15. The Witched by Roald Dahl

Do you mean The Witches?  Did you see either movie version of the book?

Yes, The Witches! I saw Matilda when I was a kid, but not The Witches - I didn't even know they made it into a movie,. I imagine it's nightmare-fuel. These books are both part of my Popular Books I Haven't Read Yet challenge. I've had fairly shit luck with that project so far, but these two were good.

1. The Rediscovery of America: Native Peoples and the Unmaking of US History by Ned Blackhawk
I'm hoping to read this later this year - how did you like it?

Very interesting. I learned the most during the portions on colonization pre-American government formation. Also very dense, so it took me a long time to read. Especially at night - I would get through only a couple pages before falling asleep!

Added to my TBR! Last year I listened to the audio version of Roxanne Dunbar Ortiz's "an Indigenous  People's History of the United States " which I found rather interesting and educational.

1. Metro 2033, by Dmitry Glukhovsky.
2. Metro 2034, by Dmitry Glukhovsky.
3. Drømmer av bronse (Dreams of bronze), by Camilla Läckberg.
4. Det Kinesiske Rommet (The Chinese Room), by Jan Grue.

DNF: Bergakrypten, by Kaj Skagen. Too long sentences, very tiresome to read.

5. Uromomenter (Moments of Unrest), by Jan Grue.

13. Ship of Destiny by Robin Hobb (god I love this series!!)
14. Siegfried by Harry Mulisch (DNF - really liked the concept but once a writer starts writing about how great and smart writers are... and then drag in every other writer, composer or philosopher to make long-winded analogies... I'm out)
15. Het verlangen by Hugo Claus (DNF - got real gross real fast. Did my best to read at least 20 pages but damn, I should've tossed it after 5)

That's two duds in a row... well, at least that's two more books out of my house after giving them a fair shot.

The books I've least enjoyed so far have been books that are considered Dutch 'literature'. Small wonder kids are reading less and less... if this is what's mandatory in high school, I'd never develop a love for reading.

Holy, you folks are tearing through books right now.

Isn't it wild? At least for me it goes in waves. I knit Christmas presents for nearly all my family members so by January I need a knitting break and read lots of books instead. Especially while trying to maintain my sanity during a two week "vacation" at my MIL's house...

I always read a ton of books in January as well. I tend to read a lot of shorter books early on to get a good start on my reading challenge, and then read chonkier stuff later on.

5) Tigana by Guy Gabriel Kay

Very funny. Only a wrong translation into Norwegian of a mushroom name. I think they used the Swedish name.

After sitting on it, I have to say that House of Flame and Shadow has to be one of the worst edited books I've read. Bouncing around subplots and viewpoints like crazy - I swear it once changed viewpoint characters three times in three pages. And this was in the first third of the book, not the climax where so much is going on! It really felt like the author/editor felt there wasn't enough tension, so the only way to keep the reader's attention was to keep jumping to wherever something was happening.

One down so far!

Longitude - Dava Sobel

I’d often pondered how ancient mariners knew where they were in the days before GPS etc. and it turns out they didn’t until the longitude calculation problem was solved.

A fascinating read, and on the first sunny noon I get at home I’m totally going in the backyard to measure and time shadows and determine my longitude by my own calculations vs. my iPhone’s (even though (spoiler alert) I’ll probably use the phone as the accurate clock needed to do this)

2. Kill the Farm Boy (DNF) - Delilah S. Dawson, Kevin Hearne.
3. The Lightest Object in the Universe - Kiki Eisele

Pretty dang good. A post-collapse setting, which felt a little on the nose right now, but without any of the penny dreadful plot points. Just people trying to rebuild community.

I am going for 120 this year. Trying to read a couple of short books for every long one in furtherance of this goal:) I hit exactly 103 last year and the year before. I'm also going to try the pop sugar challenge that was mentioned up thread as an incentive to try things I wouldn't normally read.

1. Something Rotten (Thursday Next #3) -Jasper FForde -" magical creatures that aren't dragons"
2. Ghostwritten -David Mitchell- (audio book)  " interconnected short stories"
3. Anathem-Neal Stephenson-I enjoyed this one a lot-for the challenge it will either be "nontraditional education" or "road trip"
4. The Devil and the Dark Water-Stuart Turton "set in or around a body of water"
5. The Chaos Machine: The inside story of how social media rewired our minds and our world-Max Fisher (audio book) nonfiction, highly recommend, not too US centric, explains a lot of political situations around the world
6. The Blue Hour-Paula Hawkins 'two books with same title #1" I did not like this one too well but it was pretty fast to read. I think I'm just not wild about this genre.
7. The Blue Hour-Laura Pritchett "two books with same title #2" this one was better, though different from what I normally read.
8. The Mistletoe Mystery- Nita Prose (novella) "book under 250 pages" not as good as the main series, should have been a subplot in one of the other books
9. The Mirror and the Light-Hilary Mantel (Thomas Cromwell #3) this seemed much slower than the other two books in the series due to rehashing of previous events, plus I had made the mistake of checking Cromwell's wikipedia page after the first book so I was dreading the end. I enjoyed the series as a whole though and I'm glad I finished it. For the challenge this will be either "politician", "chronic pain" or "married couple who don't live together".
10. Silver in the Wood-Emily Tesh (novella) "silver on the cover or in the title"
11. The Six: the untold story of America's first women astronauts-Loren Gush (audio book) nonfiction "a book about an overlooked woman in history"
12. Girl, Woman, Other-Bernadine Evaristo another series of interconnected short stories, I liked the creative use of punctuation "a book where an adult character changes careers"
13. Green Frog-Gina Chung (short story collection) "POC experiencing joy not trauma" (there is loss and grief with the joy but not big T trauma)

13. Maisie Dobbs, Jacqueline Winspear
14. Birds of a Feather, Jacqueline Winspear

I hope you like this series. I'm a fan of it.

It's really fun so far! Have you read the Mary Russell series by Laurie R. King? That's set in a similar era with a somewhat different premise (she becomes Sherlock Holmes's apprentice!) but the mysteries are great and it also features a strong female problem solver.

The Witches movie is absolutely nightmare fuel. I saw it as a kid and cannot go anywhere near it, even now

Thanks for the tip.  Have not read or heard of the series.  Will definitely give it a try

Ugh, y'all! I don't know if it is everything going on in the world, but I can't even find a book I want to read. I wandered the library for 20 minutes this afternoon and left with two re-reads.

Oh boy, I have gotten stupidly behind on posting here since I was travelling. Catch-up batch:

21. The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden
22. The Girl in the Tower by Katherine Arden

Really excellent Russian fantasy, had to put off finishing it to due travel but looking forward to it now.

23. Matilda by Roald Dahl

24. The Last Unicorn by Peter Beagle

I loved the film version of this as a kid and the book is phenomenal. Probably one of the most true to form book adaptations out there.

25. The Night Ends with Fire by K.X. Song
26. Hatchet by Gary Paulsen

27. Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card

This was shockingly good and I can't believe I haven't read it yet. Will definitely continue the series soon.

28. Murder at Spindle Manor by Morgan Strang
29. Voyage of the Damned by Frances White
30. The Pearl by John Steinbeck
31. Cuckoo: Cheating by Nature by Nick Davies
32. Soul Fraud by Andrew Givler

33. Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee

This translated ancient Chinese murder mystery was fascinating, written originally in the 1700s and based on the cases of a real-life 7th century magistrate. The translation notes and background information are excellent as well. REALLY unique work.

34. The Lion Women of Tehran by Marjan Kamali
35. Chimera's Fall by Glynn Stewart
36. The Crash by Freida McFadden
37. Meet Me by the Fountain: An Inside History of the Mall by Alexandra Lange

* At this point I got on a plane and it's Southeast Asia relevant reads only *

38. The Teller of Small Fortunes by Julie Leong
39. The SEA Is Ours: Tales of Steampunk Southeast Asia by Nghi Vo
40. Fathomfolk by Eliza Chan
41. The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi
42. The Last Mapmaker by Christina Soontornvat
43. The Last Phi Hunter by Salinee Goldenberg
44. The Girl and the Ghost by Hanna Alkaf
45. Rupert Wong, Cannibal Chef by Cassandra Khaw
46. Cyberpunk: Malaysia by Zen Cho
47. The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo
48. Bone Weight and Other Stories by Shih-Li Kow
49. Ministry of Moral Panic by Amanda Lee Koe
50. These Deathless Shores by P.H. Low
51. TOYOLS 'R' US by Terence Toh
52. The Scarlet Throne by Amy Leow

I had an absolute heap of library books turn up in my absence, so I'm set for the next couple weeks at least. My immediate queue is mostly new releases, plus some more popular books, and a few nonfictions.

oh I hope you find something that speaks to you @StarBright . It comes in waves for me.
I started the year strong and inspired but am in the midst of a few harder-to-get-into books..one of which I will DNF.

10) Everybody: A Book About Freedom by Olivia Laing

11) Dayswork by Chris Bachelder and Jennifer Habel (fiction) *verry interesting structure. Enjoyed immensely but will mostly appeal to people who have read Moby Dick/have an interest in Melville

DNF: In the Lives of Puppets by TJ Klune (really enjoyed The House in the Cerulean Sea but it appears I am not in the mood for robots)

Popsugar challenge
10) A book centering LGBTQ+ characters that isn't about coming out
11) A book set in or around a body of water

7. None of This is True by Lisa Jewell

8. The Marigold by Andrew F. Sullivan. I need to be better about quitting books. This one took me forever to get through because I didn't really like it, so I'd read a few pages and then start scrolling on my phone.

1. The life impossible - Matt Haig
2. Kill the Farm Boy (DNF) - Delilah S. Dawson, Kevin Hearne.
3. The Lightest Object in the Universe - Kiki Eisele
4. The Messy Lives of Book People (DNF) - Phaedra Patrick
5. Run the Storm - George Micheleson Foy

A book about the sinking of American flagged ship El Faro. I work on the ocean, and it’s always fun to read about my trade. The first part of the book dragged, setting the scene. The section about the error chain is dreadful to experience second hand. Like watching a video of the sea sucking back before the Christmas tsunami, and wanting to scream “run” to people long dead.
