1.  A Particular Kind of Black Man, by Tope Folarin (Jan 3) (audio).

2.  Ill Will, by Dan Chaon (Jan 13).

3.  Project Hail Mary, by Andy Weir (Jan 27).

4.  Foster, by Claire Keegan (Jan 28).

5.  We All Want Impossible Things, by Catherine Newman (Feb 2).  Really, really good.  I laughed, I cried actual tears more than once.  It didn't feel as quite as perfect as Foster, but I would recommend it to more people, I think.

8. The last Mrs. Summers by Rhys Bowen (Her Royal Spyness series, book 14)

9. Cinder by Marissa Meyer (The lunar chronicles, book 1)
LOVED this. It's a dystopian Earth, with Cinders the cyborg working as a robot repairer in the slums, trying to earn money for her adopted family, where her stepmother and one of her stepsisters dislikes her, but her little stepsister and the house robot are her best (and only) friends. She is considered less than human and the world is fighting a plague that has no cure once contracted. It's Cinderella, but a really cracked glass view and I am greatly looking forward to reading the others in the series.

10. God Rest Ye, Royal Gentlemen by Rhys Bowen (Her Royal Spyness series, book 15)
Another lovely fast read - mystery set at xmas, with lots of the English country house flavor and the actual Royal family thrown in.

IN PROGRESS

Gwendy's Final Task by Stephen King and Richard Chizmar (book 3 in the trilogy)

The Left-Handed Booksellers of London by Garth Nix

The Tatami Galaxy: A Novel by Tomihiko Morimi

1. So Good They Can't Ignore You (Cal Newport)
2. The Death and Life of Great American Cities (Jane Jacobs)
3. The Simple Path to Wealth (JL Collins)
4. Brave New World (Aldous Huxley, re-read)
5. The Midnight Library (Matt Haig)
6. Happy City (Charles Montgomery)

Brave New World is a genuine classic. As for Happy City: I keep thinking I'll get less out of reading more urbanism books as they've got to be redundant at a point, but the question of how built environments can be designed for human thriving just has an endlessly fascinating assortment of answers.

15) Effortless Mindfulness by Loch Kelly (audiobook): needed something peaceful to listen to while walking and just learned about this teacher on the Waking Up app.

19. Carrie Soto is Back by Taylor Jenkins Reid
20. The Stolen Book of Evelyn Aubrey by Serena Burdick
21. Bridgertons Happily Ever After by Julia Quinn
22. Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld

I feel like I am reading too fast- but my brain is really just flying through text lately. Any other fast-ish readers experience something like this? If I get out of the reading habit it takes time to read quickly, but I've been reading at a good clip for the last couple of years and I almost feel like I'm having a hard time slowing down.

I might pick some heftier reads to force myself to take my time.

Otherwise, I feel like I'm mostly striking out so far this year. Carrie Soto was the first book that I really enjoyed.

Just finished Prep by Sittenfeld and whew!  As a LMC Hoosier who went to college with a bunch of east coast boarding school kids, that book was a journey. I'm glad I didn't read it when I was 22 or I would have been a sad pile of mush at the end. Reading it as a fully formed adult let me appreciate it without overly identifying with the protagonist. Excellent book though.

4.  Foster, by Claire Keegan (Jan 28).

5.  We All Want Impossible Things, by Catherine Newman (Feb 2).

6.  Ancillary Justice, by Ann Leckie (Feb 8) (audio).

7.  Don't Cry, It's Only Thunder, by Paul G. Hensler with Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston (Feb 13).

8.  Things I Have Withheld, by Kei Miller (Feb 15).  A thought-provoking and well-written collection of essays.  The author is empathetic and relatable (even across many types of divides).

9.  The Book of Form and Emptiness, by Ruth Ozeki (Feb 18) (audio). I am sorry to say that I really, really did not like this book.  It was compounded by the narrator's terrible voices for the two main characters in particular.  I really loved A Tale for the Time Being by this author but have not enjoyed (now) two other books of hers, so I think I am going to give up on her and also never read the Time Being again in case it doesn't click for me on a second reading and I lose my good memories of it.

Impressive yall!

I certainly couldn't do it! I'm currently reading the WOT series, and I do about 1 book every 3-4 weeks I think.

How much time to you guys devote to reading? Do you have a set time in the day? Catchall at night after all activities/chores completed? Saturday longhaul on the couch? combination?

I usually read about 4-6 hours a day, but don't really have a fixed schedule. I tend to read less on Saturday because I do a lot of bulk chores and cooking for the whole week.

I hit 60 a few days ago but was travelling and computerless, and didn't want to type it all out on my tablet. So now that I'm home, next 20, favourites marked:

41. The Pot Thief who Studied Billy the Kid by J. Michael Orenduff
42. The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood
43. The Lunatic Express: Discovering the World . . . via Its Most Dangerous Buses, Boats, Trains, and Planes by Carl Hoffman
44. The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells

45. The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa
A beautiful book about a cat travelling around and learning about the owner's friends and history. It made me cry and I'm not a big book crier.

46. Five Stories High by K.J. Parker
47. Tesla's Attic by Neal Shustermen
48. How to Rule an Empire and Get Away With It by K.J. Parker

49. Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke, and Other Misfortunes by Eric LaRocca
A really sick and twisted collection of horror short stories, absolutely loved it.

50. Elvendude by Mark Shepherd

51. Nemesis of Mars by Glynn Stewart
I love the starship's mage series so much, and it's great to have another Damien adventure, after the series overall shifted towards other characters. The new story arc should be really good.

52. The First Signs: Unlocking the Mysteries of the World's Oldest Symbols by Genevieve von Petzinger
53. The Battle of Medicine Rocks by Rachel Aaron

54. Rabid: A Cultural History of the World's Most Diabolical Virus by Bill Wasik
A stunningly good non-fiction about all things rabies. I could not put this down.

55. Edison's Alley by Neal Shusterman
56. Trial of the Alchemist by Trevor Melanson
57. Burning Water by Mercedes Lackey

58. Wildblood by Lauren Blackwood
A fantastic jungle adventure with lots of assholes getting killed in nasty ways. Big fan of both of this author's two books so far and I hope she keeps writing.

59. The Translator: A Tribesman's Memoir of Darfur by Daoud Hari
60. Spiritride by Mercedes Lackey

I love reading stuff with my kids and I absolutely count the books I read with them as long as they are chapter books. One of my favorite series I read last year ended up being a middle grade series.

6.  Ancillary Justice, by Ann Leckie (Feb 8) (audio).

7.  Don't Cry, It's Only Thunder, by Paul G. Hensler with Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston (Feb 13).

8.  Things I Have Withheld, by Kei Miller (Feb 15).

9.  The Book of Form and Emptiness, by Ruth Ozeki (Feb 18) (audio).

10.  Girlhood, by Melissa Febos (Feb 22) (audio).  Painful and excellent.  Although my own girlood was almost completely different than the author's, I had all the same feelings and thoughts.  Trying to get all my female friends to read it now to see how universal the experience is, regardless of the facts of one's upbringing.

11.  Dinosaurs, by Lydia Millet (Feb 23).  Loved this a lot.  Restrained and a little mysterious.  I couldn't quite tell why I was so eager to read it every time I picked it up, but I definitely was.

MAIN LIST

1. The Magpie Lord: Charm of Magpies (book 1) by KJ Charles

3. Leech by Hiron Ennes
4. Crowned and Dangerous by Rhys Bowen (Her Royal Spyness series, book 10)
5. On Her Majesty's Frightfully Secret Service by Rhys Bowen (Her Royal Spyness series, book 11)
6. Four Funerals and Maybe a Wedding by Rhys Bowen (Her Royal Spyness series, book 12)
7. Love and Death Among the Cheetahs by Rhys Bowen (Her Royal Spyness series, book 13)
8. The last Mrs. Summers by Rhys Bowen (Her Royal Spyness series, book 14)
9. Cinder by Marissa Meyer (The lunar chronicles, book 1)
10. God Rest Ye, Royal Gentlemen by Rhys Bowen (Her Royal Spyness series, book 15)

COMPLETED

11. Peril in Paris by Rhys Bowen (Her Royal Spyness series, book 16)
Nice fast read and last to date of the series. Fully expect there will be more to come. The nice thing is they are advancing the age/lives of the characters at the same time and some of the historical events are coming more into play (the approch of WWII, Hitler and the events surrounding the monarchy and Prince Edward and Wallis Simpson are all mentioned over the last few books).

12. The Left-Handed Booksellers of London by Garth Nix
Magic, old spirits, booksellers and a YA sort of romancy plot. Set in 1980s England. Fast read, interesting characters. Pretty sure it's a series but will have to check.

IN PROGRESS

Gwendy's Final Task by Stephen King and Richard Chizmar (book 3 in the trilogy)

The Tatami Galaxy: A Novel by Tomihiko Morimi

I think I found them here too! I am very much hoping there will be more.

If you haven't the Maisie Dobbs series by Jacqueline Winspear, you might want to check those out as well as they are along the same sort of read/period. A bit heavier but still captivating characters and mystery set in England during war times. Also the Daisy Dalrymple mystery series by Carola Dunn (more similar to Her Royal Spyness in tone).

Finished another ten in February, but some of them were short:
11. The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
-a retelling of the Iliad that primarily focuses on the relationship between two of the characters.

12. The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls (audio book)
-eyebrow-raising memoir about growing up in poverty with parents who had severe mental health issues and alcoholism. The audio book is narrated by the author herself.

13. How to Talk so Kids Will Listen and Listen so Kids Will Talk by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish
-classic parenting book. I am trying some of the communication strategies with my kids.

14. The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi
-dystopian-future novel. Some of the science-fictiony elements were interesting but the depictions of sexual violence were a little too much for me. There is a whole debate in the comments section on goodreads about whether the whole thing is misogynist or not. The pacing was a little slow and could have done with better editing.

15. Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens
-romantic suspense novel set in the tidal marshes of North Carolina in the 1960's. Worth reading for the scenery.

16. Divergent Mind: Thriving in a World that Wasn't Designed for You by Jenara Nerenberg
-geared towards women with sensory issues and adhd. This provided a brief overview of many topics and was mainly useful for giving me a list of other things to read.

17.The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine by Michael Lewis (audio book)
-you guys have probably all read this already. I liked hearing about the personalities of all the people involved.

18. The Moon Sister by Lucinda Riley (seven sisters #5)
-I enjoyed the historical part of this novel but the modern day romance part was a little implausible and rushed. This series is nice because the books can be read in any order and still make sense (I have previously read 1, 2 & 6).

19. Had I known: Collected Essays by Barbara Ehrenreich
-It was cool to read some of her earlier articles from the 80's and 90's. The topics are still really relevant today. I found myself wanting to post links and start forum discussions on some of them, which I couldn't do with a hard copy lol.

20. Joyful: The Surprising Power of Ordinary Things to Create Extraordinary Happiness by Ingrid Fetell Lee (audio book)
-This is mainly about aesthetics and some of the psychology behind why people like certain things. There was nothing earth shattering but I did go to the author's blog after I was done listening to it, to get some home decoration ideas.

Reading-related question: I get my audiobooks from either the North Carolina digital library (choice to use Libby or Kindle) or from Hoopla (this is also via library subscription but it has it's own app). I've often been told by an audio book narrator to look at the "attached pdf" for a graph or something. Does anyone know how to access the supplementary materials (pdf's and such) on those platforms, or do library downloads not come with them?

On Libby there should be a paper clip icon when you open the audiobook. This contains the attachment https://help.overdrive.com/en-us/0452.html
