28) Vesper Flights by Helen McDonald** (essays)
29) Early Retirement Extreme: A Philosophical and Practical Guide to Financial Independence **by Jacob Lund Fisker
30) I May Be Wrong: And Other Wisdoms From Life as a Forest Monk by Bjorn Natthiko Lindeblad (bookclub)
31) Vitamania: How Vitamins Revolutionized the Way We Think About Food by Catherine Price
32)Status Anxiety by Alain de Botton
33) Hilma af Klint: A Biography by Julia Voss

recently finished/reading

34) Tracks: A Woman's Solo Trek Across 1700 Miles of Australian Outback by Robyn Davidson. An astonishing personal/adventure story. I thought her writing was superb. Many members of my bookclub hated it due to perceived harshness of the environment and her cynicism but I found it a true reflection on difficult emotions (written in the 70's, it's also a different era of media, racism and misogyny)..

35) The Longing for Less: Living with Minimalism by Kyle Chayka  Enjoying this. A bit more of an intellectual take on minimalism than a lot of recent books..still easy to read but coming from a slightly different angle which I am appreciating

Next 20, favourites marked, getting into some unusual stuff as I'm in Europe right now trying to fit in some relevant reads:

141. The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth
142. The Red Market: On the Trail of the World's Organ Brokers, Bone Theives, Blood Farmers, and Child Traffickers by Scott Carney
143. Ironclads by Adrian Tchaikovsky

144. The Fairy Bargains of Prospect Hill by Rowenna Miller
I really loved this new fantasy/magical realism release. So charming and cozy, and I'm a huge sucker for any books that weave poetry into the story.

145. The Housemaid's Secret by Freida McFadden
146. Spirits White as Lightning by Mercedes Lackey
147. Changing the World by Mercedes Lackey
148. Finding the Way by Mercedes Lackey
149. A Cast of Corbies by Mercedes Lackey
150. Mad Maudlin by Mercedes Lackey
151. The Witches of Karres by James Schmitz
152. The Mist by Stephen King
153. Under the Vale by Mercedes Lackey
154. Werehunter by Mercedes Lackey
155. Music to my Sorrow by Mercedes Lackey
156. Bedlam's Edge by Mercedes Lackey

And the relevant reads to far:

For the flight over:
157. Hostage by Clare Mackintosh

England:
158. Spare by Prince Harry

France:
159. The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (really, really good)
160. The Enormous Room by E.E. Cummings

4.  Foster, by Claire Keegan (Jan 28).

5.  We All Want Impossible Things, by Catherine Newman (Feb 2).

6.  Ancillary Justice, by Ann Leckie (Feb 8) (audio).

7.  Don't Cry, It's Only Thunder, by Paul G. Hensler with Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston (Feb 13).

8.  Things I Have Withheld, by Kei Miller (Feb 15).

13.  The Sparrow, by Mary Doria Russell (Mar 6).

14.  The Curse of Chalion, by Lois McMaster Bujold (Mar 20) (audio).

15.  The Self Delusion: The New Neuroscience of How We Invent—and Reinvent—Our Identities, by Gregory Berns (Mar 22).

25.  The Sacred Lies of Minnow Bly, by Stephanie Oakes (May 24).

34) Tracks: A Woman's Solo Trek Across 1700 Miles of Australian Outback by Robyn Davidson

recently finished/reading

35) The Longing for Less: Living with Minimalism by Kyle Chayka *enjoying, a layered approach to minimalism which is refreshing

36) The Last Winter by Carrie Mac (bookclub): a small mountain town is struck by tragedy, the main character has bipolar disorder and everything is chaotic. Didn't particularly enjoy but made for a good discussion.

37) Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind by Shunryu Suzuki (audiobook). Listening to this while drawing, most of it is going straight over my head but somehow that feels appropriate.

JUST COMPLETED

31. Hotel Paradise by Martha Grimes
I loved her original run of the Richard Jury pub series, but this one just seems a bit heavy on character development and the plot didn't grab me as strong. Sort of a gothic noir family run hotel with a long ago death and the young girl that is obsessed with finding out what happened. The characters are VERY eccentric overall. Okay read, but don't think I'm up for the other few books in this series.

32. How to Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix
Sister with a young child living out in Cali, mom and dad and neer do well little brother back home in small town. Parents killed in freak car accident, sister flies home and hopes to wrap up the estate as quickly as possible... but brother and her don't get along, and oh yeah, the family home is apparently haunted, and mom was a bit of a doll hoarder and made puppets and those might be part of it too. I enjoyed this, but I've enjoyed all of Hendrix's novels so far as they're a bit twisted but still have some great characters and very well written.

36. Taste by Stanley Tucci
37. Witch, Please! by Ann Aguire
38. Hestia Strikes a Match by Christine Grillo
39. The Late Americans by Brandon Taylor

Really liked Hestia Strikes a Match. It was a sweet little slice of life novel set amidst "The Second Civil War of the United States" in 2024. At first I thought it would be too flip, but it wasn't long until I appreciated the way the characters keep carrying on with the mundanity of life during a war.

I wanted to love The Late Americans because I love Taylor as an essayist and twitterer but it was only a good read for me, not a great one. Lightly interconnecting stories of mostly gay MFA grad students in Iowa, a class novel that can also read as dark academia adjacent but isn't really concerned with that aesthetic . Two chapters about female characters felt shoehorned in to me.

Tucci's memoir was lovely and a little snobby (in a way that I enjoy and stops just short of being insufferable to me). Nice read if you like food based memoirs.

34.  Murder on Gramercy Park by Victoria Thompson (Gaslight Series #3)
Two and three in the series, definitely can see a romance angle developing between the two main characters (Sarah Brandt, a midwife in turn-of-the-century New York City, and Sergeant Frank Malloy). Both of these had a decent plot and well written with some interesting period details thrown in. Solid enough series and will continue on as they are fast reads and entertaining.

17. Golden Gates (Conor Dougherty)
18. Beautiful World, Where Are You (Sally Rooney)
19. Never Let Me Go (Kazuo Ishiguro)
20. Bewilderment (Richard Powers)

Falling behind a bit - partially from playing games more instead of reading, partially because I keep choosing books that I like enough to not quit, but don't like enough to ravenously devour.

Golden Gates has been an absolute reading highlight of this whole year and I would recommend it to literally anyone. It might seem narrowly focused on the Bay Area, but it's really just using the Bay Area as a case study in discussing the national (and international for much of the developed world) housing crisis. Really puts things in a clearer historical frame while tying various threads together into an incredibly engaging narrative.

Aside from that, I guess I've been leaning into fiction a bit and did some re-reads. I hoped that maybe I had missed something about Left Hand of Darkness the first time around, because I love Le Guin and that book is often considered one of her best... but even on a second consideration, it just doesn't do nearly as much for me as many of her other books. I'm pretty mystified as to why people think it's a highlight/must-read out of her oeuvre.

Bewilderment is the third Richard Powers I've read since The Overstory had it's best-seller moment, and to my taste it was unambiguously the worst. Seemed overly simplistic and preachy compared to the complexity of The Overstory or Orfeo. The cynic in me says he probably rushed it out as fast as possible after The Overstory to cash in on his 15 minutes of fame.

@Splashncash - seeing Outline right at the top of your DNF makes me sad every time I scroll past one of your updates! I absolutely loved that book 🥲

Disappointed with how little I'm reading this year, this time last year I was nearly at 80. It's been a very busy year, and a lot of my reading time has been redirected to other things, plus I've been reading more classics from my TBR, which go slower than the fluffy fun stuff. In particular, I haven't had many rereads this year (only when picking up a sequel after a long time), which always pad the total with less effort. But still, I can't wait to get some of my reading time back once we finish getting the new house set up.

26. The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis

I saw this list of three in a row and thought it just seemed like a wonderful run of books to sink into and take time with and really ponder. Hope you enjoyed them! (I haven't read that Groff, but I really enjoyed Matrix).

Yes, I really enjoyed all three of those books, in completely different ways. If you're interested in reading more Groff, I'd recommend Arcadia and Fates and Furies. I think I've read all her books now and those two were my favorites.

161. The Dark Library by Cyrille Martinez

Excellent historical fiction taking place in 15th century France/Belgium, read it on the train ride between and it was so relevant. Would have loved to see the actual tapestries at the Musée de Cluny, but alas I was not in Paris this time around.

165. HHnH by Laurent Binet (this was just WEIRD)

Lives up to the hype, I could not put down this Italian historical fiction.

168. Bruges-la-morte by Georges Rodenbach

170. The Terraformers by Annalee Newitz

177. Ogres by Adrian Tchaikovsky
178. The Woman who Walked in Sunshine by Alexander McCall Smith
179. A Song of Comfortable Chairs by Alexander McCall Smith

180. The Will of the Many by James Islington
A quality start to a new epic fantasy series, definitely feels like the Licanius series, which I also loved.

40. Shadow of the Giant by Orson Scott Card
41. On Mystic Lake by Kristin Hannah
42. The Cottage by Danielle Steel
43. The Love Songs of W.E.B. DuBois by Honree Fannone Jeffers

So when I want to read something and am waiting on library holds I walk down to one of the little free libraries and just grab something - hence The Cottage by Danielle Steel and the Bean sequels.

I enjoyed the Bean books so much more than the Ender books. And I used to love me some Danielle Steel when I was a kid and so reading this one was comforting and nostalgic and I enjoyed it more than I expected.

but guys,

GUYS!

The Love Songs of W.E.B. DuBois was the best thing I've read in years. A friend had recommended it when I told her I was in a reading rut but it was so long that I didn't start it. Then I saw multiple twitter recs for it last week and decided it was time. Every time I put it down I would tell my husband "I am loving this book so much." I swear I said "The Great American Novel" like at least three times in as many days. It had everything: historical family epic, race, colorism, classicism, feminism, and a very likeable but realistically flawed protagonist and the most lived in supporting characters. Anyways - Yay!

37. The reason I jump: The inner voice of a thirteen year old boy with autism by Naoki Higoshida
-A short and interesting read in question and answer format from a child with limited speech who communicates by typing. I found the information quite useful.

38. Everything the light touches by Janice Pariat
-Finally something halfway interesting from "new fiction". A novel about botany and philosophy set in four different time periods in India and Europe. The information was mostly interesting and the structure is definitely ambitious, but the characters just sort of lecture each other so it felt like nonfiction crammed into the outline of a novel. It is not bad if your special interest is trees.

39. Educated by Tara Westover (audio book)
-a memoir from someone who grew up with survivalist parents and received no formal education but was able to teach herself enough to pass college entrance exams and leave the community. The most interesting parts were where she has to get over her own internalized prejudices about things like antibiotics or mini-skirts.

40. Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver
This was really good! Probably the best thing I've read all year.  It's a retelling of David Copperfield set in Western Virginia during the worst of the opioid epidemic, and empathetically covers modern versions of child abuse, poverty, addiction, all the problems that are still happening. The characters felt like real people. You don't need to have read the original to enjoy this but there are some "easter eggs" if you have.

41. 52 Ways to walk: the surprising science of walking for wellness and joy, one week at a time by Annabel Streets
-Basically a rehashing of other popular books on this topic including the author's own. I thought it would be motivational but I think I've reached a saturation point on this topic.

42. Jade Legacy by Fonda Lee (green bone saga #3)
-the third and last in this series. I will look for other books by this author.

43. Stamped from the beginning: The definitive history of racist ideas in America by Ibram X. Kendi (audio book)
-quite a history lesson. I had previously read the abridged version of this for a book club so it was interesting to hear more.

44. Dune by Frank Herbert
-I had never read this or seen any of the movie adaptations so it was totally new to me. It was alright but I didn't really love it. The world building and some of the ecology stuff was interesting and I know that it was written in the 60's when a lot of the tropes were new, but man there was a lot of time when the characters were just sitting around and talking and it took a long time for anything to actually happen, plus I thought the descriptions could have been better. Perhaps my expectations were too high.

45. How far the light reaches: A life in ten sea creatures by Sabrina Imbler
-A series of essays by a science journalist about being queer/nonbinary using sea creatures as metaphors. This was short and really interesting.

46. Piranesi by Susanna Clarke
-a short mystery about someone stuck in a labyrinth. The first part was a bit tedious but it got better as it went on.

47. Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan
-romantic comedy/satire. A good page turner.

48. Poverty by America by Matthew Desmond
-this explored the systems we have in place that keep rich people rich at the expense of keeping other people poor. There are a lot of topics in in that we have discussed on the forum before so I think it would be interesting to a lot of people here. I might start a separate thread about it. I especially appreciate that the last couple of chapters propose actual solutions unlike many other books about social issues.

Please do!  I read Braiding Sweetgrass and Poverty, by America back to back and now have many thoughts swirling in my head about the overlapping themes in these two books.
