1. The Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle, cannot recall the translator
2. The Fifth Season (The Broken Earth 1), NK Jemisin
3. The Obelisk Gate (The Broken Earth 2)
4. Radical Acceptance, Tara Brach
5. The Stone Sky (The Broken Earth 3) - these were great!
6. Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu trans. Ursula K Le Guin
7. The History of Philosophy, AC Grayling
8. The Doors of Perception & Heaven and Hell, Aldous Huxley
9. The Hobbit, Tolkien
10. The Goldfinch, Donna Tartt
A bit late for the March update because I just finished two more books!

11. Human Transit, Jarret Walker
12. Strong Towns, Chuck Marohn
13. Capital in the Twenty-First Century, Thomas Piketty
14. For the Love of Men, Liz Plank
15. Go Tell It on the Mountain, James Baldwin
16. The Second Mountain, David Brooks
17. Suburban Nation, Andres Duany/Elizabeth Plater-Syberk/Jeff Speck

Putting my thoughts and reflections in my newly-founded journal because I just ranted out several paragraphs and I don't want to drop that wall of text in the middle of this thread. Hearty endorsements for Strong Towns, Capital in the 21st Century, For the Love of Men, and The Second Mountain. My reading list looks downright moderate these days, what's gotten into me? And quite non-fiction heavy - feels perhaps about time to read another communist utopia.

6.  Rogue Protocol (The Murderbot Diaries, #3), by Martha Wells (Jan 25) (audio).
7.  Conscious: A Brief Guide to the Fundamental Mystery of the Mind, by Annaka Harris (Jan 27) (audio).
8.  The Color of Magic (Discworld, #1), by Terry Pratchett (Jan 27).
9.  Enough.: True Measures of Money, Business, and Life, by John C. Bogle (Jan 31).

13.  Cold Mountain Path: the Ghost Town Decades of McCarthy-Kennecott, Alaska, by Tom Kizzia (Feb 11).
14.  The Maidens, by Alex Michaelides (Feb 25) (audio). Not bad murder mystery, but with far too many red herrings.
15.  Harlem Shuffle, by Colson Whitehead (Feb 27).  My expectations were too high, but it was still worthwhile.

DNF
Labyrinths: Selected Stories & Other Writings, by Jose Luis Borges.

26.  The Metamorphosis, by Franz Kafka (Mar 29) (audio).  My first Kafka.  I enjoyed it and will definitely do more.

27.  The Hollow Places, by T. Kingfisher (Apr 2) (audio).  An honest-to-god horror novel, and mostly well done!

28.  The Infatuations, by Javier Marias (Apr 3).  Super annoyed by, among other things, this male author writing a female main character that, bizarrely, would constantly say things about what "we women" think, none of which this woman has ever thought.  But the story and many ideas were good.  Such mixed feelings!

21. Buy Yourself the F*cking Lilies by Tara Schuster. I thought this would be brilliant after reading the intro, because it made me cry. I too was un-parented! But then the rest of the book was for someone much younger and single, ha ha. I skimmed many chapters. 3/5

22. Steal Like An Artist by Austin Kleon. Inspiring short read to kick-start my projects 5/5

23. It's Only Too Late If You Don't Start Now by Barbara Sher. Found this really dull and repetitive. I couldn't get anything out of it. 2/5.

Quoting myself so I can refer back to the previous book list...

COMPLETED

19. Miss Peregrine's home for Peculiar Children, by Ransom Riggs
Oh very good! And very pleased that it appears to have sequel/series! Great supernatural supposedly YA novel about a group of children and hidden magical worlds in our own mundane world... I felt it much more interesting than the Potter world, and I liked Harry Potter when it first came out.

DUDS

Shakespeare for squirrels: a novel by Christopher Moore
Just couldn't get into it. I may give it a try at a later date tho as usually I have loved the author's past work.

The Best of Me by David Sedaris
Tried. Really did. I though a few of the stories funny, but it just went on in the same vein and I just got soured on the judgy catty tone overall. Again, this is likely more of where I am than it being an author failing so may give it another chance later down the road.

TO READ

The winter of the witch: a novel by Katherine Arden (3rd book in Winternight Trilogy)
Devil house by John Darnielle
Hola Papi! : how to come out in a Walmart parking lot and other life lessons by John Paul Brammer
Hollow City by Ransom Riggs
Library of souls by Ransom Riggs
What my bones know : a memoir of healing from complex trauma by Stephanie Foo
Crying in H Mart : a memoir by Michelle Zauner
The maid : a novel by Nita Prose

...
12) What Artists Wear by Charlie Porter
13) The Science of Enlightenment: How Meditation Works by Shinzen Young **twice
14) The Way Out: A Revolutionary, Scientifically Proven Approach to Healing Chronic Pain by Alan Gordon and Alon Ziv (audiobook).
15) Poor Richard's Retirement: Retirement for Everyday Americans by Aaron Clarey
16) Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions by Dan Ariely
17) Talking To Strangers: What We Should Know About the People We Don't Know by Malcolm Gladwell (audiobook)
18) On Becoming An Alchemist: A Guide to the Modern Magician by Catherin MacCoun
19) The Gift of Our Compulsions by Mary O'Malley
20) The Reading List by Sara Nisha Adams (fiction, *bookclub)
21) Neurodharma: New Science, Ancient Wisdom, and Seven Practices of the Highest Happiness by Hanson, Rick
22) The Seed Keeper by Diane Wilson (fiction, *bookclub)
23) Eat A Peach: A Memoir by David Chang ( audiobook)

recently finished/reading

24) Just Ride: A Radically Practical Guide to Riding Your Bike by Grant Petersen (audiobook)--trying to get myself biking again (after years preferring walking) and heard this was an entertaining read.  It's slightly funny, for beginner riders.

25) Digging Out: Helping Your Loved One Manage Clutter, Hoarding, and Compulsive Acquiring by Michael A. Tompkins, Tamara L. Hartl --have a family member with a hoarding issue. This book advocates for a harm-reduction approach to helping a family member or loved one and is the most compassionate response I've read so far

26) Ragged Company by Richard Wagamese (*fiction)--four chronically homeless people discover the joys of cinema and then encounter a life-altering change in circumstances. A powerful read when you consider that the author spent time on the streets before becoming a well-respected writer

Some of y'all seem more on track for 100 books than 50! I'm enjoying the challenge, because it has kept me off the television so far, an I have found some new (to me) series that I am quite enjoying.

Completed:
  • Bewilderment by Richard powers
  • Same Kind of Different As Me (horrible, IMO, but read because it was recommended by someone at church)
  • The myth of closure by Pauline boss
  • B.L.E.S.S. (for work)
  • Lost In the valley of death by Harley Rustad
  • Atlas of the heart by Brene Brown
  • The Last Mrs Parrish by Liv Constantine
  • I'm Still Here: Black Dignity in a World Made for Whiteness by Austin Channing Brown
  • The Road by Cormac McCarthy
  • The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan
  • The Sweetness of a Simple Life by Diane Beresford-Kreuger
  • Babylon Berlin by volker kutscher
  • The Great Hunt by Robert Jordan
Unfinished:

  • On the road with st. Augustine by James KA smithreally interesting by quite a dense read, so it’s been hard to get through more than 20 pgs at a time
  • Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr
  • The Global Forest by Diana Beresford-Kroeger
  • TO Speak for the Trees by Diana Beresford-Kroeger
  • The Dragon Reborn by Robert Jordan

Labyrinths: Selected Stories & Other Writings, by Jose Luis Borges.

29.  Northern Spy, by Flynn Berry (Apr 7) (audio).  I enjoyed this book although it was extremely disconcerting that it was written as if, but never explained why, the Troubles had never really ended (even though the GFA definitely happened) or had started up again in a constant and violent way.

30.  Detransition, Baby, by Torrey Peters (Apr 8).  An engaging novel of literary fiction about trans women and family.

An interesting book, about that societies in the past weren't simple and on their way to become "civilized", after agriculture was developed.

10. The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. I'd never read this before. It was amusing but I didn't love it.

11. Bringing it to the Table by Wendell Berry. The format of this book wasn't my favorite (the first two thirds is an essay collection and the last third is excerpts from his novels), but it definitely made me want to read more of his books.

12. Finding the Mother Tree by Suzanne Simard. I really enjoyed this one.

13. The Unsettlers by Mark Sundeen. I loved this book. It centers on three couples who are living "the simple life" in different ways, but intertwines it with the history of various places and movements, as well as with the author's own life.

Quoting myself so I can refer back to the previous book list...

COMPLETED

20. The winter of the witch: a novel by Katherine Arden (3rd book in Winternight Trilogy)
Lovely finish to this trilogy. I loved the main character coming into her own and folklore/magic stuff was quite fun. There were some really sad/gory/tragic bits and I appreciate it wasn't all pretty and tied off with a neat little bow for the end of the series (?). I'll greatly miss the characters, which for me is a sign that I REALLY enjoyed it.

21. Hollow City by Ransom Riggs (second in the series of Miss Peregrine's home for Peculiar Children)
Great continuation of the series. I find the odd photos included to be both interesting and sort of a jarring intrusion to the story itself sometimes. It's a nice hook tho. Also, really seeing some similarities to Harry Potter and think this would be a GREAT substitute.

DUDS

Devil house by John Darnielle
I read about a third into the book and still hadn't really felt like I'd gotten to the real story... and felt sort of fooled into reading that far. I was expecting a bit more opressive/spooky atmosphere, a bit more in line with true crime stuff. I mean, Hell House for sure is similar in theory as far as the blurbs and I have read quite a few of both real true crime and fictional, and I guess I had expectations that didn't match this particular book. So not saying it was a bad book, just not hitting me right.

TO READ

Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman (REREAD FOR BOOK CLUB)

Hola Papi! : how to come out in a Walmart parking lot and other life lessons by John Paul Brammer
Library of souls by Ransom Riggs
What my bones know : a memoir of healing from complex trauma by Stephanie Foo
Crying in H Mart : a memoir by Michelle Zauner
The maid : a novel by Nita Prose

Quoting myself so I can refer back to the previous book list...

COMPLETED

22. Hola Papi! : how to come out in a Walmart parking lot and other life lessons by John Paul Brammer
A blogger I have followed for years - Mimi Smartypants - recommended this and it was a quick read. Funny, sad, well written essays about the author's life and experiences in relation to their journey to coming out and also finding themselves.

23. Library of souls by Ransom Riggs (3rd in the series of Miss Peregrine's home for Peculiar Children, appears to be 6 in the main series, plus a prequel, so 7 total)
I liked this one a bit more than the second one. I think that there was a whole lot more interesting character development, excitement, losses, redemptions, battles, and all that jazz. It kind of reminds me of the LOTR type of thing - lots of walking in the second, then we finally get to the meaty bits in this third story. It honestly felt like the series could have wrapped up nicely with this one, but I am pleased to see other books and added them to my reading list.

DUDS

None so far! Nice. :)

1. Improvement by Joan Silber.
It was ok, the title doesn't make much sense in my opinion
2. Die kleine Bücherei in der Church Lane by Rachael Lucas (The Telephone Box Library)
Nice to read. I liked that the protagonist saved enough money to change her life
3. Aufräumen für Faule by Rachel Hoffman (Unf*** your Habitat)
I wouldn't buy it but it helped a bit psychologally with all the chaos
4. It started with a secret by Jill Mansell
That was ok. Exactly the right kind of book to read before sleeping
5. Europa im Rucksack by Henriette Wich
very easy to read. I read it in a day in my work breaks. But a bit too much for teenagers

Questions for all the great readers:

1.  are most of your books short/easy reads?  Or are you spending hours per day reading?  Or are you exceptionally fast readers?

2.  When reading easy non-fiction, when you look back at your list of books later, do you remember anything about the plot?

I don't consider myself a 'great' reader, but I'm aware my count probably argues otherwise...

I read a mix of fiction and nonfiction, short and long, YA and adult.  I also read every day and am a fairly fast reader.  Easy/YA/rereads I can read 100-200 pages in a day.  More adult work or nonfiction, more like 50 pages.  I also usually have 2-4 books going at once, so I always have something to pick up no matter what mood I'm in.  Some days I'm not up for dense nonfiction or really philosophical fiction, so I have something easy to read instead.

Different books, I remember different amounts.  For fiction, whether easy or hard, I tend to remember the characters, the plot in broad strokes, and how the book made me feel/how much I liked it.  I'm not great at remembering details, but that's always been true no matter how many books I read in a year.

Non-fiction, it depends why I was reading it.  Reading history/biography, I'm usually not trying to deeply learn the topic, but bits and pieces stick in my memory.  Self-help type books, if they're good I'm trying to come away with 3-4 big picture ideas.  If they're not applicable to me, I don't worry about remembering much.  Philosophy/spirituality books I'm looking for thoughts that resonate, and letting the rest slide by.  Science I try to read more carefully, but I also read much less because it's hard to find good ones that aren't too pop-science.  Sometimes I take notes, if it's a book I particularly want to remember (usually good self-help, spirituality, and science).

Looking back at my list for last year, I remember at least a vague arc and an emotional impression from all the fiction.  The only ones that really run together are the mediocre self-help books, which I read mostly for entertainment.

Questions for all the great readers:

2.  When reading easy non-fiction, when you look back at your list of books later, do you remember anything about the plot?

ETA: Forgot to mention I don't do audiobooks, everything is physical except for a few e-books that I couldn't get from my library in hard copy.

I'm a fast reader and spend many hours a day reading. My average book length this year is 327 pages right now according to Goodreads, though there is a lot of variation - right now year to date my shortest book was an 84 page novella and my longest book a 780 page epic fantasy. I feel like "easy" vs "hard" books is very subjective so I don't know what mine would classify as, though I'm definitely not reading physics textbooks - and I do post everything I read here, so if you want to poke around and decide for yourself, feel free.

I have fairly good memory of books I've read. I have no trouble discussing shared books at length when I find someone who's read the same stuff I have. I suppose the exception would be if it was fairly mediocre and a long time ago.

I have a mix of book lengths and try to be discerning about what I listen to vs. read-read.  Nothing too complicated on audio, like books where there are 40 or 50 characters.  I don't read a lot lately - most days I only read a few pages before I fall asleep.  But I do try to set aside time on some days, and I've been doing audio a lot faster because I've been doing a lot of training hikes lately, so spend hours listening on the trail.  I just don't have that kind of time (or TBH attention span) for a written book lately.

I have often looked at my list of books read on Goodreads and said, "I read that?!" but usually only from like 4-5 or more years ago.  I would remember the broad strokes of everything I read last year, if not every detail.

27. The High Tide Club by Mary Kay Andrews [audio] Enjoyable tale 4/5
28. Rachel's Holiday by Marian Keyes [audio] I really enjoy Keyes' books. This one is about Rachel's trip to rehab. 4/5

I have been driving a lot so it's been all about the audio books, and they have to be light & fiction so I don't get tired!

1. I read a big mix. I tend to count YA I read with my son and I've also read a couple long (500+ pages) books this year. I am also a fast reader - mass market style books take me between 1-2 hours depending on the genre. And my kids are currently required to read 20 minutes a night for school, so I have a built in reading block in my day.

2. I looked at my list from last year and there are two books that I remember nothing about. If I went back and found my notes on them, I'm sure they would say something like "forgettable" or "meh" :) The books also fell between books that I really liked and I have strong memories of, which I bet also influences my recollection. I have one book on my list this year that I had to think about to remember. I bet I will have forgotten it by this time next year.
