47) The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese *bookclub
48) Animal, Vegetable, Junk: A History of Food from Sustainable to Suicidal by Mark Bittman

recently finished/reading
49) 13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl by Mona Awad : within a few pages I wanted to stop but kept hoping for the turn-around..and there wasn't one. The protagonist was hurting, conflicted and overall I felt pretty sad by the end of it.

50) The Summer Book by Tove Jansson

51) Stones of Ibarra by Harriet Doerr

49. Black Swan Green by David Mitchell
-nice older work by this author

50. The Love Songs of W.E.B. DuBois by Honoree Fanonne Jeffers
-big family saga about an African American family in the southern US. I like how the narrative alternated between past and present.

51. Dark Earth by Rebecca Stott
-quick historical fantasy about medieval England. Nice twist on the mythological aspect and I really liked the positive representation of crows (they get a bad rap in just about every other book so it stood out).

52. The Dreamers by Karen Thomson Walker
-pandemic novel that was published just before the pandemic

53. Florence Adler Swims Forever by Rachel Beanland
-family drama set in the 1930's. Not bad but a bit slow.

54. Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond
-People who believe their lives are not difficult enough should read this book instead of the silly one about moose hunting. There is a nice afterward about how Desmond conducted the research and reconciled going back to his middle-class life after the project.

55. I Have Some Questions for You by Rebecca Makkai
-A sort of postmodern twist on 'murder mystery in the boarding school'. I did not like how this started but it got better.

56. The Mad Women's Ball by Victoria Mas
-Short and engaging novel about how women were treated in 19th century France.

57. Maame by Jessica George
-novel about a young woman from an immigrant community who starts her 'adult milestones' late after spending her early 20's caring for her ill father.

58. Salt Sugar Fat: How the food giants hooked us by Michael Moss (audio book)
-interesting history of food advertising in the 20th century US

59. Babel: An Arcane History by R.F. Kuang
-historical fantasy set in 19th century England, meant to be an allegory about colonialism. There were lots of details about word origins which I find interesting, but it bothered me that the characters didn't talk like they were in the 19th century.

60. The Dawn of Everything: A new history of humanity by David Graeber and David Wengrow (audio book)
-about how there was a lot more diversity in the power structures of ancient societies than what we were taught in school.

61. Plenitude: The new economics of true wealth by Juliet Schor (audio book)
-Describes ways to reconcile economic growth with environmental sustainability.  A bit dated now but still mostly relevant and definitely mustachian-adjacent.

62. The water will come: Rising seas, sinking cities, and the remaking of the civilized world by Jeff Goodell (audio book)
-title is self explanatory and I really liked the 'hook at the beginning.  It's good that there were perspectives from lots of parts of the world, but I got frustrated with the amount of filler (for example he describes what everyone is wearing and what the conference room he interviews them in is like). One disadvantage of audio is not being able to skim parts like that.

63. Slade House by David Mitchell
-a horror novella set in the same world as The Bone Clocks. I thought this made the ending too predictable but otherwise it wasn't bad.

64. The undoing project: a friendship that changed our minds by Michael Lewis (audio book)
-about the working relationship between Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky. Listened on a road trip and was not able to speed it up as much as I wanted so it felt a bit slow, plus I had already read one of Kahneman's books so the information was not all surprising.

65. The inner life of animals: Love, grief, and compassion by Peter Wohlleben (audio book)
-not bad but also not a lot of information that seemed new or surprising. Listened on a road trip and chose because I thought my son would like it but he fell asleep.

66. The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin
-sci-fi/fantasy about people who can control earthquakes and are persecuted as a result. Loved the social-science aspects (reminded me of Ursula Leguin's books). Will continue the series.

67. The Ghost Ship by Kate Mosse
-historical romance with representation of a transgender person. I have not read the previous books in this series but it works fine as a stand-alone.

1.  A Particular Kind of Black Man, by Tope Folarin (Jan 3) (audio).

2.  Ill Will, by Dan Chaon (Jan 13).

3.  Project Hail Mary, by Andy Weir (Jan 27).

4.  Foster, by Claire Keegan (Jan 28).

5.  We All Want Impossible Things, by Catherine Newman (Feb 2).

6.  Ancillary Justice, by Ann Leckie (Feb 8) (audio).

7.  Don't Cry, It's Only Thunder, by Paul G. Hensler with Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston (Feb 13).

8.  Things I Have Withheld, by Kei Miller (Feb 15).

9.  The Book of Form and Emptiness, by Ruth Ozeki (Feb 18) (audio).

10.  Girlhood, by Melissa Febos (Feb 22) (audio).

11.  Dinosaurs, by Lydia Millet (Feb 23).

12.  Ancillary Sword, by Ann Leckie (Mar 4) (audio).

13.  The Sparrow, by Mary Doria Russell (Mar 6).

14.  The Curse of Chalion, by Lois McMaster Bujold (Mar 20) (audio).

15.  The Self Delusion: The New Neuroscience of How We Invent—and Reinvent—Our Identities, by Gregory Berns (Mar 22).

16.  Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland, by Patrick Radden Keefe (Mar 31) (audio).

17.  Water Knife, by Paolo Bacigalupi (Apr 9).

18.  Madame Restell: The Life, Death, and Resurrection of Old New York's Most Fabulous, Fearless, and Infamous Abortionist, by Jennifer Wright (Apr 25) (audio).

19.  Ithaca, by Claire North (Apr 25).

20.  Home Before Dark, by Riley Sager (May 3).

21.  The Immortalists, by Chloe Benjamin (May 7).

22.  Fleishman Is in Trouble, by Taffy Brodesser-Akner (May 15) (audio).

23.  Hyperion, by Dan Simmons (May 18).

24.  Ancillary Mercy, by Ann Leckie (May 23) (audio).

25.  The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly, by Stephanie Oakes (May 24).

26.  The Dawn of Everything: A New History of Humanity, by David Graeber and David Wengrow (Jun 12) (audio).

30.  Trust, by Hernan Diaz (Jul 18).

31.  Dead-End Memories: Stories, by Banana Yoshimoto (Jul 30) (audio).

32.  The Heart's Invisible Furies, by John Boyne (Aug 2).

33.  The Lacuna, by Barbara Kingsolver (Aug 21) (audio).

Finally wrapped up two 900pp +/- books and ready for some faster-paced reads.

34.  Seveneves, by Neal Stephenson (Sep 2). I can't put my finger on how exactly, but Stephenson doesn't do as good a job at writing hard science into a novel as does Andy Weir. Still enjoyed the book, but would have benefitted from a stricter editor.

35.  The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, by Taylor Jenkins Reid (Sep 4) (audio). Finally read a book by this author that seems very popular the last few years.  Good beach read.

36.  The Way We Live Now, by Anthony Trollope (Sep 5). I felt like I needed to read something by Trollope, so now I have.  Seems like these two are often compared, so I'll just say I think I liked Middlemarch better.

56. Attention Span by GLoria Mark, PhD

The tagline is: Find Focus, Fight Distraction

Obviously it didn't work :)  Actually I liked it, but it also felt super corporatist, like she says an occasional digital detox is okay but you can't unplug forever because that isn't fair to your co-workers. I rolled my eyes at that. But I also appreciated the realism and she talks a lot about the mechanisms of why/when we get distracted due to brain/body responses.

47) The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese *bookclub
48) Animal, Vegetable, Junk: A History of Food from Sustainable to Suicidal by Mark Bittman
49) 13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl by Mona Awad
50) The Summer Book by Tove Jansson
51) Stones of Ibarra by Harriet Doerr

recently finished/reading
52) Built to Move: The 10 essential habits to help you move freely and live fully by Kelly & Juliet Starrett --basic sense but presented in an engaging way. Lots of practical 'mobilizations' which could be really helpful for some people.

53) Your Art Will Save Your Life by Beth Pickens (audiobook)-- I found this at the right time and thoroughly enjoyed it

54) Monsters: A Fan's Dilemma by Claire Dederer-- questioning how we can look at great art made by awful humans. Funnier than expected, also could be triggering. I'm not finished but really love her writing.

Shorter batch this time, as I'm officially at 300!

291. Exit Strategy by Martha Wells
292. Network Effect by Martha Wells

293. He Who Drowned the World by Shelley Parker Chan
The conclusion to She Who Became the Sun, this was just an excellent read. Mythology, scheming, politics, and really interesting and multi-faceted characters. Great book.

294. Mage-Queen's Thief by Glynn Stewart
295. What an Owl Knows: The New Science of the World's Most Enigmatic Birds by Jennifer Ackerman
296. Shenanigans by Mercedes Lackey
297. Burdens of the Dead by Mercedes Lackey
298. Fugitive Telemetry by Martha Wells
299. Eight Bears: Mythic Past and Imperiled Future by Gloria Dickie

300. The Soprano Sorceress by L.E. Modesitt
I'm loving this series following a singer-turned-sorceress teleported into fantasy world where music makes powerful magic. Can't wait to keep going with the series.

My reading challenges are going well. I'm 39 books ahead of my 365 goal, at 46/50 for my nonfiction challenge, finished my two "Complete the X Series" challenges, and down to the last seven Mercedes Lackey books on my backlog challenge. I am definitely going to do the 365, Nonfiction, and Backlog Challenges again next year - just need to pick three new authors I like with decent unread backlogs. Right now I'm thinking L.E. Modesitt and Cassandra Gannon for the first two, and I'll mull over the third spot for the last few months of the year.

JUST COMPLETED

35.  You Could Make This Place Beautiful by Maggie Smith (no not the actor, the poet)
Saw the Frugal Girl was reading and got it and read it in a 2 hour binge. Cried lots. Loved it despite the subject matter - she found out her husband cheated on her, and the subsequent divorce and finding herself and her voice again in the aftermath. I wonder over what the Frugal Girl has been dealing with in her own separation/divorce as she's not been real forthcoming in the why - but that is her story to tell or not and I just feel so sorry for anyone dealing with relationship issues due to my own near divorce situation.

36.  Murder on Marble Row by Victoria Thompson (Gaslight Series #4)

DID NOT FINISH

The Tatami Galaxy: A Novel by Tomihiko Morimi
It seemed okay, but just don't have the right headspace to read at the moment.

1.  A Particular Kind of Black Man, by Tope Folarin (Jan 3) (audio).

2.  Ill Will, by Dan Chaon (Jan 13).

3.  Project Hail Mary, by Andy Weir (Jan 27).

5.  We All Want Impossible Things, by Catherine Newman (Feb 2).

36.  The Way We Live Now, by Anthony Trollope (Sep 5).

37.  Mouth to Mouth, by Antoine Wilson (Sep 6). A short and fast-paced read, fun for those who love to ponder ambiguities.

38.  Trail of the Lost: The Relentless Search to Bring Home the Missing Hikers of the Pacific Crest Trail, by Andrea Lankford (Sep 20) (audio).  Interesting but jumped around too much not only between the three cases but within time in each of the cases and was hard to keep straight.  Also in the end didn't feel like it advanced anything: the cases themselves, the field of SAR or forensics, it was just someone's story that they chose to wrap up at an arbitrary point in time.

39.  The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet, by David Mitchell (Sep 25).  An epic novel and I largely enjoyed the journey.

60. The Nordic Theory of Everything by Anu Partanen

I REALLY enjoyed Nordic Theory of Everything. I thought it was very evenhanded in how she looks at Americans from an immigrant perspective, but there wasn't much new there other than the first person account. I enjoyed her voice a lot.

Outlive was okay. I liked it more than I thought I would. Attia distances himself from some of his earlier biohacking ideas, and the whole book seems basically reasonable. I read this one with my son who got very into the idea of longevity after watching the Chris Hemsworth series on NatGeo. Attia is in the series and I found him insufferable, but the book didn't have the same quality as the show.

40.  The Land of Little Rain, by Mary Hunter Austin (Oct 5). Very much like Walden Pond but for the Eastern Sierra (which she calls Sierras, which I was interested to learn because it's a much-argued point locally nowadays).

41.  Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage: Stories, by Alice Munro (Oct 9).  I have a hard time separating the content of many of the stories (which could be painful to read) with the quality of the writing.  Really, though, a lot of the stories are not so hard to read and are set in a time and with an economic class of people that are not often written about.

1. So Good They Can't Ignore You (Cal Newport)
2. The Death and Life of Great American Cities (Jane Jacobs)
3. The Simple Path to Wealth (JL Collins)
4. Brave New World (Aldous Huxley, re-read)
5. The Midnight Library (Matt Haig)
6. Happy City (Charles Montgomery)
7. The Fault in Our Stars (John Green)
8. How to Be Perfect (Michael Schur)
9. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (Stephen R Covey)
10. A Wizard of Eathsea (Ursula K Le Guin)
11. Four Thousand Weeks (Oliver Burkeman)

12. Of Boys and Men (Richard Reeves)
13. The Left Hand of Darkness (Ursula K Le Guin)
14. The Great Gatsby (F Scott Fitzgerald)
15. Slouching Towards Utopia (J Bradford DeLong)
16. Crime and Punishment (Fyodor Dostoevsky)
17. Golden Gates (Conor Dougherty)
18. Beautiful World, Where Are You (Sally Rooney)
19. Never Let Me Go (Kazuo Ishiguro)
20. Bewilderment (Richard Powers)
21. Autonorama (Peter Norton)
22. The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life (Erving Goffman)
23. Gilead (Marilynne Robinson)
24. Coventry (Rachel Cusk)
25. One Billion Americans (Matt Yglesias)
26. Travels With Charley (Steinbeck)

27. Wanting (Luke Burgis)
28. Sea of Tranquility (Emily St. John Mandel)
29. Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow (Gabrielle Zevin)
30. Paved Paradise (Henry Grabar)

31. We Need to Hang Out (Billy Baker)
32. Dostoevsky Reads Hegel in Siberia and Bursts Into Tears (László F. Földényi)
33. Notes from the Underground (Dostoevsky)
34. The Shallows (Nicholas Carr)

Haven't updated in a hot minute, so this is quite the catch-up. According to Goodreads I'm behind schedule to hit 50 by the end of the year - reading too much Substack and not enough books! But it is fascinating how much this stuff all ties together. Secularization (Foldenyi, Robinson), car-dependency (Norton, Grabar), and the internet (Carr) turning more of us into lonely narcissists (Baker, perhaps an under-tone in Zevin). The wide-open world of possibility overwhelming us with the desire to have everything (Burgis, Mandel).

The Steinbeck is of course a fascinating historical document from any number of perspectives, including these ideas of progress and disorientation at the pace of social and technological change. Also makes me think of Asteroid City and Past Lives, which have been my favorite movies of this year thus far.

Idk if anyone else listens to the podcast Philosophize This, but he's recently done a couple fascinating episodes on the ideas of the Korean-German philosopher Byung-Chul Han, which seem to tie a lot of these ideas together nicely, so I want to read some of his work soon. Also have more library holds following up on Dostoevsky and Hegel, and Rene Girard's book on Dostoevsky is doubly relevant since the Burgis book "Wanting" is largely about Girard's ideas.

Only 45 more books to go to hit 365!

Also loved Four Thousand Weeks!

What'd you think of the Mate? Listening to him on some podcasts, I've been torn between whether he's brilliant or if he's fallen to just selling pop psychology bullshit that makes readers feel special.
