I'm way behind on this challenge. I think 25 will be a more realistic number for me.

Anyone know when libraries might open again? If it's going to be a long time, I should probably bite the bullet and start buying books.

Seems like it will depend on your state and county (or country and etc. if you aren't US).

You aren't up for e-books or audiobooks?  That's basically all I do nowadays.  I'm reading a hard copy book right now and am having a hard time with it!

Yeah, probably pretty variable depending on location. I just wonder what the criteria will be for reopening.
I'm more of a visual-type. I also shut off my computer an hour before bed (at which time I read). But that's interesting to hear that your preferences have changed. Maybe mine will too!

I do use a Kindle Paperwhite, which I understand has less of that negative impact on vision and sleep that our phones and computers do, so if you are up for another gadget, that is a good option. I no longer have a book light, and I do have a husband sharing the bed, so I actually don't really have a way to read a non-Kindle book at night, since he wants the lights out while I'm still reading. And it's so much easier to hold! In fact, whether in bed or at a table I usually just prop it up on something and my hands don't freeze at night in the winter (I can keep them mostly tucked under the covers) and I can eat or whatever more easily while reading.

I'm adding the Kindle Paperwhite to my wishlist! Looks like a great device.
Just found out that the library in my area is opening up for curbside pickup of held items Monday! I'll have to look into what they're doing to disinfect books. But if all pans out, it'll be great to have a selection of books to choose from again.
I think I'll still revise my goal to 25 books this year. But hopefully I'll surpass it.

I read The Summer Book a few years ago, cerat0n1a, and it really is a lovely book.

I didn't know Baker had come out with a pop-ling book -- interesting! I am behind the times.

22. In the Ring of Fire: A Pacific Basin Journey, by James D. Houston, finished 5/18/20.  The author is a relative, so I'm a bit biased, but I enjoyed this book.  It's a series of essays about culture and environment around the Pacific Rim, and was a nice sort of travelogue to read while I'm not getting to travel myself.  Makes some interesting connections between cultures and history (Okinawa and Hawaii, Japan and California, and lots of WWII history) and I also enjoyed reading some things about my own family that I didn't know.

Probably not behind the times, actually. It's a relatively old book, published in 2001. Unfortunately, his intro chapter has not aged well, because he starts off with a section on how rubbish computer translation is.

Ah, then just the right age for me to have ignored it completely when I was an active linguist.

24. Midnight Riot – Ben Aaronovitch – pretty much what you’d expect from a former screenwriter for Dr Who (funny, enjoyable fantasy with important underlying social messages).

Is that the American title for Rivers of London? (The 1st in the series?) They are wonderful. I think he has a new one out this month.

14. The Last Wish, Andrzej Sapkowski (borrowed). Enjoyable intro to the Witcher series.

15. The Blood of Elves, Andrzej Sapkowski (borrowed). More of the Witcher, and still just a solid enjoyable fantasy-action read.

16. Spinning Silver, Naomi Novik (library). Holy HELL this is an amazing book. Tied with The Bear and the Nightingale for best book I've read this year, so far.

Currently reading:

The Natural History of the UC Santa Cruz Campus, Martha Brown et al. (library)
The Social Life of Coffee, Brian Cowan (own, pre-2020)

1.  The Far Field by Madhuri Vijay, finished 01/02/2020 (audio).

2. Golden Gate Gardening: The Complete Guide to Year-Round Food Gardening in the San Francisco Bay Area & Coastal California by Pamela Peirce, finished 01/10/2020.

3. Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions by Gloria Steinem, finished 01/11/2020.

4. Then She Was Gone, by Lisa Jewell, finished 01/13/2020.

5. Meridian, by Alice Walker, finished 01/26/2020.

6. Dawn, by Octavia Butler, finished 01/29/2020.

7. Women & Power: A Manifesto, by Mary Beard, finished 01/31/2020.

8. Half of a Yellow Sun, by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, finished 02/14/2020.

9. The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, by Stuart Turton, finished 02/19/2020 (audio).

10. There There, by Tommy Orange, finished 2/20/2020.

11.  The Life You Can Save: How to Do Your Part to End World Poverty (Updated 10th Anniversary Edition), by Peter Singer, finished 2/27/2020 (audio). The book is available for free download here: https://www.thelifeyoucansave.org/the-book/

12. The Witches are Coming, by Lindy West, finished 3/7/2020 (audio).

13. Everything Under, by Daisy Johnson, finished 3/8/2020.

14. This is How You Lose the Time War, by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone, finished 3/9/2020 (audio).

15. Still Life, by Louise Penny, finished 3/15/2020.

16. The Dutch House, by Ann Patchett, finished 3/21/2020 (audio).

17. Slow Horses, by Mick Herron, finished 4/4/2020.

18. Adulthood Rites, by Octavia Butler, finished 4/18/20.

19. Imago, by Octavia Butler, finished 4/25/20.

20. The Year of Magical Thinking, by Joan Didion, finished 5/7/20.

21. Catch and Kill: Lies, Spies and a Conspiracy to Protect Predators, by Ronan Farrow, finished 5/7/20 (audio).

22. In the Ring of Fire: A Pacific Basin Journey, by James D. Houston, finished 5/18/20.

23. Barracoon: The Story of the Last "Black Cargo", by Zora Neale Hurston, finished 5/22/20 (audio). ZNH interviews a man that was taken as a prisoner of war by another tribe in Africa, sold to illegal slave traders and brought on the very last ship carrying people to be made slaves in America.  The book has several elements to it, not just his stories. And it's all interesting, though somehow it didn't feel quite as profound as I expected it.  You hear about his experience in Africa, on the boat, as a slave and as a free man in America.  The interviews were in the late 1920s and it's simply amazing to think that at that time there was still someone alive who had grown up in Africa and been brought to America and sold as a slave.

24. Magic for Liars, by Sarah Gailey, finsihed 5/22/20.  This book was predictable while having an incredibly unique and unusual storyline.  I guess I fell on the side of not enjoying it, overall.

I read it like a decade ago but really, really enjoyed it. It's one of the few books I read so long ago on my list to pick up and read again

I am currently halfway listening through a radio play. Three sessions left. It is The Days of the Trifids, spoken in Norwegian. Recommended by a biology professor who held an online presentation about poisounous plants.

Also reading a book, How to fossilize your hamster, but I don't read much in it. Maybe the coming week, as I'll be on a hiking trip. I might read while DH fishes.

@lazycow I am listening to it as an audiobook through my library--love the library! Strong authorship, interesting stories but also sad in a way.  Industrial tourism, dated commentary on the Navajo nation, car culture and such is pretty gutting.  But I would still recommend. I live in the mountains so desert-dweller perspectives seem exotic.

*71. Missing, presumed (#1 DS Manon Bradshaw) - Susie Steiner (reread)
*72. Persons unknown (# 2 DS Manon Bradshaw) - Susie Steiner (reread)

Absolutely love Susie Steiner. She is the best modern UK crime writer around at the moment, in my opinion. Her latest, Remain Silent came out this week and I am first in line at the library for a physical copy. Cannot wait. Will buy my own copy it if it is as good as the first two.

16. Spinning Silver, Naomi Novik (library)

17. The Social Life of Coffee, Brian Cowan (own, pre-2020). Not the most exciting possible read one could have about coffee, but still a good one -- if you like English history in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, and also you like coffee, you'll enjoy this one.

18. The Lies of Locke Lamora, Scott Lynch (own, pre-2020). Incredibly fun book. I listened to it on audiobook, which means it went very slow for me (I don't do audiobooks quickly), but it also has great narration. I loved the characters, really enjoyed the plot, and just generally found it to be a fantastic book.

19. The Natural History of the UC Santa Cruz Campus, Martha Brown et al. (library). Super enjoyable read about the natural history of a place I love.

Currently reading:

Flour Salt Water Yeast, Ken Forkish (borrowed)

Pre-2020 books: 6/15

Local natural history and ecology: 1/9

25. The Answers, by Catherine Lacey, finished 5/31/20.  Ironically, this book does *not* have any answers, although it does end up provoking a few thoughtful questions. I loved it at the beginning.  Loved the writing and was interested in where the plot would go.  Midway it started going off the rails a bit and by the end it was just ok.

26) Cicerone Walking Guide, The Dales Way - Terry Marsh. Bit of planning for a future running trip.
