Cutting down on fancy pants lifestyle October Challenge!
« on: September 26, 2017, 02:47:36 AM »
Iím going to be running an experiment for the month of October (actually starting this week).  Iíd like to cut out the daily coffees and almost daily snacks and muffins Iíve been buying.  I also want to cut out or down on eating out.  Iím spending about $450 every month on this, and it doesnít seem like a great use of that money!

I know you need to live a little, but honestly Ė over the last few months, those coffees have been a ritual instead of an enjoyment.  And the weekly muffin is scoffed down without much thought Ė going directly to the hips and stomach Ė while reading the terrible NZ newspaper.

In comparison, Iíve had two blissful afternoons in the last two weeks.  The first afternoon I cycled around the harbour Ė always a beautiful route.  I gazed at the scenery, enjoyed the sunshine and exercise, and felt pretty free to do whatever I wanted.

The second afternoon I spent walking around Onehunga.  I did a bit of shopping (shouldnít do this so much!), had a packed lunch in Jellico Park, and spent a good hour sitting in the park just thinking and planning and coming up with ideas.  I walked past a Cash Converters and spent some time trying out their second hand guitars.  I then went home and played on my cello for an hour.

Both times I didnít need to spend money, unfortunately I did.  And that money spent didnít add a whole bunch to the experience.

The point is, thereís a lot of different things I could be doing thatís not paying for coffee and sugary treats.  I want to break this cycle and see what itís like to not have this automatic urge to buy coffee all the time.  At the end of the month Iíll see if itís worth paying for it Ė and perhaps I will reset that particular hedonistic treadmill.  Iíll try report in on this experience over the next few weeks!

(Also posting this on my blog - )

Feel free to join me if you're keen :)

I'm in--moved to a new rental house this September, with a nonfunctional kitchen (mold under the sink, minor, but there was some definite clean-out needed to make the kitchen habitable.)  Thus I've started a habit of Fancypants cafeteria lunches.  Worst of all, they're not even great lunches, usually unhealthy and expensive.

I also frequented the $1 espresso machine for a week, but that was because I was sick and didn't want to use the communal brew your own good coffee station at work.  Not something I regularly make a habit of.

So October is bring your my lunch and breakfasts to work month for me.  :)  Hopefully reclaim some much needed SR.  Also my workplace offers onsite fitness classes, and I feel 9000% better when I do those even though they're a slight expense.  So I'm committing to getting back on schedule there, too.
