I've officially read 70 books on Goodreads, but that's because of the short stories -- I'm glad to have hit 50 full-length books though! And that number will continue to go up, as I have two weeks off at the end of the year. :3

So far behind.  I have a long drive this weekend, so will be knocking out another audiobook or two.  I might make a push to finish the goal or I might decide that it is what it is.  I've read 200 books so far this year, I just didn't focus as much on Russia as I meant to.

I have decided that next year's reading focus will be Social Justice.

1. A Torch Against The Night- Sabaa Tahir- 1/8/18
--I cannot wait until the next one. Excellent books.
2. Hounded - Kevin Hearne - 1/17/18
3. Hexed - Kevin Hearne- 1/23/18
--fun short reads. Doritos for the brain. Not quite as good as Dresden, but still entertaining.
4. Hammered- Kevin Hearne- 2/9/18
--this one wasn't quite as good at the first two, but it was readable. Hope the next is better again.
5. Lab Girl- Hope Jahren- 2/24/18
--God this took me forever. It just was not compelling for me. Got better at the half way point, but just not my cup of tea. My book club all loved it, though, so maybe I'm alone on this one! I think it would be way more interesting to people who haven't worked in research before, because it'd be 'exploring an unknown life' style.
6. Tricked- Kevin Hearne- 3/2/18
7. World War Z- Max Brooks - 3/5/18
--As always (it was a reread for book club), an excellent book.
8. Trapped- Kevin Hearne - 3/12/18
9. Hunted- Kevin Hearne - 3/23/18
10. Shattered- Kevin Hearne - 4/2/18
11. Staked - Kevin Hearne - 4/11/18
12. Beseiged- Kevin Hearne- 4/17/18
13. Scourged- Kevin Hearne- 4/25/18
14. The Maze Runner- James Dashner- 5/6/18 -- This was another re-read for book club. Still a good read. I'll probably not bother to read the whole series again- the first one really is the best one.
15. A Court of Thorns and Roses- Sarah J Maas- 5/11/18 -- It was a compelling read, but not necessarily a good read. Ended up way more romance than action bend. Supposedly the second is better though, so I'll keep going.
16. A Court of Mist and Fury- Sarah J Maas - 5/19/18-- Definitely was better than the previous one. Not going to make it on a top YA series list for me, but good enough I'll finish out the series.
17. A Court of Wings and Ruin - Sarah J Maas - 5/21/18 -- The best of the 3 so far I think. Less romance, more bloody fields of war. I can get behind that. =P
18. Meet the Frugalwoods - Elizabeth Willard Thames - 5/30/18 -- Good read if you're interested in them as people. Autobio, not a how-to. Fills in some timeline gaps from their blog on their life stories.
19. Uglies - Scott Westerfeld - 6/3/18 -- Read for book club. It was pretty good! Definitely more on the children's lit than the YA side for most of it, but a compelling read. Easy to predict though. Still, finding myself looking forward to getting past the book group meeting so I can read the next in the series.
20. An Abundance of Katherines - John Green - 6/10/18 --Never read a John Green novel, got this for free from Buy Nothing. It was okay, not stellar. In no rush to read any of his other books. Seems like it would be great for teens feeling disconnected from their peers.
21. A Court of Frost and Starlight - Sarah J Maas - 6/19/18 - MEH. I should have stopped after the one before this.
22. Chronicle of a Death Foretold - Garbiel Garcia Marquez - 6/26/18 - Not as good as I remember it. Not that my Spanish is anywhere near the level anymore I could read it untranslated =(
23. Pretties- Scott Westerfeld- 7/4/18 - Still a fun series! Read for book club.
24. Alanna: The First Adventure - Tamora Pierce - 7/9/18
25. In The Hand of the Goddess - Tamora Pierce - 7/13/18
26. The life-changing magic of tidying up - Marie Kondo - abandoned 50% through on 7/19/18
27. The Woman Who Rides Like a Man - Tamora Pierce - 7/16/18
28. Lioness Rampant - Tamora Pierce - 7/21/18
29. Early Retirement Extreme - Jacob Fiskar - ~50% through. Very dense. Ended up abandoning it after a hiatus and lost my place.
30. Wild Magic - Tamora Pierce - 7/28/18
31. Wolf Speaker -Tamora Pierce - 8/1/18
32. Emperor Mage - Tamora Pierce - 8/5/18
33. A Brief History of Time - Stephen Hawking - got about 40% through, abandoned after book club meeting. 8/19/18
34. In The Realm of the Gods - Tamora Pierce - 8/10/18
35. Tempests and Slaughter- Tamora Pierce- 8/23/18 SO GOOD, as good as her original tortall stuff.
36. Frogkisser- Garth Nix- 9/7/18 - Turned out really good! Would recommend to girls 7-11 especially I think. I was unsure at first, but I ended up enjoying it a lot.
37. Decisive- Chip & Dan Heath - 9/12/18 - SUPREMELY useful book.
38. Crown Duel- Sherwood Smith - 9/24/18
39. Frankenstein - Mary Shelley - 10/12/18
40. The Stone Sky - NK Jemisin - ??10/24/18 - Great end to this trilogy.
41. The Body Keeps Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma - Bessel van der Kolk M.D. - around 40% on 11/9/18, have to return to the library since I'm moving. Incredible book though, I'll try to get a copy locally.
42. The First Test - Tamora Pierce - 11/12/18
43. Page - Tamora Pierce - 11/12/18
44. Squire - Tamora Pierce - 11/17/18
45. Shrill - Lindy West - 11/26/18
46. Lady Knight - Tamora Pierce - 11/23/18
47. Inconceivable: A woman's triumph over despair and statistics - Julia Indichova - 12/2/18 - ehhhh kinda pissed me off? But also a bit empowering? Hard to say, I'll have to digest it for a while.

48. Mortal Engines - Philip Reeve - 12/11/18- Fun read!
49. Hilariously Infertile - Karen Jeffries - In Progress
50. Predator's Gold - Philip Reeve - In Progress

Almost there =)

49. Hilariously Infertile - Karen Jeffries - 12/14/18
50. Predator's Gold - Philip Reeve - 12/20/18
51. Born a Crime - Trevor Noah - 12/23/18 (Audiobook)
52. Infernal Devices - Philip Reeve - In Progress

Final count for 2018: 51 read, or started and officially abandoned. 2 In progress. Wooo I met my goal.

49. Hilariously Infertile - Karen Jeffries - 12/14/18
50. Predator's Gold - Philip Reeve - 12/20/18
51. Born a Crime - Trevor Noah - 12/23/18 (Audiobook)

52. Infernal Devices - Philip Reeve - In Progress
53. Sapiens- Yuval Noah Harari - In Progress (Audiobook)

I am really proud of myself that I broke through this reading plateau--2017 was 42. Definitely up for the challenge in 2019, though instead of limiting myself to only technical books (which was not sustainable with my other goals, coursework, and work), I think I will target 50%.

My reading choices did help my mindset to finish 2018 strong. Hope that all of you out there found success as well! :)

Re: 50 Books in 2018!
« Reply #743 on: January 02, 2019, 02:44:28 PM »
My goal for the year was 52 books. I made it this weekend! Between a long work trip, vacations, and a move I have been traveling for probably 8 weeks so far this year, and that's when I get most of my reading done. I may get through 10 more books this year, but I would be shocked if I get through another 50.

I've been lurking in this thread as well as elsewhere on the forum for book recommendations and found all sorts of good things. So, to those of you who pointed out one of this list's finds, thanks! Hopefully my reading list can pay the favor forward
I ended up with 90 books, way more than I thought I was going to be able to. Bold titles below are highly recommended.

I finished the year at 25.  Aiming for 26 this year.  Getting off to a slow start.

1. Make Me by Lee Child (a bit too dark for me, to be honest)
2. Boar Island by Nevada Barr
3. Ms. Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs (awesome!  Will pass on to hubby and big kid next)
4. The Year of Living Danishly by Helen Russell *
5. $2 a Day: Living on Almost Nothing in America by Kathryn J. Edin and H. Luke Shaefer *
6. Tears of the Giraffe by Alexander McCall Smith
7. Morality for Beautiful Girls by Alexander McCall Smith
8. Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker (excellent book on sleep and its importance!) *
9. The Full Cupboard of Life by Alexander McCall Smith
10. Below Stairs by Margaret Powell
11. Miller's Valley by Anna Quindlen
12. Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear
13. The Soldier's Return by Melvyn Bragg
14. Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty First Century by Jessica Bruder  (I could not put this down) *
15. Just Mercy by Bryan Stephenson.  Oy.  This was depressing and encouraging at the same time.  It completely changed my mind from "pro-capital punishment" to "anti- capital punishment" *
16. Under the Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes.  I needed lighter fare! *
17. The Hiding Place by Trezza Azzopardi
18. In the Company of Cheerful Ladies by Alexander McCall Smith
19. Blind Man's Bluff: The Untold Story of American Submarine Espionage by  Sherry Sontag and Christopher Drew with Annette Lawrence Drew *
20.  The End of Overeating by David A. Kessler, MD (a reread) *
21.  The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
22.  Charlotte's Web by E.B. White
23.  Constellation by Adrien Bosc (Novel about a real life plane crash in the Azores in 1949) #
24.  Woman of the Inner Sea by Thomas Keneally
25.  Lights Out Liverpool by Maureen Lee

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
