COMPLETED

13. Gwendy's Final Task by Stephen King and Richard Chizmar (book 3 in the trilogy)
Bittersweet ending, and very much of the time. Set in 2026, Senator Gwendy basically goes into space and saves the world(s).

14. As I knew him : my dad, Rod Serling by Anne Serling
Youngest daughter of the creator of The Twilight Zone shares a glimpse into her father's life, but it definitely focuses on him and once she was born, their relationship. I knew he died quite young and tragically and a few bits and pieces of his incredible drive and of course LOVED his shows (also Night Gallery) but seeing him through her eyes really surprised me. Lovely and sad.

I thought Spare was good and if even half of the events happened as Prince Harry describes, then the British media is absolutely reprehensible.

1. So Good They Can't Ignore You (Cal Newport)
2. The Death and Life of Great American Cities (Jane Jacobs)
3. The Simple Path to Wealth (JL Collins)
4. Brave New World (Aldous Huxley, re-read)
5. The Midnight Library (Matt Haig)
6. Happy City (Charles Montgomery)
7. The Fault in Our Stars (John Green)
8. How to Be Perfect (Michael Schur)

Had a very slow February as I DNFed a couple books and got back into an old videogame that ate into a lot of what could have been reading time. Too much early '10s YA cringe in The Fault in Our Stars for me to really love it, but I didn't hate it.

How to Be Perfect was fun. Felt a little more dumbed down than I needed it to be, but still, I learned some stuff, so I guess I'm still dumb (:

15. The Motion Picture Teller by Colin Cotterill
Thailand, 1996 : Supot, a postman with the Royal Thai Postal Service, hates his job. The only bright light in his life is watching classic movies with his best friend, Ali, the owner of a video store. These cinephiles adore the charisma of the old Western stars, particularly the actresses, and bemoan the state of modern Thai cinema until a mysterious cassette, entitled Bangkok 2010, arrives at Ali's store. Bangkok 2010 is a dystopian film set in a Thailand run by chauvinistic Security Council officers and Supot and Ali, immediately obsessed, agree it's the most brilliant Thai movie they've ever seen. But nobody else has ever heard of the movie, the director, the actors, or any of the crew.

Next 20, favourites marked:

61. Dread Locks by Neal Shusterman
62. The Dark Side of Nowhere by Neal Shusterman
63. Full Tilt by Neal Shusterman

64. Seducing the Sheriff of Nottingham by Cassandra Gannon
The fifth book is the hilarious Wicked Ugly Bad comedy/fairytale/romance series, and it's as perfect as all the others. This series is so funny I can't read it in public because I just end up sprawled out cry-laughing trying not to piss myself.

65. Anthony Bourdain: The Last Interview by Helen Rossner
66. Downsiders by Neal Shusterman
67. Vanessa Yu's Magical Paris Tea Shop by Roselle Lim
68. If Cats Disappeared From the World by Genki Kawamura
69. Hawking's Hallway by Neal Shusterman
70. Lazerwarz by Mercedes Lackey
71. The Shadow Club by Neal Shusterman

72. These Infinite Threads by Tahereh mafi
The second book in on of my favourite fantasy series of all time. I just love all the characters, world, lore, magic, everything about it.

73. Red Rider's Hood by Neal Shusterman
74. Tempest by Mercedes Lackey
75. Unsavory Truth: How Food Companies Skew the Science of What We Eat by Marion Nestle
76. Ducking Ugly by Neal Shusterman

77. Salvation on Sand Mountain: Snake Handling and Redemption in Southern Appalachia by Dennis Covington
A shockingly good deep-dive into snake churches, I could not put this one down. This journalist really pulled out all the stops to tell this story.

78. The Shadow Club Rising by Neal Shusterman
79. A Practical Guide to Conquering the World by K.J. Parker
80. Dead Reckoning by Mercedes Lackey

It's probably fairly obvious from my last couple posts, but I'm now almost finished the Shusterman portion of my backlog challenge - only one more series to go, the Star Shard Chronicles. Lots more Parker and Lackey to go - I suspect Lackey in particular will probably take most of the year, since it's only a portion of my reading. My other challenges are going well too. I'll do a big goal recap once I hit 100.

17.  Wild Irish rose: A Molly Murphy Mystery by Rhys Bowen
Same as 16; and also same as far as seeing where the plot was going and it wasn't a shocker. Light, fast read.

18. Murder on Astor Place (Gaslight mystery #1) by Victoria Thompson
Another period mystery, this time it's lead is a widowed nurse/midwife who has left her very posh family after her sister was disowned and later died (married an unsuitable working man, died in childbirth). Set in 1900s New York. Fast read and seems like the Rys Bowen stuff I was reading earlier, just slightly different cast of characters. Plucky smart woman in a period setting working to better herself and those around her, runs into someone (usually police/detective) that doesn't believe women should be doing ~stuff~ then they end up working together and solving mysteries. And it appears, (spoiler, not really) eventually married. So if you like that sort of thing, it's definitely that.

19.  In The Time of Our History by Susanne Pari
Reluctantly returning home to observe the first anniversary of her sister's death, Mitra, banished by her controlling father due to her rebellious nature, confronts hard truths from her past and that of her sister, a process that forges an unexpected path forward with her mother, who has always been caught in the middle. Iranian/Persian family. Very good but heartbreaking. WARNING: infidelity and sexual abuse/assault mentioned. It's fiction, but you just know there are likely many real life versions of this that played out over the years.

20.  The Spite House by Johnny Compton
A father and his 2 kids on the run from - something?  - answer an ad to live in a supposed haunted house in order to try to prove it's actually haunted by the rich and eccentric owner. I liked it but felt it needed more fleshing out in areas and it left me feeling like I didn't get a satisfactory conclusion. It's decently written with some interesting horror/supernatural twists tho, so I'd still say it was worth the read.

2.  Ill Will, by Dan Chaon (Jan 13).

3.  Project Hail Mary, by Andy Weir (Jan 27).

4.  Foster, by Claire Keegan (Jan 28).

5.  We All Want Impossible Things, by Catherine Newman (Feb 2).

9.  The Book of Form and Emptiness, by Ruth Ozeki (Feb 18) (audio).

10.  Girlhood, by Melissa Febos (Feb 22) (audio).

11.  Dinosaurs, by Lydia Millet (Feb 23).

12.  Ancillary Sword, by Ann Leckie (Mar 4) (audio).

13.  The Sparrow, by Mary Doria Russell (Mar 6).

14.  The Curse of Chalion, by Lois McMaster Bujold (Mar 20) (audio). Nicely done heraldric fantasy with unique characters. Really liked the narrator, who was very expressive (Lloyd James).

15.  The Self Delusion: The New Neuroscience of How We Invent—and Reinvent—Our Identities, by Gregory Berns (Mar 22). This has revealed a flaw in the format of my to-read list, to which I have not been able to add critical notes or source of recommendations.  This results in me often not remembering why I have a book on my list or whose recommendations I end up really liking by the time I get to the book years after adding it to the list. And in this case, I realized about 1/3 of the way in that I was reading the entirely wrong book.  There's one also called The Self Delusion on consciousness and the hard problem that I'm hoping I like a lot better than this one.

I'm running a little ahead of my book limit for the year, which is bad news - anticipating vacations this summer where I'll read a lot more - so I need to prioritize other things...and read longer books, haha, but I also can't sort my to-read list by page length.  I know I have a few 700+ page books on there, though!

21. Rules for Vampires by Alex Foulkes
YA novel about a young (in vampire years) girl trying to achieve her first kill, and making a royal mess of it. After creating not one, but two ghosts - the lonely vampire makes friends with one ghost to take out the other, and hopes to avoid her family discovering her mistakes before she is able to fix things. I liked it but was definitely more young than young adult. Still, it was a fun read and there were a few times I laughed out loud and nicely written/plotted overall.

22. Scarlet (The Lunar chronicles #2) by Marissa Meyer
Loved this. Scarlet (little red riding hood) is trying to locate her grandmother, who has been kidnapped. She befriends a fighter named Wolf who is not as he seems. Cinder (from #1) is on the run, having escaped from prison and the Lunar Queen has decreed that if Cinder isn't found and turned over to her immediately, she will declare war on the Earthans. Cinder and Scarlet end up discovering their past and connection and joining forces. I'm quite enjoying the series. Well written and fun.

1. So Good They Can't Ignore You (Cal Newport)
2. The Death and Life of Great American Cities (Jane Jacobs)
3. The Simple Path to Wealth (JL Collins)
4. Brave New World (Aldous Huxley, re-read)
5. The Midnight Library (Matt Haig)
6. Happy City (Charles Montgomery)
7. The Fault in Our Stars (John Green)
8. How to Be Perfect (Michael Schur)
9. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (Stephen R Covey)
10. A Wizard of Eathsea (Ursula K Le Guin)
11. Four Thousand Weeks (Oliver Burkeman)

Finally read 7 Habits since it is so incessantly recommended/referenced... and man, what a bunch of tepid platitude-filled garbage. Sure, the core ideas contained within are generally not wrong, but there is just so much wasted text and padding to make obvious ideas seem more meaningful than they really are.

Wizard of Earthsea is a frequent comfort re-read for me, and it's as good as ever. Honestly I just get more out of it every time. Four Thousand Weeks was very topical for some current anxious ruminations, and I'm sure I'll be coming back to it in the future.

According to Goodreads I'm currently right on schedule to hit 50 for the year, but I haven't been doing great at reading consistently lately.

First hundred down, woo hoo!

81. Ghost 19 by Simone St. James
82. The Crane Husband by Kelly Barnhill
83. Cobalt Red: How the Blood of the Congo Powers Our Lives by Siddharth Kara
84. Wrestling for My Life: The Legend, the Reality, and the Faith of a WWE Superstar by Sean Michaels
85. Backpacking Through Bedlam by Seanan McGuire
86. The Pot Thief who Studied Georgia O'Keefe by J. Michael Orenduff
87. The Pot Thief who Studied Edward Abbey by J. Michael Orenduff
88. The Pot Thief who Studied the Woman at Otowi Crossing by J. Michael Orenduff
89. How Fast Did T. Rex Run?: Unsolved Questions from the Frontiers of Dinosaur Science by David Hone

90. Children of the Night by Mercedes Lackey
Really excellent urban fantasy/mystery, I am such a sucker for music-based plots.

91. The Bobby Gold Stories by Anthony Bourdain
92. Get Jiro! by Anthony Bourdain
93. Instinct: An Animal Rescuers Anthology by various authors (this one is being sold as a fundraiser for a puppy rescue in Colorado, which I think is super cool)
94. Jinx High by Mercedes Lackey
95. Phantom Architecture: The Fantastical Structures the World's Great Architects Really Wanted to Build by Philip Wilkinson
96. Now You See Us by Balli Kaur Jaswal
97. Silence by Mercedes Lackey
98. Sword of Ice by Mercedes Lackey
99. Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave by Frederick Douglass
100. The Limpopo Academy Of Private Detection by Alexander McCall Smith

My three challenges are all going really well:

1. Complete the Pot Thief Series Challenge

It is complete!

2. Read 50 Nonfiction Books Challenge

I'm at 18, which is well ahead of the game.

3. Backlog Challenge (read/attempt all older unread works by three favourite authors, Neal Shusterman, Mercedes Lackey, and K.J. Parker)

I've finished up everything by Neal Shusterman, which was 16 books. I'm probably finished with K.J. Parker, at 13 read, just finding most of his older stuff just isn't doing much for me, DNFd quite a few - may give it a few months and then attempt the Fencer trilogy and Two of Swords, the last remaining unread/unattempted ones. I am still flying through Mercedes Lackey's stuff, having read 14 so far this year, with a bunch more lined up.

23. Pigs Don't Fly by Mary Brown
A old (published in 1994) fantasy novel, about Summer the young woman left an orphan with a small dowry and a magic ring, all she wanted was to find a husband and settle down. But the blaspheming dog, broken-down horse, crippled pigeon, half-dead tortoise and flying pig had ideas of their own, and Summer was to find her journey's end very different from what she expected. I used to read stuff like this all the time in high school, and it was in a little free library and caught my eye. It was a very well written fun story, and while I didn't like the bit of fat shaming (the main character is fat in the early days and thinks herself quite the ugly duckling but of course ends up turning into a thin and beautiful swan by the end of the book) but it still was a nice enough story overall for the time period it was written in.

DID NOT FINISH

The Tatami Galaxy: A Novel by Tomihiko Morimi
It seemed okay, but just don't have the right headspace to read at the moment.
