@Zikoris Have you read Uprooted by Naomi Novik?  It's a fairytale retelling like Spinning Silver and I really enjoyed both of them.  Her Temeraire series is excellent too (Napoleonic War, but with dragons!), although I'm only 4 books or so into it so I guess I can't vouch for the whole thing.

Yep, Uprooted was my #94 this year! The dialogue was so funny.

“It was all right when I did it,” I said, “but when you did it, it was wrong. As though—you were following a trail, but a tree had fallen down in the meantime, or some hedge grew up, and you insisted on continuing on anyway, instead of going around it—” “There are no hedges!” he roared. “It comes, I suppose,” I said thoughtfully, speaking to the air, “of spending too much time alone indoors, and forgetting that living things don’t always stay where you put them.”

Goodness.  That last one was very nearly my first DNF of the year.  A semi-religious manifesto on "catalyzing" the "evolution" that is "seeking to emerge."  Last few chapters finally got some challenges and strategies facing local food development, but at such a high level and with no concrete examples that I doubt it's actually being helpful to anyone.  Really hard to get through.

1. The Farthest Shore, Ursula K. LeGuin (own, pre-2021)
2. Christmas Days, Jeanette Winterson (own, pre-2021, re-read)
3. Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen (own, pre-2021, re-read)
4. The Cauldron Cill Brighid Devotional Anthology, the Cauldron Cill (own)
5. The Fellowship of the Ring, J.R.R. Tolkien (owe, pre-2021, re-read)
6. The Biology and Ecology of Giant Kelp Forests, David Schiel and Michael Foster (library)

7. Egil's Saga, trans. Palsson (own, pre-2021). A good, slightly weird book.

8. Piranesi, Susanna Clarke (library). This book was so damn good. I'm actually considering buying it -- it's something I'd absolutely love to re-read.

9. From Yao to Mao: 5000 Years of Chinese History, Kenneth Hammond (borrowed). A good intro to Chinese history. I definitely learned things from this.

10. The Haunting of Tram Car 015, P. Djeli Clark (library). This is a gorgeous novella -- the worldbuilding is deep and enjoyable, the book is funny, and I really want to read more set in this world.

Goals:

10/52 books read overall
5/15 books I already owned pre-2021
1/6 natural history books

25.Anxious People, by Frederik Backman (May 19). I really disliked a previous book by this author, but his books are so loved that I thought I would try again. I've learned my lesson after hating myself for stubbornly insisting on finishing this book just in case.

So... you didn't like it?  ;-)

Did I encourage you at one point?  If so, sorry.  I do enjoy his work.  Did you not enjoy Beartown or Ove?  I couldn't read Beartown but could listen to it because the narrator was so good.  But, I shall not encourage you to engage with Fredrik any longer.

Not your fault at all!  A couple of my friends were really raving about it and then went down a full Backman rabbit hole with about 4 other books of his and were just raving and raving.  I told them how and why I did not like Ove, and they sort of agreed but then I guess not really because they did like that book.  And somehow I thought that might mean that I should try one more.  That and the almost unanimous love for all Backman books on Goodreads.  I don't think I usually depart from crowd opinion so strongly, but in this case, I guess I've truly confirmed I do.

It seems people have quite strong reactions to this writer--I was really irritated by this book for 3/4 of it (a bookclub choice or else I likely would have stopped reading it), and somehow my feelings shifted in the last 1/4. It was strange that I ended up enjoying it after being fed up with the characters for most of the book :)

36) The Wisdom of Frugality: Why Less Is More - More Or Less, Emrys Westacott
37) In Love with the World: A Monk's Journey Through the Bardos of Living and Dying, Helen Tworkov and Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche --
38) The Second Book of the Tao, Stephen Mitchell

recently finished/reading

39) Think Like A Monk: Jay Shetty : recommended by a co-worker, it was an accessible book and I can see why he is a popular internet personality. I personally preferred In Love With the World (#37)

40) The Vanishing Half, Brit Bennett *bookclub, this was an interesting concept -- twins who lead very different lives after one choses to pursue an white-passing identity shift.

41) Chop Suey Nation: The Legion Cafe and Other Stories from Canada's Chinese Restaurants,  Ann Hui, easy reading but entertaining. The idea of  'bad but good Chinese food' places is ubiquitous but this author decided to drive across Canada asking the owners of restaurants (mostly in small towns) how they ended up there. It's a light but educational skim over some big issues: touches upon historical discrimination, immigration, and foodie inventiveness.

42) The Tao of Pooh, Benjamin Hoff, been meaning to read this for ages. Lighthearted and makes me want to revisit the original Winnie-the-Pooh books which I loved when I was young.

16. The Ministry for the Future, by Kim Stanley Robinson (Mar 27).
17. Shopgirl, by Steve Martin (Mar 27).
18. The Immortality Key: The Secret History of the Religion with No Name, by Brian C. Muraresku (Apr 18).
19. Sharks in the Time of Saviors, by Kawai Strong Washburn (Apr 22).
20. Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents, by Isabel Wilkerson (Apr 22) (audio).
21. In the Midst of Winter, by Isabel Allende (Apr 26) (audio).

24. Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World, by Jack Weatherford (May 13).
25. Anxious People, by Frederik Backman (May 19).
26. Piranesi, by Susanna Clarke (May 23).

27. Thirst: 2600 Miles to Home, by Heather "Anish" Anderson (May 26). A quick, interesting, sometimes painful, read about the author's (successful) attempt to set the FKT (Fastest Known Time) for the Pacific Crest Trail.  As a backpacker, I loved it, especially when she talked about terrain I know well and love.  But, I'm mystified as to how and why so many people seem to use backpacking and similar extreme sports/efforts to sort out their existential angst (see also, Wild by Cheryl Strayed among many others).  Maybe if I had more existential angst myself I could use it as fuel to do some more extreme or amazing things myself?

28. The Book of Unknown Americans, by Cristina Henriquez (May 27) (audio).  I loved this story, even though a couple of things really distracted me, from a larger theme of male fragility that I don't think was well-explored to small things (no spoilers, but them being so confident that the person who committed a significant crime would actually be held accountable for it?  No way.).  But still, it was beautiful.

Finished:

1.  Farmer Boy, by Laura Ingalls Wilder.  Listened to the audiobook with the kids on our Christmas trip to my parents.  Hearing the chores for those kids makes me think I should expect more from mine around the house!
2.  Jubal Sackett, by Louis L'Amour.  Nice change of pace from his normal formula.  The conjuring of fire to pull one over on his wife seemed...cheap.
3.  Last of the Breed, by Louis L'Amour.  Enjoyed, probably the fourth or fifth time I've read.
4.  The Eagle of the Ninth, by Rosemary Sutcliffe.  Took me a bit to get used to all the Roman terminology.  I think I'll have to watch the movie now to bemoan how it doesn't follow the book.
5.  The Silver Branch, by Rosemary Sutcliffe.  Probably my favorite of the trilogy.
6.  The Lantern Bearers, by Rosemary Sutcliffe.
7.  Comstock Lode, by Louis L'Amour.  Good epic tale to be bedridden with while awaiting COVID results.
8.  The Haunted Mesa, by Louis L'Amour.  Western Tough Guy + Sci Fi (parallel world that explains Anasazi disappearance)
9.  Atomic Habits, by James Clear.  Now to try some of his suggestions!
10. Galloway, by Louis L'Amour.
11. The Bible New Testament, The Message translation, by various authors.
12. The Lonesome Gods, by Louis L'Amour.
13. Hondo, by Louis L'Amour.
14. The White, by Deborah Larsen.  Fictional re-telling of the capture and life of Mary Jemison.  Read it at 3AM, interesting enough to keep me awake.
15. Fool Me Twice, by Jeff Lindsay.  Amusing throughout, but seemed to be striving to become the next blockbuster action thriller.
16. Hunting Open-Country Mule Deer, by Dwight Schuh.
17. The Waters of Andros, by Madsen Pirie
18. Dark Visitor, by Madsen Pirie

Quote from: Zhiantara
1. The House of Islam: a global history, Ed Husain. Really good overview of the history, basic tenets, strengths and problems of Islam, written by a devout believer.
2. Quiet: the power of introverts in a world that can't stop talking, Susan Cain. I read this whenever I need reminding that introversion is not a personal failing. Soooo good.
3. No Friend but the Mountains, Behrouz Boochani. The experiences of an asylum seeker detained on Manus Island. Hard to put down because it is excellent, hard to pick up again because it is not a feel-good read.
4. The explosive child, Dr. Ross Greene. Why standard behaviour management techniques don't work for kids with challenging behaviours and how to partner with them to change things and make life better for everyone.
5. Welcoming food: Diet as medicine for home cooks and other healers. Book 1: Energetics of food and healing. Andrew Sterman. The Chinese medicine approach to food but through a western lens.
6. Welcoming food: Diet as medicine for home cooks and other healers. Book 2: Recipes and kitchen practice. Andrew Sterman. Tried a few ideas and seems to be helping with my reflux.

7. Star Trek: The Autobiography of Kathryn Janeway, Una McCormack. A novel written as an autobiography, mostly just rehashing ST Voyager.

1. On Writing by Stephen King
2. Red at the Bone by Jaqueline Woodson (I will need to reread the end of this one again. I was getting sleepy as I finished and I think I need to soak in more of the beautiful writing.)
3. Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
4. House of Trelawney by Hannah Rothschild
5. Race and Reunion by David W. Blight (a book about how the US handled Reconstruction and how that narrative still effects things today. A bit dense but very glad I read it)
7. Differently Wired: Raising an Exceptional Child in a Conventional World by Deborah Reber
8. The City We Became by M.K. Jemison
9. Can't Even: How Millenials Became the Burnout Generation by Anne Hellen Petersen (Good but depressing?)
10. First Frost by Sarah Addison Allen
11. From Burnout to Breakthrough by Eileen McDargh
12. You'll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey by Amber Ruffin and Lacey Lamar (delightful! Amber Ruffin is one of my favorite comedians and her ability to approach a serious topic with humor was a balm I did not know I needed until I read it).
13. The Guest List by Lucy Foley
14. A Gentlemen in Moscow by Amor Towles
15. Behind the Attic Wall by Sylvia Cassedy
16. The Witches of New York by Ami McKay  . . .
17. How to Manage Your Home Without Losing Your Mind by Dana K White

Speciman Days by Walt Whitman
Wide Sargasso Sea

32. Susan, Linda, Nina, and Cokie: The Extraordinary Story of the Founding Mothers of NPR
33. A House to Die For by Vicki Dudera . . .picked this up from a free library, would not recommend
34. The House Next Door by Anne Rivers Siddons . . . What a surprise delight! I had never heard of it and a friend mentioned it as her favorite haunted house book. Written in the 70s so there are some complaints about a couple of scenes in particular, BUT, having spent a few years living among the demographic of the main characters (Old Moneyish, Southern, and Episcopal) I 100% did not pick up on the datedness   - because those folks are apparently still living similar lives. Enjoyed it immensely.
35. The Office of Historical Corrections by Danielle Evans.  I think I saw it on the this thread and picked it up for the title alone. Really enjoyed the novella and two of the stories.

16. Hidden Valley Road by Robert Kolker. True story about a family with 12 children, six of whom were schizophrenic, interwoven with the history of the study and treatment of schizofrenia. Longer than it needed fo be, but really interesting.

17. Only Love Today by Rachel Macy Stafford. This was a re-read, and really helpful with being calmer and more patient with both my kids and myself.

The bikini story and the story about the artist! The artist one was ragey and funny in just the perfect balance. The bikini story twisted my heart: the author's empathy for the main character while also not letting her off the hook gave me lots of feels.

I also enjoyed the bridesmaid story and the one about the girl who ended up with an abandoned child but felt like they didn't stick the landing as well as the other two.

The bikini story felt like a Simone Biles style feat.

The artist one seems very popular and was memorable for sure. And yes, agree about the bikini one.  In fact, I think I'd pick the same 4 you did.  The Alcatraz and Happily Ever After are already fading from my memory.  But really overall I adored the whole thing.

29. The Song of Achilles, by Madeline Miller (May 31).

30. Klara and the Sun, by Kazuo Ishiguro (June 6). Just ok.  Didn't like it as well as Remains of the Day. What I find most notable about this author is how he places you so fully in the protagonist, without exposition or explanation about the protagonist themselves.  It seems like it really makes you take their point of view more and points out how biased the perspective on other characters can be, as opposed to the typical omniscient narrator.

31. Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, by Yuval Noah Harari (June 6) (audio).  A very broad overview.  Perhaps too broad to really get a useful theme out of it.  But a good survey, some info and connections I hadn't read or heard before.

Next 20, favourites marked.:

201. Wild Sign - Patricia Briggs
202. The Betrothed - Kiera Cass
203. Dry - Neal & Jarrod Shusterman

204. How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big - Scott Adams
I found his life story, challenges, and philosophies very unique and interesting to read about. Also, illustrating concepts with Dilbert cartoons is fantastic.

205. Breathe - Sarah Crossan
206. Resist - Sarah Crossan

207. The Host - Stephenie Meyer
I liked reading an alien invasion story from the perspective of the aliens. A very fresh and original story.

208. The Coddling of the American Mind - Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt
209. Monster - A. Lee Martinez
210. Crossed - Ally Condie
211. Reached - Ally Condie
212. Third Girl - Agatha Christie
213. Cards on the Table - Agatha Christie
214. The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding - Agatha Christie
215. Dumb Witness - Agatha Christie
216. Gleam - Raven Kennedy

217. Thirteen Reasons Why - Jay Asher
I read this one as part of a reading challenge and wasn't sure going in if I'd like a book about teen suicide, but wow, I could not put it down.

218. The Marrow Thieves - Cherie Dimaline

219. Children of Blood and Bone - Tomi Adeyemi
220. Children of Virtue and Vengeance - Tomi Adeyemi
Another two reading challenge books that are very different from my normal stuff, but really good. It's an African fantasy series based on traditional mythology with incredibly badass characters, a cool magic system, and a good old rise-up-against-the-oppressors storyline.

36) The Wisdom of Frugality: Why Less Is More - More Or Less, Emrys Westacott
37) In Love with the World: A Monk's Journey Through the Bardos of Living and Dying, Helen Tworkov and Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche --

42) The Tao of Pooh, Benjamin Hoff

recently finished/reading
43) Son of a Trickster, Eden Robinson--quirky coming-of-age story in somewhat harsh surroundings, surreal experiences, Indigenous knowledge, interesting read

44) Natural Born Heroes: How a Daring Band of Misfits Mastered the Lost Secrets of Strength and Endurance, Christopher McDougall--this book has A LOT jammed into it. World War 2, Grecian mythology, Natural Movement, Keto dieting, Parkour. A bit of a mashup but still enjoyed it.

45) Subtract: The Untapped Science of Less, Leidy Klutz --a different approach to understanding why humans accumulate or look at things with a 'growing' mindset

RECENTLY FINISHED:
18. The Lies That Bind, Emily Griffin (Bookclub)
19. The Dutch House, Ann Patchett
20. Year of Wonders, Geraldine Brooks
21. The Watsons/Sandition, Jane Austen (two of her shorter stories)

CURRENTLY READING:
22. Sense and Sensibility, Jane Austen (first time reading this one)

I'm a little behind pace to get to 50 this year, but I'll be retiring on July 2 so should have more reading time in the 2nd half of the year. I'm trying to mix in some of the classics with contemporary authors.

43) Son of a Trickster, Eden Robinson
44) Natural Born Heroes: How a Daring Band of Misfits Mastered the Lost Secrets of Strength and Endurance, Christopher McDougall
45) Subtract: The Untapped Science of Less, Leidy Klutz

went of a bit of a spree
46) Trickster Drift, Eden Robinson
47) Return of the Trickster, Eden Robinson--quite the trilogy, not sure I loved the third book as much as the others but a very unique series. Dark but also so surreal that it wasn't too disturbing..
48) Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World, David Epstein--as a generalist I'm totally biased but am enjoying this so far

19. Why Fish Don't Exist by Lulu Miller

20. Scythe by Neal Shusterman

21. The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry by John Mark Comer

I'm all over the place with genre, but I really enjoyed and would recommend each of these books.

1. East of Eden, by John Steinbeck (Jan 2).
2. A Promised Land, by Barack Obama (Jan 5) (audio).
3. King Leopold's Ghost, by Adam Hochschild (Jan 17).
4. Every Heart a Doorway, by Seanan McGuire (Jan 18).
5. Plain Bad Heroines, by Emily M. Danforth (Jan 21) (audio).
6. Trick Mirror: Reflections on Self-Delusion, by Jia Tolentino (Jan 29).
7. The Guest List, by Lucy Foley (Jan 29) (audio).
8. A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine L'Engle (Feb 2).
9. The Tyranny of Merit: What’s Become of the Common Good?, by Michael J. Sandel (Feb 10) (audio).
10. The Forgotten Garden, by Kate Morton (Feb 27).
11. Sister Outsider: Essays and Speeches, by Audre Lord (Mar 4) (audio).
12. Ravenna: Capital of Empire, Crucible of Europe, by Judith Herrin (Mar 6).
13. River of Teeth, by Sarah Gailey (Mar 7) (audio).
14. Regeneration, by Pat Barker (Mar 9).
15. Red at the Bone, by Jacqueline Woodson (Mar 14) (audio).
22. The Grown Up, by Gillian Flynn (Apr 27) (audio).
23. The Office of Historical Corrections, by Danielle Evans (May 12) (audio).
24. Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World, by Jack Weatherford (May 13).

30. Klara and the Sun, by Kazuo Ishiguro (June 6).
31. Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, by Yuval Noah Harari (June 6) (audio).

32. Bag of Bones, by Stephen King (June 14) (audio). King is a guilty pleasure for me and was one of the earliest authors I read in life, along with Francine Pascual's Sweet Valley books and all the Nancy Drews.  This is an older book of his I somehow missed, and he is the reader for the audiobook, which is fun!

33. A Guide to the Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy, by William B. Irvine (June 20). A FIRE classic. A good topic I'd like to dive into more, but I was really disappointed in this book.  It felt like he was writing for a...maybe like 11-year old?  It was so repetitive and simplistic.  Could have really used a good editor.

Thanks for the tip. I went straight to Good Reads and read a couple hilarious take down reviews. Worryingly, several of my actual friends have read it and gave it high marks, but based on the reviews I read, these particular friends are in the target demo.

Next 20, favourites marked. I've been getting into cozy mysteries lately, which has been really fun.

221. This Mortal Coil - Emily Suvada
222. Fever - Lauren DeStefano
223. Reign the Earth - A.C. Gaughen

224. Heart of Iron - Ashley Poston
225. Soul of Stars - Ashley Poston
A really good sci-fi duology I stumbled across - love the characters, especially the robot POV parts.

226. Murder with Fried Chicken and Waffles - A.L. Herbert

227. The City of Zirdai - Maria Snyder
I love everything this author writes. This is such a fresh and original fantasy series set in a desert world with epic underground cities.

228. Hallowe'en Party - Agatha Christie
229. Exit Wounds - J.A. Jance
230. Three Act Tragedy - Agatha Christie
231. Coraline - Neil Gaiman
232. Something Read, Something Dead - Eva Gates
233. Escaping Wonderland - Tiffany Roberts
234. The Gilded Ones - Namina Forna
235. After the Funeral - Agatha Christie

236. Too Many Curses - A. Lee Martinez
A really funny stand-alone fantasy following the events in an evil wizard's keep after he accidentally gets eaten by a dragon.

237. Hell of a Witch - K.E. O'Connor
238. Murder in G Major - Alexia Gordon
239. I'll Be the One - Lyla Lee
240. Decanting a Murder - Nadine Nettmann

18. Parable of the Talents by Octavia Butler
19. Piranesi by Susanna Clarke
20. UnSelfie: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me World by Michelle Borba
21. Ballet in the Cold War: a Soviet - American Exchange by Anne Searcy
22. Bringing Down the Duke by Evie Dunmore
23. Debt: The First 5000 Years by David Graeber24. A Rogue of One's Own by Evie Dunmore
25. Shadows in Death by J.D. Robb
26. Faithless in Death by J.D. Robb
27. The Rose Code by Kate Quinn
28. Hunt, Gather, Parent by Michaeleen Doucleff
29. Big Summer by Jennifer Weiner
30. The Social Graces by Renee Rosen.
31. Jane Eyre
32. Susan, Linda, Nina, and Cokie: The Extraordinary Story of the Founding Mothers of NPR
33. A House to Die For by Vicki Dudera
34. The House Next Door by Anne Rivers Siddons
35. The Office of Historical Corrections by Danielle Evans.

Gave Up On:
Speciman Days by Walt Whitman
Wide Sargasso Sea

I had a real run of duds from just grabbing things from the Little Free Library on late night walks. Will have to make time to go to the library for the next batch of stuff or shop my own bookshelves.

36. The Ravenscar Dynasty by Barbara Taylor Bradford - retelling of War of the Roses updated to Victorian/Industrial England. Could have been fun but was basically a straight retelling of history, not even any name changes, and ended up being horribly boring.
37. The House on Fripp Island (can't remember the author) - the only one I might recommend. Good sense of dread and good character building but falls into the category that I call "New Yorker story". To me that generally means well written but most of the characters aren't likable and it is ultimately a downer.
38. Love Your Life by Sophie Kinsella. I don't know if I have ever disliked a protagonist in a rom com so much.
39. The Devlin Diary by Christi Phillips. Mystery/Historic fiction. This was a book from the mid-aughts and it felt like it - Academics falling in love and solving a Tudor mystery.

34. My Year Abroad, by Chang-rae Lee (June 24) (audio). An unusual and surprising novel.  Long, but I enjoyed the ride and didn't really notice.

35. At the Water's Edge, by Sara Gruen (June 24). I got sucked in pretty hard, but in retrospect it's not really that *good* a book, like I thought Water for Elephants was.  But, I guess there's something to be said for just enjoying the read even if you feel a bit like you ate too much junk food after.

195. Scythe - Neal Shusterman
196. Thunderhead - Neal Shusterman
197. The Toll - Neal Shusterman
Oh my god. This is the best dystopia I've ever read. My boyfriend got sucked in too and now we talk about some aspect of this world literally several times a day, and sometimes in the middle of the night - the religion, characters, plots, society, AI, ethics choices, etc. A really amazing series, and I can't wait to read more of his stuff.

Just wanted to say, I'm half way through Thunderhead, and I'm thoroughly enjoying the series. Dystopian novels have become so cliche, but this one has a really interesting spin on things, especially with the AI aspect and its choices. Wanted to say thanks for the recommendation!

That's great! It's for sure one of my favourite book series of this year, and also of all time.

...
46) Trickster Drift, Eden Robinson
47) Return of the Trickster, Eden Robinson
48) Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World, David Epstein

Recently finished/reading
49) Jonny Appleseed, Joshua Whitehead--winner of Canada Reads.Totally unique perspective. A two-spirit, Indigiqueer protagonist who makes his living as a cybersex worker, who needs to find his way back to his family (and reserve) for a funeral. Made me appreciate the unique power of a novel to allow you to inhabit (for a short while) a life so different from your own.

50) The Salt Path (memoir), Raynor Winn. Been wanting to read this for a while and our library just brought it in so I read in just a day or two while camping. Well-written and compelling. I love stories about hiking/walking so it was right up my alley.
