244. A Pocketful of Stars by Margaret Ball
245. An Opening in the Air by Margaret Ball
246. An Annoyance of Grackles by Margaret Ball

247. 1632 by Eric Flint
A shockingly good time-travel story following the lives of residents of a small West Virginia mining town who get transported to 1632 Germany during the thirty year war, and their efforts to survive and rebuild society.

249. Firefight by Brandon Sanderson
250. Mitosis by Brandon Sanderson

Coziest thing I've read this year. Her books are all just these absolutely lovely small-town, slightly magical stories.

253. A Prayer for the Crown-Shy by Becky Chambers
This series continues with another charming story as the monk and robot continue to travel and discuss philosophy, humanity, and the state of the world. This series is a treasure.

254. The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
A lush Mexican retelling of the classic H.G. Wells story. I read the original to prepare for this one and am glad I did.

256. Upgrade by Blake Crouch
257. The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis

Kept company with some excellent audiobooks while I am plowing through Middlemarch on the kindle for several weeks....

This has been on my TBR for awhile.  I will be interested in your appreciation (or not) for it.  Or even just an update while making your way through it.

64.  Sea of Tranquility, by Emily St. John Mandel (Aug 13) (audio).  So good!

So glad you liked it.  The final book of hers I am trying to read is The Lola Quartet.  Have you read it?

I was worried at first, with the florid Victorian language and the overall length, but I've actually really gotten into it (after the first hundred pages or so!) and am now very curious how things go with all the different characters (and there are quite a few).

No, but I added it to my list, it sounds fascinating!  Hopefully I'll be able to get a hold of it, I think you mentioned having a hard time?  I also still haven't read The Glass Hotel and meant to read that before SOT, but somehow ended up with this one first.

Yes, I have had trouble finding it!  I've tried the two library systems I have access to and tried a number of bookstores over the past year.  Never ordered it but it may come to that.

They are a fun and fast read and I think someone on here had recommended them. I greatly enjoyed them. :)

38. On a Pale Horse by Piers Anthony
I read this waaaaay back in my early teen years (the whole series) and loved it as I was very into sci fi and fantasy, but this didn't age well. I forgot the writing style that Anthony had sometimes lapsed over into treating his female characters as sex objects or filler. It's left me not very interested in reading further into the series.

75. The Plot by Jean Hanff Korelitz
76. The House Across the Lake by Riley Sager

I really enjoyed The Plot - it was both a stereotypically plotted thriller and literary at the same time. I think you get the most out of it if you read both genres. FWIW - my husband also read it and said he thinks you get more out of it if you don't regularly read thrillers because he was reading the book as meta commentary on writing and all of the sudden he found himself carried away by the narrative. So this book works on levels :)

But speaking of thrillers and plots - The House Across the Lake lost the plot big time and I thought the end was insane and I need to take a break from the genre.

I'm thinking of pulling out something quiet next. I still have Marilynne Robinson's "Jack" on my "to read" list. Other recommendations welcome!

And that makes 300! Will I reach 400 before year end? Maybe?

281. A Child of Magic by Margaret Ball

282. The Emperors of Chocolate: Inside the Secret World of Hershey and Mars by Joel Brenner
A fascinating deep dive into the chocolate industry, I found it riveting and so informative. My boyfriend was also a big fan.

283. Black Arts by Faith Hunter
284. Broken Soul by Faith Hunter
285. Dark Heir by Faith Hunter
286. Shadow Rited by Faith Hunter

287. Cautio Criminalis, or a Book on Witch Trials by Friedrich Spee von Langenfeld
This is one of the most interesting things I've ever read. Written by a Jesuit priest in the early 1600s, it's a fascinating question-and-answer-based argument against witch trials as they were conducted, and also an incredibly thorough look at how that whole system worked. The basis of logic he uses is so, so unique and fascinating, and it's a combination of logical reasoning and theology, with the theological parts treated as absolute fact (like making logical arguments for what the devil can and cannot do in certain circumstances, for example). Just a really excellent read.

288. Sophie Go's Lonely Hearts Club by Roselle Lim
289. This Vicious Grace by Emily Thede
290. The Lioness by Chris Bohjalian
291. UnBound by Neal Shusterman
292. Tea Time for the Traditionally Built by Alexander McCall Smith
293. Soul Taken by Patricia Briggs

294. Babel by R.F. Kuang
A really great new fantasy stand-alone where magic is based around translation and silver. Warning, lots of people die and it's very tragic

295. Everlost by Neal Shusterman
296. What Souls are Made Of by Tasha Suri
297. Dying for an iPhone: Apple, Foxconn, and The Lives of China's Workers by Jenny Chan
298. Don't Tao 'Bout Murder by Mona Marple
299. Here Today, Gone Tomato by Mona Marple
300. The Rare Metals War: the dark side of clean energy and digital technologies by Guillaume Pitron
