112. Heida: A Shepherd at the edge of the world - Steinunn sigurdardottir & Heida Asgeirsdottir - absolutely gorgeous read!

ooh--this one looks great. thanks for highlighting that you enjoyed it--I just purchased the kindle version :)

I really hope you like it. I'm constantly pushing recommendations on my friends, but they don't have the time to read as much as I do. I joke that I read everything (including the crap) so they don't have to!

53) The Salt Path - Raynor Winn. Fifty year old woman and her husband who has been diagnosed with a terminal illness become homeless and decide to walk (and wild camp) along England's 600+ mile South West Coastal path. It was a best-seller a couple of years ago, so I'm a bit late on this. Very good.

Not bad, I do get caught up in them.  I'm not sure if I'd keep reading, but I have to find out what's happening with the Chief Inspector's career at the Surete, so I guess I might just have to read them all??

  • The Great Hunt - Robert Jordan
  • Making It - Kelly Coyne, Erik Knutzen
  • 1984 - George Orwell
  • The Golden Compass - Philip Pullman
  • The Subtle Knife - Philip Pullman
  • The Amber Spyglass - Philip Pullman

Really found a genre/subject matter I enjoy overall with the Pullman books.  Started Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman.

Don't think I'll hit anywhere near 50, but this is better than I did last year.

43. Hidden Valley Road: Inside the Mind of an American Family, by Robert Kolker, finished 9/4. I think I got this recommendation here, and it was a great one! Nicely staged book covering the story of one very afflicted family as well as a history of the study and treatment of schizophrenia.  Fascinating.

Did anyone see the article in the Washington Post? Fall reading: 12 books to keep you occupied for the rest of 2020

or as I like to say: 12 books to keep Linea_Norway and Raenia busy for 2.5 weeks.

I've been wanting to join this thread and now I can.  I used to read a lot, then life happened (job, kids, etc.) but then also there are a fair amount of excuses in there (if most of my random internet surfing time was converted to books, that would be a lot of books) and I'm trying to restart and track my progress.  I read a few library books earlier in the year but I'm not going to dig back in time and am going to try to do... at least six books in the second half of the year.  (Starting small).

1.  All The Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy

Started a new book last night.

Welcome!
To misquote Lao Tzu: A journey of six books begins with a single page.
Enjoy the ride.

Thanks!  : )

I used to read a ton, and in fact I always credit reading a lot to why I did so well in school.  I was actually very hot and cold (moody) as a student but ended up doing really, really well in the end.  But my mom was a librarian and she took us to the library every week and we got to get a HUGE pile of FREE books about whatever we wanted!  Talk about a great deal.

I've got three little kids and a full time job so I don't think I can get a 50 book clip for a while, but crowding out some pointless internet news time with some solid book time has been helpful.

I used to read a lot of like nonfiction and even books that were practical (my LEAST favorite " -- business books, aka. "Why All Your Problems Are That You Don't Work Around The Clock And Suck Up To Your Boss Enough -- no thanks).  I'm starting to gravitate towards fiction again.  It helps wind me down, and I like the sheer enjoyable pointlessness of it.  Of course some say fiction can be more true that non-fiction.  If the author aggregates behavior and distills it into a believable archetype, the truths embedded in the work can be way more poignant than anything Malcolm Gladwell can synthesize from the executive summary of various academic papers.

Watership Down Richard Adams

I read that to my son as a bedtime story a few years ago, and was shocked at how much of it had gone completely over my head when I read it as a child. Obviously I wouldn't have noticed the parallels with Homer's Odyssey as a child, but many other parts of the story passed me by too.

42. Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth, by Reza Aslan, finished 9/4 (audio).
43. Hidden Valley Road: Inside the Mind of an American Family, by Robert Kolker, finished 9/4.

44. Last Woman Standing, by Amy Gentry, finished 9/8/20.  I was surprised by this book.  I thought it seem predictable part of the way through, but then it took some different tacts and I mostly enjoyed it.  A few points could have been better, but this was a real page turner for me and is just the sort of engrossing book I've been looking for!

I always like to say that it's a story about war, friendship, home, family, sex, love, and sometimes rabbits.

Quote
2020
1. The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer*
2. Y is for Yesterday by Sue Grafton...the end
3. Beyond the Point by Claire Gibson. Novel about women at West  Point.
4. Working Stiff by Tori Carrington
5. Lights Out, Sleep, Sugar and Survival by T.S.Wiley with Bent Formby, PhD. Full disclosure. I did  not finish. I  got pretty far.  This book was terribly written, not at all factual,  no research based results.  I cannot bring myself to donate or back to the little free library. It's going to be recycled.
6. Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me  (and other concerns) by Mindy Kaling *
7. Once a Runner by John L. Parker Jr.
8. The Orphan Thief by Glynis Peters
9. The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
10. Out To Work by Alice Kessler-Harris. * This was subtitled  "a history of wage earning women in the United States". Very interesting and illuminating book.  A bit hard to read,  very small print. Plus I think it's a textbook.
11.  Three Sisters by Susan Mallery (fiction/romance.  Fun read.)
12.  One Good Deed by David Baldacci.  This was good.  I'm not sure what the good deed was though.
13.  What We Forgot to Bury by Marin Montgomery.  A thriller that I read on the kindle, for free on a "free first reads". Pretty good.
14.  Shock Wave by  John Sandford.  Props to my friend Mindy who gave me a pile of books.
15.  Why We Get Fat by Gary Taubes.  "We don't get fat because we overeat.  We overeat because we get fat."
16.  Invisible Prey by John Sandford.  I'd forgotten how much I like his books.  We stopped reading because they got really dark, but this one wasn't too bad.
17.  Storm Prey by John Sandford
18.  The 131 Method by Chalene Johnson (from the little free library).  Healthy food, talks quite a bit about intermittent fasting and lower carb eating.
19.  Flat Belly Diet by Cynthia Sass, Liz Vaccariello.  Another little free library book.  This book, like Why We Get Fat, goes into quite a bit of depth about hormones and insulin and fat gain and fat loss.  I was impressed with the detail.  I will probably keep this book as a general health reference.
20.  Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. Good book.  To keep our teen reading, we are doing a family book club. Next up is The Hunger games trilogy.
21. The Secret of Red Gate Farm (Nancy Drew) by Carolyn Keene. I started reading this to the little one.  He got bored.
22.  Stolen Prey by John Sandford.  I'm on a roll with John Sandford
23.  The Hunger Games  by Suzanne Collins
24.  A Woman's World edited by Marybeth Bond. Short true stories and excerpts about women and travel.  Very good  until the last chapter,  which was depressing and kinda ruined the book.
25.  Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins
26.  Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins
27.  American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins
28.  Sweet Revenge by Diane Mott Davidson
29.  Gathering Prey by John Sandford
30.  Extreme Prey by John Sandford
31.  Golden Prey, by John Sandford - my first Kindle Library book!!

44. Last Woman Standing, by Amy Gentry, finished 9/8/20.

45. The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes, by Suzanne Collins, finished 9/10/20 (audio).  Yes, this was the escapism book that I needed!  The Hunger Games prequel.  It is not a great book, literature-wise, but it scratched an itch for sure.  I got really engrossed and loved harkening back to reading the original trilogy a decade ago, when a dystopian future seemed far less likely.

Hey Redhead84, how was Erik Larson's The Splendid and the Vile?  It is on my to-be-read list.

I enjoyed it quite a bit. It took me some time to get into it, but I think that was a mismatch of the reading material and my mood for dealing with a serious non-fiction book. The book gave me a deeper appreciation of what England went through during the Battle of Britain.

Hey Redhead84, how was Erik Larson's The Splendid and the Vile?  It is on my to-be-read list.

I enjoyed it quite a bit. It took me a few tries to get into it, but I've been struggling with reading over the last few months, and a more serious non-fiction was not the right match for my mood.  Once I jumped that hurdle, it was a quick read. I found an even greater appreciation for what the British people went through during the Battle of Britain.

25) Jane Eyre, Bronte – audio book
26) The Fortieth Door – audio book
27) The Princess of Burundi – Kjell Ericksson
28) Along the Trail with Ralph Bice in Algonquin Park – I had to skip the sections on hunting and trapping.
29) Kidnapped – audio book, Robert Louis Stevenson –
30) Still Mine – Amy Stuart – thriller genre and I found it diverting
31) Still Water – Amy Stuart, like her first one enough to source the second one.
32) Origins: how Earth’s history shaped human history – Lewis Dartnell.  While well written, the impact of humans on the earth and my lack of enough geography made this one too hard for me.  I took it back to the library after two renewals and only making it to page 64.

I shall look the list @Splashncash.  The Globe and Mail had a great list this past weekend.
