Finishing off the series... a satisfying ending! And I really liked how female-forward these books were without hitting you over the head with it or making it into a big message. Just a relative lack of gender stereotyping in terms of the roles people play, so you have both men and women being ruthless politicians and murderers and soldiers, and both men and women being loving caretakers, and no one ever comments on it either way.

1. Infernal Devices - Philip Reeve - 1/3/18
2. Sapiens - Yuval Noah Harari - 1/12/18 - UGH. Great subject, TERRIBLE execution. 200 pages of content in 430 pages of endless fucking lists and artificial dichotomies. Will never be reading another book from this author. He needs an editor to take the wind out of his (verbose, tedious, pedantic, excessive) sails
3. How to Manage Your Home Without Losing Your Mind - Dana White - 1/21/19
4. A Darkling Plain - Philip Reeve - 1/22/19
5. Woman on Fire - Amy Jo Goddard - 2/11/19 - fucking AWFUL. I don't think I'm the target audience. I found it incredibly condescending and reductionist and self-righteous. It was for book club. Hate that I even had to finish it!
6. Better Than Before - Gretchen Rubin - 2/19/19 - great. I highly recommend it.
7. The Female Persuasion - Meg Wolitzer - 3/1/19- actually a pretty solid read! Kept me engaged. Not my usual by any means (it was for book club), but not an annoyance read either.
8. The Thief - Megan Whalen Turner - 3/10/19 - these are fun kids reads. Well written and engaging.
9. The Queen of Attolia - Megan Whalen Turner - 3/15/19
10. The King of Attolia - Megan Whalen Turner - 3/19/20
11. Dies in Fire - S M Stirling - 3/21/19 - Book club book. This was really good! It's a local author, and I hate to say it, but I wasn't expecting much. Good read though. World war z writing vibe, but more compelling characters.
12. A Conspiracy of Kings - Megan Whalen Turner - 3/24/19
13. Thick as Thieves Megan Whalen Turner - 3/28/19
14. Thanks a Thousand: A Gratitude Journey - AJ Jacobs - 4/6/19 - not one of my favorite books by him. Hit it's stride a *little* more later on? But really, could have easily been an article and been better for it. Not much of his usual reliable great humor either. Eh.
15. The Year of Living Danishly - Helen Russell - 4/4/19 - pretty good, although the surprise infertility/miracle pregnancy store line crushed my sad little infertile heart. Definitely made me laugh out loud a time or two, and was an interesting look into denmark. A bit dry in places though.
16. Flight Behavior - Barabara Kingsolver - 4/15/19 - took me a little bit to get into this, but it was really good. Sad at times for sure. Empowering. Politically topical. Not sure why I owned it for so long without reading it! I love her books.
17. The Prophet - Kahlil Gibran - 4/24/19
18. Expecting Better - Emily Oster - 5/2/19
19. The Keystone Approach: Healing Arthritis and Psoriasis by Healing the Microbiome - Rebecca Fett - 5/8/19
20. Atomic Habits - James Clear - in progress (ugh this is a slog. Better than Before was way better) abandoned at about 60%
21. Your Money or Your Life - Joseph R. Dominguez, Monique Tilford, and Vicki Robin - 5/25/19
22. Cribsheets - Emily Oster - 6/6/19
23. The Power - Naomi Alderman - 6/7/19 - book club. Compelling and very readable, but depressing and pretty graphic (lots of sexual violence).
24. The Protector's War - SM Stirling - 7/2/19 - long book, but also I've been *exhausted* this month. Pregnancy might ruin my reading goal, even before the baby gets here!
25. Desert Queen: The Extraordinary Life of Gertrude Bell by Janet Wallach - 8/2/19 - good god book club needs to stop picking long books. Good for a biography, although that's not my usual preferred genre. (Although the intro at the beginning was terribly written!)
26. The Hidden Power of F*cking Up- Try Guys - 8/8/19
27. The Mama Natural Week-by-Week Guide to Pregnancy and Childbirth - Genevieve Howland - 8/29/19
28. And Baby Makes Three - John M. Gottman and Julie Gottman - 8/31/19
29. Brain Health From Birth - Rebecca Fett - 9/6/19
30. Little Fires Everywhere — CELESTE NG - 9/20/19
31. Just Ella - Margaret Peterson Haddix - 9/25/19

32. Precious Little Sleep - Alexis Dubief - in progress
33. Fairest- Gail Carson Levine - 10/2/19
34. Mr. Penumbra’s 24 hour bookstore- Robin Sloan- 10/15/19

Aw man. I totally slacked on my reading challenge. This is very inspiring to carry on though! I don't think I'll hit 50 by Dec 31. I think I can go 40 strong though! I am including books listened by Audible though. One cannot read whilst driving or housework.

I did cancel my Audible subscription ( $14.99 a month) and now use the library's app called Libby for audiobooks. Mustache win!

I'm happy to have discovered two new libraries that are a little far from home but where I can have many English books. 10€ per year is better than 20€ per book. A little behind to achieve the 50 books per year though especially on the non-fiction books, 6 out of 10 so far. We'll see how it goes.

1. The Laws of Human Nature, Robert Greene, (purchased with Christmas gift card).
2. The Price of Inequality, Joseph Stiglitz, (found on park bench walking home from bars one night).
3. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, JK Rowling, (same copy I read when I was nine).
4. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, JK Rowling, (same).
5. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, JK Rowling, (same).
6. Financial Freedom, Grant Sabatier, (library).
7. Digital Minimalism, Cal Newport, (library).
8. Deep Work, Cal Newport (library).
9. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, JK Rowling, (same copy).
10. Memoirs of a Geisha, Arthur Goldstein, (borrowed from friend I was staying with in Ireland, then found it in Dublin bookshop for €2).
11. How Successful People Think, John C. Maxwell, (borrowed from Uncle).
12. The Slight Edge, Jeff Olson, (borrowed from Uncle; actually good self-help).
13. The Power of Positive Thinking, Norman Vincent Peale, (library; kinda shit).
14. #AskGaryVee, Gary Vaynerchuk, (library).
15. Daring Greatly, Brene Brown, (library).
16. The Wizard of Menlo Park, Randall Stross, (library).
17. Crush It!, Gary Vaynerchuk, (library).
18. Range, David Epstein, (library; one of the best books I've read this year).
19. The Formula, Albert-Laszlo Barabasi, (library; another one of the best books I've read this year).
20. The Thank You Economy, Gary Vaynerchuk, (library).
21. The Obstacle is the Way, Ryan Holiday, (purchased a while ago; reread).

It seems I'm on a self-help kick. Reading another one by Gary Vaynerchuk right now, and "Madrigal's Magic Key to Spanish" so I can learn Spanish. I don't really question my reading habits, and I wouldn't have even noticed it had I not typed this out.

Anyway, add me on goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/7154232-phil-sykora

23. Crushing It!, Gary Vee (library).
24. What Color is Your Parachute? by Nelson Bolles (library).
25. The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo (library; READ THIS BOOK -- a narrative poem about a young latino girl growing up in Harlem, best fiction I've read this year)

35. Spinning Silver - Naomi Novik - 10/31/19 - All of her books are so good. This one is in that category too. Absolutely great.
36. Angel Mage - Garth Nix - in progress

YES. So good. I can't even put my finger on what makes her books SO GOOD- a lot of authors write similar stuff- there's just something so fantastic about her work. Simultaneously a super dark tone while feeling YA and having happy threads. She does "ominous" so well.

46. What Is Real? The Unfinished Quest for the Meaning of Quantum Physics, Adam Becker (mine)
47. Song of Achilles, Madeline Miller (mine)

48. Good Omens, Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett (mine). I love this book so much; always happy to re-read it.

49. Grovedaughter Witchery: Practical Spellcraft, Bree NicGarran (mine). Lucid and enjoyable.

50. Bhagavadgita, Edwin Arnold (mine). I'd been meaning to read this for ages, and am glad I did. The poetry was good (even in Victorian translation!) and there are always interesting ideas in old religious texts like this. I certainly don't agree with all of them, but it was worth it generally.

51. Witches, Midwives, and Nurses, Barbara Ehrenreich and Deirdre English (library). Mostly decent research, though I think anything connected to the witchcraft part here is much more suspect. The history of midwives and the modern medical profession is much better grounded, and they've done better at making that part of the discussion cohesive. Generally a valuable second wave feminist work.

I am at 14/15 for pre-2019 books.

Currently reading:

Flour Salt Water Yeast, Ken Forkish (borrowed)
Circe, Madeline Miller (mine)

I looked at my amazon digital account. It can tell me what I have been reading, but not when I read it. Only when I bought it, and that doesn't always match the reading period. In addition to digital books, I read a number of paper books, as our library doesn't offer Kindle books.

From next year, I will use a paper journal where I will log which books I read. So I hope there will be a next tread for 2020.
