50. (!!!) Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty

I did it! Not a bad one to finish on either. I've got a few more on the go so I'm going to switch my challenge to 50 non-audiobooks.

I'm enjoying this series a lot - this book was great. I was pretty sad about self-spoiling it, though - there was a long waitlist at the library for this one so when it came in, I went to check the next book in the series to see if I needed to put myself on a waitlist again for the next one. While on the web page, my eye couldn't help but fall on the first line of the description of the book, which gave away a big part of the ending of this one >:-[

Not looking good this year. I've had such little motivation to read espescially now with Puglet here. I just want to go straight to bed at night.

Boy do I remember how that was! I had years there where I only read a couple books the entire year. When my youngest was about 4 I got a kindle and it changed everything for me since I could read while holding hands at bedtime...plus I could check out ebooks for free from the library without worrying about them getting lost, damaged, etc. You have lots of years to get back to reading...enjoy your little one and get as much sleep as you can. I look back on those first few years now and it was just a blur!

33. Tom's Midnight Garden, Philippa Pearce (library)
34. Sweater Quest: My Year of Knitting Dangerously, Adrienne Martini (library)
35. Possum Living, Dolly Freed (library)

36. Native Tongue, Suzette Elgin (library). Good but hard book. Great job at the linguistics overall in terms of realisticness (if not 100% realistic), and I loved many of the characters and much of the messaging. However, there was so much misogyny in it -- critiqued and clearly indicated to be awful, but there it was, and it made it really hard to read the book some days.
37. Cold Comfort Farm, Stella Gibbons (library). Super funny pastiche of the old "back to the farm" type novels, with some really lyrical writing and just a lot to make you giggle.

I am at 11/15 for pre-2019 books.

Currently reading:

Good Omens, Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett (mine) (re-read #12 or so, reading this out loud with my partner <3)
The Fairies of Sadieville, Alex Bledsoe (library)

1. Surface Detail, by Iain M. Banks (predictable, but entertaining)

6. A Wrinkle in Time, L'Engle (much-needed wholesomeness)
7. People of the Lie, Peck
8. The Road Less Traveled, Peck (reminds me of Fromm's 'Art of Loving,' but with more religious overtones)
9. A History of the World in 100 Objects, MacGregor (my sense of the scope of history has been broadened delightfully)
10. The Left Hand of Darkness, Le Guin (I loved it)
11. Ecclesiastes (epicureanism?)
12. Legal Systems Very Different From Ours, Friedman (focuses on stable systems, p interesting)
13. Candide, Voltaire (more epicureanism, also hilarious)

1. Infernal Devices - Philip Reeve - 1/3/18
2. Sapiens - Yuval Noah Harari - 1/12/18 - UGH. Great subject, TERRIBLE execution. 200 pages of content in 430 pages of endless fucking lists and artificial dichotomies. Will never be reading another book from this author. He needs an editor to take the wind out of his (verbose, tedious, pedantic, excessive) sails
3. How to Manage Your Home Without Losing Your Mind - Dana White - 1/21/19
4. A Darkling Plain - Philip Reeve - 1/22/19
5. Woman on Fire - Amy Jo Goddard - 2/11/19 - fucking AWFUL. I don't think I'm the target audience. I found it incredibly condescending and reductionist and self-righteous. It was for book club. Hate that I even had to finish it!
6. Better Than Before - Gretchen Rubin - 2/19/19 - great. I highly recommend it.
7. The Female Persuasion - Meg Wolitzer - 3/1/19- actually a pretty solid read! Kept me engaged. Not my usual by any means (it was for book club), but not an annoyance read either.
8. The Thief - Megan Whalen Turner - 3/10/19 - these are fun kids reads. Well written and engaging.
9. The Queen of Attolia - Megan Whalen Turner - 3/15/19
10. The King of Attolia - Megan Whalen Turner - 3/19/20
11. Dies in Fire - S M Stirling - 3/21/19 - Book club book. This was really good! It's a local author, and I hate to say it, but I wasn't expecting much. Good read though. World war z writing vibe, but more compelling characters.
12. A Conspiracy of Kings - Megan Whalen Turner - 3/24/19
13. Thick as Thieves Megan Whalen Turner - 3/28/19
14. Thanks a Thousand: A Gratitude Journey - AJ Jacobs - 4/6/19 - not one of my favorite books by him. Hit it's stride a *little* more later on? But really, could have easily been an article and been better for it. Not much of his usual reliable great humor either. Eh.
15. The Year of Living Danishly - Helen Russell - 4/4/19 - pretty good, although the surprise infertility/miracle pregnancy store line crushed my sad little infertile heart. Definitely made me laugh out loud a time or two, and was an interesting look into denmark. A bit dry in places though.
16. Flight Behavior - Barabara Kingsolver - 4/15/19 - took me a little bit to get into this, but it was really good. Sad at times for sure. Empowering. Politically topical. Not sure why I owned it for so long without reading it! I love her books.
17. The Prophet - Kahlil Gibran - 4/24/19
18. Expecting Better - Emily Oster - 5/2/19
19. The Keystone Approach: Healing Arthritis and Psoriasis by Healing the Microbiome - Rebecca Fett - 5/8/19
20. Atomic Habits - James Clear - in progress (ugh this is a slog. Better than Before was way better) abandoned at about 60%
21. Your Money or Your Life - Joseph R. Dominguez, Monique Tilford, and Vicki Robin - 5/25/19
22. Cribsheets - Emily Oster - 6/6/19
23. The Power - Naomi Alderman - 6/7/19 - book club. Compelling and very readable, but depressing and pretty graphic (lots of sexual violence).
24. The Protector's War - SM Stirling - 7/2/19 - long book, but also I've been *exhausted* this month. Pregnancy might ruin my reading goal, even before the baby gets here!
25. Desert Queen: The Extraordinary Life of Gertrude Bell by Janet Wallach - 8/2/19 - good god book club needs to stop picking long books. Good for a biography, although that's not my usual preferred genre. (Although the intro at the beginning was terribly written!)
26. The Hidden Power of F*cking Up- Try Guys - 8/8/19

27. Precious Little Sleep - Alexis Dubief - in progress
28. The Mama Natural Week-by-Week Guide to Pregnancy and Childbirth - Genevieve Howland - 8/29/19
29. And Baby Makes Three - John M. Gottman and Julie Gottman - 8/31/19
30. Brain Health From Birth - Rebecca Fett - in progress

42. Kendare Blake - One Dark Throne
43. Kendare Blake - Two Dark Reigns

44. Kendare Blake - The Young Queens / The Oracle Queen

I ended up reading both prequel novellas, so I'm counting it as one book since they were pretty short. The next book in the series happens to be coming out this week so I'm waiting to see what place in the waitlist I am (for some reason it doesn't tell you until the book is released, but I put myself on in July). Starting something else in the meantime but if I get a copy right away I'll probably read it next to release it to the rest of the waitlist.

I'm in! I seem to always have a goal to increase my reading. I've seen an uptick in my travel for work so I've been able to tackle more audiobooks lately. I also learned to crochet and that gives me a lot of time to read, if I can find the time to do that. A friend turned me on to Orson Scott Card and I love those audiobooks, so this list will probably be dominated by his books.

1. Earth Afire by Orson Scott Card
2. Children of the Fleet by Orson Scott Card
3. The Memory of Earth by Orson Scott Card
4. Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs
5. Earth Awakens by Orson Scott Card
6. Hollow City by Ransom Riggs
7. Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo
8. The Richest Man In Babylon by George Clason
9. The Swarm by Orson Scott Card
10. Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
11. Alcatraz Versus the Scrivener's Bones by Brandon Sanderson
12. Library of Souls by Ransom Riggs     (Excellent...best of the trilogy)

13. I am Number Four by Pittacus Lore

I've really enjoyed the last (English) books I read. It's the first time I enjoyed so much a cooking book ('An everlasting meal').

I loved 'the last runaway' by Tracy Chevalier, even more so than 'the girl with an earring'. I'm truly astonished by the lives of those runaway slaves and I am understanding what 'the underground railway' means now. I didn't know about Quakers either, I went on a Google search rabbit hole about the underground railway, the Quakers, the abolitionists, etc.

Then 'five days' is so unsettling, at least for me as it explores the fact that you cannot change others and have to live your life. I can't express eloquently how it's well put but yeah I loved it maybe because it hits close to home.

I probably won't make it to 50 books, but will try finish at least 10.

1. La Mystere (french Children's book)

Currently reading
L'etranger (almost finished). Restarted Kafka on the shore because I never finished and also restarted Steppenwolfe.

Finished L'etranger. I am actually surprised how much of this book I forgot

1. La Mystere
2. L'etranger

I am not counting all the terrible translated chinese novels I've read online. Many, I have dropped halfway. Many, the translators quit half way. The worst is finding good translations with a mediocre story. I am sometimes amazed that some of these are actual published stories...

45. Jon Krakauer - Under the Banner of Heaven

Did not love this book. It was somewhat interesting, but felt kind of aimless, jumping around a lot and never really getting to a point. I also was uncomfortable with the way the author referred to some of the events and practices in the book. (I won't get into specifics here since it's triggery child abuse stuff.) It took me forever to get through since I never really wanted to pick it up and read it, but I got it done 2 hours before the library deadline. In the meantime the next book in the Kendare Blake series came through from the waitlist, and I'm excited for that one :-)

27. The Mama Natural Week-by-Week Guide to Pregnancy and Childbirth - Genevieve Howland - 8/29/19
28. And Baby Makes Three - John M. Gottman and Julie Gottman - 8/31/19
29. Brain Health From Birth - Rebecca Fett - 9/6/19

30. Precious Little Sleep - Alexis Dubief - in progress
31. Little Fires Everywhere — CELESTE NG - 9/20/19
32. Just Ella - Margaret Peterson Haddix - 9/25/19

42. Abundance of Less, Andy Couturier (borrowed). My god, this book was the EXACT balm my soul needed. I was a bit worried it might be very stereotypical (ancient Asian wisdom! look at these funny rural people! lifestyle trendiness! that sort of thing) and it was nothing of the sort. It went deep about people who go deep, and it was... my lord. I really recommend this to anyone who's on the MMM train because frugality is comparable with a slower, deeper way of living.

I am at 12/15 for pre-2019 books.

Currently reading:

Good Omens, Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett (mine) (re-read #12 or so, reading this out loud with my partner <3)
The Best American Essays 1991, ed. Joyce Carol Oates (mine)

1. The Laws of Human Nature, Robert Greene, (purchased with Christmas gift card).
2. The Price of Inequality, Joseph Stiglitz, (found on park bench walking home from bars one night).
3. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, JK Rowling, (same copy I read when I was nine).
4. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, JK Rowling, (same).
5. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, JK Rowling, (same).
6. Financial Freedom, Grant Sabatier, (library).
7. Digital Minimalism, Cal Newport, (library).
8. Deep Work, Cal Newport (library).
9. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, JK Rowling, (same copy).
10. Memoirs of a Geisha, Arthur Goldstein, (borrowed from friend I was staying with in Ireland, then found it in Dublin bookshop for €2).
11. How Successful People Think, John C. Maxwell, (borrowed from Uncle).
12. The Slight Edge, Jeff Olson, (borrowed from Uncle; actually good self-help).
13. The Power of Positive Thinking, Norman Vincent Peale, (library; kinda shit).
14. #AskGaryVee, Gary Vaynerchuk, (library).
15. Daring Greatly, Brene Brown, (library).
16. The Wizard of Menlo Park, Randall Stross, (library).
17. Crush It!, Gary Vaynerchuk, (library).
18. Range, David Epstein, (library; one of the best books I've read this year).
19. The Formula, Albert-Laszlo Barabasi, (library; another one of the best books I've read this year).
20. The Thank You Economy, Gary Vaynerchuk, (library).
21. The Obstacle is the Way, Ryan Holiday, (purchased a while ago; reread).

It seems I'm on a self-help kick. Reading another one by Gary Vaynerchuk right now, and "Madrigal's Magic Key to Spanish" so I can learn Spanish. I don't really question my reading habits, and I wouldn't have even noticed it had I not typed this out.

Anyway, add me on goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/7154232-phil-sykora
