Title: Art-tober
Post by: snacky on September 30, 2016, 09:13:55 PM
Hello fine mustachians
I cordially welcome you to join me in a month of creativity. Develop some discipline as an artist, explore the therapeutic and meditative effects of consistently working on creative pursuits, or get your butt in gear and finish some long-abandoned project.
Grab your pencil, mouse, instrument, needles, or whatever else you use to bring a little more beauty and truth to the world. Make a plan that is sustainable for 31 days.
Vamonos!

I am going to do one arty thing a day. Probably drawing. Minimum five minutes. It can suck, that's fine. 31 consecutive days of spending time on art.

I will do one watercolour painting of indeterminate size every day. And it's 1st October here now, so I will attend to it immediately and take advantage of the motivation.

I did it. Delicious cake on a pretty blue plate, and an attempt at a cat silhouette.

I am super commitment phobic, but I started crocheting a blanket...three years ago? and it's MAYBE 1/4 done? So I'm going to drag that sucker out and start working on it.

Are movement-based arts included? Like dance, acro, and circus arts? If so, I'm in: practice daily, and maybe make a new routine.

YES, Clarkai!

Today I really didn't want to do this. I'd had no sleep and there was too much going on. I couldn't find my sketchbook or pencils. In the end I founf lined looseleaf paper and my kids' crappy markers. Blah. But I made myself do it, and ended up spending a really enjoyable 30 mins drawing. So worth it!

Hopefully tomorrow I'll have the right materials to make it even better.

Okay, I'll give myself the goal of processing a photo a day for October - will go through old photos and start processing those that show promise, even if they don't look that exciting straight out of the camera. I've done this before and it's yielded some interesting results - breathing new life into old pictures where I didn't see the potential before. Hopefully this thread gets updated everyday as a reminder to me to do it. :) I won't post all the photos I do for the month, but if I'm particularly satisfied with one, I might.

I'm in, starting a day late. I'm an amateur violist, and I need to get back to baking consistent with daily practicing.

I'm in!  15 minutes art a day, not counting knitting/crochet(I do that every day anyway).  I've got a vendor table coming up in two weeks, and I need some great stuff to display!

Grumpily forced myself to sketch last night before bed, even though I didn't want to. Got nothing good out of it, but am happy because today I know what ideas not to even bother with. \o/
Onwards and upwards.

(PS thanks for doing this, Snacky! Good kick in the pants, it is.)

I'm doing Inktober this year, one or more ink sketches a day for the month of October, so I guess that qualifies as Artober.

Day 2 complete. This time I used pencils instead of markers and was much happier with the results. Still on lined paper, though. :/

I slacked off a little last night, 'cos I read really late, and Husband wanted me to come to bed. But I was like...can't fail on day 1....so I did like, 2 minutes of crochet. But I did 45 tonight, so on average I'm killing it.

Joining in! I saw this thread mentioned on another thread and I just happened to start some online painting/drawing classes on October 1. I've always had a penchant for art, but I became a scientist instead. Because of the way my degrees were structured and the competitiveness of my field, I couldn't take art classes in university and did not make time for them in my modest spare time. I just started an online 30-day sketching/painting challenge and I'm loving it! You are supposed to do 1 6-minute lesson per day but I've already completed several. I will continue to draw/paint something every day for the rest of the month.

Snacky: I discovered this site over the weekend in a roundabout way, first by looking for some online drawing inspiration and discovering Jennifer Orkin Lewis:

https://www.creativebug.com/classes

The class I'm taking is: Daily Painting Challenge: 30 things to paint with August Wren

But there a lots of sketching and drawing classes. You can get a free trial membership for two weeks.

I'm in!  I'm going to mimic Oro and say 5 minutes minimum of sketching a night (got another possum painting planned!) and same for sewing, even if it's only unpicking.

My goal is to finish the paintings I have planned for my first EVER craft show table on November 5th.  I have about 10 canvases that are currently blank.  (various sizes) I can definitely finish them all if I am consistent and paint nightly (not counting Sundays.  Those days are packed...)  By my starter pricing (read -- low, but good enough to cover hobby paintings), those added to my current stock will give me around 700.00 in stock to bring with me.  The event could bring in close to 500 people...so hopefully the art practice and supply and art show will all be wins in the end ;)

I switch between quilting, sewing, and crochet.  Today was the quilting group at the Senior Center (who knew you could have so much fun at a Senior Center in your 30s, lol!  Well, other than the fact that they have a gun range there too...)

I taught myself to crochet some granny squares, so I'm doing four of each style in various colors of cotton yarn.  I work on those while watching tv.

I have a quilt ready to bind, one to quilt on the hoop (I hand quilt), and another ready to cut out.  I'll find something to sew next week, maybe another shirt?  And I have a fabric postcard I need to make and send to someone.  I did one Saturday night/Sunday morning, and, while I really like the idea, I didn't like my execution (first time making one).  I'll work on that again soon too.

Online art classes have changed my life for the better, but  I have to watch my spending on them.  Craftsy can be good value, but only buy on sale.  Skillshare has quite a bit of content, but the production value really varies.  Sketchbook Skool is a great concept with weekly artist coaches for 6 weeks, but at $99/"semester" it is spendy.  ArtistNetwork TV is one that haven't tried, but think I will next year in place of Skillshare, there are quite a few good artists that I want to learn from who have courses on there.

(one of my kids, from years ago. I couldn't spend an hour looking at that picture without sharing it. My take on it was acceptable, with room for improvement. It's so hard to get eyes to match!)

Such a sweet subject you have, snacky!

I missed the last couple of days, so I made up for it today by doing four photos. The extra one is for tomorrow, as I might be otherwise occupied again then. Enjoying this gauntlet so far. Seems like I'll be getting a black-and-white China photo series out of this... or maybe a black-and-white Beijing series - we'll see, all the photos I've processed so far are Beijing ones, but I may get to the other regions later in the month...

I haven't done watercolour except the first day, but I've been sure to pick something arty each day. Mostly colouring in, but today's was starting a little quilt. Doing each square will keep me nicely occupied.

In the circus arts realm, I've been training handstands everyday, and also challenging my self to five chin ups a day for the first half of October, after which it'll increase to six. Yesterday was a class day, so one hour of training handstands, and two hours of working on aerial (meaning split tissue, rope, and static trapeze ). I'm feeling really good about my progress; I'm just getting back to it after a year break, and I'm gaining some skills I didn't get the first time around.

I did a whole row of my blanket on Monday night and half a row last night.

I think i'll bring my coloring books in my travels, 'cos there's no way I can bring my crocheting with me, it'd be a whole suitcase by itself. If I color every day I'm in CA (and Chicago) that counts, right?

snacky, what a handsome little subject! I'm so intimidated by drawing/painting people. I'm such a newbie. I've literally done like five drawings in my life that I seriously sat down and worked at, other than doodling for the kids. The class is helping as it takes some of the intimidation away by giving you something to focus on, but no people subjects yet.

clarcai, circus arts sounds cool!

FIRE artist, thanks for the suggestions! I can see how these classes could be addictive. I'm going to try to max out my free trial at creativebug first, plus maybe an extra month for 4.95, and then I'll check out other options. The supplies can be pricey too when you are just starting out.

My blankie is looking mighty fine. I used my artistic sense to realise it was going to look odd unless I unstitched and rearranged the tiny triangles. I also made some little balls out of leftover flannelette, and am stitching them closed now. This challenge has made me very productive!

Once the blankie top is done, I have another one to do. I need new fabric for the back, so finishing will have to wait.

One week check in!

How is everyone doing?

I've managed to get something done every day, even if it hasn't always been anything big or impressive. I feel good about the consistency.

Tell me about you!

I've been doing ok, doing a little training everyday, and classes. I've been doing probably about 5 to 10 minutes, but my goal is to improve that to 20 minutes every non-class day this week. I really want to get to the point where I can do street performance as an occasional side gig- which will take a lot of practicing and building of routines!

I haven't been doing my thing consistently every day - I do more on some days to make up for those when I do none. As long as I reach my goal of 31 old photos processed for October I'll consider it a success, regardless of the pace.

I've crocheted 8 squares from all the skeins of yarn I have, so will need to borrow more from my mom (she has way more than she needs, so I'm helping use some of her stash!  Of course, I also bought her more sock yarn, because I love the socks she knits.)

I've gotten a few hours of quilting done the last few days.

Yesterday and today I got the fabric to make my son a vest (his request and choice of fabric), as well as some pj pants and a robe.  Had to do a couple trips to get everything with a sale/coupon.

Now that I have some basic crochet down, I want to try a stuffed monster.  That might have to wait a little while though, too many other items to work on right now.

Week 1 was a success!  I didn't get an Inktober sketch every day, but I did do a few.  Plus I finished a large illustration, a painting, taught a paint class, designed a pumpkin carving template, and finished knitting a blanket(minus the fringe).  Today, I'm going to work on a piece of wall art, and start on a drawing(not sure what yet).

I'm getting very close to a significant jump up in my art skill.  I can tell this, because I currently hate every single thing I've ever produced.  Hooray!

Well, I'm a bit late to the part, but nevermind.
I started writing a novel a while ago, and have already written 24k words. My goal for the rest of the month is spend a minimum of 5 minutes a day, building up to longer writing periods. (Suggestion of a book called 5000 words per hour). I want to get this story finished!

Sort of.  I've done art for a long time, only selling work here and there, and I'm trying to make the jump into actually making a career out of it.  I'm a homeschool mom though, so "full time" is still pretty limited for me.

Thanks :)  I had never heard of them before either, but I joined a quilting board a friend suggested, and they do a bunch of swaps.  So, I took the plunge and signed up.  The topic was "one word", and "Imagine" was a word my swap partner suggested.  It's my take on a kitten looking into a mirror and the reflection is a lion.  I tried it with a mirror, but it just wasn't working.

It's my first time using a fusible interfacing, steam-a-seam, etc.  It had to have some sewing and/or quilting, as well as a finished edge.  I had the fabric on hand, but had to buy the ribbon and gold thread (50% off coupons for both).  I'll be mailing it in a clear envelope :)

I think I'll do more swaps and make some to mail to family.  It was fun, and nice to be creative on a small scale project.

Lol, no, he SAID he was going in, so I started and figured i'd do 5 minutes. Only he dilly-dallied a bit and didn't go in right away, and by the time he did go in and get done, it had been 12 minutes, so I figured i'd go for an even 15 and just kept going for three extra minutes while he went to bed.

Week 2 went well.  I finished my drawing, as well as the wall art(string art, so fun!).  I also worked on a couple more drawings, and painted a sign for my art booth for last Saturday.  The sign even got a few compliments!  And I knitted a little bookmark for fun, and crocheted a baby hat to sell.

Bump! I've been inconsistent, but I'm trying lots of art things. Latest was a comic. I have a knitted bunny I'm never going to work out how to finish, but if I unravel it I can crochet it and finish quite quickly. Bonus, I can do it while enjoying the sunshine outside today.

Today I'm working on making a Scottie Dog mini-quilt for a secret santa swap.  I hope I have enough time to get it hand pieced and quilted!  I took saw a photo of her white mini-schnauzer, and a scottie dog is similar enough to pass.  And the color of the scarf will closely match the one in her photo.  She's also a quilter, so I know she'll appreciate what went into the project.

But October isn't finished yet. And I want to clean up the rest of the month with a bang!

So this is me recommitting. :) Let's knock the last week out of the park, guys! Let's make cool things. <3 Or at least make.

Da Oro Plan:
Today: layout planning for a piece
Sat & Sunday: Inks and finalizing details
Monday-Thursday: Colors and details
Friday: FREE SKETCH TIME
Saturday-Monday: ?????
Tuesday: NOVEMBER, HOLY BUTTS.

Great idea!! Too bad it is the third week of october already... but I'm always looking for ways to be more creative. Right now I'm working on my halloween costume, so that has to count for something, right??

I have a good friend whose mission is to spread creativity and get people to do something creative everyday. Here's her website if any of you are interested: http://stephaniemedford.com/

Lots of ideas for projects such as map-making (collage), print making, drawing, etc.

I unraveled it, and even started crocheting it. The yarn is knobbly so I can't actually tell where my stitches are! It might be done by spiral instead of in the round just to make it work...

I finished a piece I started a week or so ago last night, then, this afternoon, I was doing some painting with my toddler (we were doing seperate works)
Not so sure on the first one, a starry night type that was based off a hubble photo.
Second one was inspired by a youtube tutorial video, and I'm 50/50 on whether to say it's finished, or whether I can tweak it some more. But good learning none-the-less.

Really nice work alewpanda and Flyingkea.

I did nothing for a week and a half when I was away on a trip without a laptop, so now I'm catching up. Fortunately I gave myself an easy challenge so that isn't too much of a problem!

Question time! Crowdsourcing your thoughts on the creative direction of my photo processing, because I cannot decide. Your input is much appreciated. There is no right or wrong answer.

Do you prefer the original composition or the cropped version? Any particular reason? Or are they both the same to you?

The full version, because my eye is drawn to the taller darker mountain as the focal point. I feel the cropping pushes the eye towards the branch, but there's nothing interesting on it (that i can see) and it feels forced.

I like the full version too. :)
Something about having the mountain and its reflection bisected on the right side feels... squished when cropped. Widder frame gives a lot more breathing room.
Beautiful photo!

Whoa, you people are quick! Thanks so much! I also like the spacious feel of the original, but was wondering if the cut-off raft on the right is distracting, so I cropped the bottom, but also the right side to keep the picture dimensions. But I could really just crop it on the bottom and not the right, and not worry about keeping the dimensions... not sure if that's better than the original, though, still, because maybe the cut-off raft does actually add something positive to the photo... waffle waffle. As you can see, I am yet to develop a confident photographic eye. :p

Another vote for the original.  It looks awesome!

In the original, my eye is drawn away from the people and to the upper right.  In the cropped photo, my eye leads to the people.  However, I like it best when I scroll down on the cropped photo to the point where the branches coming down in the center of the photo are just cropped out.  Less white space that way, and the docks pull you in instead of the sky pulling you out.  That would bring your dimensions similar to what you want as well.

Just depends on what you want to be the focus.

This is my project for the weekend...  I'm hand piecing/quilting a mini quilt for a Christmas gift.  Fortunately, it's going faster than I thought it would, have all the rows pieced, now just need to piece them together.  It's my first pieced block, so, while there are some minor issues, I'm really happy about how it's turning out!

Thanks for the vote, tardis! And thank you for the assessments/suggestions sparkytheop. So much potential for experimentation with different crops! This is such a great place to get critique with all you artistic people around. :D

Also, mini schnauzer quilt is adorable, and I want to pat Frank.

I agree that the right hand mountain gives dimention. But I also think that the picture would gain something (and lose something else - that's the way of things)  from being cropped both top and bottom. Yes, you loose the more square shape. I don't think that's a bad thing, though. Because I personaly think the longer shape picks up the long-narrow shape of both a river and mountain range. My two cents.

Thanks, Anje! After initially posting the pictures here, I tried a few more different crops, and one of them was cropping the top and bottom, and I definitely agree with you that the long shape complements the river and mountains. It's wonderful how different crops can bring out different aspects of one picture, and change the feeling of it. It can also make it difficult to choose a favourite, haha!

I love all y'all's work!  It's really cool to see all your different skills.

Last week wasn't as "arty" as I'd have liked.  I crocheted a couple of hats, drew a few geeky pumpkin carving templates, carved a pumpkin using one of the designs, and worked on a piece of wall art.  My schedule is a bit more free this week though, and I have a designated "art night" with a friend on Wednesday, so hopefully I'll get more done this week.

I'm in a photography club, and one thing we will do is each "turn in" a photo, and then the photo gets a number (if there are 15 people, 1-15).  Then each person does their own edit of each original photo.  Then we show it as a slide show.  You get to see 15 (or so) interpretations of every photo.  Some all end up very similar, and some are very, very different.  You have free range editing the photo-- cropping, using filters, photoshop, anything.

One photo someone sent was a not-so great photo of dandelions.  I have Elements that has a "puzzle" filter.  I turned it into a puzzle and then moved some pieces out as if it was a puzzle in the process of being put together.  One guy turned a mushroom into a duck.  It's a lot of fun to see what people will do with the same photo, as sometimes we have completely different creative styles (some are very true to nature and how it would look to the eye, some are very into getting rid of "imperfections", and some just really like to play and make it abstract).

I got my block all pieced.  I started on Thursday, pressing and cutting fabric.  It all went so much faster than I thought it would, and I'm less timid about taking on a queen sized quilt now (I was afraid it would take forever to piece one).  Will quilt it this week, then need to finish up my two baby quilts.

Belated chiming in for the cropped version!
Fewer distractions, and gives more emphasis on what is there.

My partner used to be quite active in an online community where people would post photos and other members would provide commentary and vote to either place it in the community gallery, or not. I found it really fascinating and enjoyed reading the comments about what people liked or didn't like, how it made them feel, and what they thought would improve the photo.

I have not really participated in any photography communities myself... I was just thinking about possibly starting a thread in this forum where people can ask for opinions as I have in this thread. It's great to get different perspectives.

Thank you for your feedback! :)  Yeah, I get easily bugged by distractions... I always feel compelled to remove them if possible!

I used a temporary image sharing service (uploadpie), which hosts only up to one week, so they're gone now! I'm happy to start a photography thread if there's interest. There have been photography threads on the forum before, but none with a focus (hur hur) on creative decisions. What (other) kind of discussions would you have in mind for the thread? And would you have photos to throw into the ring asking for ideas/improvements? I don't want to be the only one posting pictures in the entire thread, haha.

I love your BB8 pumpkin!
Also the templates are very cool. At some point the directions changed from "shave" to "gouge", which I find interesting. Most of the men I know think there's a big difference between the two actions. ;)

I carved a pumpkin, but the kids came up with the design so it is very classic. They are happy so there you go.

Thanks!  Yeah, I started off using the term "gouge", but found that it was confusing people, so I started putting "shave" instead.  I also switched up the order, so hopefully people would know to shave first, then cut out.

Yeah, we have several classic jack o' lanterns around here too.  Kids can be really creative with pumpkin faces!

Fantastic work with pumpkins, Toffeemama!

Okay... I've processed 31+ photos for October so I have reached my self-imposed goal and I am happy with that. Thank you for starting this thread snacky as I am lazy and wouldn't have done all this otherwise! Now if I can be bothered, maybe I will sort through them and see if I can create a collection or essay out of some of these photos.

Limeandpepper rocked the challenge. WOOOO! I can't wait to see what you did!

Jessa and I were less impressive but I'm betting that Jessa did more than she would have without the challenge, and I know I did. It was awesome fun and got me back into doing art and I'm officially calling that a win. It's my challenge so I get to do that.

Thanks, guys!  And thanks to snacky for starting this challenge!

I've sort of been all over the place this month, but I'd consider it a success!  This month, I carved 3 pumpkins, designed 10 templates, did 1 painting, made 2 string art pieces, finished 3 pen drawings, taught 1 paint class, finished 1 knitted blanket, crocheted 2 hats and 1 shawl, and did several sketches in between!  My fingers are sore and my house is messy, but I couldn't be happier :)

So does yours, snacky!

Cleaning house would be a month-long challenge, at least for me.  There's three baskets full of clean laundry that need to be folded right beside me, in fact.  But crafting is so much more fun than cleaning! D:

Although I tacked on the first two days of November to finish my pieces for the show on Saturday....ahem

I now have just over 1000.00 worth of paintings/cards/gift tags to sell on Saturday.  My actual goal would be to bring in 400-500.00....although thats totally a shot in the dark, because this is my first show.  LOL

Is there an Art-vember? I finally got with it. Trying to get my crochet game back on to make some scarves for operation gratitude 2017 (to military service members). I still need to learn how to count my stitches... poor recipients of my potential scarves.

The practice is both frustrating and peaceful. Haha

And I bought a $10 watercolor set to go sit in nature (thanks Flyingkea for inspiration).

Well if I do finish anything, maybe I will imgur it here anyway for show n tell. ;)
