advantaged accounts have now accumulate a sufficient amount of money that market fluctuations have a noticeable effect here. I still have about 9k in cap space left on my 401k for the year but I expect to see good progress here until the end of the year!

Month was OK, thanks to markets. Had a few unexpected expenses, but still managed to improve the net debt position. So good to see that our net debt position improved 91K in 3 years! Planning to improve another EUR 9K in the next few months. Will be great to see an improvement of EUR 100K...... Sounds unbelievable but will hopefully soon be true!

Despite a 3 week spendy holiday, but thanks to markets and an unexpected refund, I could still put in a decrease of the debt this month! As from now...... hopefully no more unexpected expenses for the remainder of the year (I will take unexpected refunds and bonusses, thank you....).

Nice to see your progress continuing, even with the high spend month. I'll be rooting for you to reach your stretch goal by year end!!

Debts:
Mortgage: $213,473
Student Loans: $21,456 (Currently in Forbearance)

Assets:
Savings: $9,781
Taxable 1: $16,170
Taxable 2: $2,337
Taxable 3: $5,667

2021 Goal: (248K)
2022 Goal: (220K)
2023 Goal: (190K; Stretch 184k)

Net Debt: DEC 2020 ($261,341)
               DEC 2021 ($248,521)
               DEC 2022 ($226,794)
               JAN 2023 ($222,557)
               FEB 2023 ($219,331)
               MAR 2023 ($217,622)
               APR 2023 ($215,242)
               MAY 2023 ($213,078)
               JUN 2023 ($210,977)
               JUL 2023 ($205,630)
               AUG 2023 ($200,974)

Had another month with a high savings rate, and a decent market increase, leading to another large decrease in "net debt." I have some planned expenses coming in August, so I will likely not have a large decrease next month. I am looking forwarding to maxing out my 401k sometime in October so I can pile the excess cash into my taxable accounts, I may even exceed my stretch goal this year if things continue positively!

Mortgage (EUR 297K)
Personal pension investments and Liquid Assets (without house value & company pension) EUR 76K

Net debt
July 2020 (EUR 314K) - started tracking
December 2020 (EUR 293K)

February 2023 (EUR 234K)
March 2023 (EUR 232K)
April 2023 (EUR 231K)
May 2023 (EUR 225K)
June 2023 (EUR 223K)
July 2023 (EUR 222K)
August 2023 (EUR 221K)

STRETCH Goal for 2023: (EUR 210K)

The slight decrease is only due to the regular mortgage repayments...... no other wins, since we had a large bill to pay. Still feeling happy because we can pay this bill from our EF without any problems. So now we start building the EF back up again......

We recently achieved a fun milestone with our net debt situation, though it is more accurate to describe it as our net interest situation.  Our interest earned + passive income earned now exceeds our interest paid each month. And this by a large margin. It’s the result of years of discipline and sound decisions. And of course the large margin part is larger due to Fed rate hikes. But even without, we would be above break even.

Markets were not working with me, schools also not working with me (sending me lots of bills for all teens activities for the coming year......). Could still fund everything from the EF, so no major setback yet. Will need to start rebuilding the EF soon.......

The stock market and a large emergency vet bill really slowed my progress this month. Hoping to have a better month in October and with a little help from the stock market, I should be able to reach my yearly goal!

Wow, awesome progress since the start of the year! It’s good to see activity continuing in this thread, since I started it more than five years ago!
