Title: A High Stake Challenge For the Boss Himself
Post by: OWHL on August 08, 2012, 08:25:13 PM
I challenge MMM to do a TED Talk. Hopefully everyone who reads this will help me get a petition going. Unless he already has one...? Perhaps even other Mustachian readers will take the bold journey onto the red stage of TED!

I've suggested he do an Ignite talk as well... I'd guess he's not ready for the big stage yet though :)

I would sign said petition.

But how does one get an offer from the Ted?

I was also thinking he might partner with Annie Leonard of the Story of Stuff, to make a cartoon about frugality and how it breaks the cycle that the Story of Stuff talks about.
I actually know her neighbor, so maybe if he was interested, I could try to get something going...

An MMM Ted Talk would make my life! That would be unbelievably epic.

I found the nomination form (http://www.ted.com/nominate/speaker). It looks like they want previous speaking experience by the nominee that's been viewed by the nominator. Maybe a Denver mustachian or Nords could nominate him after FINCON this year? Or anyone else, if he's recorded. (hmm... on that note has anyone listened to the MMM interview on Mad FIentist (http://www.madfientist.com/mr-money-mustache-interview/)?)

Actually I listened to it yesterday, coincidentally enough.

He definitely sounds Canadian.  ;)

Nomination after FINCON is a great idea.

Dammit! I knew I shouldn't have been drinking beer during that interview with the Fientist - always brings the Canadian accent right back out again! :-) .. Although Canadians now accuse me of having a Western US accent so maybe it is somewhere in between?

I like the idea of the TED talks. Right now I'm having fun thinking about the little talk I'm giving at the Financial Bloggers Conference just to a roomful of other internet nerds.

We'll see how much fun it is. I have no experience giving big, organized and polished business-oriented presentations. I write up the material in advance, but I refuse to practice and prefer to just wing it. My only proof that this is a reasonable approach is a couple of "best man" speeches I made up for weddings that people seemed to like. All this haphazardness might annoy people who are used to seeing REAL presentations.

But anyway, I'm honored by the idea, so thanks for suggesting it.

Further Excuse: I don't really need any more stuff to do right now, so there will be no imminent sign-ups happening (if I add even one more activity to life, I'd have to drop writing on the blog to accommodate it). But if the fincon speech is really fun, and my son continues to need less of my time as he grows up, I'll definitely do more of the silly showman stuff.

A TEDx talk at Boulder (http://tedxboulder.com/event-information/) would have been a great opportunity, but this year's speaker nomination form ended last week. :(

I was just about to start a thread saying exactly this - MMM needs to do a Ted Talk! Spread the word! Share your story!

How did you enjoy the speech at the Financial Bloggers Conference?

Wow! This thread is from a long time ago, and somehow I just stumbled across it again.

That presentation at the 2012 Fincon was a LOT of fun. Also, I was wrong about my predicted approach: I ended up planning that one out in detail and practicing the shit out of it for weeks in advance.

So it took a lot of time, but it really paid off (and good thing, because it ended up being to a room of 400 people rather than just a couple dozen as I expected!)

But now that I know these things take even MORE time, I'm even less inclined to do them - fun, or not.

10 years hence, when my boy is an 18-year-old, THEN I have time for silly stuff like speaking engagements. But for now, he just fell asleep, which means I need to get to sleep too since I know we're getting up early as usual :-)
