Been running to get some sleep
« on: March 17, 2014, 08:48:51 AM »
I am in Vegas for work and generally am exhausted each night but stressed enough that I can't get to bed, so instead of wallowing in it or watching tv or any such nonsense, I have enjoyed the beautiful weather and gone for late night runs of a few miles. Last night I ran 4 miles, went to my room to stretch and shower and as soon as I laid down on the bed I fell asleep. VICTORY!

Awesome! Dealing with insomnia is tough and frustrating. I know, I've gone entire nights not being able to get to sleep. Exercise does wonders to help. Thanks for sharing and reminding us of that! Hope you enjoy many more restful nights.

That's great to hear. I have the problem now where if I don't run at least 3-5 miles at some point during the day, I have a tough time falling and staying asleep. There was an interesting tidbit in the second Game Change book about the 2012 election: According to Texas Governor Rick Perry, he suffered from terrible insomnia on the campaign trail because he had a back injury/surgery that kept him from jogging. He claims that insomnia was the reason why he was so loopy during all of those public appearances.

in my late 20's i suffered from insomnia to the point I collapsed and ended up in hospital. After sleep study s etc..the said I probably didn't sleep for a long time. Other than caffeine after noon the two biggest things that ended up helping me is 1) journal. write things down and dont worry if it makes sense but just write whatever it comes into your mind it doesn't even have to be legible. 2) Dont try to fall asleep. That just creates more anxiety. One more thing I will add is when you travel to time changes etc.. try to stay on your home schedule. Finally, Remember 8 hours is an ave. I found for me 6-7 is ideal. I still of course go through periods where i get less than i should, usually when i travel and then i too will just not fight it and go exercise or read something boring.

Late night exercise is a 50-50 for me. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it keeps me up with adrenaline coursing.

With insomnia, it's better than staring at the ceiling though!

Try setting a regular workout schedule. Evenings if that works for you but everyone has a "best" time. My ideal time is mid-morning, but schedule makes me do it early AM. (4:45)

I have a stationary bike and earlier this week I biked some before bed (only 15 min, but was hard exercise) and it was amazing!

Biking everywhere I can with my heavy 20 year old mountain bike (after discovering MMM of course!) has given me the best sleep of my life.

Can't say enough about how the human body is designed to exercise everyday.  It has paid dividends far beyond being in the best shape of my life, including much better sleep, more happiness, more savings, less stress...generally everything.

Running is the best cure for insomnia and stress for me.  I have to finish 2 hours before bed because I get energized at first, then I crash.

Today was a good day I ran.  Anytime I run or even jog it is a great day!  Lots of benefits including a supercharged morning, lots of pep and an evening jog or walk, helps soothe my soul too.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
