Moving slower this year, but have listened to a lot of podcasts in lieu of audiobooks. Also read so many technical manuals (but those don't make it on the list). I guess I'm on track for 40 books at this rate, so I might need to increase the rate (or read some short books)!

1. Unaccountability Machine - Dan Davies
2. Piranesi - Susana Clarke
3. Tales from Out There: The Barkley Marathons, The World’s Toughest Trail Race - Frozen Ed Furtaw
4. The Fuller Memorandum - Charles Stross
5. REDACTED
6. The Apocalypse Codex - Charles Stross
7. The Rhesus Chart - Charles Stross
8. The city and it's uncertain walls - Haruki Murakami (audiobook)
9. Where Wolves Don't Die - Anton Treuer (audiobook)
10. It's not the end of the world - Hannah Ritchie

11. Home Body - Rupi Kaur (poetry)
12. The sun and her flowers - Rupi Kaur (poetry)
13. Reconciling History - Jodi Wilson Rayboult (audiobook)
14. Making Love to the Land - Joshua Whitehead

What a weird mixture of books this year - lots of Canadian stuff, lots of pulpy sci-fi, and a handful of non-fiction. I appreciate this challenge so much :)

Raises hand! I do.

Do any of the books travel to the Middle Ages? I need to read a book set in the Middle Ages for my library challenge and was planning to read something from Ellis Peters’ Brother Cadfael mystery series, but time travel plus history sound fun too.

I love Jodi Taylor's books so much. Hilarious, and sneakily wise about human nature.

Bit of a fantasy streak - and I won't be breaking that with the next one either. But next month I'll get back to some sci-fi and nonfiction.

The Valdemar series was one of Lackey's weaker series, I thought. Weird pacing, hit you over the head moralizing, "Easter Eggs" that stood out a mile away and detracted from the story. Disappointing, I usually enjoy her for solid, fast reads. I also didn't enjoy the Vicious/Vengeful series as much as the rest of Schwab's work, just didn't vibe with it. It's been a disappointing month for reading.

Sequels: 9
TBR: 5

1. Something Rotten (Thursday Next #3) -Jasper FForde -" magical creatures that aren't dragons"
2. Ghostwritten -David Mitchell- (audio book)  " interconnected short stories"
3. Anathem-Neal Stephenson- "nontraditional education"
4. The Devil and the Dark Water-Stuart Turton "set in or around a body of water"
5. The Chaos Machine: The inside story of how social media rewired our minds and our world-Max Fisher (audio book) nonfiction
6. The Blue Hour-Paula Hawkins 'two books with same title #1"
7. The Blue Hour-Laura Pritchett "two books with same title #2"
8. The Mistletoe Mystery- Nita Prose (novella) "book under 250 pages"
9. The Mirror and the Light-Hilary Mantel (Thomas Cromwell #3)  "politician", "chronic pain" or "married couple who don't live together".
10. Silver in the Wood-Emily Tesh (novella) "silver on the cover or in the title"
11. The Six: the untold story of America's first women astronauts-Loren Gush (audio book) nonfiction "a book about an overlooked woman in history"
12. Girl, Woman, Other-Bernadine Evaristo another series of interconnected short stories,  "a book where an adult character changes careers"
13. Green Frog-Gina Chung (short story collection) "POC experiencing joy not trauma"
14.The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes-Suzanne Collins "snake on the cover or in the title"
15. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo-Taylor Jenkins Reid "book about a road trip"-there's a road trip in there anyway
16. A City on Mars: Can we settle space, should we settle space, and have we really thought this through? by Kelly Weinersmith and Zach Weinersmith (audio book) nonfiction "a book about space tourism"
17. Normal Women: 900 years of making history-Philippa Gregory (audio book) nonfiction
18. Beowulf, a new translation-Maria Headley "a book by the oldest author on your TBR pile" -read aloud with my son
19. The Thursday Murder Club-Richard Osman "a book with a nonverbal character"
20. The Lost City of the Monkey God-Douglas Preston (audio book) nonfiction. "a book that takes place at a luxury resort"-part of it does anyway
21. Orbital - Samantha Harvey "a book that could be considered healing fiction" this is more of a philosophy book with fictional characters there for convenience. no real conflict happens but the writing is very good. I actually had to put it down a couple of times because I was getting vertigo.
22. Normal People-Sally Rooney "a book about soccer" it's actually about relationships but there's a soccer scene so it counts.  I did not like the beginning but it got better.
23. Les Miserables by Victor Hugo "a book you've always avoided reading" additionally my son challenged me to read something over 1000 pages. There were some parts that were more engaging and some that required a bit of patience. I put it down a few times and read several of the short books I've listed while I was also reading this.
24. Ghostwalk-Rebecca Stott "a book with less than 3 stars on Goodreads" it actually has 3.08 but close enough. this had potential but could have used better editing.

25. The Three Body problem-Liu Cixin "a book about a cult". I liked this enough to want to read the rest of the series
26. Born to Run: A hidden tribe, superathletes, and the greatest race the world has never seen- Christopher McDougall (audiobook) nonfiction "a book about a running club"
27. The Women-Kristin Hannah "a book with a happily single woman protagonist" this captured the historical details and some of the emotional conflict well but the characters were a little flat. I found her writing style to be very plain and quick to read, similiar to Ken Follett's.
28. The Familiar-Leigh Bardugo "a book that features an unlikely friendship" a historical romance with fantasy elements. Not terrible but also not my usual thing.
29. Stolen Focus: why you can't pay attention and how to think deeply again- Johann Hari (audiobook) nonfiction. This was not bad. I like that he emphasized how this is a systemic problem and individual solutions won't work.
30. Nonverts: The making of Ex-Christian America- Stephen Bullivant (audiobook) nonfiction. This was interesting.
Spoiler: show
the main point was that people with weak religious ties used to feel like they needed to claim an affiliation because of cold-war prejudice against atheism, and now they feel no such need. The percent of actually practicing religious folks hasn't really changed much.

31. King:a Life-Jonathan Eig (audiobook) nonfiction. New biography focusing on MLK's private life. The audiobook narrator was really good.
32. The age of magical overthinking: Notes on modern irrationality-Amanda Montell (audiobook) nonfiction. not bad but also nothing really earth-shattering here
33. Wilmington's Lie: the Murderous Coup of 1898 and the rise of white supremacy-David Zucchino (audiobook) nonfiction. Some local history. The author used a lot of direct quotes from primary sources so the language was really hard to listen to in the audio version. It was interesting and also slightly sickening to be able to place events with local landmarks, especially as some roads and even an elementary school near my house still have the coup perpetrators' last names on them . there is an epilogue about how modern republicans are trying some of the same voter suppression and intimidation tactics that were used back then.
34. Nature's Mutiny: How the little ice age of the long seventeenth century transformed the west and shaped the present, Philipp Blom. nonfiction. This is my kid's special interest but he decided it was too long so I read it for him and told him the highlights.
35. James-Percival Everett "a highly anticipated novel of 2025" delightful short read. I want to reread Huckleberry Finn now so I can compare the two.
36. Termination Shock-Neal Stephenson "a book where nature is the antagonist" this was not bad but for the length it didn't seem to have as much happening as his other ones that I've read

An interesting story, after reading a couple of chapters. But make a name list when you read, because so many characters have pretty similar names, from my perspective.

13. Ship of Destiny by Robin Hobb (god I love this series!!)
14. Siegfried by Harry Mulisch (DNF - really liked the concept but once a writer starts writing about how great and smart writers are... and then drag in every other writer, composer or philosopher to make long-winded analogies... I'm out)
15. Het verlangen by Hugo Claus (DNF - got real gross real fast. Did my best to read at least 20 pages but damn, I should've tossed it after 5)
16. Voor wie ik liefheb, wil ik heten by N.M. Min
17. Het bloemenmeisje by Anya Niewierra [DNF, dragged myself to page 189 and decided it wasn't worth the next 200)
18. De elementen by Harry Mulisch - surprisingly fun

21. Wegwijs in de wijsbegeerte by C.A. van Peursen (DNF)
22. Wat blijft komt nooit terug by J. Eijkelboom

24. Fenrir by Hella Haasse
25. The complete Sherlock Holmes, volume 1 of 2 by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - I loved this so much!

I enjoyed reading Tilt last week.  I met Emma Pattee at an MMM camp years ago in Florida so I was thrilled to learn via the NYT that her first novel was published. This gift link to the review should take you there:

28) Imaginable: How to Create a Hopeful Future by Jane McGonigal
29) The Half Known Life: In Search of Paradise by Pico Iyer
30) Blind Drunk: A Sober Look at Our Boozy Culture by Veronica Woodruff
31) The Year of Less:  How I Stopped Shopping, Gave Away My Belongings, and Discovered Life Is Worth More Than Anything You Can Buy in A Store by Cait Flanders

All these were interesting in very different ways.
