@formerlydivorcedmom We're seriously considering moving, so I'm starting to consider what I'd need to do to stage our current house and sell it.
I was running through a mental list of things I'd pack and put in a storage unit for a few months ... and now I'm trying to justify why I would need to keep those things at all versus getting rid of them. If I don't need it/won't use it for three months...do I really need it at all?
My husband is going to be really unhappy with me....he's admitted that I've only given away one thing he actually wanted (but had zero use for), but he is still highly suspicious of my attempts to declutter.
We just did this!! 1 storage pod was used to remove clutter from our house (we had a really small house and maximizing space made the place look way bigger than it actually was), Later, we used 2 pods were used to move rest of furniture/shed stuff after the sale.
In general the 1st pod (declutter) contained the following:
- Giant couch which we love, but made our living room look too small, fits nicely in new house. For staging we moved a smaller couch from our airbnb unit to the living room.
- Winter set of tires for car (should have been the summer ones that got packed..lesson learned)
- Seasonal items (we packed in October, knew we would have a house by spring), summer clothes etc.
- Craft items (things I know I will use once we had a new house but would not need for 4 months).
- Any extra kitchen stuff- stuff for "Hosting"- extra plates etc. Also, big specialty items- turkey/roast pan, giant soup pot. Things we use fairly regularly, but would not need in transition months.
- Personal artwork/decor- wedding photos, wedding gifts, personal trip momentos (not a lot of stuff, we like to curate our own "collections", but no one cares about my personalized artwork).
For staging we kept everything in one colour palate again to increase visual "flow" from one room to another. Anything not in this colour got moved/packed.
What we sold:
Giant ikea entertainment unit- no way we were moving that
Other ikea large furniture pieces- easily replaced and easy to sell
Patio furniture/bbq/Lawn maintenance things (bought second hand, will rebuy second hand in new location)
What we should have gone through more:
I moved out of the house before the 1st pod was packed up for work, I brought my own personal things that I have used for 4 months. Unpacking this weekend I realized a ton of old products (hair products, face/body lotions) etc. got packed. I haven't used it in 4 months, pretty sure don't need to ever use them. They all may get tossed. Same thing with a bunch of costume jewelry. I had a whole box of stuff, that obviously I don't need. At one point I used it, but it may be time to say "kthxbai" and get rid of it.
