Annual Expenses under $10k in total?
« on: May 01, 2016, 06:50:49 AM »
Does anyone have total living expenses under $10k a year?

And can they break it down to show us how?

Thanks.

I live in China...this was my budget when I was living in a third tier city a few years ago...

Housing: $0
Internet: $0
Utilities: $0
Transportation: $50 or less
Phone: $6
Food: $100
Miscellaneous: $50
TOTAL: $206 per month ($2472 per year)

Housing is provided by the employer and is waking distance to work and includes Internet and all utilities

Transportation is for extraneous travel like going to the import grocery store for expensive stuff like cheese. It's about $0.40 for bus fare and $1-4 for taxi fares depending on the distance you're traveling

Phone is pay-as-you-go. 100 rmb lasts me approx. 3 months, so that breaks down to 33.33 rmb per month (or roughly $5-6)

Food would have been less, but I really like cheese and peanut butter, and those are expensive. I had to forgo butter, but that's because I couldn't find it in my city.

Miscellaneous covers everything else - shampoo, soap, haircuts, clothing, etc.

------------
I also lived in Los Angeles for several years; below was my LA budget. I was really poor and only made $900 a month.

Rent: $325      (my portion of rent in apartment with three roommates)
Food: $100      (lots of eggs, avocados, buying fruits and veggies at the 99 cent store)
Car insurance: $100 (Geico)
Gas: $120        (drove clear across town twice a week, tried to carpool as much as possible)
Car maintenance: $30
Cellphone: $30
Miscellaneous: $50
TOTAL: $755    (annual expenses of $9060)

I don't have precise numbers for 2015, but if I extrapolate from Jan-Apr, I will hit around $11.5k (possibly lower if I manage to cut down on food and shopping expenses). $10k is my stretch goal!

Rent (1 bedroom in a 2br apt): 410
Eating out and groceries: 250
Healthcare (most of it from payroll deductions): 100
Shopping (home/kitchen furnishings, clothing, books): 80
Utilities (internet, electric, coin laundry, mobile): 60
Recreation (memberships, outings, equipment): 30
Travel (bus trips): 20
Commuting (bike repairs/subsidized bus pass): 10

I've been averaging around $6,000 / year for the last couple of years.

This year I'm targeting $5,000 annual spending, my budget looks like this:
$215 HOA dues
$122 property taxes (paid bi-annually)
$50 food
$30 utilities

I live downtown in a high cost of living city in the US. However, my budget is low because:
1. I own my own condo and have no mortgage payments
2. I have access to a significant amount of free food
3. All my recreational activities are either free or very low cost
4. I don't own a car and have a free bus pass

I don't know if 1,000/mo target is useful (as compared to 10K/ann) but here is me for 5/1/2015 through 5/1/2016.
Rent + utilities: $3900/yr caretaking a house for a friend who was out of the country for half of this time period. Compare to $1300/mo avg. rent for a 1 bdrm in my city.
Groceries: $1200
Insurance: $2000 (health, auto, general liability, and error & omissions)
General merchandise: $2115 (clothes and the like)
Restaurants: $700
Non-categorized atm/cash: $600
Automotive: $500 (a hobby)
Cell phone: $490
Gasoline: $300

Looking back on an average of $1000 per month.Without children and with a girlfriend who is not a big spender either, there isn't that much more I want to spend on (some woodworking and auto hobbies could add 200-300$ per month). I still feel like my spending is mostly care-free but I find it hard to cut much out (restaurants is the easy one). In other words I found my 'natural' level of spending and it would take substantial effort for it to go much high or lower.
