I borrowed a 750 page book from the library a couple weeks ago. I don't read nearly quickly or often enough to finish even a 400 page book in that time span, so I usually have to renew books. However, this book is not eligible for renewal because of the long wait list. It's due today, and I'm only about halfway through. I'm seriously debating whether I'd rather pay the fine for being 2 weeks late or get back in line so that I can finish it.

Have you asked the library personell to change it a longer period? They probably have more permissions in the system than you do. I once borrowed a book that had only a 10 day circulation period. Already when I borrowed it (and needed help on the checkout), the personell noticed that the book was too thick to read in 10 days (and in a non-native language), so they changed it for me to a whole month.

Spare a thought for the other people on the waiting list; it's not really fair on them for you to hold on to the book. In that case I'd 1) return the book and borrow it again later to finish, or 2) buy it if I was really liking it and wanted to finish now (you could always donate the bought copy to a library when you are done).

They wouldn't let me renew in person either. I'm back on the wait list, 8th in line with 6 copies of the book, so it shouldn't be too long of a wait. It's the fifth book in a series that will eventually be six. I have the original trilogy, but I don't think I'll spring for the second trilogy just yet.

I swear I was on this thread, but maybe that was last year and I have a bad memory.  My goal for the year is 26 books, not 50.  One more than last year.  I might make it?

Many of my books come from the little free library.  One was considered a literary triumph, which means it was a slog to get through and took me 4-6 weeks.  So now I'm behind.
* is non-fiction.

1. The End of Poverty by Jeffrey D. Sachs *
2. Blue Shoes and Happiness by Alexander McCall Smith
3. Always in My Heart by Pam Weaver
4. The Outcast by Sadie Jones
5. The Big Necessity: The Unmentionable World of Human Waste and Why it Matters by Rose George *
6. The Story Hour by Thrity Umrigar
7.  The Good Husband of Zebra Drive by Alexander McCall Smith
8.  What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets by Peter Menzel and Faith D'Aluisio * (This is a coffee table book that I've owned for years and have read multiple times.)
9.  Still Life with Bread Crumbs by Anna Quindlen (good!)
10. The Miracle at Speedy Motors by Alexander McCall Smith
11. The Help by Kathryn Stockett (this was excellent)
12. A River in Darkness by Masaji Ishikawa * (about life and escape from N. Korea.  Sigh.)
13.  Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers by Robert M. Sapolsky * (very good, informative, if a bit text-booky)
14.  Thru-Hiking will Break Your Heart by Carrot Quinn * (You really feel like you are there!)
15.  Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons by Lorna Landvik
16.  Nickle and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich * Still relevant, almost 20 years later.
17.  After the War is Over by Jennifer Robson
18.  Promise Canyon by Robyn Carr
19. The Lay of The Land by Richard Ford.  This was ok.  It was a slog.  Put me way behind on my reading.  4 weeks?  6 weeks?  Funny but very verbose.  Lot of run on sentences.
20. Literacy and Longing in LA by Jennifer Kaufman and Karen Mack.  Light-hearted fun read, even though I didn't get the literary references.
21. The Colors of All the Cattle by Alexander McCall Smith (gotta pick some quick reads to get back on track!)
22.  Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz.  This was sponsored by our public library. Young adult novel. It was so sweet.

Currently reading Miracle Cure by Harlan Coben, funny I see @tnrunner read that too.  Another Little free library - I think I've read most of his already, these are older books that came out before I started reading his work.

Also reading The Indian in the Cupboard to my 7 year old, and yes I think that totally counts.  I'll add it when finished.

50. Jack Barsky - Deep Undercover

Seems weird to say about a true story/memoir, but the ending was pretty disappointing to me. It was otherwise a good read, although I found Barsky to be a very unsympathetic character.

And that's 50! I'm sure I will keep reading, but I'm not sure I'll keep noting the titles here... I'm glad I did the challenge but I'm not sure it was good for me to push reading quite so much.

@FireHiker  How did you like the Philippa Gregory books and the Rick Riordan books?  My teen read a bunch of the Riordan books (so we have them).

Looks for some series to pick up.

Rick Riordan is entertaining; I read them all because my 9 year old was obsessed and kept telling me to read them. They were all very quick and got pretty formulaic, but they were enjoyable easy reading and gave me shared conversation with my son, so worth it. I either read the books we already had or ebooks free from the library.

As for Philippa Gregory, I mean, I rather enjoyed the first one I read which was The Lady of the Rivers. It was interesting and I had never even heard of the main character before. After a few books her style gets too repetitive for me. It isn't great writing. I am very stubborn and got through all of them (again, ebooks from the library), but they weren't the best books I've ever read. Actually my favorite thing about her books was how they were based on history, so even though they were still fiction there was enough history there that I went off on many tangents looking into what the history really was. After watching The Tudors years ago, it was interesting to see a completely different take on the time period. Sharon Kay Penman is a MUCH better author though, with the same general subject matter; if you haven't read her books before I recommend them much higher than Philippa Gregory's.

I recently read the All Souls trilogy (Deborah Harkness, A Discovery of Witches) which I enjoyed too, although definitely a different genre than I usually go in for.

I cannot make a complete list for 2019, but I will write down as many as I can recall/retrieve.

Currently reading:

Debt: The First 5,000 Years, David Graeber

Read earlier in 2019:
The Magic Bullet, Noah Walton (by a fellow forum member)
Yesterday's Tomorrow, Noah Walton
The Lewis Trilogy, Peter May (3 books)
Light in the Shadows, Linda Lafferty
The Three-Body Trilogy, Cixin Liu (3 books)
Practical Magic, Allice Hoffman
Small Magic: A story of finding joy in creative writing and becoming prolific through microdosing, Jack McTerra

Plus several other library books or other paper books that I don't recall from memory. And some of the Kindle books I purchased earlier, but I don't remember which ones. I will keep track of my reading from Jan 2020.

I cannot make a complete list for 2019, but I will write down as many as I can recall/retrieve.

Currently reading:

Debt: The First 5,000 Years, David Graeber

Read earlier in 2019:
The Magic Bullet, Noah Walton (by a fellow forum member)
Yesterday's Tomorrow, Noah Walton
The Lewis Trilogy, Peter May (3 books)
Light in the Shadows, Linda Lafferty
The Three-Body Trilogy, Cixin Liu (3 books)
Practical Magic, Allice Hoffman
Small Magic: A story of finding joy in creative writing and becoming prolific through microdosing, Jack McTerra

Plus several other library books or other paper books that I don't recall from memory. And some of the Kindle books I purchased earlier, but I don't remember which ones. I will keep track of my reading from Jan 2020.

I found out that the library app has a loan history, so here are some more that I read:

Men who stare at goats, Jon Ronson
Paranormality, Richard Wiseman
59 seconds, Richard Wiseman (not sure I finished it)
Frozen in Time, Mitchell Zuckoff
Sportegn fra pattedyr (tracks made by mammals), Preben Bang (not a novel, but an information book)
Anna i ødemarka (Anna in the wildernis), Dagfinn Grønoset
The Way Through the Woods: On Mushrooms and Mourning, Litt Woon Long (very funny for me who is a member of the same mushroom club)
Hemmelige hytter (secret cabins), Marius Nergård Pettersen (an information book with some story text)
Why we sleep, Matthew Walker
Nordens pattedyr (mammals of the Scandinavia region), Torkel Hagström (not a novel, but an information book)

Livet illustrert (life in pictures), Lisa Aisato (Book with beautiful pictures/paintings about people in different phases of their lives. FIL got it as a gift from his GF while he visited us.)

For curiosity's sake, what are your opinions on setting a book down?  I decided to return The Hate U Give to the library after reading only a few chapters, as I find it too emotionally draining to read during the holiday season.  I may take it out again later, or I may not.  This is a difficult choice for me, for two reasons.  First, I hate setting down books I've started, just as a point of pride.  There are very few books I've been unable to finish, since I read very quickly I can usually just power through something boring, long, or poorly written.  Secondly, for this book in particular, I feel a sort of moral imperative, like I should be able to face this head on, and if I can't, that's a personal failing. (For those who don't know, it's about a black teenager who witnesses the police shooting of a friend of hers.)  I feel like I should be able to face what our country is, and that I'm a worse person if I can't.  Thoughts?

I don't often set a book down completely, as in never finish. I basically only do that if the book is so bad that it's driving me batty -- my Goodreads only has 13 abandoned books listed in over 10 years.

However, I will sort of put a book "in abeyance" for a while. If I think a book is good but just am not super interested in it/can't face it at the moment, I'll set it down and come back to it later. This are books that I very much intend to read but just started at the wrong time.

1. Infernal Devices - Philip Reeve - 1/3/18
2. Sapiens - Yuval Noah Harari - 1/12/18 - UGH. Great subject, TERRIBLE execution. 200 pages of content in 430 pages of endless fucking lists and artificial dichotomies. Will never be reading another book from this author. He needs an editor to take the wind out of his (verbose, tedious, pedantic, excessive) sails
3. How to Manage Your Home Without Losing Your Mind - Dana White - 1/21/19
4. A Darkling Plain - Philip Reeve - 1/22/19
5. Woman on Fire - Amy Jo Goddard - 2/11/19 - fucking AWFUL. I don't think I'm the target audience. I found it incredibly condescending and reductionist and self-righteous. It was for book club. Hate that I even had to finish it!
6. Better Than Before - Gretchen Rubin - 2/19/19 - great. I highly recommend it.
7. The Female Persuasion - Meg Wolitzer - 3/1/19- actually a pretty solid read! Kept me engaged. Not my usual by any means (it was for book club), but not an annoyance read either.
8. The Thief - Megan Whalen Turner - 3/10/19 - these are fun kids reads. Well written and engaging.
9. The Queen of Attolia - Megan Whalen Turner - 3/15/19
10. The King of Attolia - Megan Whalen Turner - 3/19/20
11. Dies in Fire - S M Stirling - 3/21/19 - Book club book. This was really good! It's a local author, and I hate to say it, but I wasn't expecting much. Good read though. World war z writing vibe, but more compelling characters.
12. A Conspiracy of Kings - Megan Whalen Turner - 3/24/19
13. Thick as Thieves Megan Whalen Turner - 3/28/19
14. Thanks a Thousand: A Gratitude Journey - AJ Jacobs - 4/6/19 - not one of my favorite books by him. Hit it's stride a *little* more later on? But really, could have easily been an article and been better for it. Not much of his usual reliable great humor either. Eh.
15. The Year of Living Danishly - Helen Russell - 4/4/19 - pretty good, although the surprise infertility/miracle pregnancy store line crushed my sad little infertile heart. Definitely made me laugh out loud a time or two, and was an interesting look into denmark. A bit dry in places though.
16. Flight Behavior - Barabara Kingsolver - 4/15/19 - took me a little bit to get into this, but it was really good. Sad at times for sure. Empowering. Politically topical. Not sure why I owned it for so long without reading it! I love her books.
17. The Prophet - Kahlil Gibran - 4/24/19
18. Expecting Better - Emily Oster - 5/2/19
19. The Keystone Approach: Healing Arthritis and Psoriasis by Healing the Microbiome - Rebecca Fett - 5/8/19
20. Atomic Habits - James Clear - in progress (ugh this is a slog. Better than Before was way better) abandoned at about 60%
21. Your Money or Your Life - Joseph R. Dominguez, Monique Tilford, and Vicki Robin - 5/25/19
22. Cribsheets - Emily Oster - 6/6/19
23. The Power - Naomi Alderman - 6/7/19 - book club. Compelling and very readable, but depressing and pretty graphic (lots of sexual violence).
24. The Protector's War - SM Stirling - 7/2/19 - long book, but also I've been *exhausted* this month. Pregnancy might ruin my reading goal, even before the baby gets here!
25. Desert Queen: The Extraordinary Life of Gertrude Bell by Janet Wallach - 8/2/19 - good god book club needs to stop picking long books. Good for a biography, although that's not my usual preferred genre. (Although the intro at the beginning was terribly written!)
26. The Hidden Power of F*cking Up- Try Guys - 8/8/19
27. The Mama Natural Week-by-Week Guide to Pregnancy and Childbirth - Genevieve Howland - 8/29/19
28. And Baby Makes Three - John M. Gottman and Julie Gottman - 8/31/19
29. Brain Health From Birth - Rebecca Fett - 9/6/19
30. Little Fires Everywhere — CELESTE NG - 9/20/19
31. Just Ella - Margaret Peterson Haddix - 9/25/19
32. Precious Little Sleep - Alexis Dubief - in progress
33. Fairest- Gail Carson Levine - 10/2/19
34. Mr. Penumbra’s 24 hour bookstore- Robin Sloan- 10/15/19
35. Spinning Silver - Naomi Novik - 10/31/19 - All of her books are so good. This one is in that category too. Absolutely great.
36. Angel Mage - Garth Nix - 12/21/19

(That Giant break is what happens when you have a baby apparently, haha)

I swear I was on this thread, but maybe that was last year and I have a bad memory.  My goal for the year is 26 books, not 50.  One more than last year.  I might make it?

Many of my books come from the little free library.  One was considered a literary triumph, which means it was a slog to get through and took me 4-6 weeks.  So now I'm behind.
* is non-fiction.

I hit my goal of 26!  Will probably finish #27 too.

23.  Miracle Cure by Harlan Coben (a reprint from the early 1990s)
24. Death in Rough Water by Francine Mathews. Good mystery.
25. The Weekenders by Mary Kay Andrews.  Beach Lit.  I liked it.
26. The Indian in the Cupboard by Lynne Reid Banks (read to my 7 yo)
