79.  Nightcrawling, by Leila Mottley (Oct 30) (audio). Beautifully written but hard to read.  Based on true events, unfortunately.

80.  The Selfish Gene, by Richard Dawkins (Nov 3). Wanted to read this "classic" even if I'm 45 years or more late.  It's funny to read concepts so thoroughly argued that to us, nowadays, are like, "yeah of course, I get it already." I still did learn some things, esp. from the last (more recently added) chapters.

81.  The Crane Wife: A Memoir in Essays, by C.J. Hauser (Nov 4) (audio).  I wish I knew what this type of writing is called, if it has a name.  I feel like I'll look back on it as very much of this moment.  Worthwhile read.

The last chapter (just added in a very recent edition) does a quick overview of some of the stuff from that book, but he very firmly says the reader should put down this book and go read Ancestor's Tale instead.  Unfortunately I hadn't heard of it beforehand, maybe I just would have read it instead!

81.  The Crane Wife: A Memoir in Essays, by C.J. Hauser (Nov 4) (audio). I wish I knew what this type of writing is called, if it has a name.  I feel like I'll look back on it as very much of this moment.  Worthwhile read.

oohhh! I am so excited to see this. I read the original Crane Wife essay back in he pandemic before times in the Paris Review! I loved it so much I even shared it in my journal.

I agree with the bolded. It is more than memoir but not sure what I'd call it? I'm paraphrasing but this has stuck with me since I read it: "When men desire things they are passionate. When a woman desires things she is needy."

Off to my library right now!

Next 20, favourites marked!

341. Last of the Talons by Sophie Kim
342. Once Upon a K-Prom by Kat Cho
343. I Want to Die but I Want to Eat Tteokbokki by Baek Se-Hee

344. Beasts of a Little Land by Juhea Kim
This was a fantastic historical fiction covering 30 years in a tumultuous time in Korean history, from many different perspective, from Korean courtesans and gangsters to Japanese military officials. Really just a beautiful book. By coincidence, we were staying in the the exact neighbourhood of Seoul where most of the book took place.

345. The Forest of Stolen Girls by June Hur

346. Life Ceremony by Sayaka Murata
These short stories were so weird and creative and downright messed up, I could not put this down.

347. I Must Betray You by Ruta Sepetys
348. Launch Something! by Bae Myung-Hoon
349. Seasparrow by Kristin Cashore
350. True Dead by Faith Hunter
351. Earthlings by Sayaka Murate
352. Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See

353. The Cat Who Saved Book by Sōsuke Natsukawa
Basically a brilliant critique of Booktok and those subcultures from before it existed. Really a unique read.

354. This Might Hurt by Stephanie Wrobel

355. Gleanings by Neal Shusterman
Back into the world of Scythe, one of my all-time favourite series!

356. Lagoon by Nnedi Okorafor
357. Nyxia Unleashed by Scott Reintgen
358. Nyxia Uprising by Scott Reintgen
359. Kabu Kabu by Nnedi Okorafor

Next 20, favourites marked - so close to 400!

361. The Handsome Man's De Luxe Café by Alexander McCall Smith
362. Pulling the Wings Off Angels by K.J. Parker
363. The Book Charmer by Karen Hawkins

364. Notes on an Execution by Danya Kukafka
A deeply disturbing serial killer thriller, with the serial killer POV told in second person, which was really different. Good read.

365. The Fruit Hunters: A Story of Nature, Obsession, Commerce, and Adventure by Adam Gollner
366. The Book of Phoenix by Nnedi Okorafor
367. How High We Go in the Dark by Sequioa Nagamatsu
368. Edgewood by Kristen CIccarelli
369. The Plumber and her Billionaire by Larissa Vine (don't judge, I needed a book with a plumber character for a reading challenge and this is what I found after much searching, lol)
370. The Amulet of Power by Mike Resnick

371. The Pot Thief who Studied Pythagoras by J. Michael Orenduff
The first in a hilarious cozy mystery series about a pot thief, I was just constantly cracking up. Can't wait to read more.

372. The Stardust Thief by Chelsea Abdullah
373. The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining Women by Kate Moore

374. The Good Sister by Sally Hepworth
I loved this suspense/thriller following a hilarious autistic woman and her messed up family. Very twisty and totally gripping, I'm definitely reading more by this author.

375. The Toaster Project: Or a Heroic Attempt to Build a Simple Electric Appliance from Scratch by Thomas Thwaites
376. Death by Beach Read by Eva Gates
377. The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells

378. Look Who's Back by Timur Vermes
A really dark and sick/twisted comedy following the exploits of Hitler after waking up in 2011 Berlin. This one is very polarizing and a lot of people see it as an abomination that should never have been written, but I absolutely loved it.

379. Surrounded by Idiots by Thomad Erikson
380. Blackmail and Bibingka by Mia Manansala

88.  Never Saw Me Coming, by Vera Kurian (Dec 3). A great psychological thriller/murder mystery!

89.  The Anthropocene Reviewed, by John Green (Dec 6) (audio). A poignant and comforting read that is sweet, sad, happy and profound...misanthropic me almost feels like it was written by AI with a formula to just repeatedly pull our heartstrings.  But that's just how John Green is as a writer, I think.  Great for audio (content originates from his podcast).

91. The Winthrop Woman by Anya Seton
92. The Wonder by Emma Donaghue

93. This Is Not a Book About Benedict Cumberbatch by Tabitha Carvan
94. Laziness Does Not Exist by Dr. Devon Price

The (not) Cumberbatch book was a delight- it really is not about him, but there is a lot of cumbertalk: including an appendix that opens with the details of his actually having his appendix removed which I found to be funnier than it probably sounds here. The writer was very self-aware, the book was funny and moving, but you also probably need to more than marginally enjoy the existence of Benedict to get through it.

I thought I would like Laziness Does Not Exist, and I did enjoy the premise. While I fully believe burnout exists, the descriptions in this book felt deeper than that and more akin to a discussion on masking, which did not feel as applicable to me. It was also very personal and had a confessional style of writing and I pretty quickly picked up on the writer being both neurodiverse and misgendered as a youth.  (and the author's other book is about masking in autism so this is definitely the vernacular of their work). I am so glad this book exists for people though! And also I agree with the general idea of it and while it wasn't for me I appreciated the perspective it gave on a more marginalized experience.
